A sweet, chaste, heartwarming story By elana reviews Princess Pippa finds herself about to be married off to a Prince she doesn't care for so she requests a tournament instead, where Princes and Lords from kingdoms near and far will compete for her hand. At her 18th birthday party, she picks out the prince she believes looks most likely to be able to win in the tournament against her cruel intended, and sneakily helps him in the tasks of the tournament, also enlisting the help of her good friend, the Master Archer. The prince Pippa has chosen to help turns out to be a very good and kind man, but Pippa soon realizes that she doesn't truly love him, and instead has fallen in love with someone who is below her station and therefore she cannot be with. While battling for love and helping with the difficult and sometimes dangerous tasks of the tournament, Pippa also faces other adventures including some family squabbles and her own kidnapping.This was such a sweet and chaste book. Despite Pippa's somewhat despairing situation, she is a strong heroine. She has a take-charge, better-to-ask-forgiveness-than-permission attitude and works hard to have some say in the outcome of her fate, instead of just leaving it up to her father and the men in her lives. This book was a fast read - just took me a few hours. It had a fast-paced and exciting story line. It's a cute and clean read that girls of any age would enjoy, and I would recommend it for a day when you want a lighthearted, heartwarming story.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Adorable read! By Ashley Very sweet, easy read. Pippa is a spirited young woman and easy to relate to. The simple summary for this tale would be that Pippa is having a large tournament for her hand, hoping that someone will beat out her current fiance' who is unfortunately very possessive and not quite so nice. Out of all of the gentlemen who arrive, she sets her eyes on one very handsome young man, hoping he will be the one to sweep her off her feet. However, in the background, the Master Archer, her archery teacher, seems to be a much more capable young man, certainly more capable than the Prince that Pippa is mad for!The writing is precise, the characters are fleshed out, and the plot is rather simple. This makes for a good, 'feel happy' read on any given afternoon. My only complaint is that it became far too obvious to me how the story would end up...it was a lovely fairy tale ending. If you are looking for a very deep complex romance, complete with angst and a twisty plot, look elsewhere. This is a read that has good feelings all around, but not overly complex. This is not a fault, just a fact! This is a cute romance read, through and through.

Imagine a medieval version of 'The Bachelorette' where the suitors compete for the Princesses hand in marriage through various tournaments involving Scavenger Hunts, Dragon Slaying and Jousting. Sixty nine the 'Rose Ceremony' insert poison, princes, knights, and kidnapping, oh and a random meeting with fairies? There you have it. A cute story I am glad I stuck it out and finished. There are some slight but distracting editing issues. Also many predictable moments but worth the read. I'm also curious if this is a series, where the author will take it. There is such good character development particularly with the princes it would be disappointing not to let us know what became of them.

From the early 1870s until his death in 1902, John Mackay was among the richest men in the world and was without a doubt the wealthiest man to emerge from Nevada’s fabulous Comstock Lode. Author Michael J. Makley explores how, from his beginnings as a poor Irish immigrant, John Mackay developed a strong work ethic that distinguished him for the rest of his life. He came west to seek his fortune in the California Gold Rush and then moved on to Virginia City, Nevada, where he dealt in mining stocks and operated silver mines. After making a fortune in mining, he transferred his energies to banking and communications.  John Mackay offers new insight into the life and achievements of this remarkable man. It also places Mackay in the broader context of his time, an era of robber barons and rampant corruption, rapidly advancing technology, national and international capitalism, and flagrant displays of newfound wealth. Even in this context, he stood out, not only for his contributions to Nevada and mining history, but also for his reputation as an important business leader fighting the consolidation and venality of corporate power in the Gilded Age. His actions freed the Comstock from a financial monopoly, resulting in moderated rates for the milling, timber, shipping, transportation, and water that made mining possible and precipitated the discovery and development of the ore field known as the “Big Bonanza.”   Makley’s book recounts the life and career of one of the most successful men of his age, a capitalist of immense wealth who generously helped those around him and worked diligently in the public interest. This engaging biography will appeal to readers interested in the Comstock Lode and mining in the West during the latter part of the nineteenth century as well as general western history enthusiasts.

It’s unfortunate this book has been forgotten given the powerful writing and its popularity immediately following The Great War, which Andreas Latzko got to witness first hand. Drawing on his experiences, Latzko presents six vignettes of the war from various points of view. There is the shell-shocked officer, traumatized not only by what he’s seen, but about the way society has let it all go on. “Did it surprise you to find out that the war is horrible? The only surprising thing was the going off. To find out that the women are horrible — that was the surprising thing. That they can smile and throw roses, that they can up their men, their children, the boys they have put to bed a thousand times and pulled the covers over a thousand times, and petted and brought up to be men. That was the surprise…Not a single man would have gone off if they [the women] had sworn never to give themselves to a man who has split open other men’s skulls and shot and bayoneted human beings. Not one man I tell you. They had the chance to protect us, but all they care about was being in style —nothing else in the world but just being in style.”  Then there is the Austrian Captain, come out of retirement for the war, leading for the first time a company of men, farmers and peasants, to certain death. His introspective narrative is one of the most gripping pieces you will ever read. “Ever since the beginning of the war he had been preparing himself for this moment without relax. He had brooded over it day and night, had told himself a thousand times that where a higher interest is at stake, the misery of the individual counts for nothing, and a conscientious leader must armor himself with indifference. And now he stood there and observed with terror how all his good resolutions crumbled, and nothing remained in him but and impassioned, boundless pity for these driven home-keepers, who prepared themselves with such quiet resignation…what was there left for them to do when their grand folks, the learned people, their own captain with the three golden stars on his collar, assured them it was their duty and a most praiseworthy thing to shoot Italian bricklayers and engineers and farmers into fragments?” This also follows the battle of wits between him and his subaltern, a twenty-year old lieutenant who is relishing war and who has no qualms about mowing down wounded enemies on the field. “The phrase ‘Oath to the Flag and Commander in Chief’ were the sun and substance of all things…but now he had grown deaf to this fanfaronade of such words and clearly saw the framework on which they were constructed, how was he to keep pace with the young who were a credulous echo of every speech they heard?” The ending of this vignette is especially striking.  The writing is beautiful, emotive, and brutal in its condemnation of war and its senselessness. Both the third and final story discuss the power dynamics in a war; Those who die and those who profit from it. The final three stories are harrowing descriptions of soldiers who’ve been churned up and spit out by war to face grievous wounds, PTSD, and the heartbreak of a world that just goes on without them.  This is a book every world leader should read. Everyone who thinks that there is honor in war and glory in killing should read this book. Because without experiencing war, it’s what we all think.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Harrowing and Realistic, Extremely Moving By Andrew Thomas Horn This is a brutal and honest description of War, set in WWI Austria. The book consists of several different vignettes of various aspects of the war machine, from the trenches to the rearward command. Not just facts, but an deeply emotional investigation into the human cost of battle. The author did a wonderful and horrific job of conveying the fear, anger, injustice and sheer futility of it all.I haven't ever written a review before but felt bound to write something about this amazing piece of writing. Definitely worth reading, FIVE STARS!!!

About the Author Janette K. Klingner, PhD, until her death in 2014, was Professor of Bilingual Special Education at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her principal areas of research were reading comprehension strategy instruction in diverse, inclusive secondary science and social studies classes; professional development that enhances teacher quality in diverse, inclusive classrooms; response to intervention for English language learners (ELLs); and the disproportionate representation of students of color in special education. She authored or coauthored more than 130 articles, books, and book chapters. Dr. Klingner was past president of the Division of Learning Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), Vice President of the International Academy for Research on Learning Disabilities, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Learning Disabilities. She was a recipient of the Early Career Award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the Distinguished Researcher Award from the Special Education Research Special Interest Group of AERA. Sharon Vaughn, PhD, holds the H. E. Hartfelder/Southland Corporation Regents Chair in Human Development at the University of Texas at Austin and is Executive Director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. She has written numerous books and research articles that address the reading and social outcomes of students with learning difficulties, and is currently investigating effective interventions for students with reading difficulties and students who are ELLs. Dr. Vaughn has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Learning Disabilities and coeditor of Learning Disabilities Research and Practice. She has received the Career Research Award from CEC, the Distinguished Researcher Award from the Special Education Research Special Interest Group of AERA, the Career Excellence Award from the University of Texas, and the Albert J. Harris Award from the International Reading Association. Alison Boardman, PhD, is Assistant Research Professor in the School of Education at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she conducts reading intervention research and teaches courses on differentiating instruction for diverse learners. Her research interests include interventions for struggling readers, meeting the needs of diverse learners in general education classrooms, and providing effective professional development and coaching. Dr. Boardman was previously a special education teacher in pull-out and inclusion settings in elementary and middle schools.

According to this story, Persephone just ate the seeds on her own, apparently unaware of the rules of the dead, and Hades decides to allow her to go up to the surface (which was something I actually liked) The story could have been fleshed out more to befit the lovely illustrations. Also, this book was rather expensive (especially for a paperback!) so I was disappointed when I read it, since I honestly had been expecting more.

Great Book By Nick Baker Not only has this book clarified the concept of heutagogy in a way I understand but has allowed me to experience it through clear and detailed examples from a wide range of views and journeys. I can see why many of my lecturers at uni are employing these concepts indirectly and directly in the English and education papers at the uni I'm in and it has also reinforced my own confidence in creating my own projects in teaching using heutalogical principles. Highly recommended...

About the Author Tina H. Boogren, PhD, is a former classroom teacher, English department chair, teacher mentor, instructional coach, professional developer, and athletic coach. She has presented at the school, district, state, and national levels and has been a featured speaker at the International Reading Association Annual Conference and Barnes & Noble Educator Nights. Dr. Boogren was a 2007 finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year and received the Douglas County School District Outstanding Teacher Award seven years in a row. In addition to writing articles for the National Writing Project's The Voice and The Quarterly, she is author of In the First Few Years: Reflections of a Beginning Teacher. She is a contributing author to Richard Kellough's Middle School Teaching: A Guide to Methods and Resources and Robert J. Marzano's Becoming a Reflective Teacher. Dr. Boogren holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa, a master's degree with an administrative endorsement from the University of Colorado Denver, and a doctorate from the University of Denver in educational administration and policy studies.

About the Author

I’m a music teacher and my pupils as well as my own children inspire me to write songs that are just so much fun that they don’t even notice that they’re learning all kinds of things.  Also, my words inspire my music; and my music in turn inspires the words.

I am a storyteller; I use the spoken word. I love to give tales and music to children, to amuse and excite them, and encourage them to be creative. I have over the years written poems for friends and to celebrate special occasions, but writing lyrics for children is a new venture for me. These are the best presents I could possibly give to my grandchildren, and to the children and grandchildren of friends, and to the children in the primary school where I work as a volunteer.

I love language; I delight in working and playing with it as a storyteller in English and Dutch.   I’m fascinated by the ins and outs of translating, revising, and rephrasing in ways that please the imagination and do justice to the story or image at hand.  It’s a daily challenge and a great joy to me to find words for images and ideas.  I find cherishing and expressing imagination an inestimably beautiful and worthy endeavour.  I’m playing at it all the time, even when I’m doing something else.
