This book uses imagination and wonder to tell the exciting story of an angry volcano who learned from a wise bird how to handle its anger and live a happy life after all. The illustrations are amazing and colorful and the story is wonderful. My son really enjoyed it and learned a lesson too. This is a book we will read together time and time again. It is absolutely a great way to show our children how to deal with anger and ways to control difficult emotions. It gives some very useful advice on what to do if you are feeling angry. I highly recommend this book for all children to read.

From the Author While I was writing Expressly Yours, Samantha, I was struck by the harsh treatment the horses received, all for the sake of getting the mail through in a hurry. It was difficult for me to write about the mistreatment of any animal, but I thought it was a vital part of the story. I am proud to announce that I will be giving a percentage of my earnings from this book to the Last Chance Corral in Athens, Ohio. And while I'm not allowed to provide a link to the charity from this page, I encourage you to learn more about them online.

By Amy J Expressly Yours, Samantha is book seven in the Cotillion Ball series by Becky Lower and it is a great addition to this continuing family saga. This time we get to spend time with Valerian, the youngest Fitzpatrick son who bucks tradition. Instead of working in the family banking business like his father and two older brothers, Val’s love is horses. He spends the summer in St Louis on his brother-in-law’s horse farm and when time comes to go back to New York City, he signs up for the pony express. And the story blossoms from there. This book pays great homage to that part of American history by describing how the pony express was set up and how it was run. But it’s done in a fascinating way by letting the reader experience it through Val.Samantha Hughes is the wonderfully feisty heroine who escapes an evil uncle by cutting her hair and posing as a boy. Through Val’s help, she is pulled into the pony express family as a stable boy. What I love about Sam is that she is as tough as the other boys she works with. And as she falls in love with Valerian, even though she knows she can’t tell him the truth, the tension increases. This is a great western story of a young couple who you can’t help but root for. From its clever title, to its broad sweeping western theme, to its sweet love story, Expressly Yours, Samantha does not disappoint.

Her characters are like old friends, her settings jump out of the page and surround you, and she is meticulous with her historical facts. If you want to know what it was like to live in 1860s America, to ride the horses, taste the food and experience the life of a Pony Express rider (through the eyes of a young woman desperate to hide her identity), you need to read Expressly Yours, Samantha. At a time when the law sided with men, and Samantha needs to escape the clutches of a truly wicked uncle, we join her on a fast-paced journey to freedom and love in the Wild West. If you've read the previous novels in Lower's Cotillion Series, you will be delighted with the appearance of some familiar (and handsome!) characters, but the book also stands all on its own. And what a wonderful world Ms. Lower has created! This book (and the series) is truly not to be missed by fans of historical romance. Highly, highly recommend!

There now that I got that out I can start what I commonly refer to as "The Becky Lower Gush". LOL ;)Expressly Yours, Samantha (seriously love this title Becky) is the 7th book of her historical romance Cotillion Ball Series. When one think of historical romance you expect to be swept some where over in Europe, but not this series. Becky mixes it up by placing the setting in 1860's USA. If you have never heard of The Pony Express well that will change once you devour this read.Samantha Hughes (AKA "Sam") is on the run from her seriously evil uncle. She makes the decision to pose as a man and ride The Pony Express but all positions are filled until she comes across Valerian Fitzpatrick who himself is running in his own way. Val get's her a job working the stables assuming she is a he, and forms a friendship with her. Although Val knows something is off about "Sam", he decides to let "Sam" speak on his own terms about secrets that "he" is hiding. Well fate takes that out of their hands when our twosome endure a gun fight and Samantha is injured. Left with no choice but to search for her wounds, Val discovers a lot more than a gunshot. Suddenly more than a friendship is possible and the attraction is heated. Before they know it though, jerkface uncle reappears and threatens a happy probable future. So much more to this book, but I don't do too many details! ;)Becky you are such a vivid writer. I swear I can see the images you write to paper, taste the food, smell the smells, feel the fear and hurt of gun fighting and hear the hearts that pound with anticipation. You have taken us to a few American cities throughout this series so it was only natural that we were taken to the Wild West. I adore these characters and giggled to myself in anticipation of Val finding out "Sam's" truth. I have to say though, meeting my fave brother and sisters is always the "icing on the cake" in your novels .. it's like coming home! :)This book I suppose could be read as a stand alone .. but why??? Check out this entire series. If you are a true historical romance lover and especially is you like something a little different, then Becky Lower is the author for you!HAPPY READING! :)

The Prison Path: School Practices that Hurt Our Youth takes a unique and unapologetic look into the practices, social norms, construction, and policies within our schools that mirror prisons. From the physical building to the labeling and placement of special education students, schools are reflecting correctional institutions. Beyond the mundane and into the world of social cliques, discipline policies, uniforms, and ethics, this book highlights how similarities between schools and prisons create a hidden and dangerous environment for at-risk students. While many schools and teachers are doing the best they can while facing budget shortfalls, it is the inherent policies, procedures, and normalities that are thought of as being part of the school experience, that may be the most hazardous for at-risk students. Therefore, this book highlights these occurrences and juxtaposes them with similar situations within prisons, providing an eye-opening and daunting look at prisons and schools. This book will cause teachers and those within education to question the practices, policies, and norms that we consider part of the typical school experience. Some additional key features of this book include:

  • Chapter by chapter examination of the similarities in prisons and school
  • Detailed look at the process of special education labeling and its detrimental impact on students
  • Examination of the role of social cliques and gangs in institutions
  • A unique look at the school-to-prison pipeline
  • In-depth questions to ask oneself about to improve schools
  • Dangers of inviting school resources officers into schools and cutting guidance services
  • Real-life scenarios

The Prison Path: School Practices that Hurt Our Youth, by Christen E. Clemson

Review The Prison Path: School Practices that Hurt Our Youth addresses ethical and moral issues associated with incarceration and schooling drawing an interesting and challenging parallel between both social processes. Issues related to loss of freedom, ethics in unequal power relationships, and the importance of learning for one’s self image and potential for a full life are foundational to the text. This is an unusual book with overtones of “Deschooling Society” by Illich (1969) in the way it integrates ethics and learning. This book will be of great interest to readers challenged by modern society’s approach to learning, rehabilitation, recidivism, institutional learning, and the moral life of the marginalized. Christen Clemson challenges preconceived images of prison and school life aims to have readers reflect and rethink their approaches to the morality of institutional life. (Charles Burford, professor of educational leadership, Australian Catholic University)Clemson’s education, knowledge, and insight into the school to prison pipeline has been a passion of hers for over four years. Her chapter, “Space, Place, and the Power of a Box” is extremely timely in today’s society. The correlations she has made between school and prison spaces are extremely powerful and gut wrenching. This book is an eye opening look forward. If we as educators do not begin looking closer at zero tolerance policies and how we are impacting children at such a young age and at an alarming rate we as educators and educational leaders may have a catastrophe in the making on our hands! Clemson has laid the groundwork for a movement toward better understanding and increased awareness. (Jeannette L. Brelsford, PhD)A succinct examination of the long standing history of American education in preparing children first for citizenship and secondly as prisoners when they question the authoritarianism of American schooling. With brilliant and insightful analysis as to the current direction of American education this book a must read for anyone involved in the process. (Joy Meness)

About the Author Christen E. Clemson grew up in a small farming community in Northeast Ohio, where she was involved in her community and excelled in athletics. Athletics then led her to The Pennsylvania State University, where she competed for five years and went on to earn her bachelor’s in Secondary in Education, a master’s in Educational Leadership, and soon she will be finishing her Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

Lara Bailey isn't in Rocky Springs for the hot springs, the resort activities, or the fabulous skiing. She has come to Colorado for one reason and one reason only: to find and get close to Marcus Colter, the eldest Colter brother. Unfortunately, trouble finds her in the form of Tate Colter rather than Marcus. The youngest Colter brother is arrogant, cocky, smart, and tenacious in his attempts to find out why she wants to find Marcus even though she's never met him. Lara isn't willing to divulge that information, and Tate is determined to uncover her motives. It makes Tate one hot, wickedly sexy, adorably dimpled, alpha male pain in her backside.

Lara is really confused when Tate helps her out of a difficult and potentially dangerous situation. It leaves Lara wondering if he really is the cocky, arrogant jerk that he pretends to be, or if there isn't much more to Tate Colter than she'd initially thought.

Tate Colter wants Lara Bailey in his bed...badly. When she completely blows him off and ignores him when they meet, he's even more determined to find out her secrets and get her to submit to the molten desire that radiates between the two of them. The fact that she's one tough female, a woman who can give back exactly what he dishes out, makes her even more intriguing to him.

Sparks fly as Tate and Lara become involved in a battle of wits and wills that will ignite flames of passion and desire like neither one of them have ever experienced. But when deception is discovered and a betrayal takes place, can these two adversaries who are so much alike work together without letting the white-hot passion burning between them incinerate them both?

While this is the seventh book in the series (and I'd strongly recommend you reading them all), it can be read as a stand alone book. Tate is the youngest of the Colter men. He is everything you'd want in an alpha male: handsome, very intelligent, special forces retired with a secret government job now, a volunteer fireman, and determined but kind hearted. The heroine, Lara, is smart, a beautiful long haired blonde, reluctant to get involved in a relationship and when the need is there, she can kick some butt. Lara is posing as a banker on vacation at the Colter ski resort in Rocky Springs, Colorado to get information on one of Tate's oldest brothers, Marcus. As a result, Lara sort of blows Tate off when he shows interest, and like any good alpha male that only makes him want her more. It turns out she is secretly working for the government as well. Tate manages to use his connections to find out more about her and then the danger and suspense part of the book kicks in. In the end Tate uses his strong will to gain the heart of Lara. Super hot sex melts the snow and I guarantee you won't want to put this book down until you know how everything turns out.

By KellieH I have to say that since the first time I met Tate inthe Billionaire series I could not wait for him to get his own story. Next to Travis he was one of my favorites and watching him and the woman that finally grabbed his heart was so much fun. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of the book in exchange for my honest review and I devoured the pages the moment I received it.Laura is anything but the typical guest at the Colorado resort and Tate picks her out of the crowd the moment he sees her. Putting his connections and skills to good use after their first converstaion he figures out who she really is even before she can confess her reason for visiting Colorado. While some family secrets bring them on a bit of a goose chase it is clear they were made for each other from the moment they met.One of the things I liked most about this is that though the two characters were a little afraid of telling the other how they felt even though their actions showed it through out the pages Tate did not run from it or try to deny it which is one more thing I have loved about this series in general. The men not only seemed to know what they wanted but when they found it they were not afraid to hold on to it tight and admit it.This is an amazing addition to the Billioinaire series and if you have loved Tate as much as I have in the other stories you are going to love watching him get his turn at love. You will also enjoy the little bit of payback Travis gets as promised from a prior book. This is a must read if you have liked any of the other books in the series.*I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. It was just okay, simply put. By Melissa K Billionaire Untamed is the seventh book in the Billionaire’s Obsession series and without a doubt can be read as a standalone novel. I personally have read and loved most of the books in the series, with the exception of Billionaire Unmasked, which just didn’t work for me. I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth, but I was still excited to get my hands on Billionaire Untamed because I loved the others in the series so much that I had faith the author could turn it around.Lara Bailey, our heroine, really starts off as a mystery to us, and I loved that I didn’t catch on to her story for part of the book. She is in Rocky Springs to find one of the Colter brothers, Marcus, but she catches the eye of another brother, Tate. Tate knows from the minute he lays eyes on Lara that she will be his; he just has to keep her from slipping away from him. Lara is also drawn to Tate, but she has other plans in place and won’t allow Tate to get in the way.The story is quite simple. Lara is trying to achieve a goal while avoiding tripping over Tate in the process. Both of them have some past issues to work through, but nothing giant really takes away from their romance. They fall in love fast and sweet. I enjoyed the simplicity of it. As always when reading a J.S. Scott book, the smut was top-notch and didn’t reference a single condom [*fist pump*]; neither of them had been with anyone else in quite a while. I don’t know about you, but I love it when it’s been months or even years since either has gotten down and dirty with someone else.So the average grade? Because there just wasn’t anything that wonderfully outstanding about it, especially coming from J.S. Scott. It was just okay, simply put. We do get to meet a bunch of new people who I believe will be in the books to come, and I’m looking forward to them. I even thought that maybe the author put too much effort into having us meet these new faces because a lot of my attention was drawn to them. While this one wasn’t anything to write home about, I loved getting a sweet little J.S. Scott fix to hold me over until I get more. If you’re a fan of the series, this is a must-read, and while I wasn’t over the moon about it, I did enjoy myself. If you’ve never read the series, you should start from the beginning and give it a go. If you’re into over-the-top, sweet alpha males, this will feed that addiction.

Once aware, you are given ideas to help become a more balanced, whole person.Once the foundational concepts were explored, the author turns her literary attentions to what seems to be one of her greatest strengths, the world of education. Her thoughts encourage us to become more aware of the whole self so that we may become a more balanced person. In doing so, we will be better able to serve the children in our classrooms. This in turn will allow those children to become more balanced themselves. I found this to be an extremely valuable concept to apply as we strive to help children grow and develop in today's society. Another valuable facet of this book is a very unique and comprehensive look at various activities that can be used in the classroom. Educator's, whether a first year teacher or a seasoned veteran, can benefit from the ideas presented. In closing, I would highly recommend this book to any person, parent, and/or educator who is striving to find an innovative way to balance their personal and educational lives and the lives of those closest to them.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. descriptive outline of the book inaccurate By W. Cluff I pre-ordered this book from the publisher because I thought it was going to be a new and fresh look at a wellness model specifically through the lens of an education professional. What came was a book which crammed all the wellness model stuff into the first chapter of the book, 21 pages out of a 138 page book. The rest of the chapters deal primarily with classroom management, a rather unbalanced focus for a book about maintaining balance. Angela Schmidt Fishbaugh offers sound management suggestions, creating a pleasant and organized environment, realizing your own attitude effects the classroom, looking at the whole child rather than focusing on just one thing, giving children the tools and practice needed to self-regulate and problem solve independently. However, if you have worked/studied in Early Childhood Education recently none of it will be new insight.

First-Year Teacher's Saving Grace By Lauren Seeking Balance in an Unbalanced World: A Teacher's Journey is an excellent book for those who desire to become teachers or those who are first-year teachers. I would recommend this book to be the center of any Mentor/Mentee Program. Angela Schmidt Fishbaugh does an excellent job explaining how to turn those everyday chaotic aspects of being a teacher into personal lessons in the dimensions of your inner self. Through a positive approach, the author teaches you to seek the good in every situation and in every student...to see and understand the whole person, not just the superficial person. She also gives great tips on classroom techniques to help those first-year teachers grasp the idea of a "whole-listic" classroom.

In autumn 2001, U.S. and NATO troops were deployed to Afghanistan to unseat the Taliban rulers, repressive Islamic fundamentalists who had lent active support to Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda jihadists. The NATO forces defeated and dismantled the Taliban government, scattering its remnants across the country. But despite a more than decade-long attempt to eradicate them, the Taliban endured—regrouping and reestablishing themselves as a significant insurgent movement. Gradually they have regained control of large portions of Afghanistan even as U.S. troops are preparing to depart from the region.   In his authoritative and highly readable account, author Hassan Abbas examines how the Taliban not only survived but adapted to their situation in order to regain power and political advantage. Abbas traces the roots of religious extremism in the area and analyzes the Taliban’s support base within Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas. In addition, he explores the roles that Western policies and military decision making— not to mention corruption and incompetence in Kabul—have played in enabling the Taliban’s resurgence.

A relatively general understanding of the topic at hand By DF I would recommend this book to a person who hasn't invested a serious effort into learning about the war in Afghanistan/Pakistan, the Taliban, Pakistani politics, and a history of pre 9/11 Afghanistan. The reader will walk away with a decent understanding of Afghanistan's recent history, key events, key personalities, fundamental and long term challenges to Afghanistan's stability and progress, he character of the Taliban insurgency, and some drivers of conflict. The proper way to learn history is read multiple books by different authors on the same topics. This book will definitely come off as superficial to people who have invested a serious effort into learning about this war and who have read other publications on the topics. Many people who will likely browse this page will already be familiar with the excellent books "Taliban" by Ahmed Rashid, and Inside Al Qaeda and the Taliban by Saleem Shazad. With regards to the rise of the Taliban during the 90's, the greater scope of international and regional competition in Afghanistan, the history of IGO/NGO aid and relations in the country, this book is not even close to the level of detail, facts, and investigative quality in Ahmed Rashid's book. I very strongly disagree with another reviewer's claim that this book shed light on Al Qaeda's role in shaping Afghanistan's and Pakistan's recent history. There is, at best, a page's worth of information on Al Qaeda, and it is not that much more information than what even the most casual of news followers or readers will have already known. Saleem Shazad's book is an extremely good read on this specific topic, and while Taliban Revival at least discusses some 90's Taliban history relative to Rashid's book, Shazad's book reveals that Abbas doesn't even touch the tip of the iceberg in terms of Al Qaeda's post 9/11 role in Afghanistan/Pakistani history and conflict. I am also aware of the rise of the Taliban from 2006-2009 and the American surge that was meant to regain the initiative and put Afghanistan on a positive trajectory. While Abbas does justice to Stanley McChrystal's historical Initial Commander's Assessment, the reader will not really get an idea of just how bad things got in Afghanistan or just how much of the country the Taliban was able to control or influence. In terms of the gains made by the surge, the author has a single line that addresses that progress. I feel the author did a great job in discussion Pakistan's conflicts, ceasefires, and increasingly violent trends, but Afghanistan wise in terms of the Taliban's rise and the American surge, arguably the most decisive part of the war, I felt it was lacking tremendously. The book's best chapter is the drivers of conflict chapter, that discusses Afghanistan's greater economic issues and challenges to implementing legitimate and effective governance. This is information that is usually not discussed in more mainstream accounts or narratives in understanding Afghanistan's long term issues. However in terms of security the author makes a fatal flaw by listing spectacular attacks conducted by the Taliban as evidence of their success. In counterinsurgency wars, or history in a greater sense, listing individual tactical events doesn't necessarily translate into a trend at the aggregate level, even if the list appears to be long. In fact, the author has done just what the Taliban would have wanted to him have done. High profile attacks are meant to indicate relevance, but on a strategic level don't mean as much. The primary metric for success in counterinsurgency/insurgency is the degree of control to which a party has over a territory in order to administrate it and the degree to which it can effectively secure the compliance of its constituents within that territory. Just because the Taliban can launch a well coordinated shooting ambush or suicide attack in Kabul doesn't mean they are able to challenge the Afghan government's ability to retain its monopoly on the use of force in Kabul itself 24/7. That particular metric is hard to find in detail, but the overwhelming trend is that ISAF and the GIROA were seizing and consistently administering territory from 2010 onwards, territory that had been lost before as the Taliban were resurgent from 2006-2009.This book also suffers a lot from having many sentences that are in the form of conclusions and declarations. One way to put it is that in many paragraphs in this book there is more "telling" than "showing", something that the more academically and scholarly oriented reader will find repeatedly disappointing.Bottom line, a good book for the generalist or for those who have never read deeply into these topics, but for those with experience with other publications on these topics, it may fill in some gaps in knowledge but won't be the most significant learning experience.

Recent History of Pakistan and Afghanistan Taliban with personal notes By gt surber Review – The Taliban Revival by Hassan Abbas“The Taliban Revival” by Hassan Abbas is a fascinating glimpse into the recent history of both Pakistan and Afghanistan and the resurgence of the Taliban in both countries in the last 3 – 4 years.Mr. Abbas is a native of Pakistan, and while I did not catch his exact birthplace it is some where in the North end of Pakistan where as a young man he served in a local police force. Since then he has joined academia and journalism. This book is a distillation of his personal experiences on both sides of the Durand Line between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Many are the stories he tells of his experiences as a policeman in the area. Many are the stories he tells of his personal experiences in Pakistan. Most revealing is that one of his favorite memories is marching in the protest marches that surrounded Musharraf in 2008. From these we get the feel of the people themselves and the personalities involved. Many are the interviews quoted the Mr Abbas had with individuals of all stripes and power levels, mostly in Pakistan, but a few in Afghanistan. Thus while this is a well documented recent history book, it is in many respects a primary source on the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In his conclusion Mr. Abbas states the reasons he feels that the Taliban have had a resurgence in the last 3 years. He also gives what he feels would be possible solutions to the issues in that area. These are well thought out and detailed. It would be a disservice to Mr. Abbas to quote those without the extensive background he supplies to support them. The text of the book is only 60% of the book with extensive notes and index the remainder 40%.The book reads well. Mr. Abbas's English is impeccable. The arguments are detailed and clear. At times I wish I knew more details to more accurately place his comments into the current course of events and cross check what he states. That is my problem, which I am working to resolve. But I have no reason to doubt his accuracy and fairness.IMHO this is an excellent book detailing recent events in Pakistan and Afghanistan. It would not be ideal for a first time attempt to learn more of the the issues. But for the intermediate or advanced educated person is a good place to learn much more.

A Moutain to Climb By Hande Z The Talibans, Al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, are names we read and hear in news media every day, but what do we really know about them other than the impression that they are Islamic terrorists? Hassan Abbas grew up and was educated in Peshawar. He spent some years as a senior police commander in the hot frontier of Pashtun territory before he turned to the academic life in Washington DC. His book provides a history of the Talibans; a history that connects Britain, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, and the USA. He gave a detailed account of the Taliban's rise in the 1990's, its dispersion after the American 'war on terror' after September 11 in 2001, and how and why the Talibans are coming back. This is an illuminating work that explains which tribe in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border is fighting which - and why they are fighting. It explains the role and reception of Al-Qaeda in the Afghanistan history. He also explains with great clarity the cultural habits and attitudes of the tribal people in that region. Without an understanding of their history and culture it will be difficult to have any effective engagement with the main parties there and hope that peace can result. The problem with understanding Pashtun culture and attitude is that they are full of nuances. Hassan explains these nuances with the insight and experience of having lived there among them. Do we even think that the Talibans do not watch Hollywood movies and how such a seemingly innocuous omission could have serious practical consequences? Hassan retells a story (that now, removed from time and space, seems comic): A Taliban raided a village home searching for their North-Western rivals, saw a poster of Sylvester Stallone in his 'Rambo' gear. He immediately ordered the occupant of the room to 'Tell your cousin that he must surrender his weapon'.It may appear that even the CIA did not know enough about the Pashtuns and the Talibans (not the same) and that might have led to a great deal of wrong decisions being made leading to the American war in Afghanistan as well as decisions made in the war. Perhaps this book was published too late. Perhaps not. Readers hoping for a wider historical context might like to supplement their reading of this book with Peter Tomsen's 'The Wars of Afghanistan', published in 2011.

Here is the first statewide collection of true Florida murders, and, as the saying goes, truth is stranger than fiction. The Sunshine State has played host to a memorable and varied array of crimes of passion, greed, and revenge.

In stories spanning from the 1860s to the 1990s, you will meet such varied characters as Lena Clarke, a killer with both her feet planted in a dozen bewildering worlds; Terry Jo, the Sea Waif; Chief Tigertail; the outlaw Ed Watson; Blue, the Enforcer; President Franklin Roosevelt; the Duke of Windsor; novelist Zora Neale Hurston; Lobster Boy; the Gulf Stream Pirate; Brother Gillette, a gentle Shaker who killed out of compassion; and Pensacola's Black Widow, a Spider Woman who killed without mercy.

It details injustices that occurred in the counties I grew up around such as Columbia, Hamilton, and Suwannee Counties in the mid 20th century. Although I was not around during the times the events in the book depicts, I had heard of some the racial, biased cases as a child. The book provided a good sense of history in those areas during that time, and help me to appreciate how more civil we have become. It also give me hope for a better and harmonious tomorrow if we continue to spread love around.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent history of dark deeds in the Sunshine State By Peter E. McGinn As this and a view other books I have read since I moved to Florida can attest, there have been a lot of sensational crimes here in the Sunshine State. They even managed to send OJ to jail where the great state of California failed, though not for murder, obviously. This book is well written in a true crime reporting style, and from what I can judge, also well researched. The author has written ten books and hundreds of articles about Florida, so I think we can assume he knows of what he writes. A few of these murder cases are famous, but several were unknown to me. Of special interest to me were a couple of cases I have run into previously: the story about the Duke of Windsor (former king of England) and Wallace Simpson (am I allowed to write her name without putting the word "commoner" in front of it?) and their attempt to frame someone for murder. This tale was featured in a series I watched based on the "Dance to the Music of Time" series. And then there was the bombing follow-up to the Sheriff McCall murder that was featured in the book "Devil in the Grove."Many other of the chapters were just as interesting, while a few were much less intriguing to me, but not because of the quality of the writing. The quality of the writing is very consistently high. This is volume 2 of the Florida Chronicles, so I imagine I will have to seek out volume 1 someday, which is apparently about less violent evildoers.

Some like the lobster boy story are bizzare, some like the Moore bombing are tragic. As a native Floridian I wish our transplants would read books like this.

The Sarran's Return is the third book so if you are new to the series start at the beginning, The Sarron Plague, than Living with Syn. The Sarran's are an alien race that have triad relationships. Two bonded male warriors and a fem, or female. There is mm and mmf sex. I have been looking forward to Dr Mark Stern's, now Prince Mark of the Earth Clan, story. He's been my favorite character since the first book. How can you not love a man who chose to go with the Sarran's in an effort to insure that the 4,500 women taken would be safe. That the Sarran's were who they presented themselves to be. That is just wow! I was not disappoint. Mark and Juraneus are a great pairing, they are so a like, but, uniquely different that I easily fell in love with Juraneus as well. I liked their fem Sara. She went through a lot, but was not broken by it, and was open to all Mark and Juraneus had to offer her, and her young son Michael. Of course the cats. Loved the big cat rescue. Though at times the cats dominate the story and it gets to be a bit much and takes away from Mark, Juraneus and Sara's story. Still a great addition to the series. Now I am wondering were the series goes from here. I hope there will be more. There is Mattie, who I felt more pity for than dislike, It had been hinted that she will fall into the hands of the Ipz. There is Sara's father, former Senator Sam Johnson, who has chosen to become a Sarran. Embracing the Codex and ready to find his bonded and fem. Than there is Neffie and Michael, and the generation of Sarran-Earth children that will have stories to tell.

Enough to buy the book even though it is a little expensive for the number of pages. But what I take exception to is when an author's personal views on any subject become jarring to a story. I am a registered Republican and found some parts of the book just a little insulting such as "Even the Republicans don't want to be known as the barbarians of the galaxy". All I'd like to say is you're audience is more than just Democrats and perhaps you should take it easy on the politics. I do enjoy the stories, I like the emotional connections between the both hero and heroine, and I just laugh myself silly at the cats. Keep writing I love what you're doing.

By Linda I really love the Sarrans story line and enjoy the books. The reason for the 4 stars instead of the 5 stars. Are these, writing felt hurried and simple i.e did not seem to flow. the story line as a whole was very good and focused more on the J and Harry, fem seemed secondary instead of a lead character. Finally the book was to short, this author should be able to give us a space opera i.e 250 pages or more and should considering the price of this book. I would not have bought it, if I had not started the series. Refine the writing and polish the wording and Ms Katt is well on here way to become a contender in the Bi-sexual mm, mmf space operea genere that is fast becoming all the rage for romance fans. Lastly the sex was hot but again felt off somehow. Over all a good book though.

Best Ebook The Spymasters: The True Story of Anglo-American Intelligence Operations within Nazi Germany 1939-1945, by Charles Whiting

This is the story of the men who fought the shadow-war - the British Intelligence operations of World War II which took place in Nazi Germany. British and American spymasters fought their battle for Twelveland—the code name for the Third Reich—within National Socialist Germany. These intelligence agents, the "eyes and ears" of their governments, outwitted their enemies, the Abwehr, and finally brought about the surrender of the German army. It goes without saying that a secret service should wish to remain secret; many of the spies of that era went on to hold responsible positions in the post-war world. But Charles Whiting dug deep and persuaded many participants from both sides of the "war in the shadows" to reveal their roles in this extraordinary duel of wits, and unearthed the stories of men who are no longer alive, including: Sidney Cotton, who perfected techniques of aerial photography, a forerunner of the satellite spies that are over our heads right now. William Stephenson, "the quiet Canadian," undefeated heavyweight boxer and founding father of the CIA. Admiral Canaris, ex-lover of Mata Hari and probably the only man in history to be "of two minds" about Hitler. And many more… These extraordinary intelligence exploits are revealed for the first time in this true story of "the war within the war." "I believe this book will rank with The Double XX and The Ultra Secret in providing a true picture of the extent to which Intelligence contributed to the defeat of the Nazis." - Frederick Winterbotham, 'Zero C' in the war. CHARLES WHITING was born in York, England, in 1926 and is well known in Britain for his books on World War II. He has worked with the U.S. Air Force and has taught literature and German studies. His books include 'Hitler's Secret War', 'Werewolf' and 'Monty's Greatest Victory'. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

It takes us rapidly through the pre-war to the end of WWII with some details on the great operations and characters involved. But this book is truly only an overview, you need to read other books to learn all the details (it is only 232 pages.)Very easy to read, reads like a novel in most places, with interesting notes which tells us where the persons involved ended up.

We get to find out who "James Bond 007's" character was really based on and how Ian Fleming knew him. Whiting also captures how inept the political and military leadership of the USA and the UK were in utilizing the intelligence being collected.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very quotable, very intelligent and ultimately too rich By Phred I think it was Christopher, the first to post an Amazon review of this the Kindle Edition of Views and who brought it to my attention. I got it on the theory that much of Henry James can be too densely written for my taste, but that I wanted something by him I could finish. This taste has whetted my appetite, and has confirmed my cautions. This short selection of reviews by James provided me with more quotable material in fewer pages than any writer this side of Shakespeare. By the end I was fighting my way through needlessly convoluted sentence structure and a notion that Henry James really like to hear himself. In an early selection he describes a writer as: "not offensively clever" a wonderfully clever turn of phrase. He has little good to say of Walt Whitman saying of him: " He tell us in the lines quoted that the words of his book are nothing. To our perception they are everything and very little at that." Nicely written burn. What exactly are we to make of:" ...the critics taking notes as we may in the interests of truth, George Elliot belongs in that class of pre-eminent writers in relation to whom the imagination comes to self-consciousness only to find itself in subjugation." Say Whaa? For at least 2/3 of this brief selection I was in a state of astonishment that Henry James could use such a vast vocabulary with such precision. And then... and then. James will often scold a writer for phrases that "Smell too much of the candle?" a lovely way to describe an obviously forced but intended to be casually remark. Yet James's reputation is that he would labor over his texts only slightly more than he expected of his reader.I will be reconsidering writers such as Kipling, given the adulation he receives in this collection. I am all the more leery that Henry James can write with too much smell of the candle. Further he can be complex for no obvious reason except to fill more space on the way to making a point.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Henry James wrote for money. By Christopher (o.d.c.) Date of the collection: 1908. Each review is preceded by its original publication date.George Eliot's poetry? Tennyson's dramas? An outright pan of Walt Whitman, and OUR MUTUAL FRIEND? Are the reviews Henry James wrote in the 1870s and 1880s worth reading today?Consider this, on the essays of Swinburne:Mr. Swinburne is a dozen times too verbose; at least one-half of his phrases are what the French call phrases in the air. One-half of his sentence is always a repetition, for mere fancy's sake and nothing more, of the meaning of the other half—a play upon its words, an echo, a reflection, a duplication. This trick, of course, makes a writer formidably prolix. What we have called the absence of the moral sense of the writer of these essays is, however, their most disagreeable feature. By this we do not mean that Mr. Swinburne is not didactic, nor edifying, nor devoted to pleading the cause of virtue. We mean simply that his moral plummet does not sink at all, and that when he pretends to drop it he is simply dabbling in the relatively very shallow pool of the picturesque.Henry James liked metaphors and similes. Some of those he comes up with are very striking:Our Mutual Friend is, to our perception, the poorest of Mr. Dickens's works. And it is poor with the poverty not of momentary embarrassment, but of permanent exhaustion. It is wanting in inspiration. For the last ten years it has seemed to us that Mr. Dickens has been unmistakeably forcing himself. Bleak House was forced; Little Dorrit was laboured; the present work is dug out as with a spade and pickaxe. As I look over my highlights, I find this general statement on the value of criticism, which holds as true today as it did in the 1870s:"... The tendencies of our civilisation are certainly not such as foster a preponderance of morbid speculation. Our national genius inclines yearly more and more to resolve itself into a vast machine for sifting, in all things, the wheat from the chaff. American society is so shrewd, that we may safely allow it to make application of the truths of the study. Only let us keep it supplied with the truths of the study, and not with the half-truths of the forum. Let criticism take the stream of truth at its source, and then practice can take it half-way down. When criticism takes it half-way down, practice will come poorly off."
