To many in the United Kingdom, the British public school remains the disliked and mistrusted embodiment of privilege and elitism. They have educated many of the country’s top bankers and politicians over the centuries right up to the present, including the present Prime Minister. David Turner’s vibrant history of Great Britain’s public schools, from the foundation of Winchester College in 1382 to the modern day, offers a fresh reappraisal of the controversial educational system. Turner argues that public schools are, in fact, good for the nation and are presently enjoying their true “Golden Age,” countering the long-held belief that these institutions achieved their greatest glory during Great Britain’s Victorian Era. Turner’s engrossing and enlightening work is rife with colorful stories of schoolboy revolts, eccentric heads, shocking corruption, and financial collapse. His thoughtful appreciation of these learning establishments follows the progression of public schools from their sometimes brutal and inglorious pasts through their present incarnations as vital contributors to the economic, scientific, and political future of the country.

Review ‘David Turner’s brisk and balanced history of public schools is about change, controversies and paradoxes.’—Lawrence James, the Times. An Enjoyable, Thought-Provoking History of UK Public Schools By Ellen Davis A very readable, and enjoyable, history of public schools in the United Kingdom. I've lived in this country for 15 years, and found this book has pulled together several threads of history for me -- not just educational history, but political, social, and ecclesiastical history too. Partly because those who have graduated from public schools have so dominated those fields of endeavor here. And I thought Turner's treatment of the history of public schools to be fair and even-handed. He is very critical of them in places -- the level of education boys received, the physical violence handed out, the corruption that led to the near-downfall of many of these institutions. This is no Pollyanna view of these institutions. But he does also point to the successes that they had. So this is not the hatchet job of these establishments that some other authors would produce (and a few newspaper reviewers somehow feel a compulsive need to see). And best of all, he finds data to support his conclusions where he can -- numbers of pupils, percentages who went into different occupations, etc. He also uses specific accounts of individuals, both famous and ordinary, to support his conclusions. And all of this with a mischievous sense of humor woven through. I was guilty of laughing out loud on the train more than once. This is both a serious, thought-provoking work and a fun read. I highly recommend it.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great read By IAN C FORSYTH This engaging & informative book is a success by any standard of measurement. First it is successful by the author's standards in that he successfully answers the questions he poses on page x on how public schools sank into a state as depicted in Tom Brown's School Days & have they improved since then to the point where they are an asset to the nation. Not many writers are able to pose thoughtful questions as inspiration for their books & fewer still successfully answer those questions; this writer has. This book is also successful by a reader's standards, in that the reader comes away with a deep understanding of the historical evolution of one of the pillars of the British Empire. In other words, the reader comes away greatly informed & enlightened. Lastly, this book is successful by an editor's standards in that it is written in an engaging style that flows well, stays focused, but never becomes dry or listless. As an American, this reviewer at times felt a slight disadvantage not knowing the time periods, nor the monarchs, nor much of the political geography referred to in this book, but such a disadvantage becomes an asset because it spurred this reviewer to familiarize himself with those elements. This reviewer highly recommends this book, & for any Americans out there who follow the current administration in 10 Downing Street or are fans of Downton Abbey, this book is a must-read.

Genovese, Gambino, Bonnano, Colombo, and Lucchese. For decades these Five Families ruled New York and built the American Mafia (or Cosa Nostra) into an underworld empire. Today, the Mafia is an endangered species, battered and beleaguered by aggressive investigators, incompetent leadership, betrayals, and generational changes that produced violent, unreliable leaders and recruits. A 20-year assault against the five families in particular blossomed into the most successful law enforcement campaign of the last century.

Selwyn Raab's Five Families is the vivid story of the rise and fall of New York's premier dons, from Lucky Luciano to Paul Castellano to John Gotti and more. The book also brings the listener right up to the possible resurgence of the Mafia as the FBI and local law enforcement agencies turn their attention to homeland security and away from organized crime.

Hiscox The prior reviews that seem peeved that this book offers little in the way of revelations or breakthrough analysis are accurate. If you are one of the country's great experts, OK, you've heard it before; don't buy the book. For everyone else, this is an excellent review of the New York Mafia, what they did, who did it, and the enforcement brought against them. I own over a hundred organized crime books, and this is the one I would recommend to someone looking for the best possible overview of the Five Families. It is comprehensive, factual and well-written.

Having read several Mob-related books, some great, some trashy, I can say with some authority that Selwyn Raab's book is the best historical volume ever on the Mafia, and brings us up to the present. From its start during Prohibition, the founding of "The Commission" by Lucky Luciano and later events such as the whacking of Paul Castellano and the rise and fall of John Gotti, and the travails of sinister Mob figures like Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso, probably the most vicious mobster ever, and Vincent "Chin" Gigante, to whom even Gotti was deferential, "Five Families" offers a comprehensive yet never tedious look into New York's five Mob families, or "borgatas" and their successes and failures. While attention is paid to John Gotti, Raab wisely divvies up his time evenly among the families, avoiding the overkill of Gotti stories other books have fallen prey to. His work on more recent figures is especially interesting. We have always had a fascination with charismatic criminals, from the old days of the West with Billy The Kid, Butch Cassidy, to Al Capone, Luciano and John Gotti. It's the stuff of legend, but we must remember not to become admirers of these outlaws, as Raab points out through his details of some of their meanest and sadistic acts. Nonetheless, it's compelling and a great view into the underworld, its way of life and its prime movers and shakers. Over 700 pages long, and worth every sentence.

By Sage This is a great book on the history of the American Mafia with some new insights on its origins and how it came to the US, also how it functioned and bled New York for 70+ years. Raab has a done a masterful job of combing through the myriad newspaper, court dcuments and sources out there and assembled a chronological narrative of each of New York's Mafia Families. It is a rivetting read, entertaining and informative. It gives new insights into the semi-legit rackets and old history like Apalachin, JFK's assassination, Luciano's war-time aid to the US, and Jimmy Hoffa. Of particulr value is how the new focus on terrorism post 9/11 may give the Mafia a chance to regroup. However, these strengths are also its weaknesses. It focuses exclusively on New York City. It says how New York made satellites of Mafia Families in other cities but never explains how things worked in other cities or how the New York Families subjugated other mafia groups around the country. It also would have been intersting to learn how New York mafia groups related to and cooperated with families in other cities, especially Chicago. It never explains how the New York Families could run crews in other cities with active Mafia Families, like Newark and California.Raab also relies heavily on FBI and Court transcripts, and sometimes his explaining the investigations and pursuit of the gangsters is too long and pulls the book off track. We want to learn about the Mafia and how it functions, not read a police investigative-procedural drama. The most glaring mis-step is Raab's over-simplification and neglect of other criminal organizations, especially Meyer Lansky, Moe Dalitz and other Jewish gagnsters. He falls into the unsophisticated, overly simple and even anti-Semitic line of how Meyer Lansky, Moe Dalitz and other Jewish mobsters were merely "junior partners" and "accountants" for the Mafia. Lansky, Shapiro and others were major bootleggers and labor racketeers in their own right. They worked in conjuction and on equal footing with Luciano and Mafia gangs. Jewish and Italian gangsters during Prohibition and after formed a symbiotic partnership. Lansky never would have been as successful as he was without his partnership with Luciano, and vice versa. Lansky and Dalitz took their bootlegging profits and began building Las Vegas, Luciano and Cstello and other Mafia magnates were equal partners to be sure. The hit on Siegel almost certainly came from Lansky. Lansky and Dalitz needed no financial backing or approval from the Five Famlies. The Mafia's later success in skimming the Vegas casinos would not have been possible without the pioneering efforts of the multi-ethnic and sophisticated syndicate that emerged from prohibition.Raab also completely ignores major bootleg/gambling syndicates such as Lansky/Siegel, Legs Daimond or Waxy Gordon in New York, Boo Boo Hoff in Philadelphia, Longy Zwillman in Newark, Moe Dalitz in Cleveland or the Purple Gang in Detroit. These syndicates needed no backing or permission from any Mafia family to operate and run successful criminal enterprises. After Prohibition, Lansky, Dalitz and others continued to engage in lucrative financial rackets, money laundering, and major casino operations in Las Vegas, the Bahamas, Switzerland and Monte Carlo into the 1970's. These sophisticated white collar crimes dwarfed the more provincial operations of extortion, loan sharking and drug pushing engaged in by most street crews of New York's Five Families. By suggesting that these Jewish criminals could only at the most serve as trusted accountats to Mafia families not only falls into worn out offensive stereotypes but also gives an inccurate picture of the true nature of organized crime.Raab also gives short shrift to Russian, Asian and multi-national organized crime syndicates operating in the nation today. In making the Mafia the center of organized crime activities he has given a myopic picture of organized crime, past and present. Law eforcement's high profile and much touted focus on the 5 Mafia gangs has probably given these newer criminal syndicates room to grow and expand from the 1980's through today.Raab sets out to write a history of New York's 5 Mafia Families and he succeeds in spades. His only weakness is taking the mystique of the mafia at face value and portraying them as the end-all and be-all of organized crime in New York and throughout the country.

Despite the gruesome nature everything about this novel exuded class. I think this may well be Debra Webb's best novel to date. There was a family theme which was uplifting to read. The revenge-bent villains were quite understandable and different to the horrific and sickening Eric Spears of the Faces of Evil series making it much more enjoyable to read.Debra Webb is at the top of her game and having read almost all of her novels I think this one is her best to date... (Although my favourite character is still the Deaf Detective femme fatale for serial killers...)

What do these men have in common besides money and power that they have kept secret for so long? Not only is a murderer loose in the town but one of Jessie’s friends has something on her mind lately. This was such a good book and I enjoyed it so much that I read it twice. There is a reason Debra Webb is one of my favorite authors. She writes great romantic suspense books!

Additionally, it offers an insider's view to the production of the TV-series: The Curse of Oak Island. In the book Amundsen explains how William Shakespeare's First Folio functions as a Treasure Map, created by the Fraternity of The Rosy Cross. The final chapter includes a brand-new, mind-blowing discovery, made by film director Jørgen Friberg, confirming that The Ark if the Covenant is a prime candidate to be part of the fabled treasure.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. My review of Petter Amundsen's (formerly The Organist) The SEVEN STEPS TO MERCY with Shakespeare's Key to the Oak Island Templum By Peggy_TX My correspondence with Petter began in early January 2015. In mid-March, Petter invited me, and I subsequently volunteered, to be a proofreader for him on his project of translating his book "The Organist" into English. Like almost all of you, I had watched Season 2 of Curse of Oak Island as it came to a cliff-hanging end, and I was completely hooked on this mystery!! But I hadn't really started my own research until I began chatting with Petter. My personal book interests and range of subjects are pretty eclectic. I gravitate to non-fiction and biographies, but I love great mysteries, conspiracy theories, history, and I'm into genealogy and Bible research. There's also usually a circle-a-word puzzle book lying around my house, with a handy pencil.I began initially, as I hope many of you will, by reading Petter's ebook "Oak Island & The Treasure Map in Shakespeare". This book was the catalyst of my intrigue and curiosity because it revealed more than what the show had aired about Petter's research, and made me want to read "The Organist" even more. Early on, I realized that Petter's theory had logic, reason, and probability to it. I soon learned that the complexity of Petter's theory would require an investment of my time, but I was more than ready, willing, and very excited to dive into it, because I wanted to know.I must admit, I've never really been a Shakespeare enthusiast, but English and History were always my favorite subjects in school, along with music. Petter, being an organist in a church, also brought common ground to our conversations, but also made me realize his ability to read things other people might over look.Petter's original book, The Organist, covered every inch of his theory. From inception, to a trail of clues taking one through all sorts of subjects, to include: literature, philosophy, religion, history, language, geometry, symbolism, astronomy, secret societies, geography, and of course, lost buried treasures. But it was written in 2006, and was never translated into English.A multitude of things seemed to have happened with the story, and Petter, since the delivery of that book, so being on the cutting edge of this new and fully updated version--naturally my answer was an immediate YES!! when Petter asked me to assist him with his task of finally translating the book into English.Petter's story is told through the eyes of his interviewer and co-author, Erlend Loe, a fellow Norwegian. Petter takes Loe through a meticulous and pathological journey of a 400 year old treasure saga, that magnetically draws the reader in, right from the beginning. Loe soon learns that Petter has not only done his research thoroughly within Shakespeare's First Folio, but has also discovered a multitude of repeated "mistakes" and elaborate ciphers that are so notable that Loe's skepticism soon turns into tangible proof. Proof that not only did Shakespeare's works contain these clues and ciphers, but that they were indisputably crafted by Francis Bacon, and his closest allies. Petter also takes us to the very gravestone of Shakespeare to prove not only did this secret group construct and hide the treasure map within the plays, but paralleled their scheme to build a New Solomon's Temple in the New World in order to hide the manuscripts, and a treasure of epic ancient proportion.Petter leads Loe through a grand cryptic maze of cipher clues that explain the Rosicrucian philosophy of Bacon and his apprentices and why they went to such amazing lengths to do this. Then further, through constellation clues in a grand celestial map, Petter takes a trip to Oak Island Nova Scotia. Here he proves his genius theory, of a Cabbalistic Tree of Life, by digging up the stones that prove to be exactly where he calculated them to be.But the New book, brings even more! Petter gives the reader an inside and personal view about the making of his film, "Shakespeare the Hidden Truth", and his involvement on the show, "The Curse of Oak Island" in wonderfully intimate detail. He also ties in other research he has done, such as the Shugburough Hall inscription cipher enigma, which he solves brilliantly! Even distinctive clues within the King James Version of the Bible itself that truly make case-closed, the connection and authorship of Shakespeare by Bacon & company are revealed.Every single Chapter, and 3 additional Epilogues will make you feel like the Indiana Jones of Oak Island, and answer every single question of Who? What? When? Why? and How? about the treasure yet to be unearthed on the island, and the motivation of those behind it.Petter's revised book gives total merit to his theory, and completely sorts out the chronological order of his discoveries, sources all of his research, and lays it all out where there can be no doubt remaining of its literally rock-solid validity. His knowledge of European History and Masonic symbolism, combined with multiple language skills, and his desire to collect original books and understand their true meanings, make him uniquely qualified to bring this story full circle. This book is a must read for every Oak Island enthusiast, no matter what level of interest.Petter anxiously awaits the publishing of his book, as do I. When it does arrive on bookshelves across America and Canada, I will be exceptionally proud and honored that he included me in this thrilling process. It's been a journey I will never forget, and when the treasure of Oak Island is finally revealed, I think we will soon see that History will definitely have to be re-written.

A Fascinating Journey into English Renaissance Cryptography & Its Shakespearean Map to the Arcadian Treasure on Oak Island By Brad Clark Erlend Loe is a Norwegian novelist, screenwriter and film critic who, through a series of fourteen interview-type meetings (made into chapters) with fellow Norwegian and researcher Petter Amundsen, is introduced to cryptographic discoveries made by Petter that answer the Shakespeare authorship question in a way that has never been done before. Those discoveries are also linked through a hidden celestial map to the famous treasure-hunt site of Oak Island in Nova Scotia (which was, at one time, known as “Arcadia”).As a reader one shares in Erlend’s progressive initiation into the discoveries and cryptographic methods by which they were found, beginning with Petter’s own journey into the subject through the mysterious 1920s novel The Tunnel Thru the Air by the legendary trader William D. Gann. It was discovered that Gann himself was a “Baconian” (one who believed Francis Bacon was the mastermind behind the Shakespeare corpus) and a friend of Baconian Manly P. Hall. This emphasis on Bacon led Petter into his own original research and discoveries as presented in this book, including the discovery of elaborate 17th century Rosicrucian involvement and a Cabalistic Tree of Life made out of stones on Oak Island that incorporates and extends beyond what is known as “Nolan’s Cross”.Unlike the title of Petter’s earlier and shorter ebook “Oak Island & The Treasure Map in Shakespeare”, the title of this one is cryptic and the interpretation is revealed through the meetings between Erlend and Petter, although I will say that it involves Freemasonry’s Square and Compasses as well as the Tree of Life and its “Mercy” Sephirot. This is not a book to simply read through and set aside. It requires repeated study because one will soon realize that the beautiful cryptography involved here was created by Renaissance genius of the highest order. Not only is this shown throughout the meetings, but it is also shown in the book's two Epilogues through Petter’s expert analysis of the famous motto “Et in Arcadia ego” in paintings from the 1600s and how this phrase is also found in Shakespeare. The discoveries are startling, and Petter’s own genius in discovering them honors those who masterfully hid them.I did not care about Shakespeare before I discovered Petter’s work, beginning with his Sweet Swan of Avon series of four hour-long episodes free on Vimeo. His research, including this book, has changed my life for the better and gave me an appreciation and respect for the works of Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, and his devoted literary associates that I did not have before. One realizes that this is not just about ciphers or hidden treasure but about the greatest values that the human mind can conceive. I highly recommend this!

By Glo in Philly While the theory presented in this book may have some basis in fact and may appear at least somewhat credible, I found it to be incredibly tedious reading and actually fell asleep three times trying to get through the first few chapters. Nevertheless, I carried on simply because I like to get to the end of a book before forming an opinion. It is true that the centuries leading up to Shakespeare's time were fraught with peril as that era saw a number of powerful and corrupt bishops and popes bent on destroying all who failed to kiss their robes. In fact, the Catholic church - such as it was then - had as much blood on its hands as Al Quaida and ISIS today. One needs only to pick up a volume or two on the history of religion to confirm this. Those corrupt heads of the church were credited with wiping out bands of innocent island natives who failed to convert as well as turning on their former champions, the Knights Templar, and eventually executing the remaining members, but that's another story.Fast forward several centuries to where the Catholics are still burning and beheading but corrupt monarchs are added to the mix. It's easy to see why the by then paranoid masses felt a need to employ codes and ciphers to communicate sensitive information and keep their precious secrets from falling into the wrong hands. Because I am familiar with that history, it is easy for me to believe there may be a hidden message encoded in the writings of Shakespeare - Petter Amundsen does make some convincing arguments. What I find difficult to grasp within the pages of this book are the numerous illustrations where the author has circled select words or letters within words in the various Shakespeare sonnets, drawn triangles over some pages and circles with lines through them over others to come up with the hidden message. How did he begin? How did he know exactly where to place that triangle or circle on the page? Did he simply open the book, scan a page and say, "Oh look, there's a space between two letters that shouldn't be there. What could it mean?" Apparently so. And if that's the case, what is the reader to make of the fact that within the pages of his own book there are also inconsistencies in the print? Are these, too, coded messages from the author? (See the duplicated paragraphs on pages 132 and 133, the unnecessary space between a dollar sign and the number 300 on page 159 as well as an unfinished sentence at the bottom of page 206 as examples - more are obvious as you read through the book.) Or is it simply poor editing and typesetting? As I read through the first half-dozen chapters of this material my mind kept going back to the 2001 movie, A Beautiful Mind, about the brilliant mathematician John Nash who suffered from schizophrenia. In one scene, Nash has filled the walls of his garage with pages from the local newspaper. On each page words and phrases were circled, lines drawn to link words and phrases together to form a jumbled message that was incoherent to all but Nash himself. Perhaps it is the interview style in which the material is presented that makes it difficult to find some of it credible. Perhaps this book is just another brain-teaser conceived by the author himself specifically for puzzle aficionados. Either way, it's a tough slog through Amundsen's dissection of ancient texts and maps. Tackle it if you dare. Added note: Since writing this review I have read the book 'The Oak Island Mystery Solved' by Joy A. Steele. Ms. Steele's theory for the presence of the pits on Oak Island is very convincing and backed by historical research. Her book was originally published in the 1960's and reprinted in 2014. It makes me wonder if the current treasure hunters on the island have read it. If they had, I believe it would have saved them quite a bit of time and money.

Number 31 Squadron RAF will celebrate its centenary in 2015; a pivotal milestone for a Squadron engaged at the forefront of military activity for the past 100 years. With a number of events lined up to celebrate this important anniversary, former Commanding Officer of the Squadron, Ian Hall, has set himself the ambitious task of penning the Squadron's entire history, from formation right up to current-day activities. This lively and informative narrative is interspersed with first-hand accounts taken from interviews conducted with the men who made/make up the Squadron. The first twenty-five years of the Squadron's history were spent on India's North-West Frontier, hence the Squadron motto 'First in the Indian Skies'. During the Second World War, it was occupied mainly in the Middle East and North Africa, before moving to the Burma theatre for the remainder of the war. Upon returning to the UK in 1948, the Squadron performed communications duties until, in 1955, it joined the Cold War in West Germany, operating successively in reconnaissance and strike/attack roles. Operational deployment in recent years has seen the Squadron deployed during the Gulf War, the Iraq War, in Kosovo, and Afghanistan. With troops pulling out of Afghanistan in 2014, 31 Squadron have now completed a circular history, and there seems no better time than now to commit it to print. Each and every facet of this long and varied history is relayed in a style that serves to provide an account that is at once celebratory and objective when it comes to recording not only the facts of the various deployments but also the personal stories of the men behind the headlines.

Richmond I'm wondering how many of the reviews for this book are genuine and how many planted by the publisher of this guide. Looks like they are mostly fake as they hit so far from the mark. This is the single worst travel guide I have ever experienced. Complete junk. About the best use I can think for it is to use as toilet paper when you encounter a Chinese facility without any -- except the paper is too rough for even that except in a dire emergency. The book has no detail -- just general descriptions of a tiny number of things to see in Shanghai. Astonishingly, there are no maps. just a few black and white photos. The eating guide cites only four restaurants. You get the idea: the publisher wants your money and to give you nothing of value in return. Steer well clear. This publication is a joke -- a pure rip-off/

Great if you're planning a trip or just want to learn more about our great world By Carrie Dowling I am employed by a Global Corporation that has many employees and a strong presence in Asia Pacific. As a result of working with so many of these fine folks remotely I decided that I wanted to consider planning a trip to Shanghai not only to see such a beautiful locale but also meet these wonderful people. The books primary function, in my opinion, would be trip planning and becoming more familiar with the country before arriving. Many people would not be comfortable making such a long trip to such an unfamiliar nation -- this would be great for familiarizing yourself before making the decision to go as well. There's a lot of great information in the book including a sample itinerary you can use to follow or modify to meet your needs. It's also got information for dining, shopping, sight seeing, etc. It also had useful phrases in Chinese and information about exchange rates and other survival tips that you need to travel like a pro.The writing is good and the information is thorough and interesting. The pictures are colorful and, as they say, worth 1,000 words. It does make you want to take the trip even if you aren't planning on going soon and can give you some more awareness about our friends to the West.As a reviewer I received this book for free in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Natural Science in 9 entertaining chapters By Larissa Goruk In a novel approach, this book explores how the natural environment impacts us rather than on how we impact it. "We are stardust" is a true statement scientifically, not just metaphorically. In clear and accessible language, the author explains how everything, including human beings, are made up of countless atoms, composed of elements which first appeared billions of years ago.Fairly easy for the non-scientific among us (including myself) this book is entertaining as well as informative. A good addition to your reading list.It would benefit from a Table of Contents and closer editing for grammar.

Archibald (1894-1975) joined the fledgling U.S. Army Air Service in the spring of 1917, underwent flight training in the U.S. and France, and began his hazardous patrol and combat duty in the skies against the Germans. THE RISE OF A PHOENIX FROM WAR'S ASHES By KOMET Norman Archibald (1894-1975), the author of this book, reflects upon his experiences as a fighter pilot with the 95th Aero Squadron of the First Pursuit Group in France during the summer of 1918. In doing so, he also shares with the reader his enthusiasm with flying, which led him to join the U.S. Army Air Service in the spring of 1917. Archibald's description of his flight training, both in the U.S. and in France, where he was among a number of aviation cadets placed into an accelerated training scheme, give the reader a tangible sense of both the thrills and hazards of flying. For this was an era in which Allied pilots flew without parachutes, and mechanical and structural failures were seemingly more the rule than the exception.Archibald's tenure at the Front lasted a couple of months before his fighter plane was forced down behind enemy lines. Following his capture, he also provides the reader with a view of the First World War prisoner of war experience that has been lost on most people for the past century. This is a thrilling and poignant war memoir that I recommend for anyone who wants to begin to educate him/herself in this centenary year on how someone managed to survive "the war to end all wars."

It was thorough, accurate, interesting, not egotisical in any way, and contained information lacking in similar books; information such as descriptions of aircraft combat maneuvers and life as a prisoner of war. It was extremely well written and the author was someone who was on site, someone who had real-time information. I would recommend it to anyone from the well-read historian of this genre to someone who only wanted to read one book on WWI Aviation. It was just that good. An added bonus was that it was a chosen book for the Wings of War series, a very nicely done series of books, each handpicked.

Written by respected teachers and leading educational consultants Allison Zmuda, Greg Curtis, and Diane Ullman, this comprehensive resource explores what personalized learning looks like, how it changes the roles and responsibilities of every stakeholder, and why it inspires innovation. The authors explain that, in order to create highly effective personalized learning experiences, a new instructional design is required that is based loosely on the traditional model of apprenticeship: learning by doing.

Learning Personalized challenges educators to rethink the fundamental principles of schooling that honors students' natural willingness to play, problem solve, fail, re-imagine, and share. This groundbreaking resource:

  • Addresses needs and provides guidance specific to the job descriptions of various types of educators, administrators, and other staff

This invaluable educational resource explores a simple framework for personalized learning: co-creation, feedback, sharing, and learning that is as powerful for a teacher to re-examine classroom practice as it is for a curriculum director to reexamine the structure of courses.

By Jill Thompson This book, unlike other Personalized Learning books I have read, concentrates on the pedagogical shift to student centered learning. It addresses how technology is only a vehicle in the process but the change really occurs when the teacher makes the shift in the role from lecturer to coach. The book offers practical advice, suggestions and resources including examples as models.

By Robert Kuklis I highly recommend Learning Personalized as an exceedingly useful book for educators wishing to engage individual students in learning. The authors reference and use varied and pertinent sources to illuminate the meaning and effectiveness of personalized student learning. They present tables that are carefully crafted to provide a coherent framework for key ideas and their essential elements. An excellent Personalized Learning Evolution table serves as the primary core reference point for working through how to develop a student-centered education. The authors’ examples and explanations of these deepen understanding of core concepts and provide the reader with rich and relevant models for authentic student learning. The examples follow templates that make sense and can be adopted by teachers readily. These templates are designed for teachers to develop powerful instructional strategies, materials, and tasks/activities/assessments to engage students in learning. From my perspective, Learning Personalized is a major source for educational reform that focuses directly student engagement in productive learning.

There are many thoughts about this topic out there and the authors do a great job setting the stage for their point of view. After two years of research on our own, our school found this work and it mirrors many ideas we found and we are grateful to the authors for their practical resources and organizational ideas. Our principal is buying this for our entire school. If you only read one book on this topic. THIS is it!

Writing 007 By Jane If you want to try your hand at story writing but aren’t sure how to start, Langston’s textbook Write Naked! will go a long way in alleviating your angst.Langston takes the “architect” approach* to story telling. He walks the reader through the basics of story structure, giving illustrations along the way. If the reader is diligent, he/she will be able to create an entire story skeleton by the time he/she has finished working through the text. Langston’s approach is clear, methodical, and sprinkled with humor. It will not intimidate those new to storytelling. The book is fundamentally a book on story mechanics. While it does contain advice which will be valuable when the time comes to flesh out a story line, the book cannot save a pupil who lacks fundamental writing skills. If you have slept through your English classes or are not a reader, Langston’s text will advance your writing but will not a one-stop shop on your way to publication.I recommend Write Naked! for what it DOES provide: clear instruction, a number of helpful tools, and ample encouragement. It pains me that the dated and sexist nature of Langston’s humor prevent me from offering a general endorsement of a text which might otherwise benefit a wider readership. As it stands, it is likely to be best received by the middle aged (male?) beginner.(see quote by George R. R. Martin describing writers as architects or gardeners at http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/749309-i-think-there-are-two-types-of-writers-the-architects)

Mainly because my reading time is limited and when I’m not reading for pleasure, I’m reading for work. I have started more craft books than I can name and fully intend to return to them at some point. It’s rare I pick one up and read it cover-to-cover. Even rarer still to find myself giggling through it. Most are, in my humble opinion, a bit dry. Often redundant. Some even read like they were written by a motivational speaker who has gotten into the schnapps. This book managed to be one of the rare ones I devoured, and I highly recommend it whether you’re a newbie looking for guidance, a veteran needing some reminders, or anywhere in between. Also, if you have a class to teach, use this book. Your students will thank you. Warning — bring your sense of humor. One of the things I love about Josh Langston’s writing is his sharp wit, and he manages to keep it handy even in the throws of instruction. Chapters are short and concise, and include exercises at the end — for your writerly brain, not your physical body.If you enjoy the lighter side of learning, then this book is for you. If you need to brush up on some of the finer points of penning prose, this book is for you. If you just want to be entertained whilst expanding your horizons, yeah, you guessed it. Go. Now. Enjoy.

This book is definitely written for grownups, but I can use all of the concepts in my classes as well as in my own writing. Actually, I have done so, but in this book, Langston has organized principles of good writing in a way that makes sense. One thought flows logically into the next, unlike many other books on writing. Typically, the standard writing textbook is separated into unrelated chapters in a sequence that makes no sense. This book explains why you do (or don't do) something, and makes it fun. Langston has written a book for real writers, not for academicians who don't care if their material is readable. Follow his often humorous suggestions, and your writing will improve significantly. His strategies will take your writing from mediocre to dynamic. If you're serious about writing, as I am, this has to be on your desk!
