NEW FIRST EDITON, SECOND PRINTING (ver.2) This emotional and compelling story brings us together with two men from different backgrounds, who search together for happiness and their place in the world in the aftermath of the Civil War. Entwined in the history of the early Antebellum period, the Civil War and Reconstruction periods and the aftermath, it traces the lives of Josiah Ashford, a slave from Mississippi and David Wexley, a Union soldier from Maryland with a passion for social justice who charged naively into war to fight cruel injustice and authority. The story will resonate in the hearts and minds of anyone who believes that there is always hope in the darkest of times. Josiah Ashford struggled through his early life as a slave in Missouri and Savannah Oaks plantation near Natchez, Mississippi. Marcus Taylor grew up in Savannah, Georgia as a privileged dilettante. Rebecca Stanley from Charleston desired a grand life full of refinement and social graces. David Wexley sailed the Atlantic coast in topsail schooners as a merchant marine, wrote in a journal sad lonely private thoughts, was impassioned for social justice and charged naively into war with young friends to fight cruel injustice and authority. This historical fiction novel traces the lives of two generations of fictional characters through the early antebellum period, the Civil War and Reconstruction periods and its aftermath, while they struggled and prevailed through their tumultuous historical period. It ends around 1900. The characters resonate with thoughts and feelings we all share today - frustration, hopelessness, loneliness, spiritual longing, friendship, and love.

The story and the characters are just enough that you can use your own imagination which I love...not overly descriptive so you are skipping through. Love the little history thrown in to fully understand what was going on in that time of America.

Some say it's magic, some say it's love. Others credit the sea, sun and sand as the healing power behind Sea View House. Dow the truth really matter for the temporary residents of this special place? In the coastal town of Pilgrim Cove, strangers are welcomed, and everyone else takes a front seat as a love story unfolds. The Sea View House series begins with Her Long Walk Home: Rebecca Hart has her life together -- great job, great friends and ready to run the Boston marathon. Then her life turns in an instant when she's injured in the bombing. Single dad and veterinarian, Adam Fielding, intends to remain a bachelor after being "abandoned" twice. Once by the love of his life and once by a second-best girlfriend. When Rebecca arrives at Sea View House to recover, neither she nor Adam is prepared to let the magic of the place affect them. Will these two open their hearts and run toward a new finish line together?

Belsha I love the other stories about Pilgrim Cove and the people who live and are drawn into the life and love of the community. This one touches the heart and works as well on its' own as it does as a continuation of previous books. Strong characters, an interesting storyline and a heroine you'll actively root for all combine to ring very true in a tale of restoration and finding home and love. Cannot say enough about Linda Barrett's books - each one takes you away, teaches you things and helps you appreciate the special things in your own life. Just finished Her Picture Perfect Family and can't wait for Book 3 in December!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Just mediocre By M Segan This book was just OK. The characters felt one dimensional and the idea behind the plot was great but never really blossomed for me. There was too much internal dialogue and not enough actual conversation between the characters to make me really invest in the romance. And while Sara was adorable, I have a 10 year old daughter and she sounds nothing like her. Sara was more like a 5 year old. Sorry to say it, but this book was just mediocre for me.

By Nancy Polikoff "Her Long Walk Home" is the heartwarming story of Rebecca Hart who was injured in the Boston Marathon Bombing. (Timing of the release of this book coincided with the trial of the accused bomber). Rebecca arrives at Pilgrim Cove and finds healing and love. This is the story of good people who have had bad things happen to them and how they can learn to live and love again. I like the cast of characters of Pilgrim Cove and how they come together to help others. This was an enjoyable read. Love this author.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Unusually wonderful! By ~Cerys This was definitely an interesting book!I've read quite a few books by Dawn Steele now, so I knew a little of what to expect, but I was intrigued by the um... menage+ aspect to this one? I have no idea what that would even be called, lol. Love square?Anyways! The idea was interesting and I liked the premise, and I was interested in finding out just what this paranormal stuff was all about with this one.And... I really enjoyed it a lot. Anne was a fun character, and this book had a lot of the sass and humor that I've come to expect from Dawn Steele books. Along with that, Channing, Stephen, and Henry were great characters, too. It took a bit getting used to the idea of three men instead of the usual one or two, but in the end I liked it, and the secret parts and hidden twists and turns to the story made it even more interesting. I don't want to spoil too much there, so I'll just leave it at that, but I think you'll really enjoy what this story has in store for you.Overall, a really great book, but I've loved all of Dawn Steele's books so far, so I've come to expect the best from her! If you'd like a paranormal romance with a bit of an unusual twist, I'd highly recommend this one.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Garbage By Dark Lolita ok so I don't usually write reviews unless their really good or bad and well... this one was bad :( First off let me say that the premise was an interesting idea and I do like her taste in men but that was about it. I can tell she's a fan of "Parks and Recreation" because the leading lady's name is Ann Perkins. lol And she's also a fan of Channing Tatum cuz surprise channing is one of the guys names lol Secondly because idk if the writer got antsy to finish the book or she just stopped caring but the final (and only)sex scene and ending were pretty gay and on the retarded side. The guys were more interested in completing their coven and living rather than actually feeling something serious for Ann. There was zero chemistry! and my biggest gripe was this chick was NOT (ONCE AGAIN) A BBW! being 20 lbs overweight and a size 16 is NOT PLUS SIZE!!!!!! I don't get why they keep labeling it bbw and these stories are by women! I know these stories are works of fiction but if you want to attract a certain audience then by God you better get your facts straight and DELIVER!! I'm so glad I didn''t waste my money on this and I would highly recommend you waste time doing something else.oh and P.S. it's not sexy when you're writting a menage story and the chick acts scared like she's going to be raped.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Three Men and a Curvy Woman By RebeccaReads His, His and His is a hot paranormal menage story about a curvy young woman who takes an internship at a firm run by three gorgeous men--Channing, Stephen, and Henry. And do they have plans for her! Anne believes that she will one day find her one true mate, but the fun really starts when she learns she is fated to take on three! Delicious...love these guys.

In that stately Fitzrovia house, the butler was murdered by a disgruntled pantry boy; in that one, a king's housekeeper lost her life. In that Kensington flat, a demented playboy murdered a prostitute for kicks; in that Gloucester Road basement, 'Acid Bath' Haigh was busy digesting the bodies of his victims. In those two elegant Chelsea houses, located in peaceful garden squares, a clergyman and his housekeeper were brutally done to death in 1870. In that peaceful little house, not far from Camden Road Station, a woman murdered her rival, dismembered the body, and disposed of it using an old-fashioned perambulator. In that peaceful pub near the Thames, the landlady was murdered in 1920, and the killer was never found. In one Islington house, George Joseph Smith disposed of one of his 'Brides in the Bath'; in another, Annie Walters, the notorious baby farmer, was plying her deadly trade; in a third, a brilliant playwright was brutally murdered by his homosexual lover. This book deals with central London's architecture of capital crime: houses inside which celebrated murders have been committed. Pursue Lord Lucan as he escapes from his elegant Belgravia house, leaving the dead nanny in the basement; prowl the Soho streets once haunted by an elusive serial killer; and follow in the murderous footsteps of the Blackout Ripper and the serial killer Patrick Mackay. And read about London's many forgotten murders, where only the murder houses remain to tell a tale.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Design your own London Murder House Tour By Lisa Ahlstedt As a frequent visitor to London, I'm always drawn to places that are somewhat off the beaten tourist track. Since London has long been a destination for many people from all walks of life, inevitably there have been some gruesome and shocking crimes that have taken place there. Author Jan Bondeson takes a look at the places that have been the scenes of murders most foul in the capital city over the past 200 or so years. Interestingly, in this book, he concentrates of places that the, ahem, student of crime can still visit. He's put in a great deal of detective work to find the locations of crimes where streets have been renamed, houses renumbered, and various building projects have rendered the locations all but unrecognizable. Still, if you want to see where John George Haigh dissolved his victims in acid, or where George Joseph Smith dispatched some of his "brides in the bath," this is an indispensable guide! The book is divided into sections based on areas of London: Westminster, Kensington, Islington, Chelsea and Fulham, etc. and then arranged chronologically. Many famous cases are covered, as well as ones that I'd never heard of before. While many of the crimes were "solved" (well, someone was arrested, tried and frequently hanged although their guilt may be in question), there are also many cases that remain unsolved to this day. I was especially intrigued to learn that the street where I stay on my visits to London, Cartwright Gardens, was the site of two unsolved murders in the 1800s. The houses are long since gone, so one can hope that the ghosts of the victims have also departed the area! The book contained a great deal of historical information and many cases that are probably not well-known among the general public. There are many illustrations scattered throughout the book, both black and white pages (mostly from the Illustrated Police News), black and white contemporary photographs, and color pages of what the notorious houses look like today (which I'm sure the current owners greatly appreciate!).The only slight quibble I have with the book is the tendency for some repetitive language. The phrase "things weren't looking too good for" defendants in murder trials is used multiple times, as is the habit of calling suspects a "cove." Still, if you are discussing murders, suspects and trials, I guess there are only so many ways to say the same thing.I think anyone with an interest in London history or true crime would enjoy this book. I especially enjoyed the many illustrations from the sadly defunct Illustrated Police News, particularly the startled expressions and wild gestures of those who found the murder victims. If you've already visited London and been on one of the many Jack the Ripper or ghosts tours, this book provides ample information for you to design your own "murder house tour" on your next visit!

Within days of Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait, the far reaching arm of American airpower sprang into action. The skyscapes of the North Atlantic, Europe, and the Mediterranean became laced with the contrails of great jets flowing day and night toward the Persian Gulf. From the skies, manpower and material poured onto the bleak sands under the ominous clouds of the gathering storm, and in only a few weeks the size of the effort eclipsed that of the Berlin Airlift.

The thousands of crewmembers flying the jets, as well as those servicing and managing them, became the backbone of history’s largest air logistical operation. Many of these men and women were Air Force reservists, and the author participated as a pilot of a C-141B Starlifter with the Mississippi Air National Guard.Cockrell writes lyrically about flying and about the emotional and intellectual satisfaction enjoyed by those who fly. His focus is on the people recalled to active duty, who flew thousands of hours, coping with fatigue, cracked wings, missile attacks, and, in some cases, deteriorating businesses and families at home. Tail of the Storm gives expression to their love of flight, as well as their dedication to the endangered values of duty, honor, country. This story is good reading—not only for those who share the author’s enthusiasm for flying but also for those who read for pleasure and have a curiosity about a pilot’s world.

Tail of the Storm: Flying Missions in the First Gulf War, by Alan Cockrell

Review

“Cockrell captures the essence of the love affair for flying which inspires many military aviators. He conveys the humor, repartee, and camaraderie shared by Air Force aircrews in a way I found both accurate and entertaining. An outstanding work.” —Robert J. Jakeman, Auburn University

From the Back Cover Within days of Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, the far-reaching arm of American airpower sprang into action. Cockrell writes lyrically about flying, and about the emotional and intellectual satisfaction enjoyed by those who fly. His focus is on the people recalled to active duty, who flew thousands of hours, coping with fatigue, cracked wings, missile attacks, and, in some cases, deteriorating businesses and families at home.

About the Author Alan Cockrell is a commercial airline pilot. He spent twenty years in the Air Force, the Reserve, and the Air Guard. During the Persian Gulf War he logged almost 1,000 hours as a C-141 aircraft commander. He resides in Huntsville, Alabama.

It ranks with Fate is the Hunter, Dust on the Sea, and Yeager in my library. Nothing beats a well written book by a fellow that has "been there" and "done that". Alan tells a great story about a great airplane. If you are capable of getting misty-eyed about an airplane...the '141 is your airplane. It was a faithful and capable bird that we rode hard....real hard. Desert Shield/Storm brought the curtain down and off to DM they went.Alan's book will leave you thirsting for more. My I suggest [...] and Heavy Jets by Jim Miller. A tip of the hat to Alan and all the crewdogs...from "Old Shakey" to the '17...men and machines getting the mission accomplished.

Alan Cockrell shares in the telling of his personal experience in the first Gulf War. It gave me immense pleasure recounting the tales of the 172 Airlift Wing and of the "crew dogs" of 183 Airlift Squadron. It was real, It happened, and it will be fondly remembered.TSGT. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The words of a true prophet By Guardian of the Scales It will strike the reflective mind with some surprise that this classic piece of Victorian sagacity from the year 1850, a milestone in socio-moral analysis, is not better known to the modern reader. Carlyle was the last great prophet of the Western tradition, who looked at the atheistic, money-grabbing, materialistic society around him, enthralled to such cants as utilitarianism and other materialist philosophies, and felt himself compelled to protest in the strongest possible terms about the moral dung-heap the world had become. He called for a complete overhaul of the system of government - of democracy he had seen quite enough. Democracy does not cause the wisest to be given power, but the talking-machine, the man dedicated not to wisdom but to the sham of wisdom, to all the arts of popularity and stump-oratory. Better far to cultivate the greatest virtue, Silence. The Talker is insincere, much given to cant and flummery. He has departed from the Eternal Laws of the Universe, and so has the society which has produced him, and of which he is the emblem.Carlyle called for the Organization of Labour, so in some respects one could perhaps call him a socialist, and, indeed, earlier works by Carlyle were favourably reviewed by Engels. Where Carlye differed from socialism was in that this organization was to be under the control of the wisest or ablest men, who were to reign tyranically, but with God's justice in their hearts. This was especially urgently required in the light of the Europe-wide revolutions of 1848. This year was not a glorious one in European history, said Mr C - quite the contrary, indeed! As he wrote on the first Pamphlet that makes up this collection, called "The Modern Age":[W]e had the year 1848, one of the most singular, disastrous, amazing, and, on the whole, humiliating years the European world ever saw. Not since the irruption of the Northern Barbarians has there been the like. Everywhere immeasurable Democracy rose monstrous, loud, blatant, inarticulate as the voice of Chaos. Everywhere the Official holy-of-holies was scandalously laid bare to dogs and the profaneQuite so. Alas that this benighted age has not its own Thomas Carlyle to declaim such great truths from on high. Not only that, but we neglect even to read the man himself, as though his prophecies did not hold good for our own age! This foolishness must end, as an offense against the Eternal Verities of the Universe. There is only one Sage, and this is he, fittingly reverenced by many in his own time (Charles Dickens for example called him "the man who knows everything", and also said "I would go farther to see Carlyle than any man living". His Hard Times is also inscribed "To Thomas Carlyle"), shamefully neglected in ours - I say shamefully, yet also dangerously, catastrophically, for his lessons are the lessons of the universe, if we could but read it aright. He, taking up where his hero Goethe left off, read the open secret of the universe, and set it down for us - find a wiser than thee, and reverence him, for he is wise, and thou art a blockhead. In this we have the essence of Carlyle, and let us not forget it.This edition has only the first 5 of the 8 pamphlets that Carlyle issued monthly during 1850. This incompleteness seems to be common to many editions, for reasons I'm unsure of. It's not easy to get all 8. On original publication, the Latter-Day Pamphlets met with some disfavour; his biographer Froude said they caused "universal offence". Yet some there were to hear their message, and Carlyle's reputation survived this offence. To our day, they are still more relevant, for what does our age lack more than Obedience, the first of all virtues? As Carlyle said elsewhere, "[A]ll men, and especially all women, are born worshippers, and will worship, if it be but possible." Consider this well, O foolish Reader, till the meaning of it begins to make itself felt, even to thy poor, faithless head.
