In 1795, New Orleans was a sleepy outpost at the edge of Spain's American empire. By the 1820s, it was teeming with life, its levees packed with cotton and sugar. New Orleans had become the unquestioned urban capital of the antebellum South. Looking at this remarkable period filled with ideological struggle, class politics, and powerful personalities, Building the Land of Dreams is the narrative biography of a fascinating city at the most crucial turning point in its history.

Eberhard Faber tells the vivid story of how American rule forced New Orleans through a vast transition: from the ordered colonial world of hierarchy and subordination to the fluid, unpredictable chaos of democratic capitalism. The change in authority, from imperial Spain to Jeffersonian America, transformed everything. As the city's diverse people struggled over the terms of the transition, they built the foundations of a dynamic, contentious hybrid metropolis. Faber describes the vital individuals who played a role in New Orleans history: from the wealthy creole planters who dreaded the influx of revolutionary ideas, to the American arrivistes who combined idealistic visions of a new republican society with selfish dreams of quick plantation fortunes, to Thomas Jefferson himself, whose powerful democratic vision for Louisiana eventually conflicted with his equally strong sense of realpolitik and desire to strengthen the American union.

Revealing how New Orleans was formed by America's greatest impulses and ambitions, Building the Land of Dreams is an inspired exploration of one of the world's most iconic cities.

Review Winner of the 2015 Kemper and Leila Williams Prize in Louisiana History, Historic New Orleans Collection and the Louisiana Historical Association"Multicultural New Orleans maintains a mystique that stems from its unique development under governments of France, Spain, and Thomas Jefferson's U.S., argues musician-turned-history teacher Faber in this remarkable and thorough history."--Publishers Weekly"This well-researched snapshot of a brief period of the city's lengthy history richly details personalities and events, offering a valuable perspective to history students and anyone who has experienced the Crescent City's vibrant ways of life."--Library Journal

From the Back Cover

"In this brilliant book, Eberhard Faber reveals how the creole elite of colonial New Orleans adapted to American rule on their own terms. With thorough research and vivid prose, Building the Land of Dreams illuminates American expansion in exciting new ways."--Alan Taylor, author of The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832

"This outstanding book takes up a large and absorbing story: Louisiana's incorporation into the American Union as a constitutional equal with other states. Faber untangles this intricate history with admirable clarity and lots of good judgment. In his sensitive hands a cast of characters ranging from Spanish dons and creole warhorses to American newcomers comes to life. Building the Land of Dreams is a fine work of distinction."--Lawrence N. Powell, Tulane University

"Imaginatively researched and elegantly written, this book puts stubborn ideas about early nineteenth-century New Orleans to rest and alters our understanding of Jeffersonian America in a significant way. It introduces readers to intriguing personalities and stories, and undertakes a new interpretation of the incorporation of New Orleans into the economy and body politic of the United States. This is a landmark book on the history of the early American republic."--Daniel H. Usner, Vanderbilt University

"Building the Land of Dreams presents the history of New Orleans and its environs from the end of Spanish rule to after statehood in 1812, from frontier outpost to one of the United States' most populous and thriving cities. This important book is filled with considerable primary research and advances a number of significant debates."--Robert L. Paquette, Alexander Hamilton Institute

The roots of Louisiana, from imperial Spain through to the American revolution, and its role in the cultural and structural formation of the U.S. are as seldom known as they are appreciated. This text is here to remind us. A wealth of riveting information is delivered through captivating prose, certain to not disappoint.

For students thinking of becoming teachers in my educational psychology classes, there is a much more definitive teaching identified for 'brain-based learning,' and an increase in the application of the neuro-scientific approach for the learners to reflect and apply at increased grade levels." (Arthur Huinker, Professor 2006-02-22)"Marilee Sprenger makes the neuroscience content more accessible to 'newbies.' Students have often told me that the first edition of her book is easy to read." (Valerie A. Ubbes, Associate Professor 2006-03-13)"The book has plenty of practical, easy-to-employ, and effective ideas supported by research, and the sections are simple, yet powerful. The Wizdom sections really focus on some major ideas." (Kathy Tritz-Rhodes, Principal 2006-03-27)"An outstanding resource no teachers college or reference library should be without." So much current and practical material has been incorporated into this slim book, cleverly organized around the analogies of The Wizard of Oz. Marilee, as an experienced teacher who reads extensively, has the gift to select the essentials to provide an over-all introduction to "brain-based teaching". The Table of Contents will give a good idea of the scope of coverage: structure of the brain, dealing with stress, emotional growth, developmental cognitive skills, 5 kinds of memories, 8 intelligences, use of music, brain states, brain food, sleep, exercise, learning environment, learning styles, brain-based asesssment...Once the appetite is aroused by the introduction here, readers can move on to Eric Jensen's books, esp. "Brain-based Learning", "Different Brains, Different Learners". Jensen's recent books all have much better visual format, more sketches and pictures.(The "marshmallow experiments" on impulse control quoted by Goleman is also quoted here (p. 49). Various authors, e.g. John Gottman, have actually challenged the conclusions.)

14 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Valuable to all teachers By A Customer This slender book is packed with insight into brain research and how to use it to make learning easier and a more pleasant experience for the students and teacher. Sprenger covers safety issues, learning styles and how to change your teaching address them, the effects of stress and how to lesson it, physical needs of the brain, the different kinds of intelligence, and much more. The information is more accessible because much of it is presented as stories from the author's own classrooms and life.

The nineteenth century was Europe's colonial century. At the beginning of the period, the only colonial empire that existed was the British Empire. By the end of the century the situation was completely different and Europe's colonial possessions had come to constitute a large part of the world. The French had acquired an immense colonial empire and the Dutch had extended their control over Indonesia. Germany and Italy, unified only in the latter half of the century, had claimed their place under the sun. Even the tiny Kingdom of Belgium had acquired a huge colonial territory in Africa: the Belgian Congo.

This is the first book to describe the whole process of colonization from conquest to pacification, and to analyze it in the light of administrative, cultural and economic developments. The European Colonial Empires discusses a uniquely long period instead of merely focussing on the shorter, accepted age of classical imperialism. Wesseling argues that European colonial expansion can be understood only by putting it into this long-term perspective and by comparing the differences between the colonies in Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Caribbean.

This book redresses the balance that privileges the British colonial and imperial experience. It emphasizes the continental European experience while relating developments to the British enterprise.

Review

'Henk Wesseling has spent years leading one of the world's best historical research teams. But it is his personal touch that makes this work special. He combines all the qualities an historian needs to write a perfect book: a flawless sense of evidence, unfailing clarity of exposition, unerring judgement, free-wheeling breadth of culture, a talent for balancing narrative with analysis, and an enviable ability to cram comprehensive coverage into manageable space, without sacrifice of detail.

He also has an eye for vivid material, which can entertain as well as instruct and a subtle, endlessly enjoyable sense of humour enlivens his pages. No book on this subject unites so much material, on so many regions and empires, with greater dispassion, superior judgement, or equal command of the facts.'

Good book By Erik The author covers the period wherein European colonization reached it's peak. The French were building a huge colonial empire in Africa, The Dutch were extending there influence in Indonesia and the British were active on all continents. And also Portugal and some 'newcomers' had their overseas colonies.Wesseling is focusing on politics, wars and colonial systems. He has a very clear writing style what makes the book a good read. It's significant that the book is translated into six languages.....

Great Book By Gianpaolo Carpinito As a college student with a good background in history, I bought this book as a pleasure read to fill in the gap in understanding I had about European Imperialism. In practice, the book gives a sweeping history of colonial empires from the 16th century up to 1919. The broad scope of the text means that you should expect the most important facts concerning each topic but not an in depth narrative of colonial development in each region. On the whole, the book was very informative and met the author's professed goal of giving considerable attention to the colonial empires of European nations that are usually cast into the shadow of the British Empire. Still, some aspects were lacking. For example, there was nearly no focused discussion of Britain's most important colonial holdings -- India, Australia, and Canada being mentioned only in passing. Additionally, the book was scant on facts for political crises such as "The Great Game" and Anglo-French tensions in Indochina. On all other fronts, however, the author did a thorough job, giving strong summaries of the history of the rest of the colonial world in a somewhat detailed and very concise fashion.

Wesseling writes the book in a interesting manner. Its not boring. Its not overwhelming. It was a good choice for a reseach paper.

Tramp! tramp! tramp! he marched, whistling as he jogged along, though he carried a heavy musket over his shoulder and though the sun shone hot and strong and there was never a tree in sight to give him a bit of shelter. At last he came in sight of the King's Town and to a great field of stocks and stones, and there sat a little old man as withered and brown as a dead leaf, and clad all in scarlet from head to foot."Ho! soldier," said he, "are you a good shot?""Aye," said the soldier, "that is my trade.""Would you like to earn a dollar by shooting off your musket for me?""Aye," said the soldier, "that is my trade also.""Very well, then," said the little man in red, "here is a silver button to drop into your gun instead of a bullet. Wait you here, and about sunset there will come a great black bird flying. In one claw it carries a feather cap and in the other a round stone. Shoot me the silver button at that bird, and if your aim is good it will drop the feather cap and the pebble. Bring them to me to the great town-gate and I will pay you a dollar for your trouble.""Very well," said the soldier, "shooting my gun is a job that fits me like an old coat." So, down he sat and the old man went his way.Well, there he sat and sat and sat and sat until the sun touched the rim of the ground, and then, just as the old man said, there came flying a great black bird as silent as night. The soldier did not tarry to look or to think. As the bird flew by up came the gun to his shoulder, squint went his eye along the barrel--Puff! Bang!--I vow and declare that if the shot he fired had cracked the sky he could not have been more frightened. The great black bird gave a yell so terrible that it curdled the very blood in his veins and made his hair stand upon end. Away it flew like a flash--a bird no longer, but a great, black demon, smoking and smelling most horribly of brimstone, and when the soldier gathered his wits, there lay the feather cap and a little, round, black stone upon the ground."Well," said the soldier, "it is little wonder that the old man had no liking to shoot at such game as that." And thereupon he popped the feather cap into one pocket and the round stone into another, and shouldering his musket marched away until he reached the town-gate, and there was the old man waiting for him."Did you shoot the bird?" said he."I did," said the soldier."And did you get the cap and the round stone?""I did.""Then here is your dollar.""Wait a bit," said the soldier, "I shot greater game that time than I bargained for, and so it's ten dollars and not one you shall pay me before you lay finger upon the feather cap and the little stone.""Very well," said the old man, "here are ten dollars.""Ho! ho!" thought the soldier, "is that the way the wind blows?"--"Did I say ten dollars?" said he; "'Twas a hundred dollars I meant."At that the old man frowned until his eyes shone green. "Very well," said he, "if it is a hundred dollars you want, you will have to come home with me, for I have not so much with me." Thereupon he entered the town with the soldier at his heels.Up one street he went and down another, until at last he came to a great, black, ancient, ramshackle house; and that was where he lived. In he walked without so much as a rap at the door, and so led the way to a great room with furnaces and books and bottles and jars and dust and cobwebs, and three grinning skulls upon the mantelpiece, each with a candle stuck atop of it, and there he left the soldier while he went to get the hundred dollars. The soldier sat him down upon a three-legged stool in the corner and began staring about him; and he liked the looks of the place as little as any he had seen in all of his life, for it smelled musty and dusty, it did: the three skulls grinned at him, and he began to think that the little old man was no better than he should be. "I wish," said he, at last, "that instead of being here I might be well out of my scrape and in a safe place."Now the little old man in scarlet was a great magician, and there was little or nothing in that house that had not some magic about it, and of all things the three-legged stool had been conjured the most."I wish that instead of being here I might be well out of my scrape, and in a safe place." That was what the soldier said; and hardly had the words left his lips when--whisk! whir!--away flew the stool through the window, so suddenly that the soldier had only just time enough to grip it tight by the legs to save himself from falling. Whir! whiz!--away it flew like a bullet. Up and up it went--so high in the air that the earth below looked like a black blanket spread out in the night; and then down it came again, with the soldier still gripping tight to the legs, until at last it settled as light as a feather upon a balcony of the king's palace; and when the soldier caught his wind again he found himself without a hat, and with hardly any wits in his head. There he sat upon the stool for a long time without daring to move, for he did not know what might happen to him next. There he sat and sat, and by-and-by his ears got cold in the night air, and then he noticed for the first time that he had lost his head gear, and bethought himself of the feather cap in his pocket. So out he drew it and clapped it upon his head, and then--lo and behold!--he found he had become as invisible as thin air--not a shred or a hair of him could be seen. "Well!" said he, "here is another wonder, but I am safe now at any rate." And up he got to find some place not so cool as where he sat.He stepped in at an open window, and there he found himself in a beautiful room, hung with cloth of silver and blue, and with chairs and tables of white and gold; dozens and scores of waxlights shone like so many stars, and lit every crack and cranny as bright as day, and there at one end of the room upon a couch, with her eyelids closed and fast asleep, lay the prettiest princess that ever the sun shone upon. The soldier stood and looked and looked at her, and looked and looked at her, until his heart melted within him like soft butter, and then he kissed her."Who is that?" said the princess, starting up, wide-awake, but not a soul could she see, because the soldier had the feather cap upon his head."Who is that?" said she again; and then the soldier answered, but without taking the feather cap from his head."It is I," said he, "and I am King of the Wind, and ten times greater than the greatest of kings here below. One day I saw you walking in your garden and fell in love with you, and now I have come to ask you if you will marry me and be my wife?""But how can I marry you?" said the princess, "without seeing you?""You shall see me," said the soldier, "all in good time. Three days from now I will come again, and will show myself to you, but just now it cannot be. But if I come, will you marry me?""Yes I will," said the princess, "for I like the way you talk--that I do!"Thereupon the soldier kissed her and said good-bye, and then stepped out of the window as he had stepped in. He sat him down upon his three-legged stool. "I wish," said he, "to be carried to such and such a tavern." For he had been in that town before, and knew the places where good living was to be had.Whir! whiz! Away flew the stool as high and higher than it had flown before, and then down it came again, and down and down until it lit as light as a feather in the street before the tavern door. The soldier tucked his feather cap in his pocket, and the three-legged stool under his arm, and in he went and ordered a pot of beer and some white bread and cheese.Meantime, at the king's palace was such a gossiping and such a hubbub as had not been heard there for many a day; for the pretty princess was not slow in telling how the invisible King of the Wind had come and asked her to marry him; and some said it was true and some said it was not true, and everybody wondered and talked, and told their own notions of the matter. But all agreed that three days would show whether what had been told was true or no.As for the soldier, he knew no more how to do what he had promised to do than my grandmother's cat; for where was he to get clothes fine enough for the King of the Wind to wear? So there he sat on his three-legged stool thinking and thinking, and if he had known all that I know he would not have given two turns of his wit upon it. "I wish," said he, at last--"I wish that this stool could help me now as well as it can carry me through the sky. I wish," said he, "that I had a suit of clothes such as the King of the Wind might really wear."The wonders of the three-legged stool were wonders indeed!Hardly had the words left the soldier's lips when down came something tumbling about his ears from up in the air; and what should it be but just such a suit of clothes as he had in his mind--all crusted over with gold and silver and jewels."Well," said the soldier, as soon as he had got over his wonder again, "I would rather sit upon this stool than any I ever saw." And so would I, if I had been in his place, and had a few minutes to think of all that I wanted. So he found out the trick of the stool, and after that wishing and having were easy enough, and by the time the three days were ended the real King of the Wind himself could not have cut a finer figure. Then down sat the soldier upon his stool, and wished himself at the king's palace. Away he flew through the air, and by-and-by there he was, just where he had been before. He put his feather cap upon his head, and stepped in through the window, and there he found the princess with her father, the king, and her mother, the queen, and ...

Wyeth) but he also wrote several books, the best known is "Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates". This one is a collection of moralistic and didactic tales, told by stock fairy tale characters. Not especially bad, considering its age, but the Kindle edition does not have Pyle's illustrations, which redeems this and other of his collections.

Meet Kenneth Bracewell, a veteran who does not allow failure to be an option in his life regardless of the situation or environment he is in. A Veteran's Road to College Success is a story of conviction through society and service to others. During his senior year of high school, Kenneth's counselor told him that he was not bright enough to be a soldier in the United States Army. The negative comment meant nothing for the young man, who became an infantry soldier one year after the event took place. A unique inspirational story about an army infantry soldier leaving the service and entering college after returning back from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Kenneth shares with college students, veterans, military personnel, and everyone the story of how he earned two separate undergraduate degrees (associate's and bachelor's) in three years despite the stress and constant struggle that occurred in this challenging process with the post-9/11 GI Bill and life after combat. Returning from the Iraq War as an infantry soldier was enough for this young man. Regardless of the many setbacks and failures of being unemployed, the veteran remained on his own two feet and finished strong so he could provide for his family.

Esquivel I enjoyed reading Kenneth's new book and highly recommend it to all but especially veterans. It definitely identifies challenges that we all go through with college. His success shows a light at the end of the tunnel. College is not the easiest thing pursue especially coming out of the military. Not because we don't have the discipline to follow through with it, but the lack of drive to start or complete it. And it's amazing to see such a determined individual do so well. I applaud him for his achievement. I hope the readers go in with a open mind and a willingness to take in his experience and motivation to apply to their own life. Earning your degree can be done, and only you are going to determine your success.

By Doug Erlandson As a retired philosophy teacher with nearly thirty years of university and community college teaching experience, I wish Kenneth Bracewell's book had been written years earlier. I would have made it required reading for my students. From my nearly three decades of experience teaching in higher education, I can say with confidence that very few students display the ambition, dogged determination, and sheer willpower that he did in completing his college education in three years while at the same time working a 40-hour-per-week job and rearing a family. Undoubtedly the discipline he learned during his three plus years in the Army prepared him in part for his Herculean effort while in college. (My experience is that military veterans are typically more motivated than the average student. And they are certainly more polite. More often than not I was able to tell almost from the start of a class who the veterans were.) But to sustain the effort he did requires a set of character traits that were developing in him during his youth and stood him in good stead during the time he was in the Army as well as afterwards. The most amazing thing about his story is that, although clearly an intelligent person, there appears to be nothing intellectually exceptional about Ken Bracewell. Rather, his story is testimony to the fact that anyone who sets his or her mind and heart to achieving a goal and pursues that goal relentlessly can succeed. Although this is primarily his story, it is a story that has application to each one of us as we try to achieve our goals. While geared first and foremost to those going on to college after military service, its principles are applicable to everyone in all walks of life. Especially helpful is the last part of the book where he distills the principles he followed in a way that is easily transferable to the situations each one of us faces.I received an electronic copy of this book from the author in exchange for writing an honest review.

Initially I purchased the book as a gift, but found myself reading it because I became interested in Kenneth's story and ideas. One of the Army values is "Selfless Service". He certainly has given selfless service in this book because for only a few bucks you can gain a ton of valuable information that may change the course of your life. Don't hesitate to click the "BUY" button. It's well worth the money and easy to read!
