Afghanistan1971. The rugged routes to Kabul teemed with worldwide youth in search of cheap drugs and enlightenment. With the idyllic dreamers came hard core criminals. Sent to Kabul to take on the criminals was Federal Narcotics Agent, Terrence Burke. Working undercover, often without backup, Burke dismantled smuggling operations in Afghanistan and India. He used “renditions” to return fugitives like Timothy Leary from Afghanistan to the U.S. and teamed with the Soviet KGB to close a drug route through the USSR. He challenged criminals in the Royal Palace and the Afghan Police. The issues he portrays in Afghanistan are still confronting us today.

If you are a history/political nut like I am then this is a book for you. Terrence Burke is the "Real Deal" and tells tales that you won't ever see unless you have top secret security clearance. If you have a historical or political interest in this period and how the U.S. was involved you need to read this. I was lucky enough to get an early copy recently and I enjoyed every page of the book. Real guy, real events, real story. Don't miss it! I suspect a movie is on the way.

Homan-Jones Great collection of tales from a 'Nark' in Afghanistan before the coup. Highlights for me included Tons of Pornographic Playing cards being traded for vans stuffed with Hash, cops paid so poorly they couldn't be issued guns (they would sell them to the criminals they were supposed to arrest), Timothy Leary's rendition from Kabul to CA, cracking down on The BEL 'Hippie Mafia,' and just the amazing levels of corruption at all levels of government- from the Presidential Palace all the way down to the beat cops. Highly entertaining read, I look forward to reading his other book about Laos.

Vallas In all my years in the Foreign Service, I have never known a person given more responsibility to act independently in accepting or proposing assignments in very dangerous situations in pursuit of drug trade. In that part of the world, it is extremely difficult and dangerous to trust contacts that often have interest contrary to our country’s goals. It was Terry’s responsibility to assess his contacts and evaluate the information provided. He did this with extraordinary efficiency. It goes without saying, that I also commend Irene for enduring such extreme hardship posts. It is truly a shame that Terry’s efforts are mostly for naught as Afghanistan has not only not changed, but become worst and remains a major source of drugs shipped to the US. .
