Thoughtful opinions about discipline as the non-negotiable basis for learning , teachers' being armed in class, and the loss of status for education and for teachers are all here.My favourite part of the book is Ian's contention that there is a definite link between the quality of the cultural life of the country and the state of education. Culture derived from European sources died in the 1980's. The glorious jazz he listened to in his youth has been marginalised for several generations by major corporations that make musical pablum.for juvenilesIan's point is that education must be rescued from the barbarians in order for our country to thrive
