November 1915: Disgraced and stripped of high office, Winston Churchill heads to the trenches to fight. A quarter of a century before his "finest hour" in 1940, Britain's future Prime Minister faced a very different kind of crisis. As First Lord of the Admiralty at the start of the First World War, Churchill found himself blamed for the catastrophic military fiasco of the Dardanelles. Thrown for the first time into the political wilderness, he decided to rejoin the British Army and take his place on the Western Front. The first standalone account of this period of his life since the 1920s, Churchill in the Trenches reconstructs his six months near the Belgian town of Ypres. It reveals he how he gradually won over the troops he commanded -- the tough but traumatized 6th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. And it tells the largely unknown story of how amid mud and squalor, one of the 20th century's most memorable characters became one of its greatest leaders. Peter Apps is global defense correspondent for Reuters news. In 2006, he broke his neck in a minibus accident while covering the civil war in Sri Lanka, leaving him largely paralyzed from the shoulders down. Of the 20 or so countries he has reported from, more than half have been since the injury. He is currently on sabbatical as executive director of the Project for Study of the 21st Century (PS21) www.projects21.com. Cover design by Kerry Ellis.

Geschke This book coming in Kindle form is a new type of publication which is called a Kindle single. What is this you may ask, it is a unique and quick read much like a long story which gets to the point rather quickly and provides information on subjects such as Churchill’s time in the trenches during WWI serving as a Lt. Colonel. Churchill who was Lord of the Admiralty and who was dually sacked after one of the largest defeats of the British military on the straits of the Dardanelles in 1915, it was later proven that Churchill should have not shouldered the blame for the poor military execution. However at the time Winston felt the boot. Now out of government and only a backbencher, he decided to use what influence he had to command an army unit on the Western Front. Churchill arrived on the front in November of 1915. He was given command of a battalion in the Highlander Regiment. The author Peter Apps goes through the typical protocol of operations in such an army organization at this time of the war. He tells us of Churchill’s modus operandi, his discipline and attitudes of war. The need for cleanliness in a filthy environment was in some way a comical but also serious way of looking out for his men. Reactions of his subordinates were detailed and give to us a clear picture as to what kind of leader Churchill was both militarily and personally. As noted by the author, Churchill was experienced in war and though the civilian head of the Navy, he was first and foremost a cavalry man and a graduate of Sand Hurst. In 1898 Churchill took part in the last great cavalry charge at the Battle of Omdurman. To Churchill this experience influenced him as he came back into the government and changed his attitudes of a stagnant war and made him aware of the need for maneuver and the need to end a war as quickly as possible. Good insight in a white paper form.

By Arie Kuipers Wonderfully written account of Churchill's exploits on the Western Front during WWI. The book is informative, entertaining, and insightful-- I recommend it to both students of history and layperson alike.

Chambers Disgraced by the disastrous Dardanelles campaign against the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1916, Winston Churchill left government and returned to the military ranks as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. During the first half of 1916, he led this group in the trenches of Flanders in the so-called Ypres Salient. The battalion was not involved in any major offensives during that period, but the constant artillery shelling resulted in many casualties.Peter Apps has written an absorbing account of Churchill's activities during his time in the trenches. It was a time when he threw himself into the day-to-day leadership of an infantry battalion in the frontline trenches, while pondering the bigger issues of how the war was being conducted, and wondering how and when he could return to British political life. Many of his thoughts are recorded in his letters to his wife Clementine and to his many associates.Kudos to the author for this brief but very engaging look at one of the lesser publicized periods of Churchill's life. My only suggestion for improving the book would be a closer proofreading to eliminate a few grammar and punctuation errors.I borrowed the book for free with my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

I saw him from a good distance away, walking down the highway in the direction I was driving shortly after a big cloverleaf marking the intersection of two major highways. He hardly looked like an experienced hitchhiker, but that was exactly what he seemed to be doing. Not only was hitchhiking illegal on a highway like this, but I also couldn't remember the last time I'd seen a hitchhiker on the roads at all. And I especially couldn't remember seeing one as ill equipped for hitchhiking as this one was. I couldn't tell how old he was, but he certainly looked young—barely out of high school, certainly. Not more than nineteen. He had the usual backpack, which was hanging from one of his hands, but he was shirtless, a white T-shirt hanging over his shoulder, and had on low-slung cut-off jeans. I wanted to help ahitchhiker and he wanted to repay it but had no money

Best Ebook Talking New Orleans Music: Crescent City Musicians Talk about Their Lives, Their Music, and Their City (American Made Music Series), by Burt Feintuch

In New Orleans, music screams. It honks. It blats. It wails. It purrs. It messes with time. It messes with pitch. It messes with your feet. It messes with your head. One musician leads to another; traditions overlap, intertwine, nourish each other; and everyone seems to know everyone else. From traditional jazz through rhythm and blues and rock ’n’ roll to sissy bounce, in second-line parades, from the streets to clubs and festivals, the music seems unending.

In Talking New Orleans Music, author Burt Feintuch has pursued a decades-long fascination with the music of this singular city. Thinking about the devastation―not only material but also cultural―caused by the levees breaking in 2005, he began a series of conversations with master New Orleans musicians, talking about their lives, the cultural contexts of their music, their experiences during and after Katrina, and their city. Photographer Gary Samson joined him, adding a compelling visual dimension to the book.

Here you will find intimate and revealing interviews with eleven of the city’s most celebrated musicians and culture-bearers―Soul Queen Irma Thomas, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Charmaine Neville, John Boutté, Dr. Michael White, Deacon John Moore, Cajun bandleader Bruce Daigrepont, Zion Harmonizer Brazella Briscoe, producer Scott Billington, as well as Christie Jourdain and Janine Waters of the Original Pinettes, New Orleans’s only all-woman brass band. Feintuch’s interviews and Samson’s sixty-five color photographs create a powerful portrait of an American place like no other and its worlds of music.

Review

“Talking New Orleans Music is a compelling compendium of oral history interviews by Burt Feintuch with a cross-section of iconic New Orleans musicians (and a record producer), duly enhanced by Gary Samson’s glorious color photographs. The value of this volume inheres in the respect given by the authors to the diverse personalities and accomplishments of the respective informants―their storytelling is richly informative and entertaining and goes to the heart of what makes New Orleans culture so vibrant and tenacious.”

―Bruce Boyd Raeburn, author of New Orleans Style and the Writing of American Jazz History

“Talking New Orleans Music is a beautiful portrait of the Crescent City’s musical heritage. Burt Feintuch’s interviews and Gary Samson’s photographs graphically show how New Orleans music ‘starts in the street.’ Charmaine Neville, Walter ‘Wolfman’ Washington, Irma Thomas, and eight others speak eloquently about their lives and make this book essential reading for all who love New Orleans.”

―William Ferris, author of Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues

Folklorist Burt Feintuch conducts in-depth interviews with ten noteworthy New Orleans musicians and Grammy-winning record producer Scott Billington to bring readers a full report on the state of jazz, blues, and gospel music in the post-Katrina city. Photographer Gary Samson's colorful images focus not only on the interview subjects, but also on the residents, fans, clubs, and customs of the city's remarkable music scene. The musicians share their stories, including their experiences during Katrina, in a readable and well-organized format. Musicians include Charmaine Neville of the talented Neville family; blues singer/guitarist Walter "Wolfman" Washington, who sparked the author's interest in NOLA music; Irma Thomas, "The Soul Queen of New Orleans"; gospel singer Brazella Briscoe of the historic Zion Harmonizers; and Christie Jourdain and Janine Waters of the all-female Original Pinettes Brass Band. The author's introductions to each section provide context, historical background, and humor.

The drawings are incredible, as in all children's books. Adults will not be disappointed with this one, and children will be pleased to hear the exciting stories within. A MUST have for Norse mythology book collectors. An oldie but GOODIE! Classic and captivating. What else can I say? . . . I'm buying another one incase I lose my present copy-THAT IS HOW GOOD IT IS! I also reccomend My Viking Book by Ruth Harshaw. Hard to find and quite old, but it is THE best children's book EVER! Don't miss either of them.

86 of 91 people found the following review helpful. Buyer Beware !!!!!! By einar Buyer beware ! This Alladin Publication is the same as the Dover Publication Nordic Gods and Heroes. However, it is lacking much of the original artwork, especially that which introduces each of the four parts. The first 3 parts are Norse mythology and the 4th is the Teutonic Ring of the Nibelungs. This book was written for children and young adults and gives only a bare bones telling of the myths. Be prepared for some archaic language : "dost", "spake", "knowst", etc.Why Amazon chooses to sell these two books as a pair is beyond me as they are essentially identical. I recommend the Dover edition because of the extra artwork.

High school senior Hanna Loch just suffered a blackout in front of her entire homeroom class. She hasn’t had one in over ten years, and she’s terrified—the last time she blacked out, she woke up with no memory of her life before. To make matters worse, no one can explain why it happens. For Hanna, bad things tend to come in threes. And that doesn’t even begin to cover it . . . When she learns she could be a descendant of someone who lived /once upon a time/, Hanna must put her trust in William Vann, a descendant of one of the most hated villains ever known. Their histories are intertwined in more ways than she expected, and he has answers about her past, answers even her family won’t share. But is it safe to put her trust in someone who appears to be danger reincarnate, while trying to escape the darkness that tried to kill her ten years ago? A loose fairytale retelling, GOLDEN is a story that’s /just right/, weaving together lost secrets, vengeful enemies, and what happens when fiction becomes reality.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Debut By Rachel @ The Rest Is Still Unwritten Golden is a highly entertaining debut novel by Melinda Michaels that is sure to please fairy-tale buffs whilst still managing to feature its own unique and worthy storyline that you won’t necessarily want to end. Golden follows Hanna Loch, a normal teenager who has been experiencing nasty blackouts for some time now and who strangely has no memories of her life before she was eight years old. With no one around her willing to explain her lack of memories, Hanna has reluctantly let things go, but her frustration reaches breaking point when she meets William Vann, an alluring young man who everyone warns Hanna away from and who has ties to Hanna’s past she never could have imagined…….It’s very hard to describe the storyline within Golden without giving away too many of its secrets. In a way it’s a bit Once Upon A Time meets your general YA novel, but I enjoyed how Michaels hinted at various fairy tales without going into too, much depth during the novel. The idea of who Hanna is was interesting, but it wasn’t explored too much to be over baring. Like with Once Upon A Time, I would very much like to explore some of the other characters and their histories as well, but at this point I don’t know what Melinda Michael’s plans are to revisit Hanna and her world. Hanna was genuinely likable and I liked she had some fire in her. The relationships she had with those around her were strong and I loved how she reacted to situations she found herself in; it was believable, but still encouraging. Obviously Hanna’s relationship with William Vann is something readers will expect, but that doesn’t subtract from actually seeing them fall for one another. There’s an undeniable attraction there, possibly made stronger by all the people who warn Hanna away, but I honestly thought Hanna and William were a great couple and not only did I enjoy seeing them interact, but I felt their chemistry. There were a couple of chapters told through William’s POV in Golden and I thought it was excellent they were included. While Hanna was still the one we predominantly followed, seeing through William’s eyes on occasion allowed me to understand what he was thinking and better understand some of his motivations and feelings. Wonderfully detailed, and nicely paced, Golden does enough in the opening chapters to capture your attention and keep it all the way through. Though I’m sorry to leave Hanna and William, Melinda Michaels ends the story perfectly, and I can only hope to get to follow some of the characters once more on day…..

By Katie Cody Reality and fantasy collide in this romantic adventure! As an avid fan of fairy tale retellings, I was extremely excited to read Golden and I was not disappointed. The story is set in our world with everyday people. However, there was magic at work, messing with people's lives. One of the things I really liked about this book was that it used the original tales instead of the watered down versions that were told over time. It helped to keep with the original lessons as well as introducing a few of its own. The thing I like most about fairy tales is how they are timeless and even retellings have a few words of wisdom within their pages. The theme throughout this book was that everything wasn't always so black and white. There was no clear line dividing the villains and the heroes. It also gave a bit of mystery to the story. I love guessing who everyone was and figuring out right alongside Hanna, exactly who the real villains were.Hanna is a down to earth girl who likes to read fairytales, but doesn't necessarily believe in them. I really liked her level headed nature and the way she always tried to take care of others. She didn't whine bout her misfortunes and instead spent her time trying to find solutions. She also has a bit of sass to her which she lived using in William.William was an interesting character to et to know as well. He was complex and a little naughty at times, but he had a good heart. One of my favorite aspects about this character was that even hitch he worried about Hanna m, he never once tried to co trip her. He respected her decisions and saw her as the intelligent woman she was, instead of a little girl that needs o be protected from everything. The idea for his story was really original and I liked how she weaves in all of the different fairytale chapters and gave them more complex personalities. I am really hoping this will continue in into a series, as there are still a lot of characters with stories I would like to get to hear more of. Owen, especially, I would love o ear how his story ends.If your looking for happily ever after with a twist, check out Golden!

I'm so very glad to have stumbled upon a giveaway for this one and been lucky enough to win myself a copy. It's one that is just plain fun all around. This book has brilliant characters that are written in such a clear and pronounced way, they seem to just come to life more and more with every word you read. There is a lot of character building, especially in the first part of the book, so that as the storyline unfolds, it's very easy to keep track of who descends from what fairy tale family. That's right! There are fairy tale families in this book! I won't tell you which ones or what they are doing in the whole scheme of things because I don't want to give a single thing away, but I will tell you it's pretty amazing and the book is terrific!I really enjoyed reading Golden and am looking forward to reading any and all books in this series that the author writes. This is such a unique story I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the second one!

Review “Rich in food for thought--and action--for researchers, educators, and policymakers interested in understanding and supporting children’s early language and literacy development.” (Margaret G. McKeown, Ph.D.)

About the Author

Andrea DeBruin-Parecki is nationally recognized for her work in the field of family literacy. She developed the Adult–Child Interactive Reading Inventory (ACIRI), a reliable and valid tool that measures the interactive reading skills of an adult and a child during storybook reading (available from Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co.). She has designed family literacy programs and has acted as a consultant across the country. In addition to the ACIRI, she created the Early Literacy Skills Assessment, a comprehensive, reliable, and valid tool in the form of a children's storybook that measures phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, comprehension, and concepts about print. She has expertise in the areas of emergent literacy, assessment, literacy within at-risk and minority populations, and the motivation of at-risk populations. She was a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Guatemala. Her work related to literacy development in young children and families has been published and presented at national, regional, and state conferences.

Dr. van Kleeck's research focuses on language and emerging literacy skills in children who are language impaired as well as the broader group of children who are at risk academically. Some specific areas of interests include (a) parents’ language socialization processes in the home that provide their young children with foundations for later literacy and academic success, and (b) issues related to language assessment in the preschool population. Her most recent work focuses on what she refers to as the academic talk register in preschoolers, and it’s importance to later academic achievement. Dr. van Kleeck’s previous publications include several edited books, nearly 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, and 25 book chapters. She has given several hundred invited and peer-reviewed presentations nationally and internationally.

Dr. Gear teaches special education core courses: educational and diagnostic assessment, instructional methods, individual education programming, directed field experience, collaboration, and transitions. Before teaching at ODU, she taught diverse learners in grades PreK-12th, general and special education in public school, treatment programs, home-based instruction, as well as adult basic education. She has authored and co-authored book chapters and articles; presented at international, national, and regional conferences; is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, including special interest divisions, and a member of the National Head Start Association. She is a reviewer for the National Head Start Association Dialog. She is a contributing author and researcher for the Virginia Early Childhood Policy Center, and the Teacher Immersion Residency Program at ODU. Her research goals include teacher and parent education to improve outcomes for children with disabilities.

Susan B. Neuman, Ed.D., is a professor in educational studies specializing in early literacy development. Previously, she directed the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement. Her research and teaching interests include early childhood policy, curriculum, and early reading instruction from prekindergarten to Grade 3. In her role as Assistant Secretary, she established the Reading First program and the Early Reading First program and was responsible for the implementation of all activities in Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Act.

Dr. Barrueco is Assistant Professor of Psychology and Fellow of the Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies at The Catholic University of America. Dr. Barrueco specializes in the prevention and early intervention of developmental difficulties, particularly among language-minority, immigrant, and migrant children. Much of her grant-funded research has focused on early bilingual, socioemotional, and acculturative processes within the Latino community.

Throughout her training and career, Dr. Barrueco has been dedicated to learning and utilizing advanced statistics to advance scientific knowledge and practice with young immigrant children and families. This approach is rooted in a community-based participatory research framework involving strong collaborations with families and the local and national programs that serve them. This is reflected in her involvement in local and national studies with Head Start, Early Head Start, and Migrant and Seasonal Head Start as well as her appointments as Board Vice Chair of the DC Bilingual Public Charter School and on the Advisory Committee of the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Immigration.

Michael Coyne is a professor of special education in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. He is also a research scientist at the Center for Behavioral Education and Research. After 5 years of experience teaching in elementary schools in the Philadelphia area, David K. Dickinson, Ed.D., attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education and then served as Director of Teacher Education at the Child Study Department at Tufts University and joined the Education Department at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he received tenure. He moved to the Education Development Center (EDC) in 1994 to join the team that developed the Early Childhood Generalist certificate for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. In 1995 he established the New England Research Center on Head Start Quality, which examined the impact of Head Start on children's language and literacy development and on families, with special attention to the development of children whose first language is Spanish. He and Catherine Snow received the initial funding that launched the Home-School Study of Language and Literacy Development in 1987, and he directed the school portion of the study during the preschool years. Drawing on early results from this study, he and colleagues at EDC developed the Literacy Environment Enrichment Project, an approach to helping preschool teachers and their supervisors adopt more effective practices to support children's language and literacy. He and others at EDC are developing and researching a version of this program that will be delivered using the Internet in combination with interactive television. His work has been published in numerous articles, and he has edited two other books, Bridges to Literacy: Children, Families and Schools (Blackwell, 1994) and Handbook of Early Literacy Research (co-edited with Susan Neuman, Guilford Press, 2001). Keegan Crenshaw needs a hero. She's a straight-A student from a famous Oklahoma family and the youngest-ever editor of her college newspaper. She's got a lot to prove. But she's got enemies. Someone's out to get her. Someone's got her running scared. And she runs right into the arms of a boy named Blue. Deep down, Blue is still the brave soldier who risked his life for others in Afghanistan. He's still a hero, even if he no longer believes it. All he wants now, though, is to make music and bury the secret that could destroy his future. Blue tries hard to be a good guy. But he's wrestling with demons he can barely control. And when Keegan moves into his house and very quickly into his heart, his hard-fought control begins to slip away. Keegan and Blue can't stay away from each other, can't stop thinking about each other. They have a connection--body, mind and soul--they cannot resist. But it will cost them dearly. Secrets have a way of exploding into the light. Sometimes it's hard to know who's a hero and who'll turn out to be a heartbreaker. Is Blue the love of Keegan's life, her knight in shining armor? Or will he become an agonizing mistake? Searing and sexy, Tangled Up in Blue explores the consequences of deception, the meaning of courage and the redeeming value of sacrificial love. It contains strong language and adult situations. Book 2, Shelter from the Storm, continues and concludes the story of Keegan and Blue. Tangled Up in Blue (Ikana College Book 1), by J.D. Brick

From the Author Tangled Up in Blue is Book One in the contemporary romance series, Ikana College. The series is set in an Oklahoma college town and revolves around a group of students from wildly different backgrounds who find themselves living together in a ramshackle party house known as the Canadian Embassy. All of them have to wrestle with the real-life consequences of not only their own actions, but also those of the imperfect adults around them. Lots of love, lust and drama ensues, accompanied by some damn good music. Book Two, Shelter from the Storm, continues the epic love story of Keegan and Blue, and introduces additional colorful characters with problems and passions of their own.

From the Back Cover Tangled Up in Blue and Shelter from the Storm are the first two books in the Ikana College series written by author JD Brick. Together, the books tell the tale of an epic love story that plays out on a college campus, over the wind-swept prairie of a vast Oklahoma ranch and on a blood-soaked battlefield in Afghanistan. It's searing and sexy, heart-wrenching and electrifying. As one reviewer put it, "this story is so beautifully written, so heartwarming, so intriguing, I just couldn't put it down."

About the Author I'm crazy for sweeping, ugly-cry tales of true love that are full of heat and heartbreak. So that's what I read, and that's what I try to write. I live in Florida, which is paradise about half the year and a hot mess the rest of the time. I've been a journalist, technical writer and intrepid humor columnist, which is the only kind of humor columnist worth being. I'm also a wife, mother, corporate refugee, ever hopeful if seldom successful gardener, and slave to great books and good coffee. Or vice versa.Visit JDBrick.com for more information.

I found it at the wattapp and I started reading it because it was a complete storie without waiting and all. Few chapters after I started it I decide to buy it and have it in my kindle, not only because it was in good price but because this story made me cry and laught, made me feel every single feeling of them, every single thoughts they had. That kind of stories are my favorites and I have to support J.D. and her work for that. She deserves it!So, about the story! It's a love story between two colleges student(of course) which they have personal problems and a past who hunt them. Colleges not my fav subject but....when the story is well written then wtf I will read it anyway! Buck to my comment. Keegan is a nice girl, down to earth but she lives in her own bubble not aware what is going on with the people in her life. ( Don't want to say much more about it and spoil the story). And there is Blue! A man with blue eyes and a lickable body! Of course it would be a man like him...always have! Former military, came back from Afganistan, down to earth guy too, love music and I think he studies music at the university. Don't know exactly. They meet at the Canadian Empassy, a house Blue lives with three other collages and Keegan is the new roommate. The chemistry was instand and things went natural but fast. They definitely look like it meant to be together 4ever but.....So, 4 stars! I realy wanted to put 5 but in the middle of the story I wanted more. So much more! About the personal moments they shared, and to be more open with their feelings. They did but at some point it had to be more honesty. Hope the second book will have that.Thank you J.D for the beautiful story and I can't wait for the next book to come.

At the risk of being accused of bible-bashing I am giving answer number one - from Corinthians 13: 4-8."Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not self-seeking, It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."But there is another answer. It is in a novel by JD Brick called Tangled Up in Blue. In this beautiful and deeply affecting story the star-crossed lovers Keegan and Blue encounter the fates. She is a highly talented career girl and he is a man in a million who carries deadly and heartbreaking war baggage. As the action gathered momentum I began to understand that here was a love story that bore comparison with Jane Eyre, Dr Zhivago and Bonjour Tristesse to name but three. One line written by Blue seemed to me to encapsulate the relationship between these two unforgettable characters: "I could taste tears, but I didn't know if they were mine or hers."

I can't wait for the next one to come out.My heart aches for Keegan and Blue. I hope that all the frustration I feel for them fuels Keegan on to get her pay back on them all.
