The Battle of the Atlantic, the longest single engagement of the Second World War, resulted in the coming-of-age of the Royal Canadian Navy. By 1945, the Canadian Navy had transformed from a small force of a mere 3,500 personnel and 13 vessels, into the third-largest naval power in the world, all in order to face the threat of the infamous German U-boats. As these submarines threatened to weaken the Allied war effort by targeting shipping vessels, the Canadian Navy was put to work protecting convoys across the Atlantic and hunting for submarines just off the coast of Atlantic Canada. War at Sea describes the history of this engagement through a detailed catalogue of the technology, weapons, and ships, including frigates, corvettes, and fairmiles, that the Canadian Navy depended on. Author Ken Smith tells the stories of the danger and action faced by the RCN, such as the torpedoed HMCS Levis, the first Canadian warship lost to enemy fire. Smith further recognizes the contribution of Atlantic Canadians, who worked in shipyards targeted by submarine attack, and who alerted police to German spies in their midst. The history of these events is supplemented by first-hand accounts from the veterans who survived these encounters and 25 historical photos.

War At Sea historical & sobering By Hawkeye A few months ago I spent a week traveling the Canadian Maritime Provinces and although interested in 14th Century history came across some WWII naval history and found this book on the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). This very short concise text on Canada's involvement in The Battle of The Atlantic during WWII is very interesting. It states that by 1945 Canada had gone from a navy of 13 ships to the 3rd largest naval power on the planet. The author, Ken Smith, uses first hand accounts from “The Historical Memory Project” to bring real stories to life which provides the reader with a unique view into the goings on in the North Atlantic during The Battle of the Atlantic. The bulk of the text concerns the chapter on RCN Ships lost 1940-1945. Here the naval historical aficionados will obtain historical elements of the 24 ships sunk during that period. The book illuminates death rates of ship wreck crews were extremely high due to the harsh elements and the inability to rescue survivors by rescue vessels due to constant presence of enemy submarines. The book emphasizes the contributions of Canadians, who worked the areas vital to the war effort while under the constant threat from U-boats, sabotage and spies.
