Clifton's Cafeteria it might just be the most famous restaurant in the history of L.A. The Golden Rule. That's what the place was all about. So everybody came. Clifford Clinton owned Clifton's all of 'em everything he did was about doin' unto others. Nobody goin' hungry on his watch. And when he saw corruption in his City of Angels, he went after it. He led a campaign to recall the Mayor. He cleaned up the town. His story is as good as it gets straight outta Raymond Chandler, only real Clifford Clinton's never-published story, and more stuff about L.A. you just won't believe.

Not enough on the history of the cafeteria and it's import to LA. Too much on the politics of LA in the old days. I may have not understood the nature of the book when I ordered it.

“In just a few dozen pages, this research-based book will inspire and help you to make your teaching more intentional, engaging, and effective. This concise guide synthesizes recent scholarship to provide practical advice that is accessible to everyone who teaches in higher education.” --Peter Felten , Assistant Provost for Teaching and Learning, Director, Center for Engaged Learning, and Professor of History, Elon University"This book achieves several important goals. First, it is indeed concise. This is a major service to teachers. The literature is large and continually growing, but the authors succeed in bringing it all together in a highly practical and accessible way. There are three chapters which not only provide theory, but also a wide range of approaches and examples for achieving deeper learning, using action centered pedagogy, and assessing the outcomes. It will be of great use to experts in the disciplines who are asked to teach, but have little or no knowledge of learning theory and teaching methods (which is most of us.)" --James Zull, Author, The Art of Changing the Brain: Enriching the Practice of Teaching by Exploring the Biology of Learning“What does this book do that is different from the other books about teaching and learning? Those of us who have ventured into the literature on teaching and learning know that, over the past two decades, it has become a discipline unto itself. The options and resources for improving one’s teaching sometime feel limitless and overwhelming, especially for faculty members who are busily engaged not only in teaching and service, but also in research and creative work. A Concise Guide reviews, condenses, and explains those theories and practices—allowing you, the reader, to efficiently and effectively engage with those ideas.” --Michael Reder, Director , Joy Shechtman Mankoff Faculty Center for Teaching & Learning, Connecticut CollegeThis concise guidebook is intended for faculty who are interested in engaging their students and developing deep and lasting learning, but do not have the time to immerse themselves in the scholarship of teaching and learning.Acknowledging the growing body of peer-reviewed literature on practices that can dramatically impact teaching, this intentionally brief book:* Summarizes recent research on six of the most compelling principles in learning and teaching* Describes their application to the college classroom* Presents teaching strategies that are based on pragmatic practices* Provides annotated bibliographies and important citations for faculty who want to explore thesetopics furtherThis guidebook begins with an overview of how we learn, covering such topics such as the distinction between expert and novice learners, memory, prior learning, and metacognition. The body of the book is divided into three main sections each of which includes teaching principles, applications, and related strategies – most of which can be implemented without extensive preparation. The applications sections present examples of practice across a diverse range of disciplines including the sciences, humanities, arts, and pre-professional programs. This book provides a foundation for the reader explore these approaches and methods in his or her teaching.

A Concise Guide to Improving Student Learning: Six Evidence-Based Principles and How to Apply Them, by Diane Cummings Persellin, Mary Blythe Daniels

Review "A Concise Guide to Improving Student Learning: Six Evidence-Based Principles and How to Apply Them offers educators at the college teaching levels specific ideas on how to apply theory to learning, and pairs a research-based book with a guide to advancing scholarship quality in higher education. Chapters are intended for faculty who want to engage their students, but have little time to study the process. Recent research findings are thus summarized, linked to college classroom applications and methods, and contrasted with teaching methods that have been used less successfully. Add in annotated bibliographies and citations and you have a fine guide educators will relish." (California Bookwatch)“In just a few dozen pages, this research-based book will inspire and help you to make your teaching more intentional, engaging, and effective. This concise guide synthesizes recent scholarship to provide practical advice that is accessible to everyone who teaches in higher education.” (Peter Felten)“You have in your hand, in one, compact package, a primer, a detailed guidebook to becoming a more effective teacher. In just sixty pages of main text you will find rich morsels, insights, and wisdom about approaches to improving student learning. Professors Persellin and Daniels have combed over and reviewed the best ideas about effective teaching and learning, straining them down to six, straightforward principles. What does this book do that is different from the other books about teaching and learning? Those of us who have ventured into the literature on teaching and learning know that, over the past two decades, it has become a discipline unto itself. The options and resources for improving one’s teaching sometime feel limitless and overwhelming, especially for faculty members who are busily engaged not only in teaching and service, but also in research and creative work. A Concise Guide reviews, condenses, and explains those theories and practices―allowing you, the reader, to efficiently and effectively engage with those ideas.” (Michael Reder, Director)"This is a valuable guide for college and university teachers of all levels of experience because it bridges the gap between what we know about students’ learning and how we teach. The book culls important research to offer up a concise set of evidence-based strategies teachers can put to use immediately to enhance students’ academic success." (Mary-Ann Winkelmes, Coordinator of Instructional Development and Research)"This book achieves several important goals. By mercedes I've already read this book because I was lucky enough to edit it:) yes, you can all hate meOkay, so this wonderful book is short & fun.The main character, Cecily, is spunky, fun & absolutely wonderful! She's strong, brave & definitely a great main character. Her counter part, Isaac, is sweet, caring & sometimes funny. He would do anything for Cecily, loves his family (even his evil brother) & is just a great guy. (Totally crush worthy)Isaac's older brother, Julian, is my definition of an amazing wet dream, lol. He's a total bad boy (with a small amount of good) he's loyal, trustworthy, and bossy. This book has romance, action, suspense & is really funny sometimes. This book starts with action & just doesn't stop till the very end. You'll lose sleep staying up to read it, I promise! I just finished it & I can not wait for the sequel! While you will have questions after, it just adds to the anticipation of the sequel.I truly loved editing & reading this novel & highly recommend it. I promise you won't be disappointed!

The Conclusion to the Storm Series is here! The last two weeks of my life have been a fairy tale. Coffee shop girl meets famous actor. Lots of kinky games ensue. Much fun and sex is had. But fairy tales have dark undertones. I am surrounded by a pack of baying paparazzi, hungry for their scoop. I huddle in my apartment. Tim Banks, my own personal Prince Charming, is flying back to Los Angeles in a few hours. Now I have to decide whether I trust enough in love to fight for him, or if it is best to just let him go.

By book worm At the end of book 4 Tessa was hold up in her book store hiding from the media circus out side of her pizza place .Tim was very worried about her and also trying to do all that he could to let her know he was there for her and that he had her back. When Tim saw that it was to much for Tessa with alittle help from her friends he created a diversion to get her out of the there. He sent her a text telling her to pack a bag and meet him out back he was taking her away. It was exactly what Tessa needed, for him to take control of the situation. Needless to say his diversionary tactics worked fabulously.Tessa was relieved to be getting away with him and needed this time, I think, to help her understand that Tim loved her and was putting his heart on the line and offering her everything in asking her to move to L.A. with him. He helped her to realize that she did have a set evacuation plan already set up for leaving Liverpool and were she ended up was only a formality but that he need her to except his environment to except him. By the time they had to leave she was sure that Tim loved her but still afraid to take a chance. Tim understands her completely and as much as it hurt him, He told her he would be waiting for her answer and the ball was in her court. He was completely vested in their relationship if she would take a chance on them. It took her a couple of months of deep soul searching and finding out that Tim was calling her best friend often to see how she was doing to finally make up her mind and her heart. This Story touched me in so many ways, after reading books 1-4 my heart was fully and irrevocably won over. I was so excited to read the culmination of this series but saddened on the same coin to see it end. what an excellent writer Tara Crescent is. I really hope that she will revisit this series in the future. I for one would love to know. What happens next??

There's a perfectly good reason for that - Tara Crescent had a lot to wrap up with this whirlwind romance and only one book to do it.I'm pleased to say that the conclusion to the storm series was absolutely beautiful. It was sweet, hot, heart-warming, and satisfying as all hell. When we left off in Tabloid Trouble, Tessa was cracking under the pressure of paparazzi and how quickly everything in her world had tipped on its side.. And all due to one guy... Ok, so he's like the most perfect guy in all of existence... But still...Tessa doesn't want to spend her entire life wondering "what If...?", but she's a realist. She's just a regular girl living a quiet (if lonely) life. She never wanted to be famous. The only time she's ever wanted to be the center of attention is when she has Tim all alone and naked. She's not cut out for the media circus...But that's the life that Timothy Banks leads...Filming is wrapping up and he'll be returning to LA - all the way across the continent - their relationship is in its infancy; there's no way it can survive long-distance.They have one more weekend together.Forty-eight hours to determine if what's between them is more than just sex...Two days to figure out how to spend the rest of their lives...I smiled,I laughed,I swooned,I squirmed...I LOVED IT!

By Lissa I received this boxed set for an honest review.Tessa is a girl who's hiding from life while pretending to be content running her coffee/pizza shop in the small town of Liverpool, Nova Scotia. When a movie comes into town with heartthrob Timothy Banks as it's lead her whole life gets turned upside down when she finds herself letting Tim in from the cold during a storm. She's instantly attracted to him but is surprised to see an answering attraction in his eyes. She knows that all they can be his a hot fling but after his dominance in the bedroom gets her blood pumping she's ready to jump in punishments and all! Is their chemistry purely physical? Are they just what each other needs to heal the heartache they've both been through?I really enjoyed this series, I think at some point in our life we've all runaway in one form or another and found ourselves in Tessa's position of wondering what's next for us in life. I found her to be extremely relatable as well as sarcastically hilarious...my favorite type of funny! He's hot and dominant but sweet and caring with his own set of baggage. Together they're HOT and the sexy scenes do no disappoint but this book did a great job of balancing the story with the steamy BDSM scenes. I am glad that I read this as set though as it's a series so each episode is not a stand alone and by reading it all at once I got the complete story. Download this set as soon as it's available you won't be disappointed!

The Court Singer is Part One of A Year and a Day, the delightful retelling of the classic story of Thomas the Rhymer, a 13th-century Scottish harper, singer, troubadour—who has a life-changing encounter with none other than The Queen of Faerie. The Court Singer moves its main character, a man called Thomas Lear, from the pages of that myth and into the American Pop Music scene in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s.

It's so refreshing to find a book that taps into the desires we all have to hear (or read) a good old-fashioned tale of magic and wonder. I'll admit I'm not always a fan of our "hero," Thomas... but that's okay, because no one is perfect, and that makes him all the more real. More importantly, I want to know what happens to him - which is really the point, right? There's a touch of nostalgia for the "good old days" of rock and roll, intermingled with dreams and love... and yowsah, steamy sex! I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next!

However, I was fortunate that my wife suggested I read it; I am really thankful for her recommendation. The story pulled me in from the beginning, and kept me guessing as to where it would take me. Now that I am finished, I look forward to the next book. Lisa's writing is very creative and enjoyable to read. I would definitely recommend this book.

Lisa Courtney’s protagonist in The Court Singer sweeps you off your feet. His adventure is totally credible, and you just go with him. The Folk he meets, and the woman he loves, and the things he does for his year and a day give you a totally perfect escape. I’m going to read it again while I wait for the second book to come out. This is good!

On the cusp of his senior year at Mercy High, Elliot Donahey, an out but terminally shy gay young man who keeps to the shadows – never wanting to be seen or noticed – suddenly finds himself in the arms of the highest profile jock on campus, local star quarterback, Marco Sforza. Their lives, and those closest to them will never be the same.

Set against the backdrop of competitive sports, this character study work (the first in a series) deep dives into the lives of these young men who each must "play the game" so Marco can play the game he loves. They are just trying to find some small slice of happiness to call their own amidst their hellish final year of high school.

Author's Note: Angels of Mercy is first and foremost, a character study. A great deal of it is inner-monologue. Elliot will pause the action, will break momentum as he grapples with his world – all the while flipping a finger to the fourth wall. He knows you're there. It was far more important to me as its author (and a gay man) that the reader come away with the whys of Elliot’s choices in how he navigates his often tumultuous world. The same can be said of Marco (his jock boyfriend) who will have his own line of books covering the same timeline but from his POV (the first, Diary of a Quarterback Part 1, due winter 2015).

I’ve read much queer literature and what I find rather interesting is that for the majority of it, very little is written about the character’s headspace. When you live in a world where you constantly have to be vigilant as you navigate through, it can make for some very powerful storytelling. That is my goal in writing these boys’ lives. I want the reader who may not be queer themselves to come away with what it might be like to be in a gayboy’s shoes – constantly polling and pulse-checking your world because your very survival depends upon it. All of that while you hope, you secretly pray, that you’ll find someone who will see you too and find they can’t live without you in their world. A small slice of happiness to call your own. And though you do everything to keep to yourself, you may still run into those who find your very existence threatens who they are and how they think the world should run. I pull no punches with this work. They are hormonally charged eighteen year old young men who are sexually active. While the sex is present in the work it is not gratuitous in that the main character does evolve from his physical intimacy with his high-profile boyfriend. It is not a genre romance read either, though it has a very strong romance threaded in the work. These elements bring a light to their world that attracts all the wrong attention.

In a time where more queer youth are coming out to their teammates and their loved ones, I find that work of this nature is both timely and necessary to tell. I hope you'll find it as interesting and provocative a read as I believe it is.

Our Voices. Our Lives - as we live them.

Angels of Mercy - Volume One: Elliot: His Summer of Love (Volume 1), by S A Collins

Review Angels of Mercy - Volume 1: Elliot is an exceptional display of walking in Elliot's shoes - a diary of sorts. Being a teenager is hard enough, being gay in a small town and in love with the star quarterback can be dangerous.  Sensual and sarcastic conversations and inward monologues bring life, laughter, disappointments, danger, and a carnal love to Elliot and Marco.  But, will it last? - Saguaro Moon Reviews [4 out of 5 Moons] Kindle edition reviewed

About the Author SA Collins hails from the San Francisco Bay Area where he lives with his (legal) husband, their daughter and wonder of all wonders, a whirlwind of a granddaughter. A classically trained singer/actor (under a different name), Mr. Collins knows a good yarn when he sees it. Mr. Collins specializes in character study work. It is more important for him as an author that the reader comes away with a greater understanding of the characters, and the reasons they make the decisions they do, rather than the situations they are in. It is this deep dive into their manners, their experiences and how they process the world around them that make up the body of Mr. Collins' work.

He has learned over time that it's easier to hide in the shadows than deal with the bullies. When not at school, he is busy working at his family's restaurant. One afternoon, Elliott is taken by surprise when the door to the restaurant dings and in walks Marco, the guy he has crushed on for years. When Marco admits that he is there to see him and that he wants Elliot to go out with him, he knows it has to be a joke. Why else would the star quarterback try this.Marco is determined to convince Elliott that this is real. When Elliot decides to give Marco a chance, their love story unfolds. They are sweet, loving and devoted to one another. However, being gay and sports don't mix real well. Therefore, they decide that they need to hide their relationship till football season is over. This isn't a simple task. Can two people from two different worlds come together without any fall out? Is their love strong enough to survive?I really enjoyed Angels of Mercy: Volume One. I like that it was a longer novel. It wasn't rushed nor did it feel like it was dragging on. I loved seeing these two boys' relationship grow. Elliot accepted he is gay a long time ago, but it wasn't until Marco that he was able to open his eyes to see how truly beautiful he is. I loved how Elliot is Marco's world. Marco would walk through fire to keep what they have. This does end in a cliffhanger like we are warned in the synopsis. Good news is book 2 is already out, so like me you can continue on without pause. If you like a mm love story that centers around football and has real life obstacles to conquer then Angels of Mercy by SA Collins is a must read.A complimentary copy was given in exchange for honest review

Rated 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.)I asked to review this book after having read some of the reviews for it on both Amazon and Goodreads. I’m a fan of long books, and thought this might just fit the bill for me. It did, and it didn’t. Let me explain.I really enjoyed the story of Elliot and Marco in some respects. In other respects I didn’t like it at all. The author did a fantastic job at making me like the character of Elliot and also making me LOATHE his character as well. There was a point at roughly 60-65% that I almost decided to take a “did not complete” because of some things Elliot did, or didn’t do as the case might be.Elliot Donahey, is a high school senior, working at the family owned Dairy Queen, which he affectionately refers to as “the Q”. Business hasn’t been very good, and they are struggling to stay in business with little or no customers. Then one day while Elliot is there by himself, the school quarterback hunk, Marco Sforza, comes in and confesses his undying love to Elliot. Turns out he has been stalking Elliot for two years getting up his courage to approach him. Yeah…I didn’t get the realism there either. From there the two guys enter into a relationship…with lots of sex…but hidden from the world. There is some insta-love (in my opinion the stalking time doesn’t count) and all of sudden they are in love, promising to marry each other and live happily ever after. Well…if they can avoid the school bullies. One issue I had with them was sometimes they acted like they were in their mid-twenties and other times they acted like they were twelve. Never did it feel like two eighteen year old high school seniors. There was a lot of angst, and a lot of second guessing himself on Elliot’s part which, while good in the beginning, began to wear on me until as I mentioned above, I almost quit reading.I wanted so much to love this book, but I’ve got to be honest. It was one of the longest reads I’ve had in years. It took me what felt like forever to plod through it. I liked the story, but it could have been far, far better with several thousand less words. At times the story seemed to repeat itself, and there was so much detail and minutiae between actions that I sometimes forgot where I was and would have to flip back a few pages. There is also a twist in the story with a mysterious guy, named “Angelo”, who shows up once in a while that I figured out before the end of the book, when something happened that totally infuriated me.I have book two in the series, but I’m not sure I’ll read it right away, mainly because of the “Angelo” twist which I’m still stewing about….who does that??? Book two is 700+ pages, which is too much for my schedule right now anyway. And if I’m being honest, I wasn’t like “oh I’ve got to read the next book” when I finished this one. The author’s writing is above average and the story was good, but even the dramatic cliffhanger isn’t really enough to make me grab book two right now.

Angel of Mercy By Paul Berry Angels Of Mercy-Volume One-Elliot by SA CollinsElliot a shy guy at Mercy high is out for all intents purposes but he prefers being in the background that is until he meets Marco, the star quarterback and nothing will ever be the same for either boys again. When Marco makes a play for Elliot and to see his reaction was so funny that this hot quarterback is actually coming onto him was some of the greatest scenes to read. Marco is so persistent and nothing will keep him from the guy he loves even though the object of his attention is having a hard time excepting Marcos love. When Elliot finally gives into the quarterback is when things really start to heat up and the beautiful connection between these guys is something so very special. The relationship starts off and Marco needs to stay in the closet for the time being and Elliott needs to find where he fits into is quarterbacks life.I really enjoyed these characters, Elliot knows who he is and owns his sexuality and even though he might be shy it's very clear how he's accepted being gay. What really spoke to me was how Marco the hot quarterback liked and went after Elliot. They look like they come from different worlds which they actually are but Marcos attraction to Elliot is so intense that I found myself rooting for them right from the start.Just loved the self discovery journey that Elliot and Marco took and the great love that they found along the way. The way the author grows these characters together in such a beautiful story was some great writing. I felt connected right away to the great story that these men shared. I quite enjoyed this novel as the setting was so rich and the characters were so well written in depths of pure true honesty. I'm a huge fan of sport genres and was a beautiful setting of true gay romance and what the price of love actually costs. I found the pages flowed beautifully and the author captured their love so brilliantly that I found myself lost in their love. The author was highly detailed in creating this type of story and the characters were developed beautifully. I'm looking forward to reviewing the entire series and I highly recommend Angels Of Mercy: Volume One-Elliot to anyone who loves reading a great true gay romance novel."Complimentary copy provided by author/publisher for an honest review."Reviewed by Paul at Gay Media Reviews

Brown’s latest novel, The Arrangment, book five of her Galveston:1900 Indignities Series, will again fall in love with Catherine Matthews. She has graduated from Galveston Medical School and has moved to Rosenberg, Texas, with her husband Trent and her children from a previous marriage. The two lovers have begun a new life, the kind that Catherine has always dreamed of having – a home filled with love and laughter. Both are excited as they await the birth of their first child. In addition to living in a family-centered neighborhood, they are privileged in that they are able to afford a maid/nurse/baby sitter as well as a French cook named Martin Boudreaux. Their lives appear perfect. But appearances can be deceptive. Just when everything is going well, tragedy strikes. Someone kidnaps their three-month-old son.The stress of not knowing how to cope with the loss of the baby takes its toll on their marriage, but Catherine’s faith is strong as she and Trent, along with the judicial authorities, try to locate their son and try to mete out justice on the culprit(s) responsible for such a dastardly deed.Just as Catherine and Trent are unable to rest, the reader, too, will be unable to sleep or carry o n a normal routine until the last word on the last page has been read.
