A retired general has hired them to find his missing nineteen-year-old son, who appears to be involved with a new drug. Shotweed increases the male orgasm many times, in both duration and intensity, and is on the rise in the local gay community. It is highly addictive and may be fatal, and it only works on gay men. The author's references to both pop and classic culture add to the narrator's dry wit throughout the story. The narrator is, indeed, legendary Irish hero Finn M'Coul, who is working for a giant ghoul named Viledark. Finn does the legwork while Viledark remains inside, feeding his appetite for flesh and playing in his cat room.Their current job is to locate a missing young man who has become a victim of an insidious internet-drug cabal. The new drug is shotweed, which enhances sexual encounters and ensnares victims in deadly addiction. The main villain is an arrogant supernatural being named Sin, and he's using the shotweed ring to trap Viledark. Sin has all kinds of fantastic beings in his arsenal, and public carnage happens everywhere from shopping malls to teashops.Finn gets help from two loveable drag queens, Thalia Poe and Sasha. He also has a crew of Fenians to back him up.The finale between Sin and Finn' s boss is a satisfying "consummation devoutly to be wished," to coin a phrase. The denouement leaves us a hope for a second installment. I'll be looking for more!

By Roy Griffis Mr. Smythers' most seductive creative gift is that of creating worlds that no matter how unusual ("Panthers") or how seemingly familiar ("Sin") that feel incredibly real and vivid. He does this not by burying us under details that take away from the story, but with casual asides from the characters that hint at entire aspects of that fictive world, which give it the solidness of a land that we've not yet visited but which we have heard tell exists. It's a subtle skill, exercised by a confident, talented author, and it only makes his fantasies richer. "Death by Sin" is a very original genre piece; a love child born of Chandler and Lovecraft, as narrated by a supernatural and somewhat more badass Noel Coward. You probably haven't read anything like it, and any lover of urban fantasy should check it out.

By Angel Hatfield **I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest reviewThis story is about Finn M'Coul, a modern-day version of an Irish mythological hero, and his detective agency. He's assigned a job to find a 19yr old son of a military character while a new drug that only works on gay men is running rampant in the community. While some of the plot sounded kind of iffy, I love a good mystery so I thought it was worth a try and I was curious as to how the author would create something targeting such a specific population. The book started off decent enough, but the more I got into the book, the less I like the main character. Once I got to the point of what triggers the drug on the person, I had to stop reading. I found it ridiculous. I just couldn't get into the book after that.
