Life on the Mississippi, by Mark Twain

Review Memoir of the steamboat era on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War by Mark Twain, published in 1883. The book begins with a brief history of the river from its discovery by Hernando de Soto in 1541. Chapters 4-22 describe Twain's career as a Mississippi steamboat pilot, the fulfillment of a childhood dream. The second half of Life on the Mississippi tells of Twain's return, many years after, to travel the river from St. Louis to New Orleans. By then the competition from railroads had made steamboats passe, in spite of improvements in navigation and boat construction. Twain sees new, large cities on the river, and records his observations on greed, gullibility, tragedy, and bad architecture. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Publisher 8 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Back Cover Part travel book, part autobiography, and part social commentary, Life on the Mississippi is a memoir of the cub pilot's apprenticeship, a record of Twain's return to the river and to Hannibal as an adult, a meditation on the harsh vagaries of nature, and a study of the varied and sometimes violent activities engaged in by those who live on the river's shores.

Allen Greenbaum This book--at times disjointed, rambling, self-referential, and irreverent--is decades ahead of its time. It's an interdisciplinarian's dream as Twain takes on economics, geography, politics, ancient and contemporary history, and folklore with equal ease. Mostly though, one appreciates his knack for exaggeration, the tall tale, and the outright lie. It's a triumph of tone, as he lets you in on his wild wit, his keen observation, and his penchant for bending the truth without losing his credibility as a guide. The book's structure is also modern: He recounts his days as a paddlewheel steam boat "cub," piloting the hundreds of miles of the Mississippi before the Civil War, then, in Part 2, returns to retrace his paddleboat route. Although a few of his many digressions don't work (they sometimes sound formulaic or too detailed) most of the narrative is extremely entertaining. Twain seems caught between admiration and disdain for the "modern" age-but he also rejects over-sentimentality over the past. He writes with beauty and cynicism, verve and humor. Very highly recommended!

The attention to detail and description place you within the story. This book is actually, I believe, an autobiography of Mark Twain's (Samuel Clemmons) life as a young man piloting steamboats up and down the Mississippi River.Whether the man, Mark Twain, interests you or not, Life on the Mississippi, is an eye opening look at America in an earlier era.In my (humble) opinion this is Mark Twain's best work.

64 of 72 people found the following review helpful. A compelling monologue of biography, geography and history By Corinne H. Smith Let me guess: your total exposure to Mark Twain came in high school, when you were forced to read about the antics of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer, right? Well, now that you've reached adulthood, you should make time to read _Life on the Mississippi_. It's mandatory reading if you live in a state that borders the great river, anywhere from Minnesota down to Louisiana. It's mandatory reading if you have come to that point in life when you can suddenly appreciate American history and post-Civil War stories written by someone who lived through that time. Writing in the first half of the 1870s, Twain retraces the steps of his youth: the watery highway he knew when he trained to be a riverboat pilot nearly 20 years earlier. He speaks of how life _was_ along the river, and what life _became_. It's almost a "you can't go home again" experience for him, while the reader gets the benefit of discovering both time periods. I have two favorite parts that I share with others. Chapter IX includes a wonderful dissertation about how learning the navigational intricacies of the river caused Twain to lose the ability to see its natural beauty. And Chapter XLV includes an assessment of how the people of the North and the South reacted differently to the war experience. If I were a social studies teacher, I'd use that last passage in a unit on the reconstruction period. So put this title on your vacation reading list, and don't fret: the chapters are short and are many -- 60! -- but you can stop at any time, and the words go by fast. _Life on the Mississippi_ should make you forget all about any Twain trauma and report-writing you may have suffered as a teenager. [This reviewer was an Illinois resident when these comments were written.]

National Geographic's World map is the standard by which all other reference maps are measured. The World map is meticulously researched and adheres to National Geographic's convention of making independent, apolitical decisions based on extensive research using multiple authoritative source.

The signature Classic style map uses a bright, easy to read color palette featuring blue oceans and stunning shaded relief that has been featured on National Geographic wall maps for over 75 years. Drawn in the Winkel Tripel projection, distortions are minimized and unlike many other World maps, Greenland is show the same size as Argentina and not as the size of all of South America.

Thousands of place names are carefully and artistically placed on the map to maintain legibility even in the heavily populated ares of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Details include clearly defined international boundaries, cities, physical features, rivers, and ocean floor features. Corner inset maps feature vegetation and land use, and population density as well as the north and south polar regions.

The map is encapsulated in heavy-duty 1.6 mil laminate which makes the paper much more durable and resistant to the swelling and shrinking caused by changes in humidity. Laminated maps can be framed without the need for glass, so the fames can be much lighter and less expensive.

25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Good, large map By jdtang We wanted a large wall map that would be durable enough to withstand kids touching it, but which wouldn't cost a fortune. This map was the perfect option. It is definitely large -- it doesn't take up the whole wall, but it is WAY bigger than a typical poster. The lamination is well done, which should keep the map protected. It is very shiny, so if you are putting it up in a room that gets a lot of direct sunlight you will want to take that into consideration.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Exactly as described By JK The map was exactly what I was looking for. I bought it to hang on our Sunday School wall to help the children see where missionaries we support are working. It is colorful and looks nice. I was confused by some reviews that said it came in multiple pieces. It came in one piece and was easy to hang on the wall.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A world-class view By Judith This is an excellent world map. Working in education I became accustomed to having a variety of world maps around me. I never realized how often I referenced one until I retired. After much searching I chose this one based on the reviews, the size, and the "zoom" technique of the map displayed so I could see the details before purchasing. The map arrived the next day and I was/am impressed by everything. It's perfectly laminated, came rolled securely in a plastic sleeve and was packed well in a cardboard shipping tube with paper stuffing to hold it in place. (Great job, packer!) The map itself is just the right color and the text is sharp and easy to read. Now I can re-file the folded world map that came in my National Geographic Magazine and enjoy this larger version.

After being stood up at the alter, the protagonist (Brandt) is as you'd expect, angry and hurt. She's definitely not in the mood for a honeymoon cruise, but when her request for a refund is denied, she ends up cruising alone. Some things are meant to be. In 1977, Johnson's best selling How Long Will South Africa Survive? offered a controversial and highly original analysis of the survival prospects of apartheid. Now, after more than two decades of the ANC in government, he believes the question must be posed again. "The big question about ANC rule," Johnson writes, "is whether African nationalism would be able to cope with the challenges of running a modern industrial economy. Twenty years of ANC rule have shown conclusively that the party is hopelessly ill equipped for this task. Indeed, everything suggests that South Africa under the ANC is fast slipping backward and that even the survival of South Africa as a unitary state cannot be taken for granted. The fundamental reason why the question of regime change has to be posed is that it is now clear that South Africa can either choose to have an ANC government or it can have a modern industrial economy. It cannot have both."

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Johnson paints a scary picture By Amazon Customer Extremely well researched and lucidly argued. The shear quantity of the corruption and incompetence it chronicles is overwhelming. This is not about MPs cheating on their expenses, it is grand larceny and cluelessness on a amind-boggling scale. The main conclusion: that the ANC does not have the ability or vision or honesty to govern a modern economy, and that the South Africa is a steadily failing state. The analogy of the Titanic comes to mind. In this case the captain (President Zuma) and his crew are far too busy partying and looting to notice that South Africa is steaming straight towards a financial cliff. This is a book that all South Africans, and those who have an interest in its future, should read and take notice of.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Crisp and sober analysis By Khumbulani The book offers a great historical foundation to its conclusions. There is some over-simplification of some issues but overall a credible account and analysis. It's definitely a compulsory reading for all South Africans, especially the ruling ANC.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. salacious read while also being a concise, sober assessment By Dan K. Eberhart For anyone wanting to familiarize their self with the rich and turbulent history of Jacob Zuma and the recent ANC, this book is a one stop fulfilment of that mission though there have been further escapades since its publishing (namely Zuma firing finance minister Nene). The author often pulls salient details that add color or illustrate how bizarre or egregious something is.I am an American and have been to South Africa numerous times. I enjoy visiting immensely. That said, I knew relatively little about the Zuma or the ANC post-Mandela when I started reading this book and I undoubtedly learned a great deal from reading it. The book will leave leader with a comprehension of a political structure stocked to the rim with corruption and nepotism and barely focused on governing. When they are, they are greedy and economically illiterate.Where the author thinks the country is headed should be quasi-terrifying for those with a vested interest in South Africa. However, SA is a beautiful country blessed with both natural resources and smart, dynamic people. It is more than capable of rising despite its current leadership. The book is a salacious read while also being a concise, sober assessment of the current government. I recommend it!

This is not a text that has a religious slant – it is not meant to be a collection of your typical religious tales. In fact, the stories are generally dark and a bit controversial. Read at your own discretion.) "God Gave Me Butterfly Wings" is a whimsical collection of flash fiction (very short stories) that turn religion, myth, and legend upside-down. In these pages exist fallen angels, helpless gods, and glimpses of the afterlife. These tiny stories are perfect for those that love to read complete stories, but never seem able to find the time to finish an entire novel.

Interesting Work By Amazon Customer I love Taylor's writing style, loved her first flash fiction collection ''Suicide of the Moon'', so I was sure I would love this collection as well, and I did. All stories are highly emotional and their theme is broken trust in God. Highly recommend this anthology and already looking forward to the third one!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. beautifully written By Sarah So much power written in so few words. Taylor's ability to create such vivid worlds in her flash fiction stories is unparalleled. She does such a beautiful job playing with the myth genre. You will not regret a single second reading this collection.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. God Gave Me Butterfly Wings Is A Beautiful, Dark Treasure By Amazon Customer God Gave Me Butterfly Wings is a very misleading title. While it does talk about God and angels and heaven, it’s not the all powerful deity and pureness we have come to associate with those ideas.Instead, Taylor brings a very dark perspective to the entities we have come to think of as omniscient, kind, just, and caring. In one story, Taylor gives us an interesting view of God as a celestial maintenance man. In another, God is an indifferent bored deity playing with our worlds like a child with a new toy, until that child destroys it and wants another. In the title story someone asks to fly and God sews wings onto their back and soul, and we learn that for every wish there is a cost.Taylor’s unique voice, established in The Suicide of the Moon, is ever present in this one. Her tales are thought provoking and carry you into the heart of the story from the beginning. They are reminiscent of classic fairy tales or fables, the ones meant for adults before the Victorians changed them into harmless tales for children. Taylor’s style is such that by the time you are finished, you don’t want to leave. My only complaint is that there were no more stories and I have to wait for the next book.God Gave Me Butterfly Wings is a beautiful, dark treasure.
