For the first time, teen innovator and scientist Jack Andraka tells the story behind his revolutionary discovery. When a dear family friend passed away from pancreatic cancer, Jack was inspired to create a better method of early detection. At the age of fifteen, he garnered international attention for his breakthrough: a four-cent strip of paper capable of detecting pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancers four hundred times more effectively than the previous standard.

Jack's story is not just a story of dizzying international success; it is a story of overcoming depression and homophobic bullying and finding the resilience to persevere and come out. His account inspires young people, who he argues are the most innovative, to fight for the right to be taken seriously and to pursue our own dreams. Do-it-yourself science experiments are included in each chapter, making Breakthrough perfect for STEM curriculum. But above all, Jack's memoir empowers his generation with the knowledge that we can each change the world if we only have the courage to try.

Review “[N]ot only interesting, but beautifully honest…Jack’s life unfurls with the…realities of growing up that, at times, conflict with identity and awareness, self- esteem, and self-worth [and] are openly shared with the reader. Andraka is certainly an inspiration beyond his generation.” (USA Today)

From the Back Cover

Jack wouldn't give up.

After a dear family friend died of pancreatic cancer, Jack Andraka decided to create a better method of early detection. It took two hundred letters before Jack found lab space to pursue his idea and months of work to make it a reality, but in the end, he did it. Jack's early-detection test for pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancers has the potential to be over four hundred times more effective than the medical standard and cost only three cents. Jack was fifteen at the time.

Jack's story is not just one of dizzying international success; it is a story of overcoming depression and homophobic bullying and finding the resilience to persevere and come out. His account inspires young people, who he argues are the most innovative, to fight for the right to be taken seriously and to pursue their own dreams. With hands-on science experiments included, Jack's memoir empowers his generation with the knowledge that we can each change the world if we only have the courage to try.

(A prejudiced review from a former teacher of Jack's :)) By Ali Tuna I need to tell you before I proceed with my review that I worked as a Physics/Math teacher at the school where Jack received his middle school education. Therefore, my review will be completely biased both towards how good the book is, and how awesome science is!I finished this book in one sitting, and I loved it! The book shows the reader how a teenager can change the world when he or she sets his or her goals clearly. Jack also makes clear how crucial support from parents and experienced scientists is. I knew Jack's parents personally, and as far as I could see, they were quite involved in Jack's life and tried to make sure he had all the resources he needed. When you read the book, you will see what kind of challenges Jack had after the decided on his research topics, and how many rejection letters he got from leading scientists in the USA. Some of those letters were even insulting, but Jack did not give up even when he reached the brinks of breakdown. The book sheds some light on how big egos some scientists, even teachers, can have. The points Jack puts forth should be taken into account by people in charge of Science and Technology (STEM or whatever you may call them) education and be used to develop curricula, materials, and most importantly, learning environments like the basement Jack refers to in his book. When I was teaching in the USA, I kept pushing for an engineering lab where students could experiment with different materials, tools, equipment, etc, but, of course, administrators did not agree to it because they did not understand the importance of intellectual curiosity and being able to feed it with the physical tools and equipment needed.I hope the officials take time to read Jack's book, and try to understand how a teenager that they are trying to invoke curiosity for science in looks at science. I am a hardcore Physics teacher, but I believe science requires labs where teenagers can design and conduct their own experiments.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An inspiring book! By Bradley Cooper I really enjoyed this book of the perseverance of a teenager. His struggle and drive are truly motivating.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. He's a really good guy. By Michael Ozaki MD Jack Andraka has written a book that makes me aware that he is the son I never had. He is brave, talented, has a gifted mind and has a wry sense of humor that keeps everything in perspective. He also happens to be gay. His book not only details remarkable scientific and medical achievements but also a personal journey of becoming. It takes courage to propose an idea ridiculed by the scientific community and see it successfully come to reality, but it is more courageous to accept yourself for who you are and to live that life even when many are not accepting. As a pediatrician I have given copies to some of my patients who can benefit from Jack's example. I did so because this book for a bullied youth can be a life changer. It has that kind of power. It should be read and shared. I hope to meet Jack someday. Perhaps it will be at a ceremony where he is winning another award but guessing what kind of man he is, I suspect we will meet over a hamburger at the Stanford Quad talking about the white water of North Carolina. He's a really good guy...read this book Please!
