How does early comprehension develop in young children, and how can we better prepare preschoolers to become successful readers? This important volume compiles today's best research on the often-overlooked topic of prereader comprehension: what we know about it now, and what we need to know to build a stronger foundation for children's future reading skills. More than two dozen literacy experts clearly describe theoretical models of early comprehension, demystify current research, recommend effective practices for boosting comprehension, and identify critical research priorities for the near future. An essential text and reference for reading specialists, program administrators, SLPs, preservice professionals, and researchers, this volume is key to helping children develop the early comprehension skills that support later reading success.

KEY TOPICS COVERED:
  • the importance of teaching all young children comprehension strategies
  • connections between vocabulary development and listening comprehension

Developing Early Comprehension: Laying the Foundation for Reading SuccessFrom Brookes Publishing

Review “Rich in food for thought--and action--for researchers, educators, and policymakers interested in understanding and supporting children’s early language and literacy development.” (Margaret G. McKeown, Ph.D.)

About the Author

Andrea DeBruin-Parecki is nationally recognized for her work in the field of family literacy. She developed the Adult–Child Interactive Reading Inventory (ACIRI), a reliable and valid tool that measures the interactive reading skills of an adult and a child during storybook reading (available from Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co.). She has designed family literacy programs and has acted as a consultant across the country. In addition to the ACIRI, she created the Early Literacy Skills Assessment, a comprehensive, reliable, and valid tool in the form of a children's storybook that measures phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, comprehension, and concepts about print. She has expertise in the areas of emergent literacy, assessment, literacy within at-risk and minority populations, and the motivation of at-risk populations. She was a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Guatemala. Her work related to literacy development in young children and families has been published and presented at national, regional, and state conferences.

Dr. van Kleeck's research focuses on language and emerging literacy skills in children who are language impaired as well as the broader group of children who are at risk academically. Some specific areas of interests include (a) parents’ language socialization processes in the home that provide their young children with foundations for later literacy and academic success, and (b) issues related to language assessment in the preschool population. Her most recent work focuses on what she refers to as the academic talk register in preschoolers, and it’s importance to later academic achievement. Dr. van Kleeck’s previous publications include several edited books, nearly 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, and 25 book chapters. She has given several hundred invited and peer-reviewed presentations nationally and internationally.

Dr. Gear teaches special education core courses: educational and diagnostic assessment, instructional methods, individual education programming, directed field experience, collaboration, and transitions. Before teaching at ODU, she taught diverse learners in grades PreK-12th, general and special education in public school, treatment programs, home-based instruction, as well as adult basic education. She has authored and co-authored book chapters and articles; presented at international, national, and regional conferences; is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, including special interest divisions, and a member of the National Head Start Association. She is a reviewer for the National Head Start Association Dialog. She is a contributing author and researcher for the Virginia Early Childhood Policy Center, and the Teacher Immersion Residency Program at ODU. Her research goals include teacher and parent education to improve outcomes for children with disabilities.

Susan B. Neuman, Ed.D., is a professor in educational studies specializing in early literacy development. Previously, she directed the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement. Her research and teaching interests include early childhood policy, curriculum, and early reading instruction from prekindergarten to Grade 3. In her role as Assistant Secretary, she established the Reading First program and the Early Reading First program and was responsible for the implementation of all activities in Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Act.

Dr. Barrueco is Assistant Professor of Psychology and Fellow of the Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies at The Catholic University of America. Dr. Barrueco specializes in the prevention and early intervention of developmental difficulties, particularly among language-minority, immigrant, and migrant children. Much of her grant-funded research has focused on early bilingual, socioemotional, and acculturative processes within the Latino community.

Throughout her training and career, Dr. Barrueco has been dedicated to learning and utilizing advanced statistics to advance scientific knowledge and practice with young immigrant children and families. This approach is rooted in a community-based participatory research framework involving strong collaborations with families and the local and national programs that serve them. This is reflected in her involvement in local and national studies with Head Start, Early Head Start, and Migrant and Seasonal Head Start as well as her appointments as Board Vice Chair of the DC Bilingual Public Charter School and on the Advisory Committee of the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Immigration.

Michael D. Coyne, Ph.D., Professor, Special Education Program, Department of Educational Psychology, Neag School of Education, Unit 3064, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut 06269.

Michael Coyne is a professor of special education in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. He is also a research scientist at the Center for Behavioral Education and Research. His research focuses on beginning reading and early vocabulary instruction and intervention, school-based experimental research, multitiered or response to intervention systems of support, and effective practices for students with learning disabilities.

After 5 years of experience teaching in elementary schools in the Philadelphia area, David K. Dickinson, Ed.D., attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education and then served as Director of Teacher Education at the Child Study Department at Tufts University and joined the Education Department at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he received tenure. He moved to the Education Development Center (EDC) in 1994 to join the team that developed the Early Childhood Generalist certificate for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. In 1995 he established the New England Research Center on Head Start Quality, which examined the impact of Head Start on children's language and literacy development and on families, with special attention to the development of children whose first language is Spanish. He and Catherine Snow received the initial funding that launched the Home-School Study of Language and Literacy Development in 1987, and he directed the school portion of the study during the preschool years. Drawing on early results from this study, he and colleagues at EDC developed the Literacy Environment Enrichment Project, an approach to helping preschool teachers and their supervisors adopt more effective practices to support children's language and literacy. He and others at EDC are developing and researching a version of this program that will be delivered using the Internet in combination with interactive television. His work has been published in numerous articles, and he has edited two other books, Bridges to Literacy: Children, Families and Schools (Blackwell, 1994) and Handbook of Early Literacy Research (co-edited with Susan Neuman, Guilford Press, 2001). He and Miriam W. Smith are co-authors (with Angela Sangeorge & Louisa Anastasopoulos) of the Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation Toolkit, Research Edition (Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2002), a set of tools for evaluating the quality of literacy support in early childhood classrooms.

Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D., H. Rodney Sharp Professor, School of Education, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware 19716. Dr. Golinkoff conducts research in language acquisition, children's knowledge of geometric forms, and playful learning. Among her awards are a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the Urie Bronfenbrenner Award for Lifetime Contribution to Developmental Psychology, and the Francis Alison award-the highest prize given to faculty at the University of Delaware. She is the author of 12 books and numerous journal articles and is committed to the dissemination of developmental science.

Keegan Crenshaw needs a hero. She's a straight-A student from a famous Oklahoma family and the youngest-ever editor of her college newspaper. She's got a lot to prove. But she's got enemies. Someone's out to get her. Someone's got her running scared. And she runs right into the arms of a boy named Blue. Deep down, Blue is still the brave soldier who risked his life for others in Afghanistan. He's still a hero, even if he no longer believes it. All he wants now, though, is to make music and bury the secret that could destroy his future. Blue tries hard to be a good guy. But he's wrestling with demons he can barely control. And when Keegan moves into his house and very quickly into his heart, his hard-fought control begins to slip away. Keegan and Blue can't stay away from each other, can't stop thinking about each other. They have a connection--body, mind and soul--they cannot resist. But it will cost them dearly. Secrets have a way of exploding into the light. Sometimes it's hard to know who's a hero and who'll turn out to be a heartbreaker. Is Blue the love of Keegan's life, her knight in shining armor? Or will he become an agonizing mistake? Searing and sexy, Tangled Up in Blue explores the consequences of deception, the meaning of courage and the redeeming value of sacrificial love. It contains strong language and adult situations. Book 2, Shelter from the Storm, continues and concludes the story of Keegan and Blue. Tangled Up in Blue (Ikana College Book 1), by J.D. Brick

From the Author Tangled Up in Blue is Book One in the contemporary romance series, Ikana College. The series is set in an Oklahoma college town and revolves around a group of students from wildly different backgrounds who find themselves living together in a ramshackle party house known as the Canadian Embassy. All of them have to wrestle with the real-life consequences of not only their own actions, but also those of the imperfect adults around them. Lots of love, lust and drama ensues, accompanied by some damn good music. Book Two, Shelter from the Storm, continues the epic love story of Keegan and Blue, and introduces additional colorful characters with problems and passions of their own.

From the Back Cover Tangled Up in Blue and Shelter from the Storm are the first two books in the Ikana College series written by author JD Brick. Together, the books tell the tale of an epic love story that plays out on a college campus, over the wind-swept prairie of a vast Oklahoma ranch and on a blood-soaked battlefield in Afghanistan. It's searing and sexy, heart-wrenching and electrifying. As one reviewer put it, "this story is so beautifully written, so heartwarming, so intriguing, I just couldn't put it down."

About the Author I'm crazy for sweeping, ugly-cry tales of true love that are full of heat and heartbreak. So that's what I read, and that's what I try to write. I live in Florida, which is paradise about half the year and a hot mess the rest of the time. I've been a journalist, technical writer and intrepid humor columnist, which is the only kind of humor columnist worth being. I'm also a wife, mother, corporate refugee, ever hopeful if seldom successful gardener, and slave to great books and good coffee. Or vice versa.Visit JDBrick.com for more information.

I found it at the wattapp and I started reading it because it was a complete storie without waiting and all. Few chapters after I started it I decide to buy it and have it in my kindle, not only because it was in good price but because this story made me cry and laught, made me feel every single feeling of them, every single thoughts they had. That kind of stories are my favorites and I have to support J.D. and her work for that. She deserves it!So, about the story! It's a love story between two colleges student(of course) which they have personal problems and a past who hunt them. Colleges not my fav subject but....when the story is well written then wtf I will read it anyway! Buck to my comment. Keegan is a nice girl, down to earth but she lives in her own bubble not aware what is going on with the people in her life. ( Don't want to say much more about it and spoil the story). And there is Blue! A man with blue eyes and a lickable body! Of course it would be a man like him...always have! Former military, came back from Afganistan, down to earth guy too, love music and I think he studies music at the university. Don't know exactly. They meet at the Canadian Empassy, a house Blue lives with three other collages and Keegan is the new roommate. The chemistry was instand and things went natural but fast. They definitely look like it meant to be together 4ever but.....So, 4 stars! I realy wanted to put 5 but in the middle of the story I wanted more. So much more! About the personal moments they shared, and to be more open with their feelings. They did but at some point it had to be more honesty. Hope the second book will have that.Thank you J.D for the beautiful story and I can't wait for the next book to come.

At the risk of being accused of bible-bashing I am giving answer number one - from Corinthians 13: 4-8."Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not self-seeking, It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."But there is another answer. It is in a novel by JD Brick called Tangled Up in Blue. In this beautiful and deeply affecting story the star-crossed lovers Keegan and Blue encounter the fates. She is a highly talented career girl and he is a man in a million who carries deadly and heartbreaking war baggage. As the action gathered momentum I began to understand that here was a love story that bore comparison with Jane Eyre, Dr Zhivago and Bonjour Tristesse to name but three. One line written by Blue seemed to me to encapsulate the relationship between these two unforgettable characters: "I could taste tears, but I didn't know if they were mine or hers."

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I couldn't put it down! By Kindle Customer I had to get to the end. I had to know what was going to happen next. The emotions were so strong. I can't wait for the next one to come out.My heart aches for Keegan and Blue. I hope that all the frustration I feel for them fuels Keegan on to get her pay back on them all.

Aidan Collins lives in a world divided. Sorcerers--people who can safely use magic--make up the majority of the population, while wizards--people with dangerous magic banned by the government--are a highly regulated minority. Despite living as a second class citizen, Aidan is more or less content with his life in a San Francisco Wizards' Quarter, helping young, freshly manifested wizards adjust to their new circumstances. He has faith the system is looking out for him; a faith he's never had reason to question. Until one night when he's rescued from two abusive cops by the mysterious sorcerer, Eallair, who--along with ridiculous hair and an unpronounceable name--brings along dangerous ideas of freedom and choice. It doesn't take long for truths Aidan's known his entire life to be exposed as lies and Aidan finds himself on the run with Eallair, caught up in his desperate, years' long quest to find the resting place of the legendary King Arthur. As Aidan leaves behind the only life he's ever known, he has to find a way to fit into a world where outcasts are hunted down and killed and, just maybe, become an unlikely hero along the way. CONTENT ADVISORY: This story contains a "to be continued ending".

An engaging hero, intriguing story line, and the beginnings of a powerful loving relationship By Rodney F Morrison Young Aiden Collins quietly and humbly accepts the second class status to which his government has consigned him, yet he generously reaches out with compassion to others in an effort to help youngsters like himself adjust to the life they must lead to survive in their world. As the story unfolds you can't help but empathize with Aiden and hope for his survival amidst nearly impossible odds. But that is not all. In telling Aiden's story, author Dan Wingreen also guides you into an alternate reality with its own culture and history. Romance begins to unfold as well, as Aiden is rescued and guided by a powerful sorcerer. The relationship is intriguing because while the sorcerer is Aiden's rescuer and mentor, it becomes clear that, powerful as he is, the sorcerer stands no chance of success without Aiden's help. There is no doubt that love and sex is in store for the pair, but this is no story about a quick affair. The relationship is gradually growing as two souls unite in a powerful relationship, but sex will wait until a future chapter. This first book clearly lays the foundation for their relationship and much more, as the hero is started on a path that will change his world forever. I have already bought the next book. Awakening Aiden is a great start to what I am sure will continue to be a rewarding and engaging story.

THIS IS ANOTHER FINE PIECE OF WRITING BY THIS AUTHOR By Blaltimore Phil This is an engaging imaginative tale with a new twist in search of King Arthur. I especially liked the self deprecating humor of one of our protagonists. Also, the interaction between the two main characters had a playful, light intrigue. Aidan's awakening was awesome considering his previous beliefs and culturally conditioning. The story had decent plot , good pacing and character development. I appreciate that this isn't necessarily a romance(although, it does slowly develop) but more how a relationship forms. This is a good thing. The quest is the primary focus with plenty of events to keep a lively interest. The lack of sexual scenes is not bothersome. To me, this is more about working together in a common cause with the romantic part as a sideline. This author has a talent keeping one's attention and interest in the ongoing developments. The writing does connect the reader to the characters and main story line. Yeah, I would recommend reading this one.

Chase Totally random happenstance how I came across this book, but I'm so happy to add this new-to-me author to my must read list. I had no idea what I was in for when I started reading, but by page 5 I was completely absorbed in the story. I love the magical world the author wove, Aidan is a character that stuck with me long after I finished, and the writing was a treat.Yes, there is a bit of a "to be continued" ending, but it's not what I'd call a total cliffhanger. Just the continuation of the quest. If you're looking for an entertaining, fast-paced story with characters who jump off the page, don't pass this one up.Highly recommend!

“This is a really crucial book! It coincides with calls to confront rising tuition costs and the crisis in student loans. Many commentators’ suggestions/demands invoke tinkering within the traditional paradigms of university operations. Dr. Featherman makes the case that colleges and universities must undertake fundamental changes or they will lose the opportunity to design their own reform. The importance of this book is heightened by her extensive experience and research. Dr. Featherman has blown a loud whistle on the causes of this crisis – causes embedded in dysfunctional traditions that must change to avoid the risks of a diminished system of higher education. Reading this book was like sitting across from an experienced, dedicated, articulate person and having a substantive and understandable conversation about a critically important issue! As a one-time dean, provost, and president, I found myself constantly shaking my head and whispering ‘Right on!’.” ?Dr. Lois Cronholm, Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer , City College of New York, (ret.)Sandra Featherman believes that colleges are in denial about the severity of the threats to the current model of higher education.Based on her own experience as a president, as a trustee, and as a board member who has worked in private and public universities – and on interviews with the presidents of major institutions – she offers both a trenchant analysis of those threats and clear prescriptions about the painful but necessary decisions that colleges need to make to ensure they remain viable, accessible and affordable, and deliver a high-quality education.Sandra Featherman considers higher education to be at a game-changing moment. When markets don’t function well – as is the case with today’s college marketplace with offerings that cost too much and return too little – it opens the door to new types of suppliers, who offer new ways of providing what students are looking for, particularly the increasing cohort of mature, working students. In the face of new competitors – for-profit education companies, technology start-ups, and foreign universities vying for international students – trustees and senior level administrators are generally stuck in a traditional ethos and with decision-making processes unsuited to these times. They know what used to work, and find it easier to follow old ways than to make the difficult transition to new ways of delivering education. She lays out a strategy: that emphasizes the centrality of students and how to provide them with the most effective learning environment; that is clear-eyed about focusing on the core missions, and abandoning practices that constrain or impede them; and that requires constant self-monitoring to learn from and act upon what works. She offers a blueprint for redesigning institutions, for paring away what is unnecessary and cost ineffective, and for adopting the best technologies, all in the service of developing meaningful degree programs at an affordable price, and widening access for under-represented groups. She ranges over the implications of budget decisions, accreditation, and MOOCs; addresses government regulation and tuition costs; presents promising new models; and concludes with 11 key recommendations that should be heeded by all higher education administrators and trustees.

A book for those serious about the future of higher education By Sam Wilson I must say that this book captures a lot of issue swirling around in higher education. I made sure to share it with some of my fellow faculty in our small liberal arts college. I think that our current model is unsustainable, and yet a new model is yet to emerge. The author's exploration of the current status of higher ed and the innovations--disruptive and otherwise--that are under way provides perspective needed by anyone thinking about how to save this core component of our society amidst the changes that would threaten the very existence of institutions fundamental to the survival of our values and culture as a democratic society. I hope these ideas gain the kind of traction in the policy debates that they deserve.
