Most people are unable to comprehend the enormous magnitude of the Great Lakes, thinking of them as "just lakes." That they are not. They are more appropriately thought of as "inland seas." Collectively, they cover an area of approximately 800 miles from east to west and 500 miles north to south; they contain 21% of the world's surface fresh water. Storms on the Great Lakes are every bit as powerful as storms on the world's oceans. Storms with winds up to 60 miles per hour and waves up to 20 feet in height are not uncommon. Unlike on the oceans, however, mariners on the Great Lakes have little room in which to maneuver, and shipwrecks have been a common occurrence. Most people also have no idea of the frequency of shipwrecks on the Great Lakes, estimating them at 100 - 500 over the years rather than the actual number of 6000+ with the loss of 30,000+ lives. This book puts those numbers into perspective and provides an up-close and in-depth account of eleven of those wrecks.

The highest guess was a few hundred By FRG I've been reading a chapter or two a day during my vacation on Lake Michigan this summer. This is a complete mind-blower, giving a much deeper appreciation of what it has taken to be a ship captain on Lake Michigan, particularly in November and December - the most dangerous storm window. I asked my family to guess how many shipwrecks there had been on the great lakes. The highest guess was a few hundred. Ritchey reveals that over 6000 ships have gone down! 20 foot waves, sleet and snow...makes you want to stay on shore! This book is a well-researched and excellently written account, without hyperbole, but loaded with fascinating stories and data. Fall's coming. LIght a fire in the hearth as your storms begin and curl up with this wonderful book!

I have always had a huge respect for the sea and love it's beauty and power. Mr. Ritchey's book, "Tales From The Depths", more than confirms my sentiments. He sets up each adventure with weather conditions, ship specifications, and qualifications of the crew and captain involved. His writing sets the imagination in a whirlwind of awe, shock and sometimes heart pounding awareness of the day's events leading up to the inevitable.I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down and strongly recommend others to pick it up.It' a great read.

I have over the year read about the world oceans and only recently discovered how much of the United States and Canadian history is affected by events involve the Great Lakes. The lakes provided the roadway to explore, settle and collect raw material so far into a wilderness that had no other access for two hundred plus years. Tales from the Depths is a very well written book that explains the Great Lake area's extreme weather, the amazing people and ships that called them home. The stories and pictures provide a personal image while you read about the events, you can imagine having the wind and mist blowing in your face on the deck of a ship and wonder what would you do in the same situation; Great maritime historic stories with the personal touch.

However, these are not identical twins, Talara is good and Alaris is evil. In order to end the evil borne of Alaris, she is forever stopped from bearing children, which makes her crave power and a deep jealousy ensues over Talara's abilities and gifts, most prized, the gift of bearing children.Another world exists, the mortal or human world and as years' passed the human world believed the Fae to be mere folklore. Now in 1403 in the village of Ferryden, we meet two children embarking on their youth, Galen and Ella whom have been friends from the time they were wee tots. However, she finds herself falling for the dashing, protective and loving Galen... it is through reading to her that he awakens the soft spirit within her. Galen too finds himself falling for the wee lass...More journey's and dangers lie ahead for these two lovers... will Ella stay with Galen or return to the land of the Fae? Meant to be together but torn apart by magic they finally meet again only don't know who each other is. When the time comes for Ella to realize who she is, can she leave the fae world the way it is or will she go to her true love from childhood? A MUST read, very well written, characters are amazing. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Teaser of What We Are Missing By PZGREN Great but much too short read. The greatest missing account of WWII is an English translation of General Balck's memoirs (that and continuing access to Russian archives -- tightly controlled again by the Putin-Medvedev governments after a short honeymoon in the 90s). This pamphlet is a teaser of the General's pithy, 'no time for idiots and failures' approach to warfare and the German High Command of WWII. Excellent, scathing reviews of some personalities -- even Guderian -- obviously admired by Balck -- gets an unvarnished review. A must read -- until someone ponies up to translate the full memoirs.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Unbelievable historical perspective, both because of the late date ... By Mac Timred Unbelievable historical perspective, both because of the late date (1970s) at which point the interviewee's perspectives on the war and his experiences would have matured, and because of the unbelievable qualifications and experience of the interviewee. In my opinion if Germany had lasted a few more months, General Balck was the next Field Marshal.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Anyone interested in this general is a must read. By Scott Bailey Very good interview with this famous german gerneral from WW2. Did not agree with all the answer that this general gave but it was interesting to read his answers on certain subject. Having read about the russian front and the war in hungary, this general is often mentioned and having not seen anything written from this general before it gives an idea about his style of leadership. Easy to follow and read plus a quick bio on this general in the begining of the book.

Parenting and education are hard, and little frustrates an authority more than a child who refuses or seems unable to pay attention. In the face of this frustration, some parents resort to counseling and even medication. Yet Scripture offers proven counsel for parents to implement into their homes. Teaching a Child to Pay Attention compassionately examines this problem from a biblical perspective. Building on his first book, The Truth about ADHD: Genuine Hope and Biblical Answers, Dr. Berger shows that problems with attention are not specific to children diagnosed as having ADHD rather these problems are universal: all children must be taught to pay attention rightly. This premise, along with the belief that the Scriptures addresses the child's education, provides the framework for the solution. These two ideas make this book, like the first one, a no-nonsense yet compassionate guide to genuine hope for frustrated parents. It offers parents and teachers a step-by-step plan from Proverbs for teaching a child to pay attention rightly and helping them to succeed.

Almost Anastasia tells the story of Franziska Schanzkowsky, the former factory worker who convinced royals, courtiers, and forensic experts that she was actually the Grand Duchess Anastasia, daughter of Nicholas II and sole survivor of the 1918 massacre at Ekaterinburg. DNA analysis has established who she really was, but once that mystery was solved the real mystery began—how did she do it? Why did she do it? What would it be like to step into someone else's life and live it forever? A work of narrative nonfiction drawn from original documents (some never before translated into English) and interviews with the people who knew her, Almost Anastasia follows Franziska from the streets of Berlin to the castles of deposed royalty, from Jazz Age New York to Nazi Germany and beyond. It is a tale of mystique, madness, and one woman’s determination to fool the world.

Seemingly definitive examination of the life of one of the most prominent Anastasia impersonators By devlocke Birth-to-death life story of a woman still believed by some to be the "missing" Russian princess, Anastasia. Thoroughly sourced, in succinct and artful prose, it seems unlikely there will ever be a better book on the life of Franziska Schanzkowsky. Fans of Russian history will enjoy the evidence, and fans of compelling stories will enjoy the narrative, even if they lack an innate interest in the subject.I found some of the authors' assumptions questionable, but their conclusions remained unassailable. Highly recommended!

It certainly brought the enigmatic figure of Franziska Schanzkowsky to life -- a very welcome thing to a public brought up on Ingrid Bergman's fragile, sympathetic and highly inaccurate Anastasia or the wildly silly Disney animated version. I came away feeling that I understood Schanzkowsky far better and why she might have tried to fashion a wistful dream into reality. This extremely well written and well researched book will be of great interest to any reader fascinated with the Russian royal family or early 20th century history in general. Highly, highly recommended!

There were interesting aspects of the history that I'd either never read before or were expanded, so it was an interesting read. After DNA testing (both on Anna Anderson and the Imperial family remains, it is obvious that this poor woman was to masquerade for decades as a member of the Romanov family. The book was interesting but the photographs, however, were poor quality and not clear.

This facilitator’s guide details procedures for conducting engaging and age-appropriate group sessions to help adolescents adapt quickly to the changes brought about by parental divorce or separation. The guide has everything a therapist or counselor needs to facilitate the program, including a full script and abbreviated outline for each session, numerous handouts for group members and parents, a sample consent form, a program graduation certificate, and much more.Sessions give teens the opportunity to clarify misperceptions about divorce and separation, engage in meaningful activities, and discuss topics that they may not have been allowed to explore previously. Because some of these topics may be difficult, each group session includes practice of relaxation skills, homework focused on seeking social support, and opportunities for adaptive cognitive coping.
