HAYES Humble, regretful but forceful scientific & philosophical case for agnosticism by a contemporary of Darwin. I've read recent agnostic arguments by Dawkins, Matt Young, Victor Stenger, Hitchens, Sam Harris: they don't add much to what Romanes wrote in 1878. A very good book on the cumulative force of 19th century agnosticism is A. N. Wilson's GOD'S FUNERAL (1999).
