Former student really impressed with this book By Barry Mills As a former student of Mr. McGinnis, I’m impressed by the candor, astute historical observations, humor, and literary prowess of this book. The great thing about Tending to the Past is its fluidity. Similar to a lecture that Mr. McGinnis would give, the book combines Jim’s passion, extensive historical knowledge, and sense of humor.The central message of this book is that the current state of education is flawed, and Mr. McGinnis conveys a cogent argument about education serving as a foundation for how to live and not just how to earn a living. The book is much more than that, though, and there’s really something for everyone.Jim is a true public servant, serving to educate and form the minds of America’s future. Had I not been a student of Mr. McGinnis, it would still be apparent from this book that he takes his calling as a teacher seriously. Mr. McGinnis imparts in his students the importance of being engaged in the pressing issues of our time and understanding the context from which we derive our freedom, which is all too easy to take for granted in modern society. What make his message so compelling is his authenticity. I’ve always thought that the best teachers are the ones that make you want to commit to learning the material because you see that the teacher is so committed and you want to match their passion for the subject. Jim is that kind of teacher, and that comes through in his writing.Jim conveys his mastery of history in the book when tying the Enlightenment to the writing of the Declaration of Independence and the subsequent charge by Lincoln to finish the work of the vision that had been so eloquently articulated by Jefferson. Even more impressive were Jim’s discussions on the modern American leader as personified by FDR and subsequently through JFK and, albeit imperfectly, in Ronald Reagan. Jim connects the dots like no other and makes me think about my role in the community and the obligations that I have to serve it.The most engaging part of this book, though, were the parts personified by Quinn. In Quinn, one gets a sense of Jim’s personality and inner thoughts as he engages with colleagues old and new. Quinn’s exchanges with Jodi, in particular, are wrought with sarcasm. Despite the generational difference, Quinn and Jodi are connected by their love for teaching and made me thinks that Quinn has as much to learn from Jodi as she does from him.In summary, this is a refreshing read. It challenged me, made me laugh, and even made me nostalgic for Florida.

A Book for Now, A Book for Always By Blakestr If there was ever a book for this moment... or any moment... in the history of the Great Experiment known as America, this is that book. The author candidly, passionately, and purposefully chose every word to have great impact on its reader and the result is a literary piece of work that should be required reading for anyone who wishes to better understand what Lincoln meant, what the Union stands for, and what it means to teach these great ideas to students. The book places in the reader in distinct times and places, from Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, to the local watering hole. Never difficult to understand, but leaving the reader with much to ponder, this book quite simply provides the reader a lesson in American history, with a dash of literature, as it was meant to be taught- with admiration and appreciation for the wonder that is the Great Experiment.If that sounds fancy, don't fret. The writing is approachable, the ideas within the book familiar. It's a book to read at the beach, at the cabin, in the waiting room, or really anywhere, at any time the world gets too difficult to understand. It's a book to put on your shelf to reach for again and again, with corners tabbed over to pages with particularly profound passages. I would write more as to the story itself, but that is yours to discover. I only seek to provide an overview of the quality of writing, the quality of the information presented, and the great value this book has to anyone with the time to read it, the heart to appreciate it, and the courage to understand it.Oh captain, my captain,Job well done.

An Important Book--a MUST READ By Amazon Customer If you have any interest in public education, history, smart memoir, humor, political happenings, music, poetry, Florida's distinctive culture and landscape...oh and really good writing... Buy this book!Jim McGinnis weaves an honest narrative between historical essays and lyrical poems that leave the reader with a keen insight to the world of today’s classroom teacher. Those in education will, without a doubt, find themselves nodding along with the sentiment of teaching—the struggle against poor policy, the humility of failed lessons, the constant learning as necessity. And, of course, the underlying significance and value of it all.Reading this book connects you to the past in a way that only a seasoned History teacher of this caliber can create. Read this book and remember your former student self, learn about the American experience, contemplate your sense of place in this world. This is what being in the classroom with a master teacher is like.But don’t be fooled, this is not just a fun read. This is not just entertainment, although you will be entertained. This book is also important. There’s a lot to learn here.
