Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What a Difference a Century Makes... By NyiNya Written at the end of World War I, and by a Cornell profession of physiology...not a chef, not a housewife, not a nutritionist, this is not so much a book about what to eat when food is scarce and rationing dictates the menu as it is a look at how we grab the wrong end of the stick much of the time. The book opens with a stern warning: Vegetables, particularly leafy greens, olive oil, and whole grains are a dangerous combination. You don't want to overdo that stuff. Why, according to Professor Lusk, he has studied Italian families who live on the stuff...and who are doomed. No way they're going to survive on this kind of fodder. Some of the information is actually funny, and the author's stern warnings about food that our own experts rave about -- and recommendations of foods that we're now supposed to avoid -- will have you grinning and scratching your head. So, what's for dinner? "For splendid health, both of body and mind, a peasants' comparative immunity to indigestion, kidney and liver disease, as well as an absolute immunity to gout" try the following for your daily intake: Graham bread 1 pound; Potatoes 2 pounds; Apples 2 pounds; Milk 1 pint, This bread-potato-fruit diet provides the professor's essentials: milk, gluten and yeast. Add enough of these to your diet, he says, and you can skip other proteins, like meat. And the vitamins and minerals too, I guess. There are recipes for Graham bread, by the way, if you want to savor this particular treat.Makes you wonder what people are going to say about our nutritional geniuses one hundred years from now!Enjoy!

The charming pictures, filling the entire page are even better. I think middle school children will be delighted. I especially like that it highlights the role of School Resource Officers.

World War II was one of the most complex events in history, the consequences of which are still being felt today. Believing that one of the best ways to learn history is through biography, Famous Men of the Second World War tells the story of the war through the lives of 31 men, investigating prominent individuals such as George Patton and Winston Churchill, as well as lesser-known individuals, scubas Carl Mannerheim and Chiang Kai-shek. The contribution of women to the war effort is also emphasized. Famous Men of the Second World War covers D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and other high-profile events, as well as topics often overlooked in World War II texts, giving insight into the important roles of China, Russia’s Winter War with Finland, the rescue of thousands of Hungarian Jews from the Holocaust and the epic clash between Germany and the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front. Review questions are included for each chapter to supplement home or classroom study.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Easy informative read! By StacFo This book is amazing. The set up is easy to follow and consistent throughout the chapters. As a history major the book contains all the right information. As a parent it states the facts and keeps you interested with short, easy to follow stories about individuals. These stories are what helps history come alive for kids. I enjoyed this book and will recommend it to others.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Makes history come alive for the whole family By Wilfred Pennington "Famous Men of the Second World War" tells the compelling stories of 31 men who played pivotal roles in the war. For the subjects we were already familiar with, we learned more and gained insight into their personal stories. And best of all, we became familiar with many new historical figures. The book managed quite adeptly to take a vast topic like World War II and make it a more intimate experience, told from the perspective of each of these subjects. Our daughter is 10 years old and is an avid reader and history buff, especially since her father is a high school history teacher. She was fully engaged by the book and especially enjoyed the inclusion of women's contributions to the war effort. We read the book together over a period of time and it's an easy book to cover a segment at a time. The review questions at the end of each chapter make the book an interactive experience for the whole family. This book would make great supplemental material for classroom instruction and I plan to offer it to my daughter's sixth-grade teacher next year for use during their study of World War II. I only wish my daughter could have looked at this book with her grandfather, who was a World War II veteran and passed away last year at the age of 93 -- he was so proud of his military service and he would have loved reminiscing and sharing this book with his granddaughter!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Informative and entertaining By Kristieg I would highly recommend this book! My daughter is 13 and loves history, we were able to read it together, and the questions at the end of each chapter made sure we didn't miss anything! This would be an asset to any family, or classroom. Each chapter is very detailed, personal, and well written. My grandfather was in WW2 and we were able to compare his stories and accounts with the times, places, and people in this book. WW2 came alive.

The author has given a story based on most of today's society's younger girls. The writing is, as always, great and the characters, adorable. I am expecting more from the author and especially about the story of Megan.

Ancient gods. Mother Earth. And the greatest power of all. Long ago, man was ruled by superstition, worshipping the Gods of Land, Sea, and Air. It was comfort and security. But modern man has evolved, relegating the gods to myth and legend. They’re not real. Or are they? Being a god isn’t easy. Loki should know. Play one harmless prank on the All Father and you’re branded for eternity. Add in arrogant pantheons and a secret only but a few know, then its little wonder he’s lived the majority of his long life among the humans. And romantic entanglements? Uh, no. There’s a saying about gift horses. A shame that didn’t pertain to Creed Donahue’s latest assignment. At least he wasn’t freezing his balls like the last one. Then again, meeting Loki, the Loki, has him thinking more about his sanity than any shit assignment. The Sleepers must never be free. Fate has a way of balancing the scales. Whether it’s justice, vengeance, or love, no one is exempt. Not even the gods. Because change is coming. For Creed and Loki, their epic tale of battle, love and loss, is just the beginning.

Loki finds his mate on an archeology dig in the Jungle, Loki has been tasked with making sure the dig doesn't unearth an evil elder god who was buried there as punishment for mass killing of humans. Loki's mate is the head of security Creed. Of course there is lots of squabbling among the gods, but fear not Mother Nature will not put up with all the infighting ! Lots of Fun!

I couldn't put this book down once I started it, the story line just grabs you and won't let go! I love Loki, and the way he is reinvented here is just magic!Poor Loki, can't even get by with a little prank on the All Father (lips twitching in a smile), the way this book starts is brilliant, you get a feel for the man you will soon call your latest book boyfriend, and he is wonderful!Loki has never loved a man and doesn't do commitment, like ever, that is until he meets Creed! The things these two men endure to be together is amazing, and these two are sweet and oh so hot together!I don't do spoilers, but I will tell you that if you want a book that is well written and will keep you on your toes, this one is for you! The storyline never lags, and there is one brilliant plot twist after another so you don't get bored!Grab this one friends, you will make new friends in this book, and fall in love with two very special men you will want to keep forever! Thanks Kimberly, for giving us a book we can crawl into and never, ever want to leave! I received this product in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

This romance had to people that never made me think "you idiots". It was a nice change. There is a stalker but she is not captured 3-5 times.I really enjoyed the story. I was happy with the ending but still wished for an epilogue that took us 5 years out to children. I really loved this couple. I will read more from is author. This was my first book by her. Defiantly not my last!

Instant attraction/love, a damsel in distress, a protective, rich hero, good writing... that's all I really need! I've actually read other books by this author and really enjoyed them as well (Wilde Brother series).Amazon has the book priced at $2.99 which seems like a lot for less than 100 pages but for readers that don't mind shorter stories and have Kindle Unlimited, this was an enjoyable read!Note: At the time this review was posted, this book was available to borrow through Amazon's Kindle Unlimited program.

A Look Into the Darkside, by Tim Taylor

About the Author Tim Taylor has been an author of previous publications regarding health and fitness, although those were also non-fiction books they are listed as a whole different world. Tim’s passion since the fall of the economy and his clients not being able to afford his services any longer brought him to a light one day of fighting human trafficking. After reading some posts on social media and being able to team up with Shawna Hutcheson, he quickly realized that this was his calling. In the beginning of this new adventure he would become part of a team that he did not agree with. Tim could not put his arms around how a non-profit organization that preached about finding children could ever charge a family to do so. Their motto was the first time free and the second time if they run again you pay. The same went for age groups under a certain age and over a certain age. Tim decided to leave that organization and go to work for a private investigation company who for the most part had the same idea – nothing for free. Not being able to deal with that him and Shawna would team up to open Metro Atlanta Human Trafficking Task Force, a Georgia non-profit. There motto and business practice was different from the others. No matter what the age they would search and recover, no matter if this was the first time or the 5th time they would search not even taking a cup of coffee from the parents or guardians. Unlike other organizations once a reported missing or trafficked was found safe their posters would be taken down and there would be no found safe posters remaining up after 24 hours. This to protect the privacy and well-being of the victims. Searches that would wind up in finding the missing deceased would also only stay up for 24 hours and yes even the criminals, the pimps, johns, abductors, rapists would be taken down because they last thing he wanted was to have some attorney in an expensive suit to find a loophole and for these criminals to be out again on the streets. Even though it is true that the more found safe, found deceased, in custody posters you share the greater the publicity would be, this is not how he designed this to be. It was all about those two words Found Safe.

It made me feel like I live in a bubble not realizing this stuff goes on all around us. Tonight I am taking my daughters tablet and will not return it until we go through all her friends lists together. If thee is one thing I learned from this book is we need to be proactive instead of reactive

It makes a very clear case for the long held conclusion that life in those times was nasty, brutish and short. Disregarding some of the factual errors, especially dates, it does a fairly good job of being a quick overview

However, it ends with the rise of Prussia in the late 1800's. I would have enjoyed continuing the narrative to more modern times. Maybe a part II is in the works? Include much narrative on the negative effects of religion upon Germany.

September Weekes is accustomed to facing teasing and bullying because of her white hair, tubby figure and silly name, but the discovery of a clear, smooth stone at her home casts her into a struggle between good and evil that will present her with sterner challenges. The stone takes her to Gwlad, the Land, where the people hail her as the Cludydd o Maengolauseren, the bearer of the starstone, with the power to defend them against the evil known as the Malevolence. September meets the leader of the people, the Mordeyrn Aurddolen, and the bearers of the seven metals linked to the seven ‘planets’. Each metal gives the bearer specialised powers to resist the manifestations of the Malevolence; manifestations formed from the four elements of earth, air, fire and water, such as the comets known as Draig tân, fire dragons. She returns to her home, but is drawn back to the Land a fortnight later to find that two years have passed and the villagers have experienced more destructive attacks by manifestations. September must now help defend Gwlad against the Malevolence. Seventh Child is the first volume in a thrilling new fantasy series, Evil Above the Stars, by Peter R. Ellis, that will appeal to anyone who likes fantasy, especially fans of JRR Tolkien and Stephen Donaldson.  If old theories are correct until a new idea comes along, does the universe change with our perception of it? Were the ideas embodied in alchemy ever right? What was the basis of Celtic mythology? Although ostensibly a fantasy for young adults, it is can just as easily be seen as science fiction, and will appeal to readers of all ages.

Seventh Child (Evil Above the Stars Book 1), by Peter R. Ellis

About the Author Peter would like to say he's been a writer all his life but it is only since retiring as a teacher in 2010 that he has been able to devote enough time to writing to call it a career. Brought up in Cardiff, he studied Chemical Physics at the University of Kent at Canterbury, then taught chemistry (and a bit of physics) in Norwich, the Isle of Wight and Thames Valley. His first experience of publishing was in writing educational materials which he has continued to do since retiring. Of his fictional writing, Seventh Child is his first published speculative fiction novel. Peter has been a fan of science fiction and fantasy since he was young, has an (almost) complete collection of classic SF by Asimov, Ballard, Clarke, Heinlein and Niven, among others, while also enjoying fantasy by Tolkien, Donaldson and Ursula Le Guin. Of more recent authors Iain M Banks, Alastair Reynolds and China Mieville have his greatest respect. His Welsh upbringing also engendered a love of the language (even though he can't speak it) and of Welsh mythology like the Mabinogion. All these strands come together in the Evil Above the Stars series. He lives in Herefordshire with his wife, Alison, who is a great supporter.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An intriguing combination of fantasy, Celtic mythology, cosmology and alchemy By "Seregil of Rhiminee" Peter R. Ellis' Seventh Child is the first novel in the Evil Above the Stars fantasy series. It's a compelling epic fantasy novel with charming Celtic flavour. It's a good and promising start to a new series.Seventh Child is mostly an epic young adult fantasy novel, but it will appeal to readers of all ages. I think it's nice that the author has written a novel that can be read and enjoyed by readers of all ages. It's suitable for many readers and can be enjoyed even by those who don't normally read fantasy novels. This novel was a pleasant reading experience for me. I found it fascinating, because it differed from most new fantasy novels by having elements of Celtic mythology, cosmology and alchemy in it. There are a few new novels in which authors have added this kind of elements to their stories, but this novel manages to be different from them, because the author clearly seems to be fascinated by Celtic mythology, Celtic words, cosmology and alchemy and writes about them in a loving way.In my opinion Seventh Child is a surprisingly intriguing and daring combination of the above mentioned elements. The author blends the different elements seamlessly. It's actually amazing how well he blends them and how fascinatingly he writes about alchemy. Here's a bit of information about the story:September Weeks is being bullied and teased by others, because she looks different. She has found a pebble that takes her to Gwlad, the Land. When she arrives in Gwlad, she is hailed as Cludydd o Maengolauseren, the bearer of the starstone. September is believed to have the power to defend the people of the Land against the evil known as the Malevolence. She meets the leader of the people, Mordeyrn, and the bearers of the seven metals (each of the metals draws its power from one of the planets). She is told that she is the seventh child. She doesn't believe it at first, but then finds out that she really is the seventh child, because her twin sister had died at birth. When September visits the Land again, she hears that two years have passed and terrible things have happened while she was away. Soon she finds out that she has to travel to Arsyllfa...That's all I'll write about the story, because it wouldn't be fair to reveal more about the happenings. I'll only mention that this is the beginning of an exciting and wondrous story.September Weekes is a well-created protagonist. She isn't like everybody else, because she's a bit plump and has white hair. She is accustomed to being bullied and teased. When she arrives in Gwlad and has to travel to a faraway place, she realizes that she has to learn many new things. She also realizes that she has become the target of the Malevolence's attacks and has to defend herself against evil. The secondary characters are also interesting characters. It was especially fun to read about Eluned who could shapeshift into different types of animals, but I also enjoyed reading about the Mordeyrn, Cynddylig, Tudfwlch and Heulwen, because the author wrote well about them and their doings.I'll also mention that I enjoyed reading about Malice, because the author wrote fascinatingly about her hatred and intentions. I'm not going to reveal who Malice is, but I can mention that her purpose was to bring destruction to the Land. The author wrote perfectly about how September felt about her changed body when she arrived in the Land. She suddenly looked more mature and had a fit woman's body. The author handled September's feelings and confusion well, because she had acquired the body she wanted to have and was a bit confused about what had happened to her.One of the best things about this novel is that September questioned certain things and wasn't sure if she really could be the person that the people of the Land wanted her to be. She didn't have any kind of practice of the skills that people talked about, but was told that she would learn to use the starstone and everybody had faith in her. This added quite a lot of depth to the story. It was interesting that when September used the stone to defeat evil, she drew the attention of the Malevolence towards herself and thus endangered herself and others around her. She was almost like a beacon to the evil and the evil tried to find her. The Malevolence reacted quickly to her presence and tried to attack her.One of the most intriguing aspects of this novel is that it doesn't have a normal kind of an evil person, because the evil comes to the people of the Land from beyond the sphere of stars and manifests itself in many ways and wreaks havoc into people's lives. The manifestations are formed of the four elements of earth, air, fire and water. Reading about this kind of cosmic evil was fascinating for me, because it's been a long time since I've read anything like this in new fantasy novels. Normally when authors write about cosmic evil, it's often related to Lovecraftian weird fiction and horror fiction, but not in this case, because this novel is Celtically inspired fantasy. There were many excellent scenes in this novel. As an example, I can mention that it was interesting to read about the fierce birds that were ridden by pure wickedness, the Adarllwchgwin (the Adarllwchgwin were manifestations of evil). There's also an excellent scene in which September notices that people can be affected by the Malevolence and may act dangerously towards others.Worldbuilding works nicely in this novel, because Peter R. Ellis has created an interesting fantasy world with seven different regions and gradually reveals more information about the world. In my opinion the author paints a vivid picture of the world and its different places. He easily evokes images in the reader's mind by writing about the landscapes without overwhelming the reader with too many details. I think it's possible to say that he has a traditional approach to worldbuilding and things related to it.The author writes realistically about village and town life, because he describes how people carry out their daily tasks and how they live their lives. People have a down-to-earth kind of way of life that will fascinate many readers. It's possible that experienced readers will notice that there are a few similarities to the novels written by J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula Le Guin and Stephen R. Donaldson. It's nice that the author has added certain elements from their novels to his story, but doesn't imitate their novels. He has created an original story that is faithful to its roots that lie in classic epic fantasy (there's a charmingly old-fashioned yet slightly modern feel to the story).I found it interesting that the author has courage to tell about how bad things happen to good people and how people can be affected by the powers of the Malevolence. For example, people were hurt and died when they tried to help September.I think it's good to mention that this novel has a useful pronunciation guide to the old tongue used by people of the Land (the old tongue is derived from Celtic languages such as Welsh). The glossary is also useful to readers, because it can be used to check certain words.Peter R. Ellis seems to be a good and talented young adult author, because he has written a debut fantasy novel that differs nicely from other young adult novels by having Celtic elements in it. I'll soon read the sequel, The Power of Seven, because I want to know how the story continues. Because the story was compelling and the ending was exciting, it'll be fun to find out what happens to September and other characters in the next novel.I give this novel strong four stars, because it's a good debut novel that will be of interest to many readers. It's something a bit different.Peter R. Ellis' Seventh Child is an entertaining fantasy novel. The author has written a story that pulls readers into another world that is different from our world, but also reminiscent of it. If you like entertaining and exciting epic fantasy that can be recommended to young adult and adult readers alike, this is the novel that you've been looking for, because it's good entertainment for both readerships. An intriguing fantasy novel with Celtic elements!

Exciting ending which made me want to read the next book. The blurb was good and enticing but I didn’t like the cover much.’ Boy, aged 15‘Gwlad, the fantasy land was well described. Brigadier James Hargest was a decorated New Zealand officer who served during World War I and II. Having fought in the bloody battles of the Invasion of Crete, he went on to lead the 5th Brigade in the Western Desert during Operation Crusader but was captured soon into the campaign. Never one to take a defeat lying down Hargest, determined to escape his Italian Prisoner of War camp “Campo 12”, this journey and its adventures are recounted here in this book of his journey to Switzerland and freedom. Throwing himself back into the fray immediately he served on staff during the invasion of Normandy, but was killed by shellfire in August 1944. As one of only three men known to British Military Intelligence to have successfully escaped an Italian PoW camp, Hargest was awarded a second bar to his DSO and was later appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
