High school senior Hanna Loch just suffered a blackout in front of her entire homeroom class. She hasn’t had one in over ten years, and she’s terrified—the last time she blacked out, she woke up with no memory of her life before. To make matters worse, no one can explain why it happens. For Hanna, bad things tend to come in threes. And that doesn’t even begin to cover it . . . When she learns she could be a descendant of someone who lived /once upon a time/, Hanna must put her trust in William Vann, a descendant of one of the most hated villains ever known. Their histories are intertwined in more ways than she expected, and he has answers about her past, answers even her family won’t share. But is it safe to put her trust in someone who appears to be danger reincarnate, while trying to escape the darkness that tried to kill her ten years ago? A loose fairytale retelling, GOLDEN is a story that’s /just right/, weaving together lost secrets, vengeful enemies, and what happens when fiction becomes reality.

Great Debut By Rachel @ The Rest Is Still Unwritten Golden is a highly entertaining debut novel by Melinda Michaels that is sure to please fairy-tale buffs whilst still managing to feature its own unique and worthy storyline that you won’t necessarily want to end. Golden follows Hanna Loch, a normal teenager who has been experiencing nasty blackouts for some time now and who strangely has no memories of her life before she was eight years old. With no one around her willing to explain her lack of memories, Hanna has reluctantly let things go, but her frustration reaches breaking point when she meets William Vann, an alluring young man who everyone warns Hanna away from and who has ties to Hanna’s past she never could have imagined…….It’s very hard to describe the storyline within Golden without giving away too many of its secrets. In a way it’s a bit Once Upon A Time meets your general YA novel, but I enjoyed how Michaels hinted at various fairy tales without going into too, much depth during the novel. The idea of who Hanna is was interesting, but it wasn’t explored too much to be over baring. Like with Once Upon A Time, I would very much like to explore some of the other characters and their histories as well, but at this point I don’t know what Melinda Michael’s plans are to revisit Hanna and her world. Hanna was genuinely likable and I liked she had some fire in her. The relationships she had with those around her were strong and I loved how she reacted to situations she found herself in; it was believable, but still encouraging. Obviously Hanna’s relationship with William Vann is something readers will expect, but that doesn’t subtract from actually seeing them fall for one another. There’s an undeniable attraction there, possibly made stronger by all the people who warn Hanna away, but I honestly thought Hanna and William were a great couple and not only did I enjoy seeing them interact, but I felt their chemistry. There were a couple of chapters told through William’s POV in Golden and I thought it was excellent they were included. While Hanna was still the one we predominantly followed, seeing through William’s eyes on occasion allowed me to understand what he was thinking and better understand some of his motivations and feelings. Wonderfully detailed, and nicely paced, Golden does enough in the opening chapters to capture your attention and keep it all the way through. Though I’m sorry to leave Hanna and William, Melinda Michaels ends the story perfectly, and I can only hope to get to follow some of the characters once more on day…..

By Katie Cody Reality and fantasy collide in this romantic adventure! As an avid fan of fairy tale retellings, I was extremely excited to read Golden and I was not disappointed. The story is set in our world with everyday people. However, there was magic at work, messing with people's lives. One of the things I really liked about this book was that it used the original tales instead of the watered down versions that were told over time. It helped to keep with the original lessons as well as introducing a few of its own. The thing I like most about fairy tales is how they are timeless and even retellings have a few words of wisdom within their pages. The theme throughout this book was that everything wasn't always so black and white. There was no clear line dividing the villains and the heroes. It also gave a bit of mystery to the story. I love guessing who everyone was and figuring out right alongside Hanna, exactly who the real villains were.Hanna is a down to earth girl who likes to read fairytales, but doesn't necessarily believe in them. I really liked her level headed nature and the way she always tried to take care of others. She didn't whine bout her misfortunes and instead spent her time trying to find solutions. She also has a bit of sass to her which she lived using in William.William was an interesting character to et to know as well. He was complex and a little naughty at times, but he had a good heart. One of my favorite aspects about this character was that even hitch he worried about Hanna m, he never once tried to co trip her. He respected her decisions and saw her as the intelligent woman she was, instead of a little girl that needs o be protected from everything. The idea for his story was really original and I liked how she weaves in all of the different fairytale chapters and gave them more complex personalities. I am really hoping this will continue in into a series, as there are still a lot of characters with stories I would like to get to hear more of. Owen, especially, I would love o ear how his story ends.If your looking for happily ever after with a twist, check out Golden!

I'm so very glad to have stumbled upon a giveaway for this one and been lucky enough to win myself a copy. It's one that is just plain fun all around. This book has brilliant characters that are written in such a clear and pronounced way, they seem to just come to life more and more with every word you read. There is a lot of character building, especially in the first part of the book, so that as the storyline unfolds, it's very easy to keep track of who descends from what fairy tale family. That's right! There are fairy tale families in this book! I won't tell you which ones or what they are doing in the whole scheme of things because I don't want to give a single thing away, but I will tell you it's pretty amazing and the book is terrific!I really enjoyed reading Golden and am looking forward to reading any and all books in this series that the author writes. This is such a unique story I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the second one!
