A LEGEND.

Review He's done it again!By ~Brandy~ on January 4, 2016Format: Kindle EditionHoly frickin WOW!!! The stories just keep getting better. S.k. Ballinger must enjoy keeping his readers on the edge of their seat!!!This story is another continuation of Stanley Swanson Breed of a Werewolf and is focused on the daughter of said Swanson. You watch her grow and become an adult. You witness her thoughts on her life's events (both past and present) and you can see some of her hatred towards those who've done her and her family wrong. Strong willed and minded as she takes you on this journey.Very wise for her age, but possibly foolish as well. The spin towards the end will have you gripping your seat wondering what happens next.Highly recommend from beginning to end this series as it has captured my heart and mind.

From the Author I really enjoyed writing this book.  I chose to write about her as in the novel, she was young and believed to be the first werewolf with supreme capabilities as she was able to nearly fully transition at such a young age.  My intent is to do a whole lot more writing based off this character, a novel of her own.

About the Author S.K.Ballinger lives in central Kansas. Has four children that is theworld to him. Has owned two patents known as the 'Sherloc' and 'CanHandle'. Also while being venturous has owned his own business at onepoint. He simply tries over and over and is not afraid to keep going. His latest is writing. The autobiography of 'Blissful Misery' is thefirst series of three. His attempt is to do something very uncommonin writing about his life. While this first book now known as 'BM'has stirred up much controversy, he continues to write. With his passion for writing taking off, he was awarded best of the best horror by SNSBAH in 2015.  This year 2016 he has recently signed with Stitched Smile Publications as he looks forward for the opportunity in this new business friendship.  He has given the Publication the reigns to his 'Swanson' trilogy as he focuses on beginning the second set of the Bloodline Series Vol.2 and finishing up his second autobiography of the Blissful Misery series.  For S.K. Ballinger, this is just the start of his brilliant writing life as he pushes forward in giving the readers something extremely different and new.

Harold "Red" Allen, the father of NFL Hall of Fame Running Back, Marcus Allen and CFL Hall of Fame Quarterback, Damon Allen has earned the privilege to be called a father. With all the responsibilities that come with being a father and all that it entails, to be called one by your child is one of the greatest honors that can be given. For the six children of the Allen family, when they looked for a role model they didn't have to look far - Harold "Red" Allen sat across the dinner table.Red was also their little league coach, history teacher, guidance counselor and many other job titles that can't fit on a standard one-page resume. Along with Gwendolyn, his wife of 57 years, they have formed quite a team and delivered a message of hard work, faith and love that has been embraced by their children. Darius, the youngest of the family, in a gesture of honor and respect, has passed on his father's message in this gem of a book.

Red: Life Lessons from a Father, by Harold "Red" Allen, Darius Allen

From the Author If you're ready to earn the title of father and not just pin a nametag on your shirt, grab a hard hat and a pack a lunch. Being a father is not a job where you get a pat on the back for showing up. This is an all-day job--I'm talking 24/7, 365 days a year.

From the Back Cover Red: Life Lessons from a Father is a powerful offering for people of all walks of life. You can be old school, new school or no school. Red's life lessons will resonate with aspiring youth, caring adults, loving parents and courageous men who are ready to tackle the important job of being a father. With his unique voice and ageless wisdom, Red's words will hit home and recall a time where being a father was more than just a title.

About the Author As the youngest of six kids, Darius Allen couldn't help but to observe the movie called The Allen Family. All the philosophies, quotes, and books from his Texas-born father, Red, were passed down to him with the responsibility to cherish and recount them.Darius's wonder years were filled with childhood dreams of representing Encanto Little League in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania; trips to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to root for the Trojans; visiting the Los Angeles Raiders' locker room to collect sweaty wristbands from his brother's teammates; and traveling to the cold weather of Canada to watch another brother play in the Grey Cup.He graduated at the University of Southern California with a degree in Economics and a special interest in sitting in cinema classes. As the Founder and CEO of Varsity Club, Darius can now be found writing a novel, revising a screenplay, and shining a light on the trailblazers and trendsetters who have strived for excellence in the past, present and future.

Beginning in a small town in Texas, the story winds through one man's growing sense of purpose, and pursuit to create an ethical, balanced, value-driven life, as he grows from boy to teen, man, husband and father. This memoir delves into sports, military service, pets, friendship, work integrity, and a man's desire to infuse a family with a sense of love, duty and honor.Red provides concise narratives to illustrate each of his insights and why he chooses to take the path that will be the most meaningful, though rarely the easiest. A satisfying read for anyone looking for motivation to live a more inspired and meaningful life. Especially recommended to new, or soon-to-be fathers.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this touching By Dawna King I thoroughly enjoyed reading this touching, witty and inspirational story of the Allen Family Patriarch. It is quite the page turner. Having known the family for over 30 years, this book broadened my insight to the Man who raised such exceptional and highly regarded human beings, Harold, Marcus, Damon, Michael, Michelle and Darius. I was also inspired by all the life 'anecdotes' that resonated so strongly throughout the book. And the melancholy tune and reminder of the long driveway on Winston Drive and cheerleading for the CIF championship where Marcus scored 5 touchdowns enveloped my heart and brought a smile to my face. I would highly recommend purchasing Red: Life lessons from a Father. WELL DONE Red and Darius!! I can't wait to read about your incredible Mom, Gwen Allen. :)

By Julianne Foley Picture yourself sitting on a front porch swing, kicking back with one of your favorite people. There’s nowhere else you’d rather be than listening to the stories he’s spinning -- as only he can; in a voice that’s uniquely his. That’s exactly what it’s like reading RED: Life Lessons from a Father. While this may be the story of how Red Allen grew into the man he is, and how together with his wife of 50+ years, Gwendolyn, built the Allen Family, it’s a story that will resonate with all of us. His words – liberally sprinkled with aphorisms and twists on clichés – are nonetheless insightful, thoughtful, wise, and full of a wry humor that will not only touch your heart but also your funny bone. I loved every minute I spent reading it.Job well done, Mr. Allen.

Hello, my name is Raven, or at least that's what I have always been told. I live at the Halfway House with Eloise Mayflower, my den mother. I am a paranormal, I am seventeen years old, and, oh yeah, I am a vampire. Whenever I ask about the family I can't remember, I am met with hushed whispers and looks of deception. Something is not right; I might be a vampire, but I am not stupid. A sexy centaur named Samuel Mane enters my world, and my future starts looking bright and exciting. When my best friend, Sorin Osmochescu, decides that Samuel is too dangerous and forbids me to see him, I have to make a choice—the only family I have ever known or my true love. An afternoon chat with council member Rumor Winslow leaves me terrified … A secret past? Hidden identities? Lives in imminent danger? Holy sharp fangs, Batman! Who EXACTLY am I?

During its short lifespan, the Weimar Republic (1918-33) witnessed an unprecedented flowering of achievements in many areas, including psychology, political theory, physics, philosophy, literary and cultural criticism, and the arts. Leading intellectuals, scholars, and critics--such as Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, Ernst Bloch, Bertolt Brecht, and Martin Heidegger--emerged during this time to become the foremost thinkers of the twentieth century. Even today, the Weimar era remains a vital resource for new intellectual movements. In this incomparable collection, Weimar Thought presents both the specialist and the general reader a comprehensive guide and unified portrait of the most important innovators, themes, and trends of this fascinating period.

The book is divided into four thematic sections: law, politics, and society; philosophy, theology, and science; aesthetics, literature, and film; and general cultural and social themes of the Weimar period. The volume brings together established and emerging scholars from a remarkable array of fields, and each individual essay serves as an overview for a particular discipline while offering distinctive critical engagement with relevant problems and debates.

Whether used as an introductory companion or advanced scholarly resource, Weimar Thought provides insight into the rich developments behind the intellectual foundations of modernity.

Weimar Thought: A Contested LegacyFrom Princeton University Press

Review "By seeking understanding and refraining from evaluative synthesis, every contribution in this volume prompts the reader to reflect on lessons of Weimar in light of the present social, political, and cultural situation. Its innovative methodological outlook and its numerous field-specific interventions make Weimar Thought an indispensible resource for any future studies of the epoch."--Dennis Johanssen, German Quarterly"This sophisticated compendium of 19 essays by leading scholars in history, cultural studies, political science, and philosophy attempts to address the complexity, importance, and legacy of one of the 20th century's most important eras of intellectual activity. . . . [T]hese intellectual histories are not very connected to context, providing instead effective overviews and suggesting some new ways to consider intellectual giants of the 20th century. That feat is impressive and valuable."--Choice

From the Back Cover

"This is the first work in a generation that presents a comprehensive overview of Weimar culture with all its complexity and contradictions. It successfully shows continuities and discontinuities with the past, and tensions that resist reduction. The book's reach--from theology to the biological sciences, and literary criticism to legal theory--goes far beyond any other volume I am aware of on the same subject."--Peter Carl Caldwell, Rice University

"In the annals of cultural history, the Weimar Republic was an ideational crucible that bears comparison only with classical Athens and Renaissance Florence. In many respects, as a site of modernity, its achievements remain unsurpassed. Weimar Thought revisits this legacy in ways that are fresh, rich, thought provoking, and subtle. It is destined to become the standard work on the Weimar experience for years to come."--Richard Wolin, author of Heidegger's Children: Hannah Arendt, Karl Löwith, Hans Jonas, and Herbert Marcuse

"This collection provides readers with a clear introduction to the riches of intellectual life in Weimar Germany and contextualizes many of the trends and innovations that took place there. Essential for anyone interested in the philosophical, theological, historical, political, legal, aesthetic, and scientific movements of Weimar Germany, this book will have a wide audience."--Leora Batnitzky, Princeton University

"The years of the short-lived Weimar Republic witnessed a remarkable burgeoning of intellectual and cultural activity. Incorporating recent theoretical and methodological currents, and more recent advances in empirical scholarship, this timely volume brings together outstanding scholars of the field and synthesizes this crucial moment in modern culture."--Warren Breckman, University of Pennsylvania

About the Author Peter E. Gordon is the Amabel B. James Professor of History at Harvard University. His books include Continental Divide and Rosenzweig and Heidegger. John P. McCormick is professor of political science at the University of Chicago. His books include Machiavellian Democracy and Weber, Habermas, and Transformations of the European State.

Elliott So many of the most influential thinkers of the late 19th and entire 20th century had at least their intellectual roots in the German-speaking parts of Europe (and many of the rest of us had them as powerful teachers) that it is essential to understand both the ideas themselves and also what produced this extraordinary efflorescence. This book, together with Peter Watson's "The German Genius" (which covers an even longer time period of about 250 years), give a clarity and insight that was simply unavailable, to my knowledge, 35-45 years ago when I was in college and later studying, teaching, and working in Germany. Even decades of wide reading and even wider travel later, I have learned a great that is useful from this book, and I recommend it highly.

Another excellent map from Nat Geo By G3 As expected, another outstanding map from Nat Geo.I love the toughness, resilience, and clarity of these maps. Having the Mojave Preserve (one of my favorite destinations) all on one map is wonderful.I have found, after extensive exploration, that some of the lesser roads are not shown on this map. But they're not on any of my other map resources either. So know that you'll be penning-in some extra roads when you go trekking in the Preserve.

Also has helpful park regulations. I prefer using maps to relying on electronic devices and this one is very easy to use and is very accurate, easy to put an overlay onto it for waypoints if you don't want to mark it permanently.

By Sierrahoosier A little less detailed than the National Geographic map, but it's all on one page which is nice. On the other hand, you should stay out of the entire area this map covers because it all belongs to me.I tease. Come enjoy one of the most beautiful places on Earth and bring this map and a full tank of gas and plenty of water with you.

The dynamic classroom is a place where the interaction between teacher and students produces engagement and learning. Success depends on what the teacher does, how it fits in with the needs of the students, and the quality and utilization of resources. In The Wannado Curriculum, author Ihor Charischak tells how he turned his vision of a dynamic Math 2.0 classroom into a reality.

Part memoir, part teaching tool, The Wannado Curriculum offers insight into helping teachers establish a context for creating their own “wannado” curriculum, a project-based approach where the context makes the content interesting to students. Charischak:

• Describes how growing up as an immigrant in America impacted his learning • Tells how he discovered the secret to working with unmotivated students • Explores the idea that alternative ways of teaching and learning are the keys to powerful, dynamic teaching and learning that motivates students • Discusses his experiences in a private, child-centered school, where he used computers to practice the teaching and learning he was excited about • Relays how the real-life game of craps inspired a reluctant student to ask questions about the mathematical intricacies of the game • Brings to life his experiences with computers in teaching math • Details his vision of the dynamic math classroom • Introduces Math 2.0, a powerful environment that uses mathematics software and collaborative Web 2.0 tools in a dynamic classroom setting

The Wannado Curriculum presents glimpses of what twenty-first century math teaching and learning could look like if a student-driven and teacher-supported method was universally embraced.

I am a believer of interactive, motivated learning with a purpose. I have worked in a few different teaching environments and I escpecially like Ihor's ideas on getting unmotivated students MOTIVATED. From humble beginnings and a love of baseball to a dynamic and inspiring educator, I found this book a highly useful tool for myself and any other educator wanting to create an enriched and dynamic learning environment.

Piaseckyj Knowing Ihor from the time that we worked together at a resort in the New York Catskill Borscht belt in the 1960’s, where I met his sister, and a few years later became his brother-in-law, we had numerous lively discussions on topics that interested us.When it came to mathematics, which always intrigued me, Ihor had so much to say about the revolutionary educational literature of the 1960’s and 70’s. Those were heady days for the Flower Children, out there impatiently trying to change the world in less than one generation!Ihor, through the years as an educator impressed me as a dedicated and inspirational mathematician, sincerely interest in stimulating students to understand, appreciate and use mathematics.I remember when the first computers came out, Ihor immediately studied the possibilities in using this technology to enhance mathematical education. I believe that he is one of the pioneers in this approach. When he discussed his thoughts about writing this book, he wanted to use biographical information as instructional material for teaching mathematics. I was skeptical. I thought, who wants to know another coming to American story, since it has been done so many times before. But after reading the book, I saw Ihor proved to be up to the task, and produced a beautiful story that is more about learning how to be a mathematician and an educator then some “love me book”.By sharing his personal experience in teaching mathematics and computer usage in the classroom, Ihor brings a vivid and meaningful educational experience to the classroom. This book will enhance the understanding and enthusiasm for the use of computers as a tool, to improve mathematical education.

I also taught mathematics for many years and shared many of the same experiences trying to make the content more interesting and relevant for students. The book is written in a way that makes it easy to read and you enjoy getting to know the author as he describes his journey. Then, at the end, when you realize he has retired, you find yourself hoping that is another teacher out there like him --- taking his place as a math educator.

In the beginning of American history, the Word was in Spanish, Latin, and native languages like Nahuatal. But while Spanish and Catholic Christianity reached the New World in 1492, it was only with settlements in the seventeenth century that English-language Bibles and Protestant Christendom arrived. The Puritans brought with them intense devotion to Scripture, as well as their ideal of Christendom -- a civilization characterized by a thorough intermingling of the Bible with everything else. That ideal began this country's journey from the Puritan's City on a Hill to the Bible-quoting country the U.S. is today. In the Beginning Was the Word shows how important the Bible remained, even as that Puritan ideal changed considerably through the early stages of American history.Author Mark Noll shows how seventeenth-century Americans received conflicting models of scriptural authority from Europe: the Bible under Christendom (high Anglicanism), the Bible over Christendom (moderate Puritanism), and the Bible against Christendom (Anabaptists, enthusiasts, Quakers). In the eighteenth century, the colonists turned increasingly to the Bible against Christendom, a stance that fueled the Revolution against Anglican Britain and prepared the way for a new country founded on the separation of church and state. One of the foremost scholars of American Christianity, Mark Noll brings a wealth of research and wisdom to In the Beginning Was the Word, providing a sweeping, engaging, and insightful survey of the relationship between the Bible and public issues from the beginning of European settlement. A seminal new work from a world-class scholar, this book offers a fresh account of the contested, sometimes ambiguous, but definite biblical roots of American history.

In the Beginning Was the Word: The Bible in American Public Life, 1492-1783, by Mark A. Noll

Review "A superb study of Early America's most widely read book by one of the nation's leading historians of religion. No one has ever before described and analyzed the role of the Bible in colonial America as thoroughly as Mark Noll has in this important book. In the Beginning Was the Word is a landmark work of history." -- Gordon S. Wood, Professor of History Emeritus, Brown University

"In the Beginning Was the Word documents the Bible's ubiquity in the nation's formative years. With massive research and lapidary prose, Noll shows how Scripture provided solace for individuals, authority for Protestants, and warrants for Christendom. Lest there be any doubt, the volume secures the author's rank as the dean of active American religious historians." -- Grant Wacker, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Christian History, Duke Divinity School

"Mark Noll has written a learned and wise treatment of the power of the Bible in early American history, sensitive to the ways Scripture was invoked on different sides of many disputes. Noll appropriately roots his account in the Old World background and restores the importance of Puritanism to the course of American History." -- Daniel Walker Howe, Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848

"Noll shows how 17th-century Americans received conflicting models of scriptural authority from Europe: the Bible under Christendom (high Anglicanism), the Bible over Christendom (moderate Puritanism), and the Bible against Christendom (Anabaptists, enthusiasts, Quakers). In the 18th century, the colonists turned increasingly to the Bible against Christendom, fueling the Revolution against Britain and preparing the way for a new country founded on the separation of church and state." --Wichita Eagle, New & Notable

"[A] rich and deep examination of the place of the bible, both as an object and a source of ideas, in the public life of early America . . . Noll has demonstrated that it is virtually impossible to understand the colonial society without understanding the place, significance, and prominence of scripture in private and public life." --New Books in History

"Monumental . . . The story told by Noll brims with ironies and complexities. The first installment of a projected two-volume history of the Bible in American public life, In the Beginning Was the Word is the fruit of Noll's many years of deep reflection combined with his proven talent for synthesis." --Peter Thuesen, Books & Culture, selected as a Favorite Book of 2015

About the Author Mark A. Noll is the Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame and author of numerous books, including America's God: From Jonathan Edwards to Abraham Lincoln (OUP 2002) and Protestantism: A Very Short Introduction (OUP 2011).

McAnaney Professor of History at Notre Dame University and one of the leading authorities on American church history, examines in detail the role of the Bible in the public square in early America from 1492 to 1783. He begins by defining two concepts—biblicism which means “Scripture alone” and Christendom which equates to a church-state union or cooperation. He traces how “institutional Christendom” was gradually supplanted by an “informal Christendom” in the colonies. This is primarily a Protestant story, and one that is tied almost exclusively to the King James Version (KJV) of Scripture. One common theme is the diversity of interpretation of Scripture alone, with some renderings 180 degrees apart.Noll begins with an overview of Martin Luther’s proclamation of Scripture alone and the English Bible from William Tyndale, to the Geneva Bible, and finally to the KJV. Next he explores how the Puritan system in the Massachusetts colony would be challenged by people like Anne Hutchinson, Roger Williams, and the Baptists, where all parties involved anchored their positions in biblicism. Puritan biblicism was also contested by the religious toleration of Pennsylvania and several other colonies, and it came to an end in 1684 when the crown made Massachusetts a royal colony.A number of topics are covered in this wide-ranging study. Colonial preachers employed the Bible to support the British wars with the ungodly, Roman Catholics in the first part of the 18th century, only to later paint the English crown with similar strokes. The Bible played a major role in the Frist Great Awakening in the 1730s and early 1740s, and both opponents and proponents of the revival used this work to justify their positions. Scripture was also employed in colonial life on the issues of economics, slavery and race, both natural and moral philosophy, and politics. For example, the revivalists, like George Whitefield, brought the Gospel to the slaves. Their biblicism led them to encourage the slaves to learn to read, which would allow them to explore the Scriptures for themselves. The evangelists, however, did not denounce slavery, and occasionally defended the system. Yet, the introduction of Scripture to slaves would lead to several deadly uprisings in the early 1800s.Noll ends with two chapters on the Bible’s role in the American Revolution. Both those who supported the revolt against Great Britain and those who backed the king found support in Scripture, sometimes utilizing the same passage to buttress their arguments; e.g., Romans 13. One irony was that Thomas Paine, who would later denounce Christianity, used in Common Sense several Old Testament passages to show that monarchy was a government condemned by God. In his later work, The Age of Reason, he would label Christianity a “fable” and point out what he saw as its many “internal contradictions.”This is a well-written, tightly argued work based on a combination of primary sources and a number of specialized monographs. Like his previous books, In the Beginning Was the Word, is a worthwhile read. This book is the first of two volumes on the topic, with the second covering the 19th century.
