Through the engaging letters, interspersed with historical background, I felt that I was "right there" during the war years, though I was born several years after the war ended. "Writing the War" tells a personal story alongside the reportage of wartime experiences and events. The letters themselves are so literate that I was left wondering how to compare them with our current cryptic electronic forms of communication.As a teenage friend of their daughter, I was frequently in the Kiley home. But also as a teenager, I did not have the capacity to appreciate Charles and Billee Kiley as multi-dimensional persons with an unusual history; I knew them in their parental roles. This book, which illuminates the young lives of Charles and Billee, teaches us to appreciate how people are formed by the particular times in which they grow and mature, and how important it may be to share each other's stories, particularly between generations. The letters also teach us how a relationship is strengthened by communication.

A Masterful Weaving of Macro and Micro By Bill Curry This is a masterful weaving of macro and micro, of a world war and two individuals whose lives are almost ruled by it. "Almost" because in their own little way, they find a one-word sanity -- love -- that gets them through the war and its necessary separation. It is, also, an explication of the underwritten glimpse of life stateside during the war and its toll on the people left behind. I love the songs of World War II (see: Songs That Got Us Through WWII) and what they tell us about the war. This book, primarily a compilation of letters between two people in love and at war, tells us about both. You may want to keep a box of Kleenex handy.

Childs I have to be totally transparent: though my dad served in WWII, I have had very little knowledge about all that it encompassed, both in the theater, and in the personal lives involved in defeating the Nazis and Japs. My wife's mom and dad served also, and a beautiful romance developed...and they came away from the war, married, and my wife was born.This book is VERY special. The almost 800 letters between Charles and his bride-to-be (Billee) were kept by Anne's (Editor) mom....and discovered after Charles died...but the kids discovered them, and thought them very worthy. The letters reveal such historical content, emotion, cultural and social norms of the time, and how a soldier became a reporter for the Stars and Stripes, and eventually the exclusive reporter to Ike, during the surrender-talks. This all emerges thru a distant romance that is so beautiful, and typical of what absence and distance can do to love. The letter-writing also demonstrates how articulate they both are, but especially how skilled and artful Charles is as a reporter and writer. And their joint commitment to making their effort, to help the U.S. and allies win the war.If you have a brain for history, and a heart for love, this book will move you. Take Tom Brokaw's advice, and read this. Trust me, it will be a very "quick" read, it is so engaging. A few tears may follow.....
