3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Mac S. By Mac S. The narratives in Patrio Acts deal with one fundamental question: what makes an American? Can Americans wear turbans? Can they pray in public? The narrators in this book are being stripped of their Americanism (which is different than citizenship) and in America, that means they are being stripped of their humanity. I wonder if this tendency to equate Americanism with basic humanity is unique to the US or if other countries do the same. A trademark of American patriotism is to equate America with freedom and freedom with one's basic rights. But this belief, the supreme confidence American's have in this idea, relies on that freedom being inseparable from their person and not just from the government. So how do people's freedom get stripped from them so easily in the United States? How is it so easy to draw lines between the Americans that are "American" and the Americans who can be cast out, disavowed, and persecuted? For me, this is the crux of Patriot Acts. The stories are individually striking, heartbreaking, infuriating, and empowering. Together, they depict a strong nation -- that is out of reach for many. Stories like Rana's story show how much recourse there is for action in the government and in nonprofits, however getting to them in any meaningful way appears to be often impossible.Perhaps the most painful accounts in Patriot Acts, for me, were the stories of bullying in schools. They depict so clearly the role of our ignorance as a nation and as individuals. It is both heartbreaking and enraging that teachers, parents, and schools can be the main persecutors in so many of these stories. The stories of Rana and Gurwinder really drove the cultural ignorance home, but also my own ignorance: I reflected on the anger of my muslim or Sikh friends and how naive I was of what they were facing from the rest of the country, even as they were facing persecution in other parts of the world. I'm so glad to have read this book.

Reading Patriot Acts so many years after the events of 9/11 was an awakening not to be overlooked. It's alarmingly easy to forget things you were hardly aware of in the first place: I was young and far-removed from most of the events, and thus protected from the outrageous prejudice that many of my peers had to face. The stories of post-9/11 injustice exposed by this book from the awesome series Voice of Witness are an important reality check for anyone who has the privilege of taking the discriminatory tendencies of this country lightlyThe stories are complex, but the discrimination is simple. Rooted in fear, and exacerbated by media, the paranoia and ill-conceived quest for vengeance that followed 9/11 made life a living hell for ordinary people, from young children to college students to trusted community members. Turbans and hijabs become probable cause, classrooms become centers of intolerance, and basic rights are thrown out the window.The book does an excellent job of demonstrating the wide range of differences among a group of narrators erroneously lumped together by society as "dangerous." Yet at the same time, the commonalities are difficult to ignore- I was shocked and saddened by the pervasiveness of discrimination and ignorance the narrators faced and continue to face.To be entirely honest, by the end of this book the individuals I find myself fearing most are white men in suits.

Crowe Patriot Acts documents the experiences of Arab and Muslim Americans - or any one who might vaguely pass for one - after 9/11. Some of the stories sound familiar - discrimination in an airport - while others - the sudden and unexplained imprisonment of sixteen-year-old Adama Bah - are shocking. Individual prejudice and institutionalized discrimination are both justified by a sometimes subtle and sometimes not de-Americanizing, and therefore dehumanizing, of the narrators. But after listening to their stories - in which a sense of dignity, strength, and occasionally even humor prevail - the humanity of these people, and this book, cannot be denied.

In this story we meet the rock star Orphan (Chris) and Iris his fiancée. Their love is a great example of what love should be. Cora befriends the two and develops newer friendships with Olivia and Armand. This book got pretty intense. A turf war breaks out leaving Cora in some pretty sticky situations and Marcus feeling like there have been too many close calls. Cora decides to help out the Orphan and Iris when they get themselves into trouble. Cora does this without Marcus's knowledge. She opens herself up to many dangerous situations because she wants to have her own independence and Marcus just wants to keep her safe. I am really interested in seeing what happens in the next book, because this one got me. - I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

By Mwaka You know that feeling you get when you wake up from a good dream and you just want to go back to sleep and continue enjoying it. That is what I felt when I came to the end of this trilogy, as it was that good I just wanted to keep myself immersed in the life of Marcus and Cora.This is the first time I have read Lee’s books and she has a fan in my now, boy does she know how to spin a tale that engrosses you, you just don’t want it to end.I will not go in details about what happens in the book as I do not like spoilers, but one of my favourite phrases was “Not a god, Say my name”. Now I will let you minds wonder what that was all about and just encourage you to pick up this book and read it.If you love Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series, you will definitely love Innocence in the Underworld.

Now, onto the good part!!! I read the first book and so should you. It will help understand book 2 in this set! There is no spoiler in my review. As, such I was ready and prepped to read all night long (which I did yet again) when I opened this book up to start it.This writer/author takes you on a grand ride that digs deeper into the stories we are told as children. Where they come from, what makes them what they are. She drags you by the seat of your pants into it. (I had coffee ready to read through the night now) I could not put this down as I traveled the magical world she makes with her words!!If you believe in the grand courts of the fae, or you want to dip your toes in and see how they interact with us then this is your book! It is light hearted in places, funny in others. Its a sstoryof emotions, reactions, thrills, chills and down right goofy actions.I REALLY wish amazon would allow us more then 5 stars, as this book deserves no less then 9 stars!! Addie is fast becoming one of my favorite writers for this type of book! All, I can say is this is a much read!!

Great read for all By Smart shopper mom Great Read for all ages, This is an wonderful book and does an awesome job at making the stories of The Grimm legacy and fairy tales different then what we have read or seen yet. A story about Janie, and how she has to follow her dads legacy after his death and finds a frog prince along the way. A book you can't put down and just want to keep reading till then end. Make sure you read book 1 first in this series , it will help clear up any questions you have prior to reading book 2. This is book 2 of three so make sure you also pick up the last one so you are not delayed in reading the whole series. The author did an awesome job in writing the story and all the details in it as well. I am looking forward to reading the next last book in this series.

Meyer A handwriting curriculum that incorporates God's word, is fun for the kids, and easy on mom? Yes, please! We have been using this with my 5 and almost 4 year old with great results. The lessons are scripted for me with only a quick read before getting started as the only prep involved. Supplies are simple and already on hand (glue, pencils, etc.). My daughters enjoy them and the lessons are quick. Just the right amount of writing practice for them! Includes various teaching methods, and the best part is that we are keeping grounded in scripture the whole time. Such a bonus! I have actually never used the original curriculum, Write Through the Bible, with my older child, but now I think I'll try that one out too. (I received this product in exchange for providing my honest opinion.)

Simple, Easy, Fun and Bible Solid By Katie AS a busy homeschooling mom of 14, I am always looking for great simple, solid, Bible based school materials. Write Trough the Bible Junior is a wonderful tool to introduce my young ones to the fun and beauty of letters and writing. My preschoolers love having their own Bible copy work to do each day. I love that it is so simple and easy that my teenagers can teach it when I am busy. I will be using this program again. It is wonderful.

By Jody Smith I am so excited to have a simple, practically ready to go curriculum for my preschooler! This book is fabulous with its gentle introduction to letter recognition, letter sounds, writing, and Bible memory. My daughter is not quite 4 and cannot wait everyday to dive into it. If you are looking for Bible based curriculum for your preschool aged children or even a Kinder needing some extra practice this program is fabulous!

He's a Russian mob boss and she an FBI agent. Who would have expected her to connect to the one man who she has to arrest. Will they be able find happily ever after or did Bethany just make the biggest mistake of he life by sleeping with the enemy?? I cannot wait to find out what happens next in book 2!!! Ahhhh!!!!!

By Laurig I love this book-although I'm not a fan of stringing the parts of books out, I don't mind if only a couple I loved watching the two main characters dance around each other with their amazing chemistry-they come to care for each other And she finds out at the end of this book she's sleeping with the head of the cartel!! So good with some hot loving too.

Just like the first four, Mrs. Good Choice never disappoints. There's always a great character lesson learned from each story, that kids of all ages will enjoy. This time we get introduced to Mr. Good Choice. FUN! I can't wait to see what Book 6 is going to be about and what lesson it will teach. This is a must for any kids, grandkids, nephews, nieces, etc. Quite simply , it is a must for any child you know that you want to be exposed to good values and the importance of making good choices!

As with all her stories I am always so impressed with her imagination and writing style. She's hit it out of the park with this one. I enjoyed this from the first line to the last. Her characters are always easy to imagine everyday people not so different from many of us who read these treasures. Through her stories I have witnessed the incredible growth of a true author. If you haven't read one of Bridget's books I highly recommend them. They are all my favorites. You won't be disappointed.

It was interesting to see the interaction between Trish and her sister. Strained, a bit bitter but still so typical of siblings. Her finally caving in to the much needed rest was nicely done. The meeting with Kennedy easy very nice, gentle, fun. Definitely had a grin on my face. The walk in the woods and then the meeting out in the open was so beautifully done. The sene so awe, beauty and joy it evoked was awesome. I was sad to have it end. I wanted to know more! This was a very nice read, fun and uplifting.

As with most of her holiday books it's a quick read but well worth it.Trish has a past that is effecting her present. Can she learn to let it go and start fresh and accept things that aren't normal.

That you are the one who is capable to your own destiny and don't be mad and angry at yourself but be happy with who you are. He wrote a short story about his life but after that he brings his truth that brings meaning and realization you may be going your life in the wrong direction. The grammer may not be perfect but it might have been intentional genius to express his message given within this book.
