About the Author Major General J.F.C. Fuller (1878-1966) was one of the most important and original military thinkers of this century. He served as lieutenant in the Boer War, organized the first British tank corps in World War I, and developed the strategy and tactics of tank warfare which were later put to such effective use by the Nazis for their World War II blitzkriegs. His many books include A Military History of the Western World (3 volumes), The Generalship of Ulysses S. Grant, Julius Caesar: Man, Soldier, and Tyrant, and The Generalship of Alexander the Great, all of which are available from Da Capo Press/Perseus Book Group.

Fuller quickly and accurately summarizes the important developments of military theory and tactics from the limited wars of the European kings to the mass warfare of the Second World War, ending with the effect of nuclear holocaust on military strategy.Yes, his analysis of the second world war draws heavily on his anti-communist views. But make the effort to strip away his political viewpoint from his analysis of the interaction of social systems and technology on the method of making war, and you won't be disappointed. Fuller was a perceptive soldier who understood his business better than most.

Fuller should be studied with Sun Tzu and Clausewitz By travel light and smiling The three authors definitely follow the line laid so well by Sherman: It is well that war is so horrible, or we might like it.Were you to read the three, you might gain some insight as to why wars are fought at all, and maybe how to avoid the worst of some truly horrible mistakes.Part of the insights they have in common: none of them operate by formula. Each one plays proper respect to the circumstances in which wars occur. By contrast, I would say that Jomini represents a much more formulaic and therefore more rigid position than any of the three referenced.A truth about fighting in general is that if you deliver set-piece attacks or defenses, your adversary will in time discover what you do, and figure out a way to counter it.Your chances of winning improve with your ability to adapt to and then confuse an opponent.

By Rodrigo Diaz of Bivar An indispensable book to anyone interested in military operations, why nations engage in conflict and how they are much easier to begin than to end. I recommend any of General Fuller's works, but this work is his masterwork, in my opinion.
