Collaboration. Empowerment. Student Leadership. These buzz words get a lot of press, but what do they really mean for today's students? Can students really handle the responsibility of leading the class? Can they actually learn what they need to if they are working together so often? Won't all this freedom cause chaos in the classroom? Not if you're teaching them to learn like PIRATES! Peer Collaboration builds community and supports teamwork and cooperation. Improvement-focused learning challenges students to constantly strive to be their best. Responsibility for daily tasks builds ownership in the classroom. Active learning turns boring lessons into fun and memorable experiences. Twenty-first century skills engage students now and prepare them for their futures. Empowerment allows students to become confident risk-takers who make bold decisions. In Learn Like a PIRATE, teachers will discover practical strategies for creating a student-led classroom in which students are inspired and empowered to take charge of their learning experience. You'll learn strategies for: - Crafting active, relevant, and interesting lessons - Creating opportunities for student leadership - Providing effective and beneficial feedback - Instilling confidence so students can take risks - Increasing curiosity and passion for learning Incorporate the techniques and strategies Paul Solarz uses in his student-led classroom and watch your students transform into confident, collaborative leaders."In Learn Like a PIRATE, Paul Solarz explains how to design classroom experiences that encourage students to take risks and explore their passions in a stimulating, motivating, and supportive environment where improvement, rather than grades, is the focus. The particular techniques (and the underlying philosophy) he offers are highly consistent with teaching practice at the distinguished level in my Framework for Teaching. In that model, I tried to describe, at the distinguished level, classrooms in which the teacher has created a community of learners, with the students themselves assuming much of the responsibility for what occurs there. Mr. Solarz offers specific ideas for how to accomplish that."- Charlotte Danielson, author of Enhancing Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching"As I read Learn Like A PIRATE I regretted that I was not teaching in the classroom where I would be able to work with students in the thoughtful and imaginative ways that he suggests. It is rare that we have a first hand report of the day to day practicalities of transforming classes into places where students can become self-directed, curious, interdependent learners. Paul has succeeded in sharing his passion for authentic 21st century teaching as well as inspiring us to imitate and invent our own models for preparing our students for an increasingly complex world of invention and problem solving."- Bena Kallick, Co-director of the Institute for Habits of Mind

Learn Like a PIRATE: Empower Your Students to Collaborate, Lead, and Succeed, by Paul Solarz

Review "For learning to be relevant and meaningful in the eyes of students today school experiences need to be more learner centric. Paul Solarz has crafted the perfect guide to help invigorate classroom learning experiences to empower students to take ownership over their learning."- Eric Sheninger, Senior Fellow at the International Center for Leadership in Education and author of Digital Leadership "Would your class fall apart without you? Could your students learn if you didn't speak for an entire day? In Learn Like a PIRATE, Paul Solarz shares methods you can use to create a student-led classroom -- and prepare your students for a lifetime of self-led learning."- Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind "While many teachers tend to be at the helm of the ship, Learn Like a PIRATE is a model for teaching from the crow's nest: having a clear vantage point of the class and its direction, but letting students steer their learning. Paul has recaptured the "pirate" spirit in his own way. Diving into the activities of his classroom, we see how students take charge of their learning--and how daring teachers make it happen."- Angela Maiers, Founder of Choose2Matter and author of The Passion Driven Classroom and Classroom HabitudesThere are countless books and articles on how to change school systems to pave the way for 21st Century Education, and most of them are, at best, wishful thinking for an implicitly distant future. Paul Solarz's book is invaluable in that it tells the real life story of how he is doing that right now in his classroom.- Gabriel Rshaid, Professional Development Associate at The Leadership and Learning Center and author of The 21st-Century Classroom

About the Author Paul Solarz has been teaching at Westgate Elementary School in Arlington Heights, Illinois, since 1999.  He advocates for student-centered teaching practices and a focus on 21st Century skills attainment.  Fortunately for Paul, his school and district administration have given him the autonomy to take risks and be innovative over the years. This has led to his unique style of teaching and the motivation to share his strategies with the broader education community.  Recently, Paul was named a Top 50 Finalist for the Varkey GEMS Global Teacher Prize.  The Global Teacher Award seeks to do for education what the Nobel Prize has done for science, literature, and peace.  He was also named the 2014 Educator of the Year by ICE (Illinois Computing Educators) for his work with integrating technology effectively in his classroom.  He earned his masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Illinois State University and is a National Board Certified Teacher.  He also earned his bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Winona State University in Minnesota.Check out the Learn Like a PIRATE website with additional resources at learnlikeapirate.com/

By Brian For those educators who believe in collaborative learning and empowering students, this book not only reinforces your beliefs, but it also gives fresh insights and ideas to try in your classroom. For educators who are on the fence about trying more collaborative learning strategies, I strongly encourage you to read Paul's book. From the first few pages, the reader is hooked, as if a PIRATE has hooked a fish. One of the things I enjoy the most about the book is that I do not recall one time where the focus of a single paragraph was on Paul's students' standardized test scores. I am an educator, and I am a "data-nerd." I know there is a place for some of the data we are required to track. It is refreshing, though, to read a book that is literally all about the students and strategies a teacher uses to make the classroom about the students. This book shows educators that the critical content of state standards can be addressed without students sitting in rows all facing the board. The students we teach are growing up in a social world; with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Our methods must change some to address the changes that are taking place in our world. The ideas and insights in this book are relevant. The comments and anecdotes are from the teacher, his students, or his students' parents. You can tell that Mr. Solarz truly believes in what he teaches. I encourage all educators (and even non educators) to pick the book up and give it a try. Even if a full day of student's leading a classroom isn't "your thing", I know everyone can at least pull some ideas out of this book to try in their classroom to give students some say in how they learn. It's most definitely a book for all!

By Beth Houf Learn Like a PIRATE is an inspiring and practical guide to the creation of a true student-led classroom. Paul Solarz has created a virtual pop-up book that takes you inside of his students' classroom while modeling for the reader the necessary components to successful implementation. The book is complete with web resources and authentic examples from those in charge of the learning in the classroom--his students. Solarz takes a topic that could be overwhelming and breaks it down into manageable and replicable steps for educators. These ideas can be applied to the classroom, but also easily adapted for school leaders to use in the creation of a teacher-led school. Many authors use quotes to illustrate concepts and this book is no different, however, Solarz uses quotes from his students and parents. These quotes showcase the powerful learning that has occurred and sustained over the years because of the collaboration, leadership and ownership his students have had for their learning. What better way to illustrate the power of why we should Learn Like a PIRATE! Thank you so much to Paul Solarz for creating a guide for educators to make this a reality!

I've followed @paulsolarz on Twitter for some time and am truly a sponge for all the collaborative classroom ideas that he shares with us. This book is brilliant! He takes us into his classroom, sharing what works, sharing notes from parents and students, and QR codes on pages that take you directly to his blog posts where you can see his classroom in action first hand. In this book you'll gain ideas for setting up a student-led classroom with a plethora of resources. Paul shares how he makes it happen on a budget- I loved his Shared Reading idea using his kindle, his classroom meeting agenda, how he teaches empathy, how he uses responsibility partners, give me 5s, sets up behavior for success, how he uses portfolios to show evidence of growth, how routines/rituals and classroom jobs help establish a culture. I loved the input on competitive games, project based learning and found it refreshing to learn how Paul has infused great leaders like Kylene Beers' Signposts for close reading and Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.I could go on and on! I bought 4 books and gave them to friends to read as soon as I finished it. Curious as to what REARJMCL is all about? Read the book to find out! Super great stuff!
