The stories are known by all: Glass slippers, poisoned apples, charming princes and bad wolves; and all know that, in the end, those who deserved it lived happily ever after... But then why haven’t they? How could everything have gone so terribly, horribly wrong? And why does everyone act as if nothing were the matter? Those are the questions that torment Ash, one of the few aware that something dire is afoot, and the only one willing to go in search of answers. Answers he shall find in the cryptic verses of the Perraultimatum, which will send him on a quest in search of the happy endings that never came to pass, hoping against hope that not all is lost to gloom and despair. Accompanied by four others who share his fate, if not his faith — the unpredictable Hood, the enigmatic Apprentice, the tormented Vasilisa and the dangerous Donkey-Suckle — Ash embarks on an unforgettable adventure in this first book of the fairy-tale dystopia "Happily Upon a Time".

By Grady Harp Handsome young Portuguese author Filipe Faria, born in 1982 in Lisbon has two avenues of experience in thinking - both from his education in the German School of Lisbon K - 12 and from his Portuguese family. His gift for writing fantasy resulted in his winning the Branquinho da Fonseca award, a joint initiative of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the weekly "Expresso" in 2001, and was awarded the Matilde Rosa Araújo award - Breakthrough in Young Adult Literature in 2002. His works in Portuguese have been included in the Portuguese National Reading Plan.Filipe's first book to be translated into English is this delightful fantasy THE PERRAULTIMATUM - a collection well known fairy tales pushed to a new level of fear and fright and at the same time scintillatingly entertaining. He divides his book into two parts - Part One introduces his cast of characters, each a variation of well known fairytales such s those form the Brothers Grimm and the standards such as Little Red Riding Hood (here a succulent little post pubertal lass whose figure and demeanor are the focal point of the neighboring young lads and men as she carries cookies to Granny's house - Granny being the big bad Wolf of yore!), Donkey-Suckle, Ash (our little third child boy who is thought no better than to sweep the ashes until he ventures out to the King's arena), Vasilia and Apprentice - each one signaling memories of known characters from our childhood bedtime stories. Only the variations of the stories (actually only matrices for Filipe's imagination) are all sour in these tales. This is the conundrum of why the `happily ever after' ending of all fairy tales is lost and our new hero, Ash, is the one must discover the `wrong' of it all and through a series of adventures on which he embarks as he searches for the Perraultimatum, `which will send him on a quest in search of the happy endings that never came to pass, hoping against hope that not all is lost to gloom and despair.'As Filipe so aptly describes the genesis of this book, `as childlike fascination had been tempered by a measure of adult cynicism this was no longer just about telling an adventure in which characters of different fairy tales met up, but rather the tale of a world in which all stories not only existed contiguously, they had also ended in horrific fashion for some dark, mysterious reason for all those involved. While perfectly aware that the concept of twisted fairy tales isn't anything new and that I wasn't reinventing the wheel, there is a method to the madness that seems to have overtaken the world of Happily Upon a Time, and some characters are indeed aware in an almost meta-narrative sense that their stories weren't meant to have ended the way they did. And so, in The Perraultimatum, these select few characters embark on a quest to find out whether or not they had lived happily upon a time... and if they may yet get to live happily ever after.'Writing like this is rare, intriguing, facile, and very clever in the way that it makes the fairytale tradition a parody of life as becoming an adult alters it. A fine series - and this is only Book 1! Grady Harp, April 15

By BranMorrighan The Perraultimatum brings us the “lived happily ever after” fairytale stories we all know and joins them them in a united narrative that is darker and more complex, where chaos reigns and where happiness is rare or even nonexistant.Although intrigued by the cover and the premise, I didn't quite know what to expect from this book at first, but was quickly hooked and couldn't help but be drawn into the plot woven around the characters. It takes quite a bit of imagination to craft a story like this that mixes so many different characters and stories, and the darker elements make this book unique.Of the five main characters, I have to name as my favorites Hood and Donkey-Suckle (the “Donkey” mentioned in the blurb). The first one for her rebellious, seductive and irreverent personality. Her story is quite a twist in the traditional Red Riding Hood tale, but very original. The second one because, well, a character named “Donkey-Suckle” is amusing just because of the name. Especially with the way it ties with his childhood. Not only that, his personality and attitude towards everything he comes across is quite remarkable. Kudos to the author for these original, intriguing characters. The writing is quite descriptive and detailed in places, sometimes even too much, but it's quite cinematic and has a good pace that makes for compulsive reading. All in all, very enjoyable. I can't wait to see where the plot will take these crazy characters next.

By Pedro Silva The Perraultimatum features a host of well known characters from the days of yore and mixes them up in some interesting new situations. This emerging trend, which may be more familiar to fans of the "Fables" comic book series and "Once Upon a Time" TV series, crystallizes itself nicely in literature form in this book by Filipe Faria. The plot starts off familiarly enough and new readers will quickly recognize most of the tropes present in the first scenes. However, slowly and masterfully the author introduces some nice twists and turns that make for a fresh take on the subject matter. Filipe Faria seems to be well at ease with the adventurous narrative style he presents. Although this is his first foray in an English edition, he has an extensive body of work in Portuguese. The author translated the book himself, displaying a solid grasp of the English language and keeping me invested in every chapter. This first volume of Happily Upon a Time proved to be a nice page-turner and I seriously look forward to its next installment.
