Here is the first statewide collection of true Florida murders, and, as the saying goes, truth is stranger than fiction. The Sunshine State has played host to a memorable and varied array of crimes of passion, greed, and revenge.
In stories spanning from the 1860s to the 1990s, you will meet such varied characters as Lena Clarke, a killer with both her feet planted in a dozen bewildering worlds; Terry Jo, the Sea Waif; Chief Tigertail; the outlaw Ed Watson; Blue, the Enforcer; President Franklin Roosevelt; the Duke of Windsor; novelist Zora Neale Hurston; Lobster Boy; the Gulf Stream Pirate; Brother Gillette, a gentle Shaker who killed out of compassion; and Pensacola's Black Widow, a Spider Woman who killed without mercy.

Each tale, each peek into the state's colorful history, becomes a portal that links us directly to the present. In McIver's hands, the past is a living entity." -T.J. It details injustices that occurred in the counties I grew up around such as Columbia, Hamilton, and Suwannee Counties in the mid 20th century. Although I was not around during the times the events in the book depicts, I had heard of some the racial, biased cases as a child. The book provided a good sense of history in those areas during that time, and help me to appreciate how more civil we have become. It also give me hope for a better and harmonious tomorrow if we continue to spread love around.

McGinn As this and a view other books I have read since I moved to Florida can attest, there have been a lot of sensational crimes here in the Sunshine State. They even managed to send OJ to jail where the great state of California failed, though not for murder, obviously. This book is well written in a true crime reporting style, and from what I can judge, also well researched. The author has written ten books and hundreds of articles about Florida, so I think we can assume he knows of what he writes. A few of these murder cases are famous, but several were unknown to me. Of special interest to me were a couple of cases I have run into previously: the story about the Duke of Windsor (former king of England) and Wallace Simpson (am I allowed to write her name without putting the word "commoner" in front of it?) and their attempt to frame someone for murder. This tale was featured in a series I watched based on the "Dance to the Music of Time" series. And then there was the bombing follow-up to the Sheriff McCall murder that was featured in the book "Devil in the Grove."Many other of the chapters were just as interesting, while a few were much less intriguing to me, but not because of the quality of the writing. The quality of the writing is very consistently high. This is volume 2 of the Florida Chronicles, so I imagine I will have to seek out volume 1 someday, which is apparently about less violent evildoers.

Some like the lobster boy story are bizzare, some like the Moore bombing are tragic. As a native Floridian I wish our transplants would read books like this.
