I could tell that the students felt damaged and in many cases had undergone serious emotional and physical abuse and neglect. While working with these pupils, I began to see a purpose for my growing up feeling damaged. Having experienced the damaged goods syndrome, I was able to empathize with my students who felt damaged while inspiring them to look beyond their damaged state and play an active role in determining their own destiny rather than being relegated to obscure, backseat living.

Wooden A very intriquing book which intimately chronicles life in rural Georgia for the author and his family from depression to integration. I thoroughly enjoyed his life stories seeded in poverty, segregation, and disability then overcoming these barriers to achieve the American dream. This is a must read for anyone who wants to succeed despite how others perceive them. Thank you Doc for sharing your story with all of us.
