By James Minter One of many great things to come from the spread of the Internet is the ease of collaborating and sharing. This book by an established children’s author and illustrator Susan Day working collaboratively with Jenny Graham, educationalist and experienced primary school teacher, is a great example.The creativity of Susan directed and focused by the educational expertise of Jenny has produced a valuable set of resources – over fifty exercises – for teachers to help tackle the very real and worrying trend amongst young children – the rise of depression and anxiety. The aim of the book is to give children the skills needed to develop confidence and resilience so they can deal with the everyday issues confronting them in this fast paced, complex, exciting world full of opportunities, contradictions and dangers as they navigate their way to becoming responsible functioning adults.The book is an excellent idea and a much needed addition to any teacher’s arsenal. Anchored in the Australian education system and national curriculum, hard pressed primary school teachers will welcome this book, and Susan has a very laudable goal to give every school a copy.For those outside Australia, the issues of child depressions and increased anxiety are the same and the book is in line with other national curricula so useful for all teachers. I wish them both every good luck in their endeavours.
