As a child growing up in Belfast in the 1950s, Monica Connell spent the summer holidays in Donegal, Ireland. In the 1990s, by then an anthropologist and author, she returned to Donegal with her husband. This is the story of that return: the harsh beauty of the landscape & elements, and the sense of fun & community in the face of tensions between tradition and modernity. Monica Connell has such a gift of beautifully describing the details of her surroundings that I now have this very vivid picture of this Donegal town in my mind. It is amazing to think that this book is about an Irish town in the nineties, instead of much earlier, as it seems such a basic and hard way of life.As it is a description of this Donegal town in the nineties, I am curious to know what happened to the town and the people in the book. The way Monica Connell described her early life and her father, moved me to tears. Her father must have been an impressive and special man.
