From the definition of liberation to the idea of resource economics, one gets the idea that we are all in this together. There are many thought-provoking questions in the book. We are not given all the answers but are encouraged to do further research. The book asks you to critically think about our society. A must read.

Outstanding history of the Middle Ages Revising Assumptions By Scott McCrea This wonderfully readable book provides, in a little more than 200 pages no less, a concise summary of economic development and social history during the much derided, abused and forgotten Middle Ages and also summarizes Pirenne's radical views about the real cause of the Dark Ages (he proposes that the Arab Conquest of the Mediterranean basin and Spain and not the Germanic invasions caused the collapse of European Civilization). He also explores, in outline, the general economic rise of Europe after the year 1000, culminating in medieval high point of the mid-Fourteenth Century and the sort of stability that lasted from that period (1350) until the Age of Exploration began and radically altered everything again. It was in the Low Countries and Italy that "capitalism" and the first industrial revolution really began and Pirenne shows how and why this occurred. In this day and age where most people's image of the Middle Ages, if they have one, is based on movies like Kevin Costner's godawful "Robin Hood" and the fun, but totally make-believe, "A Knight's Tale" this book sets forth, concisely, the fascinating complexity of the age that established Christianity as the faith of Europe and the political-social system that ruled 3/4s of the Earth's surface until 1918 and whose vestiges we can still see in the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands, et al.Educated people have taken Gibbon's dismissive derision of the Middle Ages as a period of nothing but violence, superstition and stagnation. Pirenne demolishes Gibbon's amazingly shallow view with a wealth of detail and vivid, easily readable narrative. Although not the masterpiece of literature that Gibbon produced, this volume avoids the joyful boredom that so many writers of economic history seem to delight in inflicting upon their readers. The translation from the French by I.E. Clegg is smooth and idiomatic. Pirenne, who apparently spoke English fluently, helped to prepare the translation. The only irritating part of the book is the presence of several large blocks of untranslated Latin and Old French. Given the general ignorance of Latin (and I am one of the ignorant, I am ashamed to say), Clegg or Pirenne should have translated it for the benefit of the Latinless. Although I read French with some ability, the Old French (pre-1300) uses spellings and some words that I simply can't understand. Modern French dictionaries are useless. Harcourt-Brace should find some present-day academic to "edit" a new edition and translate these passages! A smoother typeface than the ancient "Times-Roman" would also be nice. All in all, if you have any interest in medieval history (especially if you are of European descent) or wish to understand how the market system of economics took form, I highly, highly recommend this book!

By Zecon Pirenne's book first appeared in print in 1933, so I have to admit I was a little leery about reading it even though I have an interest in feudal economics. I was concerned that it would be a stuffy tome that was written in a dense and archaic academic style. To my surprise, this book is an extraordinarily good read, most interesting, and very informative. And unlike many books on this subject, a casual reader can be assured that a master's level background on the subject is not necessary to read this book.Picking up at the end of the Roman Empire and running through approximately the middle 1500s, Pirenne tackles the full spectrum of economic and sociological issues as they evolved throughout the Middle Ages in Europe. Specifically, he relates how commerce was revived after the break-up of the economic and cultural stability that existed in the ancient world. Concepts such as the re-issuance of a currency, the rebirth of a money economy, rediscovery of credit, and how urban industry developed are covered and explained in detail. This is a very complete picture of economic and sociological circumstances that existed during the middle ages, as you are likely to see.Pirenne takes the reader on a journey that attempts to plug the Medieval Period knowledge gap with a detailed explanation of economic development. Geographically (and culturally) he is able to discuss developments throughout all of Europe, from the Mediterranean to the North Sea. If you are interested in learning more about conditions in Europe during the Middle Ages and want a fuller understand of how the western economic system developed, pick up this book

Great book... 4 stars full of fantasy and mythology By Kindle Customer As Written by Terri Babcock (me) at Saguaro Moon Reviewshttp://saguaromoonreviews.com/the-ragnarok-chronicles-by-nicki-j-markus-blog-tour-and-review/The Ragnarok Chronicles by Nicki J. Markus is a romance novel that has very definite mythology intertwined within the storyline. Cassandra is your average young college student who doesn’t have anything that sets her apart from anyone else. Nothing that is, except her abilities to predict the weather and other ordinary day to day things. Her normal calm life then was turned upside down when she started having visions of a frost as well as a handsome stranger by the name of Tom Lockyer came waltzing into her life.Tom Lockyer is not exactly who he says he is though and right from the beginning you can tell tell that he isn’t. Our hero tries to kill Cassandra not once, but twice before a vision hits her hard. When Tom wants her to tell him of the vision, Cassandra makes him take make an oath to not cause her any harm. When he does, it becomes a matter of him going from trying to kill her to protecting her instead. Quite suddenly, we are pulled into a world of Norse Gods, mythology and quite the adventure and romance story.I must admit that this was a rather long book that took me a bit to get into. After about the first ten percent though, I was completely without a doubt hooked on the story. Cassandra and her best friend Sarah were well balanced for each other. They both have their faults yet they make up for it in other ways. Tom was also very well thought out just as the two females were. Because of the depth and background given to each of the characters along with the vivid descriptions of everything that was happening, I felt as though I was right there with them.My overall rating for this book is a 4 out of 5 stars. I would highly recommend The Ragnarok Chronicles to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy, Norse mythology and a romance .

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 3.5 of 5 stars By Carly (Carly's Book Reviews) The complex mythology contained in THE RAGNAROK CHRONICLES is a mixture of truth as we know it and imagination. The characters are larger than life and yet are written from a new perspective that I enjoyed. The considerable length of this novel, 678 pages, ensures that the plot is a long and winding journey. Although slowly paced, I enjoyed the characterization of well known gods and how they are intermixed with contemporary beings. My OFFICIAL REVIEW written for Carly’s Book Reviews

From simple 18th- and early 19th-century gardens to the lavish estates of the Gilded Age, the gardens started by 1930s inmates at Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay to the centuries-old camellias at Middleton Place near Charleston, South Carolina—Rescuing Eden celebrates the history of garden design in the United States, with 28 examples that have been saved by ardent conservationists and generous private owners, and opened to the public. The United States has a rich tradition of landscape design, with gardens on a scale that rivaled the great gardens of Europe, but in the absence of specific institutions dedicated to their preservation, many of these “ephemeral collaborations between man and nature” were lost—during the wars, economic depressions, and social upheavals that swept the country in the mid-20th-century, or to creeping development and urban sprawl. The surviving gardens presented here were selected for the drama of their original creation and rescue and for their historical and horticultural importance. Ranging from wonderful to woebegone, each has its own character, and each has been brought back from the brink through a combination of imagination and tenacity. Discover The Kampong in Miami, Florida, planted with hundreds of tropical rarities from Southeast Asia by legendary plant explorer Dr. David Fairchild; Barnsley Gardens in Georgia, one of the few antebellum gardens surviving in the South, planted with 200 varieties of roses; the Lynchburg, Virginia garden created by Harlem Renaissance poet and civil rights activist Anne Spencer; the eccentric Ladew Topiary Gardens, with 15 garden rooms and a topiary foxhunt; the Belle Epoque grandeur of the Untermyer Garden in Yonkers, New York; and many others across the country, in Kentucky, Texas, Michigan, Maine, Rhode Island, and California. Each garden has been specially photographed by noted landscape and garden photographer Curtice Taylor, and introduced with authoritative and engaging text from design historian Caroline Seebohm, encouraging readers to appreciate the landscapes that serve not only as windows on American history, but living, flourishing pleasure grounds for botanists, horticulturalists, and nature lovers throughout the United States.

Rescuing Eden: Preserving America's Historic Gardens, by Caroline Seebohm

Review "If ever there was a sign of how gardens can offer hope, it must be the ‘dazzling array of blooming borders’ developed in the 1930s at the notorious Alcatraz prison in San Francisco, where an inmate wrote that tilling and planting the hillside became his ‘refuge’ and ‘release’. But like many of the gardens photographed so enthrallingly by Curtice Taylor in this book, its glories quickly turned to weeds when it closed in 1963. Curtice writes movingly of how his career was launched when Russell Page asked him to document a deeply loved private garden that was subsequently razed. Haunted by the loss, he became intrigued by other gardens that had been saved. Caroline Seebohm’s narratives, involving the creation, loss and rediscovery of 30 gardens, are peopled with painters, poets, opera singers, civil rights activists and heroic widows, making for an irresistible mix. And what encouragement for designers to find out how ingeniously and passionately people fought to preserve these landscapes, many of which reflect English tradition. Even the flora of Alcatraz has now been replanted. Where gardens are concerned, the act of rescue is usually reciprocal."—Garden Design Journal"Arranged chronologically, from Colonial days and the Gilded Age to the best of contemporary gardens, Rescuing Eden features the famous historic examples, such as Middleton Place, as well as newer ones that are not so well known outside this country."—Hortus"Lacking a substantial conservation organization, such as England’s National Trust, many of America’s greatest gardens are threatened in various ways: the death of owners, encroaching developers, etc. This beautiful book by design historian Caroline Seebohm profiles 30 gardens that are being preserved, either by local citizens groups or through generous donations. Lavishly illustrated with images by garden photographer Curtice Taylor, this beautifully produced book will appeal to gardeners and preservationists."—Library Journal

About the Author Caroline Seebohm is a design historian and biographer. A prolific author, her books include Boca Rococo, a biography of Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner, At Home with Books, and Cottages and Mansions of the Jersey Shore, as well as biographies of Marietta Tree, Conde Nast, and tennis legend Pancho Segura.   Curtice Tayor is a well-known landscape and garden photographer whose work is widely published. The gardens range from large estate gardens (Filoli in Woodside, Ca. , Middleton Place in Charleston, S.C.), artist's gardens (Florence Griswold's garden in Old Lyme, Ct., Robert Dash's "Madoo" in Sagaponack, N.Y.) to plant collector's (Peckerwood Garden in Hempstead, Tx.) and specialty gardens like Pearl Fryar's topiary garden in South Carolina and opera singer Ganna Walska's dramatic "Lotusland" in Santa Barbara, California. Each garden is beautifully photographed with a short chapter on the history of the gardens and the efforts to save them.

Burton This is an attractive full-color coffee-table book featuring thirty historic gardens--some fully restored, others, such as the garden at Alcatraz that is planted in low maintenance, but still beautiful color--some quite old, others much newer. Besides learning about a large number of gardens I would like to visit, this one even clued me into one in my own state. This book would make a delightful gift for those who love to visit gardens and would likely give them a large number to add to their "wanna-visit" list. Recommended.

Highly recommended By judith tankard Highly recommended for all levels of garden lovers and even those who don't know as much as they should about American gardens. The select group of gardens all have amazing stories about how they were rescued, sometimes from years of neglect and oblivion. One of the best is the newly restored Untermyer Park and Gardens in Yonkers NY and one of the most astonishing are the tropical gardens on Alcatraz Island (featured on the jacket), once the home of some of the nation's most hardened criminals. The gardens are arranged chronologically from Middleton Place in Charleston SC to contemporary gardens from Maine to California. The text is engagingly written and the photographs by Curtice Taylor clearly bring the gardens to life. Most are open to the public, so plan a trip to see some of America's best historic gardens.

Why Science Fair Sucks and How You Can Save It: A Survival Manual For Science Teachers, by Adam Shopis

About the Author I am a father, surfer, and teacher of 7th graders. I have been teaching in an urban public school in Boston for the past 13 years. I got my start in education teaching informal science at a museum in Connecticut. After that I acquired my teaching license in Massachusetts where I have lived ever since. In my career I've taught 4th-7th grade science in regular, inclusion, and advanced work classes. I currently teach general science to 140 seventh graders each year. I strive to make my students as excited about the natural world as I am. I feel that a solid science education is their ticket to understanding their world and carving out a sustainable place in it for themselves. I am also a part time writer of books. I have written a book about science fair and how it has evolved in my classroom. I've also written fiction which I plan to self publish in the near future. When I'm not working, writing, or playing with my kids, I can be found on my longboard in a lineup somewhere, scouting the horizon for the next set.

By Matt Bracksieck Even though I'm not a science teacher, I enjoyed seeing the thought process behind taking an element of the curriculum which doesn't work and turning it into something that does. That's how teaching works!
