This printing by "Martino Fine Books," the 2015 reprint of 1958 edition, does not have the same content or pagination as the second, revised edition published in 1968 by University of Texas Press and frequently assigned to students of folklore and fairy tales: Morphology of the Folktale (Publications of the American Folklore Society)The second, 1968 (U. Texas Press) edition linked above revised and reset the entire text, corrected innumerable errors and inconsistencies (in Propp's original as well as the 1958 translation), updated the numbering of tales to reflect the newer scholarly editions of Aleksandr Afanas'ev's three-volume collection, and improved the text's legibility greatly (for example, the schemes of tales in Appendix III, drawn by hand in the 1958 edition and hard to read, are in easy to follow in the second edition). The author's first name (Vladimir) doesn't even make it onto the cover of the "Martino Fine Books" edition, which will tip you off that it is one of the thousands of reprintings of out-of-copyright books that have sprung up like mushrooms all over bookseller sites. The cover image of Red Riding Hood, who is not represented in the Russian wondertale tradition, also suggests the degree of care that went into producing this book. This reprint of an outdated, out-of-copyright text is a cynical attempt to lure students into buying an inferior product that is hard to read and hard to use in class when their colleagues and instructor will be referencing the second edition. I assume that the translators and editors are not receiving royalties on this little beauty either. Please do the right thing and spend the extra few dollars for the U. Texas Press edition: Morphology of the Folktale (Publications of the American Folklore Society)

This decades old study is still relevent to anyone studying the writing of fiction. If you add your own imagination to the meaning of this material, it becomes a viable support to the writing of nearly any story. If not that for you, then it is helpful in the structure and analysis of all storytelling. Also search for the game "Once Upon a Time", based upon Propp's book. The game also now has its own writing handbook worth reading. See Atlas Games.
