It was a little confusing and muddled, but it was written from a teenager's point of view, so I'll go with it being the reason for it. However, quite a bit didn't sync in my head. Maybe it's my age or something? I grew up near Houston, so I'm a little fascinated with the weird set up.Jason is a gay boy of an age that isn't really given that I noticed. Maybe just out of school? He has a crush on Adam, a guy whose age is also not stated, that ran away from home and is now living on the streets and pushing drugs. Jason glamorizes that type of life, wanting to experience it. What I couldn't consolidate in my head is WHY Jason wanted to live that kind of life? Kelly, his friend, was physically abused at home and I could see her finding the streets as an acceptable alternative. Tanya and Jason? Not so much. Jason has the instincts, but not the ability to act on them in a way that would keep him safe. He freezes up a lot. Tanya, other than getting pregnant by a junky, really doesn't seem to have it bad. I admit that I started to skim the book, so maybe I missed where Jason and Tanya had it so bad in suburbia. Why did they need to run away? Especially when Tanya offered a perfectly acceptable and safe alternative for Kelly to not stay with her abusive family/father/mother/brother, I have no idea. But Jason keeps articles about the gang of runaways in Houston, mostly because his older brother ran off and disappeared there. He's rightly afraid of this group. Yet, the lure of being with Adam pushes Jason on, so when Kelly finally can't take it, he runs away with Kelly and Tanya to the city. With disturbing dreams to foreshadow the events to come, they go towards what they think will somehow be better.Spoilers! This is where my age and personal experience clash. Jason sees these people, knows that they're dangerous, but he doesn't tell Tanya or Kelly. He doesn't try to really warn them on their first run in with them. And then they start getting harassed by the gang, they are all borderline useless in getting out of it. It's only the timely arrival of some cops that safe them from the inevitable.Adam shows up and saves them from the night on the street and Jason sees this as his chance to get with his crush. They find out what happened to Tanya's baby's daddy, sort of. Then stuff goes downhill. Fast. All captured by the gang, I literally couldn't really read any of it. I felt sick and disconnected and completely uncomfortable. I have no idea if this is what Sharp was going for, but it went from what I assumed would be a rocky romance novel and turned into a strange romance, suspense, action thriller. The end result of this mess was just...ugh. It was terrible. Everyone dead and though Sharp tried to give a hopeful end to this...I didn't really see it being hopeful. Just a jump to a new mess.END SPOILERSI don't understand the real motivation behind the actions of the kids in this book, other than Kelly. Even hers barely make sense with alternatives by her friends. Their life doesn't seem that bad. Maybe this is a cautionary tale about wanting to flirt with danger just for the rush of it. I really don't see any growth of Jason at the end of the book. Just...ugh. I don't get the draw of the characters to one another. Beyond, Jason to the dangerous and independent Adam and Adam to the normal and clean Jason. That really wasn't enough to solidify anything. If anything, it made it harder to read because you could sense the train wreck that Jason was heading towards.I was going to check out more of Sharp's book, but I really am leery of it after this. If you like...I have no idea what to classify this as. If you like dark, dirty and hopeless tales of kids that just cement how incapable they are to survive in the world, this is your book. If not, steer clear. There are some abuse triggers, attempted rape, torture, corpse mutilation and murder.

By Jason Swarthout If your looking for one of those books that is a coming age and where everything comes together in the end this book is not for you. If you are however willing to take a journey into a dark reality that only a mind like David Sharp can lead you on then buckle up because its a scary ride! I have read several of David Sharp's books and the one thing I love is that each one leaves me disturbed and unsettled and always wanting more. If I wanted a cookie cutter story I would watch the Brady Bunch or go see the next Hollywood remake of the remake. Step out of your comfort zone and dive into the captivating world of David Sharp and live on the edge. Escape from Dolphin Street was excellent journey into the darkness!

The ever present, grinding anxiety leads to an amazing conclusion that Clive Barker would be proud of! I can't wait to see where he takes us next!
