About the Author Henri Cole was born in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1956. He has published eight previous collections of poetry and received many awards for his work, including the Jackson Poetry Prize, the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award, the Rome Prize, the Berlin Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. His most recent collection is Touch. He lives in Boston, where he is a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.

Peterson NOTHING TO DELCARE by Henri Cole is my latest more-or-less-chosen-at-random sampling of contemporary poetry. I am somewhat ambivalent about the volume, as is also true concerning my entire project of seeking to expand my literary horizons by exposing myself to poetry of "quality".There are twenty-eight poems in NOTHING TO DECLARE. For the most part, the language is poised and controlled. I will concede, even, that it is poetic -- unlike the work of some other contemporary "poets" I have sampled. Many of the poems are in the form of five-line stanzas, each line being relatively short. There is no obvious rhyming. Here is one of the poems, entitled "Enlightenment Means Living":Writing this absorbed,I realize that the wordsare spilling all overmy legs, and I ask,"Hey, what's this?"When I goto the window,the words come tooand are just allover the place.It's as if my whole bodyceased to exist,and I experiencethe end of Henriin an infinitude of words.It is mildly intriguing and beckons me to re-read it. But whatever might it mean? Darned if I have a clue. And that is true for virtually all of the poems in NOTHING TO DECLARE.There are a few pieces (I find it difficult to call them "poems") that I found pretentious or gimmicky. One, entitled "Sphere", was first published in "The New Yorker". It uses the word "black" in almost every one of its twenty-two lines: black tea, Black Label, black locusts, black bear, Black Death, blacked out, black eyes, black book, black sheep, etc. It, by the way, is dedicated to Harold Bloom; other poems are dedicated to Jamaica Kincaid, Claire Malroux, and Helen Vendler. That practice, to me, is vaguely smarmy.My habit when reading books of poetry is to mark those poems that I think (or know) will be rewarding if and when re-read some time in the future. (I hope to have time for a poetry retrospective before I kick the bucket.) Of the twenty-eight poems in NOTHING TO DECLARE, I so marked seven -- which is a higher percentage than is the norm. Accordingly, NOTHING TO DECLARE, despite how elusive its contents are, seems to be better-than-average. But I doubt I will sample any more poetry by Henri Cole, even though I am not yet ready to abandon my project of randomly sampling contemporary poetry.

Varn Henri Cole’s Nothing to Declare is an elusive work of verse: elusive in the sense of its influences are felt lightly, elusive in the complexity of the emotions it explores, and elusive in the lightness in the language. Indeed, these elusive qualities make the title of book somewhat ironic: “Nothing to Declare” is written in a declarative mode more than a descriptive one. Even some of the techniques of Cole’s observation are based on irony of beginning with declarations. Cole will often begin a poem with a cliché or almost banal bit of language rendered declaratively, such as “Lincoln at the State House”: ‘The war / had ended, but people only realized / what he meant to them / after he was dead” which rings like a sub-par documentary line, but Cole doesn’t let that be the end. He complicates the pedestrian quite quickly but without a heavy hand. His average line is trim and short, reminiscent in technique (but not style or tone) to a poet like Robert Creeley.Cole has an eye for the surreal in the domestic and letting that surreal resonate as a representative of emotional ambivalence. He also allows nature into the poems quite often in a way that reminds this reader of Elisabeth Bishop with lines such as “probably only / an examiner / could distinguish / a raccoon’s bones” or describing a dog, “He prefers to give himself / up when hunted, rather / than soil himself. This is / civilization, I think, roughly / stroking his small ears.”This is not always an effective poetics: this tendency to start with the banal and casual and move surreal can lead to extremely heavy-handed metaphors in otherwise very clear verse such as, ‘I can stay in one place, / detoxifying experience like a kidney.” These missteps, which are sometimes seemingly unintentionally funny, appear to come from Henri’s love of French surreal poetry which seem to no-so-elusively show up in his verse. Also his tendency towards “anthropomorphism and anthropocentrism” does seem to almost narcissistically reduce the natural world to elements of personal drama, which is hardly unique to Cole.Cole creates a dense work that does not feel dense, a highly allusive work that does not call attention to itself, and a highly varied work that still feels of a singular voice. Strongly recommended.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. "Like a Piece of Meat with Eyes" By Amy Lowell The newest offering by Mr. Henri Cole is" Nothing to Declare" . Henri is one of our most talented and observant of American poets. His work is somewhere between Robert Merrill and Elizabeth Bishop. He gathers many lessons from the poets of the 50's and 60's. Born in 1956 to a military family. Attending the College of William and Mary, he starts publishing in the mid 80's. Steeped in the glorious generation of what I call the "WORD", Berryman, Lowell, Bishop, Merrill, (to name just a few), He has refined his words to the most simple. It is the impact of the words that is at times surprising and deceptive in their simplicity.You can read all the poems in an hour, but you will not forget them. Henri's poems haunt. If I were to make a summation of this particular book, I would use the line from " Free Dirt" " Like a piece of meat with eyes".....a description of the Poet ? A description of human beings ? A description of Henri Cole? One cannot get away from the idea that Henri is a mass of elements, observations and memories all tied to the meaning of love and the body balanced on a small sheet of white paper.Unlike much of the say nothing poems today, these stick with you. His wording and image are stunning in their simplistic package of a book.

I normally don't write reviews but this drivel was such a waste of my time that I felt compelled By John Derenthal I was very much looking forward to an informative book on the Kahn but this was not a book. It was a high school term paper and shouldn't have gotten more than a C in that class. I normally don't write reviews but this drivel was such a waste of my time that I felt compelled. The organization of the book is chaotic. At first it appears to be setting the background for the information to come but it ends up the whole book is introductory sentences with nothing behind it. Its so bad its hard to describe but if you start the book realize it gets worse as it goes on. I'll give one example. Trust me in that there is nothing in front or in back of these paragraphs to substantiate anything."For example, people are unaware that it was the Mongols that were responsible for carpets being used, as they pushed them along the different trade networks. Curiously they were also responsible for China's introduction to products such as carrots and lemons, and , in a reversal of that trade link, they opened up the idea of tea, noodles, and even playing cards to many parts of the western world.The point about carpets is actually more important than perhaps you realize. We often look to Persia for carpets discerning the point of origin. Very few people would be cognizant of the role the Mongols played in something we now take for granted."There is no discussion of why the "point" about carpets is more important than I realize. There is no logic in listing things that were moved effectively around the world by the Mongols only to jump back to carpets and repeat that many people don't know this. Please do not read this book. Go read Wikipedia and you will be more satisfied. Of yes, the author is done with Genghis about 1/2 way through the book, continues in a haphazard way with the continuation of the empire after his death and manages to spend all of about 5 pages on Kublai Kahn saying nothing that would distinguish him in history as one of the great leaders of the world. At 66% of the way through the book Chapter 24 is titled "A Final Conclusion Regarding the Mongol Empire". I stopped reading shortly after this but the author managed 7 more chapters after his Final Conclusion. Spoiler alert, best I can tell the final conclusion in the words of the author is "The fact that they were able to achieve so much in a short period of time should be credited to Genghis Kahn because , without him, history would have been very different."I do not like green eggs and ham and I do not like this book.

By Ellen Lucas The book gave me some interesting tips and ideas, but some of the things this person collects is not something I would be interested in. That's just a personal preference I guess. My sister once found a nice lookin wall clock still in the box in a dumpster behind a popular chain store and was able to sell it for it's total value. That's the kind of things I would love to find! Probably doesn't happen that often though.

Jessie Donovan has once again demonstrated her incredible talent, amazing skill and astounding imagination in her latest release, Revealing the Dragons. Jessie has done a marvelous job of not only bridging this story with her two earlier series, Sacrificed to the Dragon and Seducing the Dragon but also using it as an exciting introduction to her upcoming series, Healing the Dragon. Every time I read one of The Stonefire Dragons stories, it feels like coming home to visit all my family and friends. Jessie's stories always leaves me with tears in my eyes, a smile on my face and warmth in my heart. The story is exciting, well developed, thrilling, compelling, riveting, imaginative, original, heartwarming, romantic and sensual. The dialog is smart, sassy, intelligent, very well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are fascinating, captivating, endearing, enticing, intriguing and sexy as sin. Jessie expertly combines these elements to give her readers a magical experience and a very entertaining read. The day has arrived for the release of Melanie Hall-MacLeod's controversial new book, Revealing the Dragons and trouble is on the horizon. Melanie is hoping that her book will gain support for the dragons. If successful, it will enable her to see her family and ensure that her two dragon-shifter children will be safe and protected from enemies that seek to destroy the dragons. It's just a book - surely no would would try to kill her over something as simple as a book. Right? Wrong! Unfortunately, the release doesn't go smoothly. An attempt is made on Mel's life, an attack is launched on the Department of Dragon Affairs and an age old enemy is reborn. And of course all of our beloved characters from the two previous series are there to offer their help and support including her dragon mate and husband, Tristan MacLeod. Of all the characters to date, Tristan is my favorite dragon-shifter. At his best, Tristan can be arrogant, prideful, egotistical and down right rude and at his worse, a ferocious dragon but to his mate, Mel, a kind loving husband and father and he loves his mate and his children more than life itself and will do anything to protect them. The interaction between this couple is entertaining and magical and at times, down right hilarious! I love it! I don't think I'll ever tire of reading about Tristan and Mel. I hope we see a lot more of them in the future. And their twins, Jack and Annabel, deserve their own individual series. But wouldn't ya'll just love to see Annabel and baby Murray get together in the future? It's just a suggestion! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read! I can hardly wait for the release of Healing the Dragon!

Because of this, we can see that strong sense of solidarity and community is still existing somewhere.I really enjoyed Arabella in this novella. She is a strong and endearing dragon woman, from who I like to read more in the future.The author did a really good job in writing this installment. Each story line has different main protagonists with a different thematic focus, but there is always a main plot running through every story like a common thread. This connects each story line into a whole story.I cannot wait to read the story about Arabella and Finn.

It matches the moods of the characters and of the story as a whole, making it impossible to put the story down. Her descriptions bring this creative world to life in a larger than life manner. Combine that with a fast paced, suspenseful storyline and you have a tale that won’t be forgotten. Donovan takes the concept of racism, which is still all too prevalent in society today, and places it in this imaginative paranormal world in a way that will capture you mind, heart & soul. She also places the clan more firmly in the context of UK as a whole so readers get a better feel of the outside dynamics.The characters in this story are great. I love how you really get an in depth look at their lives and what they face on a daily basis. Donovan really humanizes the shifters in this novella, making them even more approachable and understandable to us humans. They were great up until this point in the series, now they’re unforgettable. Tristan’s dragon is absolutely priceless now that we’re getting to know him on so many levels. He had me in stitches more than once. Also, the love between the characters shines through (even in the hot & racy bedroom scenes). That said, readers really do need to read this series in order so that they get to know the characters. Characters do continue to grow and become more complexly developed throughout the story but to fully understand the who’s who & what’s what you do need to read the entire series.This novella was excitingly action packed and filled with all the explosive heat and chemistry that we’ve come to know and love from these dragonmen. It was a fantastic addition to the series and a must read for all those who enjoy dragons, or shifters in general.Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Gray Given that I loved the classic Grimm tales and stories in my youth, I was more than happy to search for similar tales that I could share with my kids as well. I bought this illustrated Cinderella book in the hopes that it would provide great entertainment in my family and I’m glad to say that it did. The creator designed the material in the traditional style. It reads just like the old world tale but it’s very easy to understand. The most wonderful part of this particular book is the illustrations. They are made in sketch form with keen artistry, bringing the story alive, yet still mirroring that old world feel that references the story so well. As we turned the pages my kids were thrilled with the tale and pictures that came along with it.If you’re looking for the classic Cinderella story told well and illustrated in a fashion that will make the book a part of your long term library, you’re going to love this one. Without a doubt my family and I have.

Beautiful Classic Illustrations and a timeless fairytale By Buckeyegirl Nearly every little girl has at one point dreamed of being Cinderella, in part due to the popularity of her story and Hollywood renditions.This was my first time reading the original story by the Grimm Brothers and I am glad that I chose this version. This story explains some different things, like the relationship between Cinderella and the fairy godmother, that most film versions skim over. It also spelled out a few different moral lessons in the story which are often left out of the modern adaptations. The beautiful accompanying illustrations appear to date from the mid-nineteenth century which seems to suit this story so well. If you have never read the original story, I recommend it as it puts a whole new perspective on Cinderella's plight under the control of her stepmother.

I have just bought the book for my young daughter. She loves the story more than my thought. She was so curious about the Cinderella and almost read the whole book within 2 days. The story was unique and written superbly. Some illustrated images makes the story more natural and attractive. We have some other collection of Cinderella series but this one is exceptional. No grammatical errors, some gorgeous illustration makes the book perfect. Author find out the Cinderella character more classical than before. Very well written.

Great story By Gabrielle Lhea may have been forced to leave her master and the dark part of the forest but she never forgets her time there and longs to reunite with her master. She must make a hard decision that will affect the rest of her life. Will she help those that want to destroy her master?I enjoyed this continuation of Lhea’s story. As her story progresses Lhea comes into her own and begins to grow. She fights with her own emotions and must come to terms with what she has become and what she wants to be. I also enjoyed the introduction of so many different characters in this story. They care for Lhea and only want to help her. I was pulled in to this story and taken along with Lhea on her adventure. If you enjoyed the beginning of Lhea’s story in the previous book you will not be disappointed with this book.I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Escape By Solmarie I was gifted a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.After all the trials that she endured for her Master Lhea suddenly finds herself rescued. The only problem is that she didn't really want to leave her Master. Sad to be away from her Master and upset to realize that her friend Fillia is still in her Master's possession she vows to do whatever it takes to free her. Including going back to her Master of her own free will.The Master is furious when his pet is taken away from him. He has sworn to make those who took her pay. He will get her back no matter the cost. She is his...now and always.I really enjoyed this second book. It was interesting in book one to see the changes that both characters experienced but this one showed so much more to the Master's character.

The first one left me expecting something else to happen and this second part of the story kept me very interested. There was darkness, action and a lot of kinky sex. Really a paranormal Dom and Sub story with very strange characters. Wow! What imagination have the authors. Well development for this strange and twisted kind of story. I was so consumed by curiosity that I read it in 2 hours. Liked a lot.I received the ARC for an honest review

Adorable Demonstration of Feelings By Betty Mermelstein It's important at any age to understand the different emotions that we feel, but that's particularly true for young children who have a hard time figuring out the way they feel at different times. Today I Feel Emotions lets children of any age relate to their feelings through the adorable and colorful character who clearly carries the wide variety of emotions on its face. This book is also a good example of the use of descriptive words and could be used to help with children's writing projects.

Great for Teaching about Feelings By Author Alinka Rutkowska "Today I Feel Emotion" by Hayley Rose is a children's book, which teaches our little ones about the different emotions we can feel. The pictures illustrate different emotions to help children identify them.I'm looking forward to going through each emotion with my 3-year-old.

And with so many different study books available on the market, it can be confusing to know which one to get. This book is really the best of its kind. It covers everything you will need to know to be prepared for this exam.Nobody wants to drag around all their books and notes. That’s why this guide is so great. Everything is conveniently located in this one spot. You can flip through to whichever topics you want to focus on, or you can start at the beginning and go through it page by page. It’s nicely laid out and very logical in the sequence of information. It’s detailed without being too wordy. It’s also well organized. One of the best features is all the additional information it gives you on getting yourself prepared, stopping procrastination and making the most of your time. The strategies and suggestions are very helpful and will help you overcome your testing fears. The practice questions are also a great gage to judge how prepared you are. That’s something you won’t find in the other guides.So if you’re looking for a one-stop guide that covers it all for this exam, this is the only book you need. It’s well worth it!

Good Investment By Janine Herrin I agree with one of the recent reviewers (Amy from 2011), on how helpful this book is, especially due to the expertise on test taking strategies and how to approach standardized testing. The book was very enlightening and helpful to me in so many areas - In both the actual approach to the exam, as well as the informational and educational aspect of it. This book covers all the information that is needed - all the basic subjects and everything is gone into with depth and detail, so whether you use the extra information as to how to approach testing, or not, is up to you, but it seems to be skimming the cream off the top if you don't. As the first reviewer said, there is structure to every standardized test, and I believe it is true for anyone in an any type of formal schooling, that it isn't just about WHAT you know, you must also groom yourself to be skilled at testing, controlling anxiety, and learning different methods of answering questions, studying, making notes, and retaining information. Maybe people are different, but I imagine anyone achieves the highest score possible when they are relaxed and calm, and part of that ease comes from being prepared. So for what it's worth, I recommend using the book, or if possible, getting the set of 3 above (The Pre-Dental Guide, The DAT Study Guide, and the flashcards) - For passing my exam the first time and moving forward in life, it's a good investment in my book!

Some of them have the basic information of your subject and others have test taking tips and study ideas. There are even some that will cover certain sections of this subject. But what you really need is a study guide that has it all. And you don’t want to study EVERYTHING you learned in all of your classes because that can get a little overwhelming. But you do need to cover everything that will be on the test. And that’s where this study guide comes in. This guide has all of the details in it that will be on the test. If you know the guide, you’ll feel good about what you have learned before taking the test. Plus, this study guide has all of the test taking tips and study secrets you need as well. In addition to all that, the guide even has some practice tests you can take to make sure you’re really ready for the real thing. It’s nice to have absolutely everything you need in one well-organized guide. Even better yet, the guide doesn’t cost that much!

Fairy-Tales Grown Up

It is to be supposed that children do not read Prefaces; these are Bluebeard's rooms, which they are not curious to unlock. A few words may therefore be said about the Romances contained in this book. In the editor's opinion, romances are only fairy tales grown up. The whole mass of the plot and incident of romance was invented by nobody knows who, nobody knows when, nobody knows where. Almost every people has the Cinderella story, with all sorts of variations: a boy hero in place of a girl heroine, a beast in place of a fairy godmother, and so on. The Zuñis, an agricultural tribe of New Mexico, have a version in which the moral turns out to be against poor Cinderella, who comes to an ill end.

There the stories are: they are as common among the remotest savages as among the peasants of Hungary, France, or Assynt. They bear all the birth-marks of an early society, with the usual customs and superstitions of man in such a stage of existence…. But when reading and writing and a class of professional minstrels and tellers of tales arose, these men invented no new plots, but borrowed the plots and incidents of the world-old popular stories. They adapted these to their own condition of society, just as the plantation negroes adapted Orpheus and Eurydice. They elevated the nameless heroes and heroines into Kings, Queens, and Knights, Odysseus, Arthur, Charlemagne, Diarmid, and the rest. They took an ancient popular tale, known all over the earth, and attributed the adventures of the characters to historical persons, like Charlemagne and his family, or to Saints, for the legends of early Celtic Saints are full of fairy-tale materials. Characters half historic, half fabulous, like Arthur, were endowed with fairy gifts, and inherited the feats of nameless imaginary heroes.

The book is actually a 19th century collection of King Arthur stories aim at young boys.Anyone looking for a bodice ripper should probably look else where.

From the Author With Kain Edward playing such a very important role in the novel Stanley Swanson, it only made sense that this character should have his own book.  This takes Kain back when he was younger and becoming the journalist that he does.  Along the way, it explains his accident while crossing paths of another character from the novel in the process.  It ends with a very insightful twist that leads him to Stanley Swanson.

About the Author S.K. Ballinger lives in central Kansas. Has four children that is the world to him. Has owned two patents known as the 'Sherloc' and 'Can Handle'. Also while being venturous has owned his own business at one point. He simply tries over and over and is not afraid to keep going. His latest is writing. The autobiography of 'Blissful Misery' is the first series of three. His attempt is to do something very uncommon in writing about his life. While this first book now known as 'BM' has stirred up much controversy, he continues to write.
