In telling this story I am not interested in taking any side. I just want to tell the story of how one small nation and a small group of people have had the tenacity and courage to defy the odds and preserve an ancient culture that has become the epicenter of not just conflict but religion, philosophy and human society as a whole. The history of Israel is not infinite, and Jews and Judaism did not begin as the nation of Israel. Many forget the fact that Judaism predates any known reference of a Jewish nation state. After 3000 odd years, Israel is now such an integral part of the Jewish identity, it is understandably hard to imagine a time before its founding. As we look to the very foundation of the first state of Israel we can look no further than the first King of Israel. Yes, what is it a nation wants after they have become a homogenized group? They want a King to lead them off course! And as is mentioned in Samuel, the people of Israel cried out to God to give them a King. And what they received was Saul the first King of Israel.

WHO is this Book for?

  • Foreign students who wish to understand Israel, then and now.
  • Biblical scholars who want to study the history of Israel.
  • Historians and students who wish to understand biblically the history of Israel and the impact of its prophecies to the world.

  • This book will help us understand the conflicts Israel had as a nation, then and now.

A Must Read Book By Iya Vasquez 3 This was a difficult book for me to read or review as it contains material seldom supplied in the usual sources available to me. However, I think it very important to reconsider the direction of a country so necessary for the survival of Jews, and a country that calls itself the only democracy in the Middle East.I read many facts in this book that I was totally unaware of, yet somewhere deep inside I had always questioned the total animosity existing in this tiny country. I felt the tension when visiting several times, despite loving the area and what I thought it stood for.It is not an easy read, and I wanted to go back over a number of sections in order to better understand what had taken place earlier, but I'm not that familiar yet with finding things on my Kindle, so eventually, I may re-read this book in regular book form!I strongly recommend reading this book, written by the grandson of one of the early founders, in order to see and try to understand that in order to remain a viable country, perhaps it is important to open more dialogue, both within the Israeli community and if at all possible, with the surrounding countries. Or I worry this miracle country will no longer be "My Promised Land"!

Synopsis: Ninija is an Aboriginal tribal leader in mourning for her son, Ginger, who fell prey to alcohol and drug abuse like so many of their people. Preparations are currently underway for his Burial ceremony, but as Ninija prepares for this most sacred of ceremonies, the white ghost Lumaluma, whom only she can see and hear, plagues her. Lumaluma wants Ninija to be his concubine and relentlessly and lustily pursues her to that end. As the twelve days of preparations continue for Ginger’s Burial ceremony, Ninija is continuously distracted from her duties by Lumaluma, who tries to tear her away from the pristine morals and natural goodness of traditional life. Seduced by his gifts and attentions, she is intermittently torn out of her desert life. In time, Ninija finds herself between two worlds; her Lands in the desert, known as the ‘Here-and-Now;’ and the so-called ‘civilized’ lands, a spiritual wilderness where people live in their minds, consumed by a great fear of death and disease. This is Lumaluma’s world, which Ninija calls his Easy-Happy-Sexy. Will Ninija find the strength to resist Lumaluma’s advances and make the crafty white-fella ghost pay the price for his bullying and lack of respect? About the Author: Linden Thorp was born in Manchester, England in 1952 and is currently a university teacher in Japan specializing in Academic English. However she has lived many other lives, which she now feels sufficiently wise to engage fully in the process of writing about. Easy-Happy-Sexy is her second novel and was inspired by the time she spent living with indigenous Australians in the South Australian desert. Publisher’s website:http://sbpra.com/LindenThorp

Easy-Happy-Sexy: On the Twelfth Day, by Linden Thorp

Review Critique by Lajla Cline, writer and teacher/editor representing Kore Press, Tuscon, Arizona In  Easy-Happy-Sexy, your use of language and detail are wonderful, whimsical, fantastical - "A pink taffeta dress...colour-washed orange by the desert dust"...and surreal, abstract in others.."She makes her palms flat to match white-fella's 'flat' and 'straight,'" etc. The diction mirrors a kind of flight felt in the time, and attention devoted to the interior landscapes of the characters: Ninija and her granddaughter, Gina. .....an utterly unique and meaningful story...'

About the Author This is the background to my novel 'Easy-Happy-Sexy.' I was backpacking around Australia and found myself one day in Alice Spring, a kind of inland cul-de-sac where all public passable roads terminate. Beyond Alice is thousands of miles of desert, the outback. The native people call it 'The Lands.' On my journey around Australia, the presence of Aboriginals fascinated me. I remember wondering why they wanted to live in developed cities around the perimeter of Australia when they had the whole of the interior as their natural Lands. I could not have known at that point that I was just about to find out.I soon signed up to be interviewed for a Rotary project designed to help the old and young members of a tribe, Pydjindjara, to move back into traditional life in the Lands, and I was in fact chosen to join a small team. The board was looking for people who had an interest in ancient indigenous cultures and ways of being, and I had been working as a Music Therapist using aboriginal stories and songs, so I was very interested. When we arrived, I met Ninija, the tribal leader, a small very elderly woman who was rumoured to be about 120 years old. I knew many things from that moment on that I had never known, and discovered sometime later that Ninija had deliberately called me to her psychically. Needless to say, she initiated me and became my spirit guide, and she still guides me to this day. I promised her that I would tell her story of the suffering caused by the domination of white Europeans to the whole world, and so I wrote this book. It is actually a modern-day fable using metaphor and magic as a means to developed peoples understanding the ancient desert ways. It uses stories in the way that the Lands people do.file:///Users/linden/Documents/SB%20Author%20Site/Author%20site%20This%20is%20the%20background%20to%20my%20novel%20%E2%80%98Easy.pdf

By Eishinas 'Easy-Happy-Sexy: On the Twelfth Day' by author Linden Thorp is a very different and unusual fictional-fantasy read where readers are to witness a life story of an Aboriginal tribal leader 'Ninija' whose son Ginger has fallen to the mercy of drugs and alcohol addiction. Ninija's life is ruled by a crafty white -fella ghost 'Lumaluma' who doesn't leave any stone unturned in distracting Ninija from fulfilling her duties and preparing for the sacred burial ceremonies of Ginger. Will Ninija ever defeat and overcome the distractions caused by Lumaluma, this mystery makes the novel an engaging read forcing readers to sit back and finish the book in a go.Author Linder Thorp has given a wonderful captivating description of tribal life style, desert and tribal rituals and morals using her own personal experiences of staying with the Aboriginal tribes giving the book a realistic imaginary visual for readers to feel and connect with the strong story plot. Those who believe and are interested in fantasy and imaginary characters such as spirits and ghosts, this book is sure to take them through a long way, also I would highly recommend this book to all and esp. to those who love adventure and exploring and learning more about tribals and their lifestyle. Its a wonderful read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One Man's expoits recounted By Barrie W. Bracken The Constitution makes provision for the return of "fugitives from labor." You remember it doesn't like to use the word slave because of the country's proclamation of "certain unalienable rights" for its citizens. The laws founded on this constitutional guarantee were found inadequate between 11789 and 1850. So as a part of the great series of compromises known collectively as the Compromise of 1850, a new Fugitive Slave Act was passed. This one stirred up more trouble than anyone expected. While the idea of returning a slave who had found his freedom to slavery was unpalatable, the worst part of the law was the part the citizen was expected to play. A slave owner, or more likely a slave hunter, identifies some hapless black as a runaway slave and goes to a marshal to have that slave taken into custody. It is determined that help is needed to subdue and restrain the runaway, so any bystander can be drafted to assist in the capture. If this citizen does not cooperate he can be fined and/or jailed for his refusal. Of course, Boston was one of the most contentious places any catcher could pick to redeem a fugitive. While several well-known cases occurred in Boston, the most famous is the rendition of Anthony Burns. Our author says he played a part in or was witness to this capture, trial, and return. He was one of many well known men who formed the Committee of Vigilance. This committee whose purpose was to uphold the rights of the escaped slave and aid in his safe passage to free land had many famous people in its ranks: A. Bronson Alcott, John Andrew, Anson Burlingame, William Channing, Richard Dana, Theodore Parker, Wendell Phillips, even Lysander Spooner.Bearse worked as a mate on a coastal steamer that wintered in Charleston, S. C. and conducted some river trade during this time throughout the coastal states and on the rivers in the South. While engaged on this ship he carried groups of slaves from their homes to inland plantations to whom they had been sold. He recounts some of the horror stories from these voyages, but the main interest is in the rendition of fugitives in the Boston area. Unfortunately the author dedicates considerable space to extolling his own virtues and high place connections in the committee. This brief recounting will show the form the book takes:"Hardly had Shadrach [another famous fugitive] fled the grasp of the slave-hounds, [and emotions cooled when on the night of April 3, 1851] Thomas Sims was seized . . . by the police, who, disguised as city watchmen, violated the law of Massachusetts that forbade an officer of our Commonwealth to aid in arresting a person claimed as a fugitive slave."During the ensuing struggle Sims was heard to say he was being kidnapped. This was all it took to activate the Committee of Vigilance. They worked unsuccessfully to free Sims. Other cases are given of fugitives captured and returned, and we end with Anthony Burns, counting his original purchase price and the mammoth expense to the U. S. government to effect his return, the most costly slave in America. For anyone interested in the workings of the Fugitive Slave Law the story of Burns is the most elaborate and widely written and a better choice than this little book.

By Angela I liked the fact that the author shared about how the woodcutter was so greedy that when he went to present Elwen, a dwarf to the king , he was thrown out of the castle with nothing. I recommend this for very young kids who loves dairy tales I therefore because of a very good moral presented in this ebook with very colorful illustrations that young kids would love feel that it could use with five stars. I received this for free and in return have now given it an honest review. Very good work Rhonda! By Angela

There are many volumes written on the subject of leadership that go into immense detail about the historical examples used to indirectly describe the characteristics of leaders. But every man is different and every leader is different although leaders generally share some very similar human attributes, which are described in this brief book as “ The Seven Signs of Leadership”. Why, some readers might ask was the number of seven chosen and the simple answer lies in the fact that of the many qualities found in various leaders throughout the majority of them can de distilled down to seven simple characteristics, which perfectly define the leader. The 21st century has brought man on an amazing journey from the swamps of early earth to the extra-planetary missions and human regeneration projects of today. None of these great achievements would have occurred without great leaders with great visions and the tenacity and determination to bring them to a conclusion regardless of the intense opposition they all experienced. Not all men, in fact very few can be leaders and that is the way evolution designed things for if the planet were populated by too many leaders then one can rest assured that human progress would have been stymied. Leaders are both born and made and the ongoing nature-nurture argument that circulates around this sensitive social and political topic cannot get away from the fact that the genetic code with one is born is probably the most critical element in deciding which course the individual will take. Leaders are men of courage, vision and tenacity and although the majority of them become known to the world at later points in their life, the internal and very solitary work necessary to bring then to this point has been in progress since their birth. Leaders do not just appear out of the ether and if they happen to do so their tenure is abruptly shortened. In this book I have referenced mainly military leaders for, in my opinion, they represent the truest form of leadership to which our children can and should aspire. Tragically the lot of political leaders, unless they have previously served in the military, is one of disgrace and a repetition of corruption and moral weakness that belie a fundamentally weak character. It is for these reasons that I chose not to include any of their names as references, except that of Winston Churchill, who history considers more a man of the military than the political process. I hope this very brief book is of interest and use to many people who are looking for the clues to how we chose our leaders so that when the next elections come the people of various countries can use this checklist to help them decide which ballot box to tick.

First rule of thievery: don't be a hero. When Eli broke the rules and saved the Council Kingdoms, he thought he knew the price, but resuming his place as the Shepherdess's favorite isn't as simple as bowing his head. Now that she has her darling back, Benehime is setting in motion a plan that could destroy everything she was created to protect, and even Eli's charm might not be enough to stop her. But Eli Monpress always has a plan, and with disaster rapidly approaching, he's pulling in every favor he can think of to make it work, including the grudging help of the Spirit Court's new Rector, Miranda Lyonette. But with the world in panic, the demon stirring, and the Lord of Storms back on the hunt, it's going to take more than luck and charm to pull Eli through this time. He's going to have to break a few more rules and work with some old enemies if he's going to survive.

But in the way that makes it feel like the journey was a waste. I actually finished reading this book awhile back, but I felt conflicted about this last book in the series and wanted to wait until my feelings settled. Normally, I like to write reviews fairly soon after reading the book, while everything is fresh in my mind. The first book started off with the charismatic thief Eli Monpress who was able to do things no one should and who had a loyal crew, as morally grey as himself. Intriguing. As the books went on his main opponent Miranda, who was determined to being Eli to justice, came to the forefront. And more world building got added with each book to explain why the world worked the way it did. With the final book culminating in the main antagonist being brought down and peace restored, as expected. But the reason this book is 3 stars, instead of the 4 or 5 I'd have given the others, actually goes back to the first book. The book series is called The Legend of Eli Monpress and he was such an intriguing character in the first book. I instantly wanted to know more about him. Why the burning passion to become the greatest thief in the world with the highest bounty? How was he able to do things other wizards couldn't? Why did all the spirits listen to him so much or fawn over him? I was eager to read more books, learn more about him and see how his character would transform. However, I never felt like I got what I wanted. In the first few books I tolerated the fact that I felt we didn't get enough scenes from Eli's perspective. He was still mostly a mystery and seeing chapters from Miranda (or others) just gave us an intriguing outside perspective on him and insight into the larger world. But as we learned more about the world in general and how it was crumbling (and why), the focus continued to shift away from Eli: to follow Miranda, learn more about the other two members of Eli's crew, minor characters being given more screen time and backstory, etc.As I learned more about what was at stake in the world with each book, I kept waiting for the time when Eli would shift to the forefront and we'd see him finally embrace all the power he had and become a true leader. And surprise all of the doubters who only saw him as a flippant, petty thief who only cared about himself. But that never really happened. Miranda was more responsible for saving the world than Eli was. And if I went back through the series and counted the number of scenes from her perspective, I'd guess that her scenes would vastly outnumber Eli's.And then there's all of the questions that were raised the more we learned about the backstory that were never answered (I'm being a bit vague to try to avoid spoilers). The world was saved by essentially re-setting everything back to how it was right before book 1. So the same long term problems are still there looming. Just pushed off to some future date (b/c the way the mythology was laid out, things can't continue on the way they are indefinitely). And for a series called "The Legend of Eli Monpress" he gets shockingly little character development and plays only a small part in the ultimate resolution.A more honest series title would have been The Legend of Miranda Lyonette. But instead, I feel like I got baited with it being the story of Eli, the charming, powerful, rogue thief. Because the legend of Miranda, the goody-goody, self-righteous, Mary Sue probably doesn't have the same power to hook people in.Eli was billed as the series' protagonist, but I'm not sure why. He's not the one responsible for moving the greater conflict forward and has a minimal role in solving it. He doesn't even have the most scenes in any of the books. And at the end of book five none of his goals or motivations have changed, despite all that's happened. He's still a carefree thief travelling with his small crew, trying to earn the highest "for capture of" bounty. The series literally ends in the same place it started. And not in the way that some books do it, where the characters go through hell and through hard fought battles are able to go back to a normal life, wiser and more appreciative. This series does it in a way where you wonder how the characters can go through all that they did and still manage to not grow or change. For the most part, the world hasn't changed and neither have the characters. So what was the point?

Finished reading it in a day, as I couldn't put it down, and I wish there was more. Can't believe this series has ended. What an adventure, Eli!Like her previous books, Aaron delivers. The book is well written and fast paced. It keeps you riveted and wanting more. Additionally, the book takes time to better acquaint you with Sara and Etmon Banage and their relationship. After finding out in the last book that they were married, I wanted to know what had happened, why they had grown apart, and this book answered those questions, including questions on Sparrow, the relay points, and more. We also see Nico and Josef's relationship grow, and dare I say it, Eli and Miranda's. Since it is the last book, all questions are answered, and it was sublime to read. Loved the information on the Lord of Storms and the League. For some reason, the first time Alric was mentioned I became a fan. I wish he had been a more prominent participant in this book, but reading about him towards the end was nice too.Wonderful book, though I do wish there was another in the series. The ending did surprise me a little; I can't make up my mind if I am disappointed, or not regarding Eli and Miranda, but I don't want to give anything away.Overall, great read. I suggest the Eli Monpress series to all.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. 3.5 stars. A solid end to the series, but... By Cissa I liked this series more when it was capers rather than Saving The World.Since we went into Saving The World territory, though, this was a pretty good ending. The resolutions are both solid and sometimes surprising- a great combination. The characters stayed true to themselves, and major parts of the plot and the resolution were character-based.The overall cosmology was not especially addressed here, though, and I found that frustrating. Whence came the "demons"? Why are chieftan spirits called "stars", when there are not stars in the cosmos? Broadening out the scope to be World-Saving rather than capers starts asking a lot of questions that I did not feel were adequately addressed. It was an enjoyable series. However, even though #1-3 were somewhat more awkward, I did find them more satisfying than #4 & 5.Recommended only if you are reading the series.

Great Concept/ Great Book By Rich J I am a big fan of the other two books in this "series": "Secret New York- An Unusual Guide" and "Secret New York- Curious Activities".However this book takes it to another level for me..most likely due to the fact that it combines two of my favorite pasttimes- eating/imbibing and exploring NYC. This is a very well-written, mostly well thought out book. I say "mostly" because even with all the places they list in here, they left out Pegu Club, La Bibliotecha, and most noticably- The Tippler, which is in fact underneath Chelsea Market. But this still gets Five Stars from me because there are many very cool spots reviewed in detail. I have been to a bunch already, and they do hit the nail on the head. And now I am inspired to seek out all these places that I hadn't known about before.

How can slavery still exist in the world in 2015? When a high-school student asks herself this question, she quickly discovers that the world as it exists today differs significantly from the world of her textbooks. In history, she was taught that world leaders had abolished the institution of slavery centuries back. To her horror, she discovers that modern-day slavery thrives all across the world. In some countries, children are lured or stolen from their homes and sold as sex workers into a life of degradation from which there is no escape. Even more shockingly, she realizes that human trafficking is prevalent in her own country, the United States. Determined to learn how to combat modern-day slavery, she begins speaking to anti-trafficking activists. Although each of them occupy different professions, there is a common thread-- they are all committed to ridding the world of neo-slavery through their individual careers. She discovers the stories of these "abolitionists", who through their courage, commitment and perseverance, have aided victims and survivors. . Inspired by them, she starts interviewing and documenting the journeys of these heroes. This book tells their stories.

The author should be a role model for the youth By SmilingBuddha It is commendable that a high-school student growing up in a society of easy-access consumerism cared to even think about this serious yet much-neglected social issue. It is inspiring that the author followed-up her thought with such positive action. We need many more such role models. This book should be a must read in our high schools.

*Includes pictures *Includes Hoffa's own quotes about his life and career *Profiles the various conspiracy theories surrounding Hoffa's disappearance *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “I've told you before and I'll tell you again. The strong survive and the weak disappear. We do not intend to disappear.” - Jimmy Hoffa "’He's not just the most powerful man in labor,’ Robert Kennedy had said in the wake of Hoffa's announcement; ‘he's the most powerful man in the country, next to the President.’" – Arthur A. Sloane, Hoffa A century ago, if one were to come across a manual laborer from the early 20th century or the Roaring Twenties and relayed to them the possibility of one day sticking it to The Man, one would probably be laughed out of the century. However, this was exactly what one man with solid-gold aspirations and audacity set out to achieve. Jimmy Hoffa, once described by Bobby Kennedy as the second most powerful man in America, was a union boss who evoked both respect and fear, and he continues to be a legendary figure who often crops up in conversation and media over 40 years after his disappearance. While it was an open secret that Hoffa had shady connections, the success of his leadership allowed supporters to overlook them. As Sloane put it, “More apparent to Teamster members than any moral lapses were the tangible gains that had been steadily realized under Hoffa since his advent to power.” Charles Brandt once wrote, “From 1955 until 1965 Jimmy Hoffa was as famous as Elvis Presley. From 1965 until 1975 Jimmy Hoffa was as famous as the Beatles.” But as famous as he was in life, it was Jimmy Hoffa’s demise that continues to fascinate the country. On July 30, 1975, Hoffa drove to an important meeting at the Machus Red Fox Restaurant, but he was never seen or heard from again. To this day, authorities are still searching for him (or presumably his remains), having been overloaded with false and dead-end leads throughout the decades. By championing the hearts and loyalty of America's trucking industry and arousing fear in the public for his rumored mob connections, earning a couple of enemies along the way was inevitable for Hoffa, but the mystery remains. Naturally, people have put forward ridiculous theories to explain his disappearance, but either way, it’s fair to say that the legendary life and times of the controversial and still-missing Teamster leader have produced one of the world's most baffling ongoing mysteries for good reason. Jimmy Hoffa: The Controversial Life and Disappearance of the Godfather of the Teamsters chronicles the tumultuous life of Jimmy Hoffa, one oozing with action and glory but also full of sinister entanglements with the criminal underworld. The book also looks at the enigma of his life and disappearance, exploring the most credible, fascinating, and downright nutty theories surrounding his persistently debated fate. Along with pictures and a bibliography, you’ll learn about Hoffa like never before.

Excellent commentary on the pre-labor movement and the rise of the Teamsters By Modupe Hendricks First I highly recommend this book, Jimmy Hoffa: The Controversial Life and Disappearance of the Godfather of the Teamsters because of its description of the labor movement in the United States prior to the 1950s. There probably would never have been a Jimmy Hoffa if the majority the employers had treated their employees at least adequately if not decently. The book describes Jimmy Hoffa’s early life and the suffering his family underwent with the death of his father from black lung disease. Jimmy Hoffa was a short individual who may have suffered from the Napoleon complex because he learned early in life that he had to fight for everything he received including respect. The book explained that has Hoffa rose in the union he had to make deals with organized crime to prevent organized crime criminals from conducting strike breaking activities (the book noted that many of the industrial leaders also had utilized these criminal elements to suppress workers attempting to join unions and striking). It’s not clear to me from the reading why Bobby Kennedy hated the Teamster union and Jimmy Hoffa in particular. The one thing that is clear is that Jimmy Hoffa hated the Kennedys has much or more than they hated him.Who killed Jimmy Hoffa the book provided a number of theories including the one about the aliens. Who killed Jimmy Hoffa? The why Jimmy Hoffa was killed was clearly to prevent him from re-taking over the leadership of the Teamsters. Again who killed Jimmy Hoffa the book will provide many suggestions. I like this book very much and I highly recommend reading this book and others about the labor movement.

Another look at Hoffa By Kindle Customer Living in the steel belt between Pittsburgh and Detroit in the late 60's and through the 70's the legend of Jimmy Hoffa and his associates was very strong a d off mentioned. There were, at that time, several establishments said to be connected with the labor leader. Those stories don't surface as much when we revisit the area but the question of what happened to him persists. I have read several things about that portion of his life and mystery but was very pleased that this book took us back to his roots and beginnings. Very interesting to get the back story which, while not answering the questions surrounding his disappearance at least gives me a much clearer understanding of why and how Hoffa became the man he was.

It is well researched, well written and contains relatively few typos. I would recomend it as an introduction to the Hoffa story to be followed up by more in-depth works if so desired.

A treasury of classic tales invites readers into the desolate, hallucinogenic twilight world of Celtic myth and legend.

Mischievous fairy people, murderous giants, priests, devils, druidic spells and more. Stories include The Soul Cages, The Kildare Pooka, The Black Lamb, The Horned Women, The Phantom Isle, King O'Toole and His Goose, many more. With an Introduction and Notes by W. B. Yeats.

In this delightful gathering of legend and song, the familiar characters of Irish myth come to life: the mercurial trooping fairies, as ready to make mischief as to do good; the solitary and industrious Lepracaun and his dissipated cousin, the Cluricaun; the fearsome Pooka, who lives among ruins and has "grown monstrous with much solitude"; and the Banshee, whose eerie wailing warns of death.

This compilation remains an influential and beloved anthology of Irish folklore. Many of its tales were recorded by the earliest collectors of Irish folklore and have been told around the hearth for hundreds of years. The cast includes familiar characters such as the Fairy Shoemaker, the Banshee, and Finn Mac Cool. Ghost stories, outlandish adventures, poems, and traditional fairy tales carefully selected and edited by Yeats both amuse and educate, providing a glimpse into the world of Irish folk life and belief at the dawn of modern Irish civilization.

Born in 1865 in Sandymount, County, he spent his childhood in the rugged countryside of County Sligo, and in the cities of Dublin and London. Together with the philanthropist and folklore collector Lady Augusta Gregory, Yeats founded the first Irish national theater in 1899 and ignited the Irish Literary Revival. Yeats was elected to the first Irish Senate in 1922 and was awarded the Gothenburg Prize for Poetry in 1937. He died in Roquebrune, France, in 1939.

By A Customer These stories that Yeats collected are as deeply moving as his poetry. You have the feeling that this collection is a part of the deep well that Yeats' created his earlier 'Celtic Twilight' poetry from. These stories are faery tales, but there is an element of realism to them for, as you read, you doubt not the truth of the tales, and immediately want to escape to Ireland and dance on the hills with the fey folk. Read this in the winter by the fire with a copy of Yeats' early poetry and prepare for a twilight wandering amongst shadowy woods, quiet country roads and green green hills. This is one of those books which you hold up to your heart upon completion, and sigh deeply from the experience of reading it - more of a journey than the act of turning pages and interpreting words...

By Monika In this delightful volume, first published in 1892, William Butler Yeats has collected all manner of Irish folklore (mostly short stories, with a few poems) from a wide variety sources. He has divided the works into categories as follows: the "Trooping Fairies" (fairies, changelings, and the "merrow" or mermaids); the "Solitary Fairies" (the lepracaun, the pooka - an animal spirit, and the banshee); "Ghosts"; "Witches & Fairy Doctors"; "T'yeer-na-n-Oge" or "Tir-na-n-Og" (a legendary island said to appear and disappear); "Saints & Priests"; "The Devil"; "Giants"; and "Kings / Queens / Princesses / Earls / Robbers." Yeats introduces each section with background information on the creature the stories in that category will concern. He also includes numerous footnotes of interest, making this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking to learn about the tradition of Irish folklore. While I have given this anthology a five-star rating based on it's value as a source of information on Irish mythology, it would probably be worth only four stars for entertainment value alone. Some of the stories are very short and/or don't have much of a point, and are less interesting. These tend to serve more as testimony to the nature of a particular mythical being rather than being an actual story with a plot and message for the reader. Nevertheless, the book as a whole offers a very comprehensive look at just what defines Irish folk culture. The stories that do have a point sometimes take the form of "how things came to be this way" tales, or provide a moral lesson, etc. Many of the stories are rather dark, as that tends to be the nature of lore from this region, but there are also some lighthearted and cheerful pieces.Despite the book having been compiled more than one hundred years ago, most of the stories are quite easy to read. Yeats makes things even more simple for the reader by making footnotes where old Irish words or phrases are used, giving us their meaning. However, there are a few stories that have been left in a more archaic form, which is distracting and a bit harder to decipher. Take, for example, the following excerpt:". . . the minit he puts his knife into the fish, there was a murtherin' screech, that you'd the life id lave you if you hurd it, and away jumps the throut out av the fryin'-pan into the middle o' the flure; and an the spot where it fell, up riz a lovely lady - the beautifullest crathur that eyes ever seen, dressed in white, and a band o' goold in her hair, and a sthrame o' blood runnin' down her arm."One of the things I enjoy most about literature is finding connections with other works I've read, and "Irish Fairy & Folk Tales" does not disappoint in this regard. Many of the pieces are derivations of other, more common fairy tales. For instance, "Smallhead and the King's Sons" (Ghosts) incorporates some elements from both "Cinderella" and "Hansel and Gretel," while "The Giant's Stairs" (Giants) has some similarities to the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk." There are more connections like this. On the whole I found this book to be very enjoyable, and also a valuable read from a literary / academic standpoint. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone interesting in the history of Irish culture, the study of fairy tales and folklore, or both.

All sorts of creatures and strange happenings are described, and a good number of the stories are told in the dialect of the person who the story was gotten from (Yeats & his friends traveled around Ireland collecting stories from the people they met - recording the oral traditions, if you will.)
