20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. 0) is by far the better of the two By Lupa I read TLAC 1.0, and this edition (2.0) is by far the better of the two. And that's saying a lot, because I also loved the first as well. It offers an even deeper exploration of techniques that really help increase rigor, including several new techniques for writing (Art of the Sentence and Show Call were my favorite). Even when the book tread on topics I was familiar with, I didn't feel like I was rereading the same book at all (Systems and Routines, Ratio, and Checking For Understanding get HUGE upgrades). The clips were also great companions to the book. I was a little hesitant at first because I thought I was going to get the same as 1.0, but 2.0 is so different and in all the best ways. I'm really glad I read it, and I can't wait to use these techniques in my classroom!

A Must-Read Resource for Educators By ST One impediment to change in any situation or field is that we tend to hesitate to believe in things we haven’t seen with our own eyes. Sometimes when you want to solve a problem, the solution doesn’t exist. But sometimes it does and you just haven’t seen it yet. For example, maybe you still believe achievement gaps aren’t closeable.To this point, Doug Lemov’s TEACH LIKE A CHAMPION 2.0 makes this argument: “We are not suffering from a lack of solutions so much as our failure to learn from teachers who have generated insight and put their ideas to work.” Achievement gaps are closeable, and this book, a follow-up to his 2010 bestseller, TEACH LIKE A CHAMPION, describes 62 techniques that have been demonstrated to help.This new version is not merely some lightly-ruffled second edition. Doug and his colleagues have spent the past four years vigilantly researching what he calls “champion teachers,” looking for additional clues about what makes them successful. For instance, he has added a whole new section on checking for understanding and how to build a “culture of error”—an environment in which it’s safe to be wrong. As he rightly points out, “If your goal is to find and address the mistakes your students make, your task is far more difficult if your students seek to hide their errors from you.” So he explains how to solve that problem. He has also expanded the original technique called “Ratio” into several chapters that focus on how to strengthen student engagement and rigor (what he calls “participation ratio” and “thinking ratio”)—by building ratio with questioning, writing, and discussions.Doug addresses many important concerns that teachers have, whether they’ve been in the field for 20 minutes or 20 years. And his writing is crisp, clear, and humble. He knows this is hard work, and he’s doing everything he can to help. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Wow! By Loyd Eskildson Author Lemov built his list of 62 techniques by observing differences between great and merely good teachers. He believes, after reading Jim Collins' 'Good to Great' that this is more relevant than looking at what distinguishes great from poor or mediocre. His intent is to describe each of the 62 in specific, actionable behaviors (techniques), not in generalities such as 'high expectations (strategies).Before getting into those individual techniques, however, Lemov also makes a few important background points. One is that state (or other) standards are meaningless unless they also define how success will be measured - difficulty of questions can vary considerably. A second - that lesson plans too often simply describe what will be covered in class as part of fulfilling a regulatory requirement; much better if they include how this will be accomplished. A third - Asian schools view mastery of foundational skills (eg. multiplication tables) as freeing students to undertake more cognitive processes.Developing his list of techniques began by looking at test-score results and demographic information from around the country Outliers (high poverty levels AND high performance on state tests) got his attention. He then broke those schools scores down by grade level and subject, finding the best areas within the best schools. What followed was a five-year project recording teachers across the country. Central to them all is the belief that students won't learn unless the teacher succeeds in capturing their attention and gets them to follow instructions - 'classroom management.' That topic is ignored by most education schools, and when it is, usually only addresses abstract ideas such as writing up rules rather than the content of those rules.While Lemov was developing his techniques, he was working at Uncommon Schools, a 38-school non-profit charter network. At first the organization relied on excellent experienced teachers plucked from public schools. However, competition from other charter schools made this increasingly difficult --> the need for an effective training mechanism. What makes 'Teach Like a Champion' especially valuable is the accompanying CD that demonstrates use of the techniques by effective teachers. Lemov's main clients are other charter schools, as well as 'Teach for America' and Teacher U.'Uncommon Schools' goal is to reverse the achievement gap with white students from low-poverty areas. This is not always achieved, but they are consistently successful in significantly outperforming their local peers. The majority of students qualify for free/reduced-price meals, classes start earlier than most public schools as part of extending the school day. Most devote double the time to math than local public schools.Author Lemov makes no secret of the fact that this book is an updated version of the first edition, and contends it's worth reading because of extensive revisions - clarifications of earlier points, and some 13 new points. It's structured around four segments: 1)Check for (Pupil) Understanding, 2)Academic Ethos (seeking maximum academic rigor), 3)Ratio - getting students to do as much of the cognitive work as one can. and 4)Behavior and Culture - a topic so often neglected in teacher training programs, yet so important to success.A key aspect to it all - Lemov does not prescribe that one needs to apply all 62 suggestions at once, taking one at a time and working forward is great. That makes it digestible.The 'bad news' is that I was unable to play the enclosed disc on my TV that contained examples of each technique, nor could I do so on my PC. (Probably my failing due to technical ineptness.) I also tried the web-site examples, they worked well, but weren't really set up as well as the accompanying disc.
