Book Review by PizzyGirl By PrismBookAlliance 3.5 of 5 StarsFor original review see The Prism Book Alliance® Blog onlineLately, I have been reading a lot of the same types of books and realized I was in a rut. I needed to add something to my queue that was different from what I was reading, yet not so wildly out there that I would risk absolutely hating it. So what better than to try the F/F version of on my favorite tropes and genres. This story was promoted as a modern retelling of a beloved fairy tale. It was tagged as Cinderella falling for the Evil Queen. If you follow my reviews, then you know I love a good twist on a traditional fairy tale so I was excited to give Wicked Magic.Chandler is a modern day Cinderella with a bitchy stepmother and two snobby step sisters who do not like Chandler and made her feel ugly and inferior. But unlike the original version, Chandler did not remain in that abusive life until true love gave her the means to escape. Instead, Chandler stood on her own and made a good life for herself. She has a successful career and her own home. However, she still lacks that true love.Alex is a modern day witch. She is a photographer and has been dubbed “The Queen of Beautiful Images.” She has extraordinary powers and it is only those power, in my opinion, that liken her to the “Evil Queen” in any way. She really is not evil so I am thinking maybe this analogy was misused, but I understood the concept and what the author was trying to do.I enjoyed the magical aspects of this book and wish that aspect would have been more prevalent. I understand this is the start of a new series, so maybe there will be more in the later volumes. The thing made me chose a rating of 3.5 stars was the lack of emotional development in this relationship. It was extremely rushed with Chandler going from straight, blushing virgin to being in a lesbian and in ONE week. I can see Alex’s instantly being in love because that was explained in the story as fated soul mates. But I am at a loss for how exactly Chandler fell in love. Her attachment to Alex was written much like you would expect a virgin to react to their first sexual experience. She instantly formed an attachment to the first woman to spark desire in her. She just happened to luck out that the sentiment was returned. But that was really all the time that was devoted to Chandler’s romantic development to Alex. Once love was established, the rest of the story was more or less devoted to backstabbing ex-girlfriends and Chandler discovering Alex’s true nature.I enjoyed this story, but it would have been more enjoyable for me if there had been more time spent showing the reader how Chandler and Alex fell in love. I am still interested in this series and am curious to see how the author propels it forward. Will it be a continuation of Alex and Chandler’s story, or will there be another fairy tale tackled?

I don't want to give too much away but Ms. Black kept me guessing whether her evil queen was good or bad until the very end. This is a novella and I was amazed how well developed the characters were for such a short book. They spring to life and pull you through that mirror into their story. A most enjoyable read!

Sadly, only one of the two main characters has a definable personality, and promised evil witch shenanigans manifest in a really minor, petty way. Some of the scenes between the two main characters are fun, and I'll check out the sequel, but what should have been a slam dunk for me became a wait-and-see-if-it-improves situation instead.
