For the first time, readers will experience America’s gravest crisis through the eyes of the five former presidents who lived it. Author and historian Chris DeRose chronicles history’s most epic Presidential Royal Rumble, which culminated in a multi-front effort against Lincoln’s reelection bid, but not before:     * John Tyler engaged in shuttle diplomacy between President Buchanan and the new Confederate Government. He chaired the Peace Convention of 1861, the last great hope for a political resolution to the crisis. When it failed, Tyler joined the Virginia Secession Convention, voted to leave the Union, and won election to the Confederate Congress.     * Van Buren, who had schemed to deny Lincoln the presidency, supported him in his efforts after Fort Sumter, and thwarted Franklin Pierce's attempt at a meeting of the ex-Presidents to undermine Lincoln.     * Millard Fillmore hosted Lincoln and Mary Todd on their way to Washington, initially supported the war effort, offered critical advice to keep Britain at bay, but turned on Lincoln over emancipation.      * Franklin Pierce, talked about as a Democratic candidate in 1860 and ’64, was openly hostile to Lincoln and supportive of the South, an outspoken critic of Lincoln especially on civil liberties. After Vicksburg, when Jefferson Davis’s home was raided, a secret correspondence between Pierce and the Confederate President was revealed.     * James Buchanan, who had left office as seven states had broken away from the Union, engaged in a frantic attempt to vindicate his administration, in part by tying himself to Lincoln and supporting the war, arguing that his successor had simply followed his policies.      How Abraham Lincoln battled against his predecessors to preserve the Union and later to put an end to slavery is a thrilling tale of war waged at the top level of power.

The Presidents' War: Six American Presidents and the Civil War That Divided Them, by Chris DeRose

Review At the time of Abraham Lincoln's election to president, five former presidents were still alive-an unprecedented and never-again achieved number. Derose provides a fresh look at the politics of the Civil War by focusing on the interactions between the eloquent and passionate Illinoisan and predecessors John Tyler, Franklin Pierce, Martin Van Buren, James Buchanan, and Millard Fillmore. He reveals the former presidents' opposition to Lincoln's presidency and many of his now-historic positions, such as the Emancipation Proclamation, and their constant fight against Lincoln's administration. Derose sets this thorough and fascinating history in a well-developed and rich foundation of the presidencies and politics leading up to Lincoln's two terms, and he concludes by pointing out the way Lincoln changed the presidency as his predecessors had feared: into a 'dynamic' and 'powerful force for principle,' which was for Lincoln the principle of freedom for all men. . . .[T]his book is a well-written, thorough, and engaging look into a unique political situation in American history. (Publishers Weekly)“When Abraham Lincoln became president in 1861, five former presidents were still alive—a fact unique in American history. In this discerning book, Chris DeRose shows that all of them had opposed Lincoln’s election, none supported his determination to resupply Fort Sumter, John Tyler became a Confederate and Franklin Pierce a Copperhead, Martin Van Buren’s and James Buchanan’s support for the Union war effort was lukewarm, and the three men still alive in 1864 (including Millard Fillmore) opposed the Emancipation Proclamation and Lincoln’s re-election. In effect, Lincoln presided over the preservation of the Union and abolition of slavery without the support of his predecessors in the presidency.”          —James M. McPherson, Civil War historian, multi-volume author, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era “No American president ever came to office facing a graver crisis--or a larger group of unpredictable predecessors--than Abraham Lincoln. There have been thousands of books about Lincoln and the Civil War, but this is the first to explore these subjects through the ongoing stories of the ex-presidents who remained active, influential, and occasionally treacherous as the Union sought to save itself. Chris DeRose is to be congratulated for finding an entirely new way to revisit the Civil War.”          —Harold Holzer, chairman, Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation “The Presidents’ War sheds new light on a forgotten aspect of America’s national tragedy, chronicling a neglected but highly significant array of chief executives.”          —David Pietrusza, historian and award-wining author of 1920: The Year of the Six Presidents “As Abraham Lincoln struggled to save the union during his presidency, his predecessors looked on with a skeptical and sometimes critical eye. They, too, had addressed the issues of slavery, sectional stresses, and national unity. Their solutions had not stood the test of time, yet they had little empathy for their successor. In a gripping, lively narrative informed by current scholarship, Chris DeRose tells the story of how former presidents Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Milliard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, and James Buchanan judged Lincoln and the war they had failed to prevent.”          —Brooks D. Simpson, Professor of History at Arizona State University and award-winning author of Ulysses S. Grant: Triumph over Adversity, 1822–1865 “If you think there is nothing new to say about the American Civil War, Chris DeRose, one of the most imaginative scholars of the period, will surprise you with this fresh look through the eyes, deeds, and words of the six American presidents living at the time shots were fired upon Fort Sumter. Exhaustively researched, elegantly written, DeRose’s book offers discerning insights into the contributions and foibles of presidents you may have thought were familiar, but who in DeRose’s skilled hands you discover you hardly knew. Superb history and a must-have addition to anyone’s Civil War library!”          —Scott Farris, author of Almost President: The Men Who Lost the Race but Changed the Nation and Kennedy and Reagan: Why Their Legacies Endure

By Garry Boulard Disclosure: I am the author of the Expatriation of Franklin Pierce, which is referenced in this book several times.Chris DeRose has taken on a project that might have proved daunting in less skilled hands: the response of five ex-U.S. presidents to the Civil War, and their complicated relationships with one another as well as the sixth president who was in charge of that war, Abraham Lincoln. This means that DeRose essentially has six separate stories to tell as well as a seventh: the events that led up to the war and the war itself. And somehow he manages this feat well, moving the narrative along in a way that never gets bogged down, providing crisp and clear portraits of Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, and, of course, Lincoln.Readers who have become accustomed to the idea that the presidents between Jackson and Lincoln encompass one endless series of boring failures, be warned: DeRose documents that the presidents from this era who were still alive by the time of Lincoln's inaugural were intelligent, strong-willed men with decided points of view, policy goals and political skills. Whether any of them could have handled the complexities of secession and the Civil War as well as Lincoln did is highly debatable, yet it can't be denied that four of the five ex-presidents (Tyler, a Virginian, threw in with the secessionists after exhausting all other options), wanted to see the Union preserved, and three (Van Buren, Fillmore and Pierce) found slavery morally repugnant. To some degree this book reminds me of Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy's highly popular 2013 book, the President's Club, which documents the special relationship enjoyed between current and ex-presidents. Why the perspective and insight of the former presidents in 1861 even mattered was because the country was coming apart and people were afraid, turning to their former leaders for guidance and leadership. And all five of the ex-presidents answered the bell, but in entirely different ways that makes DeRose's book a fascinating read. The Presidents' War is noteworthy for one other reason as well: while most historians through the generations have had a great time tearing to shreds the presidents who immediately preceded Lincoln, DeRose has no axe to grind. He gives us honest, straight-forward presentations of who these men were, what they stood for, and then leaves it up to the reader to decide their merits.

"The Presidents' War" tells the story of the five former Presidents of the United States that lived to see America plunged into civil war. Often maligned or ignored, these men were intimately involved in efforts to avert the War at its start. In the years following, some rallied their countrymen and one - John Tyler - became a traitor to the country he once led. What most accounts of the antebellum presidents miss is that these men were actually fascinating, if disappointing in different ways. Rather than an analysis of policies or appointments or a dry recitation of the less interesting facts of their lives, DeRose writes with a storyteller's eye, sharing anecdotes which would interest anyone. The narrative is excellent; the pacing is perfect; the selection of vignettes and command of facts is unmatched. It amply deserves five stars.

Interesting but incomplete By Christopher Barat When Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860, five of his predecessors were still alive and active, a record that still stands. As author DeRose reveals in this unusual look at the antebellum and Civil War eras, this was a decidedly mixed blessing. Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, and James Buchanan had all governed in the great Era of Compromise, in which effort after effort was made to hold the Union together in the face of the growing controversies over slavery. Each had to make his own version of a "deal with the devil" to preserve the status quo. The Lincoln years split the ex-Presidents asunder, just as the Civil War split the country as a whole. Tyler joined the Confederate cause wholeheartedly, working to take Virginia out of the Union and serving in the Confederate congress for a time before his death. Pierce became a Copperhead, or Peace Democrat. The much-maligned Buchanan turned most of his attention to various attempts to salvage what remained of his reputation after his one disastrous term, which had ended with a number of states seceding. Even Fillmore, who (at least in DeRose's telling) comes off better than any of his Democratic peers in terms of energy and ambition, broke angrily with Lincoln after the latter announced the Emancipation Proclamation and broadened the war's moral scope. Perhaps symbolically, Van Buren, the oldest of the five and the one whose lifetime stretched back to the difficult Revolutionary War era, seems to have been the most uniformly supportive of Lincoln's policies, though he died before Emancipation became an issue.DeRose does a decent job of weaving the actions and reactions of the ex-Presidents in and out of his narrative. The main problem here is that the wartime narrative, in particular, gets too much attention. The time spent reiterating the well-known results of various battles could have been better spent expanding upon the ex-Presidents' views. The book also ends rather abruptly, at the end of the war, with three of the five exes still alive. I would have liked to have seen an epilogue that discussed how their feelings towards Lincoln and the war effort may have changed (if, in fact, they did) and how they may have felt about the war's impact on their legacies. I could also have done without some of DeRose's clunky grammar and troubles with dates (he has an annoying tendency to record days absent years). Still, I appreciate his efforts here. These may not have been America's best and/or brightest leaders, but it is useful to know what they thought and said about Lincoln and the war that forever sundered their time from the very different future that was to come.

The thrilling first-ever biography of Proust translator C. K. Scott Moncrieff, penned by his great-great-niece"And suddenly the memory returns. The taste was that of the little crumb of madeleine which on Sunday mornings at Combray (because on those mornings I did not go out before church-time), when I went to say good day to her in her bedroom, my aunt Léonie used to give me . . ." With these words, Marcel Proust's narrator is plunged back into the past. Since 1922, English-language readers have been able to take this leap with him thanks to translator C. K. Scott Moncrieff, who wrestled with Proust's seven-volume masterpiece―published as Remembrance of Things Past―until his death in 1930. While Scott Moncrieff's work has shaped our understanding of one of the finest novels of the twentieth century, he has remained hidden behind the genius of the man whose reputation he helped build. Now, in this biography―the first ever of the celebrated translator―Scott Moncrieff's great-great-niece, Jean Findlay, reveals a fascinating, tangled life. Catholic and homosexual; a partygoer who was lonely deep down; secretly a spy in Mussolini's Italy and publicly a debonair man of letters; a war hero described as "offensively brave," whose letters from the front are remarkably cheerful―Scott Moncrieff was a man of his moment, thriving on paradoxes and extremes. In Chasing Lost Time, Findlay gives us a vibrant, moving portrait of the brilliant Scott Moncrieff, and of the era―changing fast and forever―in which he shone.

A Remarkable Career of a Remarkable Man By James Connelly One knew Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff from his translations of Stendhal, Pirandello, the Song of Roland, the Duc de Lauzun, the Letters of Abelard and Heloise, and, most especially, Marcel Proust. But one little suspected his many other dimensions: critic, poet, soldier, spy, saucy and sometimes salacious wit, guardian and provider to his many, fatherless nieces and nephews, Catholic convert, child of an attentive, loving, and independent-minded mother (who read Ruskin, one of Proust's favorite authors, to Charles as a child), discreet homosexual, ardent Scot -- a literary figure who had the admiration of contemporaries of no less stature than Conrad, Eliot, Coward, Chesterton, Pirandello, Waugh, Graves, Owen, and many others. It amazes you that he packed so much into a life of only forty-one years, the last third of which was spent in chronic pain from trench fever and from war wounds received while leading his men in an assault on the German lines at Monchy on St. George's Day, 23 April 1917. (Following multiple surgeries and repeated convalescence, he continued to serve in military intelligence despite the severity of his wounds; and he kept his faith in Britain's cause.) After the war, though haunted by the deaths of many friends and family members, Scott Moncrieff worked hard to establish himself. He not only translated "Swann's Way", but corresponded with Proust the month before the author's death; and, in fact, he began his translation of "Swann's Way" as a labor of conviction of its high merit, well before he found a publisher for it. His translation is thus the only one by a Proust contemporary, who shared the sensibility of that early modern era. He championed Proust's work after his death in 1922 by persuading twenty literary figures of the day to contribute to the 1923 "Marcel Proust: An English Tribute" that kept Proust's burgeoning reputation alive and growing. For all the criticism (some of it fair, some just carping) of Scott Moncrieff's translation of "À la recherche du temps perdu", Scott Moncrieff's efforts speedily introduced Proust to English readers in the British Isles and North America. He persisted despite risks from the censors and despite the serious textual problems (especially, but not only, in the posthumous titles) of the initial Gallimard French edition of "Recherche" (later called the "abominable" edition by Samuel Beckett). Scott Moncrieff worked swiftly, lest Proust's premature death dampen the growing interest in his novel. In less than a decade, Scott Moncrieff translated and published all of "Recherche," save only the final title "Le Temps retrouvé": Only Scott Moncrieff's early death cut short his plan to complete the translation. It is an indication of the continued value and influence of Scott Moncrieff's Proust translation that Yale University Press and preeminent Proust scholar William Carter have embarked on a project, over the next few years, to revise and annotate Scott Moncrieff's translation of Proust's novel in light of the authority of the late-1980s Pléiade edition of "Recherche" -- an editorial resource unavailable to Scott Moncrieff as successive titles of "Recherche" came out following World War I. The first title in the Yale-Carter project, "Swann's Way," was issued in November 2013 to mark the anniversary of the publication of "Du côté de chez Swann"; and other titles are to follow at roughly annual intervals.

Interesting for two reasons -- a nugget of Proustiana, and a biography of an unusual Scot By David Tooke This is an interesting book for two categories of readers, I think -- (1) those who enjoy Proustiana, and (2) those who enjoy biographies of eccentric Englishmen of the 1910-1930 period. I happen to belong in both categories. However, those who only are interested in the Proust part will find, probably, only about 15 pages of this very interesting. Those pages are, however, QUITE interesting. It is a happy mystery that Proust's work found, accidentally, such a good translator so quickly. Now, CKSM's methods, approach and results as a translator will always be controversial -- partly because any translation is a stretch, and partly because the professoriat cannot be happy to give CKSM, a non-academic, his due. His method was quite odd. (His Stendhal translations are still among the best available and show that he was, simply, a gifted translator, and didnt just get lucky because he was "first" onto Proust.) However, I believe that any sensitive Anglophone reader will find CKSM's version (as cleaned up by Terence Kilmartin) seductive and full of the authentic Proustian note. (Compare the recent "new" translations edited I think by Lydia Davis.....not many major changes, and very unclear what changes there are, are improvements). Yes, he sometimes speaks in a dated tone, but would you expect a Frenchman born in 1870 and writing about a pre-WW I world to sound modern to 2014 ears?Of course, Proust did not read CKSM's translation and, given his poor knowledge of English (he couldn't have written his Ruskin book if his mother hadn't helped him with the English text), would not have been able to judge it even if he had. This book does discuss (though this info is available elsewhere too) Marcel's interesting note to CKSM about the title "Swann's Way" (we will leave aside the choice of "Remembrance..." which everyone understood (most English people who read Proust early had enough French to know without a doubt the title had been loosely translated, with no effort to just transliterate the phrase) was not literal but suggestive, and which I defend on the grounds that "In Search of Lost Time" is not idiomatic English and sounds, frankly, silly (in English); we don't "search" for "lost time". How would one "search" for "lost time"? (And in French, "recherche" is not exactly a "search"). "Thinking About [One's] [The] [Lost] Past" is perhaps the closest close-to-literal way to think about the title in English, but the Shakespearean phrase used by CKSM is close enough. One thing Proust isn't is silly, and CKSM was in my view correct in not using a risible title. To return to Proust's note on "Swann's Way" -- if I am reading Proust's note properly, he seems to think that in English (again, a language Marcel did NOT understand at all well) readers would have thought the title meant something like "Swann's Way of Life" rather than (as he intended) something like "The Way to Swann's Place". I tend to think the "willed ambiguity" of "Swann's Way" works beautifully -- suggesting to me (if not to a non-English speaker, i.e,, Proust himself) -- mostly a geographical reference to Swann, but with an undercurrent also of "Swann's Way of Life." The material here about how "Sodom et Gomorrhe" became "Cities of the Plain" is also interesting. We can all agree that "Within a Budding Grove" is not the happiest choice of CKSM (and his publisher), but the contemporary correspondance indicating that a "jeune fille en fleur" was understood at the time to refer to a girl reaching the age of menarche perhaps puts the pudeur of the publisher in perspective.

By Warbird This excellent biography of the man who made A la recherche du temps perdu available in English translation has been published in Britain but weirdly not in the United States. What is Random House thinking? All the dreck that is published every year, and something that is unique and worthwhile gets passed over! (Later: I see that Farrar, Straus has picked it up, and will release it in February. Good for them!)C. K. Scott Moncrieff was an interesting man and a wonderful product of the post-Victorian society into which he was born. Though a Scott (which is why his double-barrel surname has no hyphen) he is the very model of an Englishman, as he proved in the trenches of the First World War. His great-grand-niece does a splendid job of telling us about his family, his education, and his military service -- which to an American is quite startling, with Scott Moncrieff seemingly spending as much time relaxing in hospitals and gentlemen's clubs as he does fighting the war. That's not to belittle his courage, however; it just reflects the times he lived in. He was wounded in action, and his wounds very likely shortened his life.Postwar he found a career as a journalist, poet, and -- above all -- translator. His production was prodigious. Simply reading Marcel Proust in translation is a year's work for an individual of above-average intelligence, but Scott Moncrieff translated six out of seven books in the very few years that were granted to him, meanwhile rendering other French classics into the English language. (Reading "Chasing Lost Time" inspired me to go to my bookcase and inspect my venerable paperback of "The Charterhouse of Parma." Sure enough, it was a Scott Moncrieff translation.) And all this time, he wrote for magazines and newspapers, lived an active homosexual life in a time of peril for homosexuals, and spied for the British government. The author makes a great deal of Scott Moncrieff's spycraft, but there are very few details in her book to support her argument. I suspect that it was largely a volunteer, amateur effort, much like the "spying" done by American pilots in China in the 1930s.Scott Moncrieff died at the age of forty of oral cancer, which the author rather surprisingly links to his sex life. There are other oddities in her account, including her take on "Remembrance of Things Past," as the translator mistakenly titled the six volumes of Proust that he was able to finish before his death. Recall that he began his project before Marcel Proust had finished his, so that he simply didn't know all of what Proust had in mind. (Proust is far from REMEMBERING the past; he is FINDING it anew.) But the value of those translations is attested by Yale University Press, which is issuing a modernized and Americanized and corrected version of Scott Moncrieff's work, starting with Swann's Way, edited by William Carter.

The story is powerful and really made me think. I read these books for fun. This book had characters who were sadistic. It wasn't sexy but more like a warning. Shane

Review Ray Walsh (Book reviewer for the Detroit Free Press & owner of Curious Books in Lansing MI) had this to say:"Traveling Circus by author/illustrator Ingar Rudholm is a well-designed 166-page paperback that's aimed at young adults, although it's also likely to appeal to older readers....This fast-paced memorable tale deals with decision-making, confidence and belief in oneself - with a touch of magic thrown in for good measure."freep.com/story/entertainment/2016/03/10/michigan-books-authors-peninsulam-publishing/81613200/Muskegon Tribune: "Novel by Whitehall native brings self discovery and art to young adults through the adventures of a circus boy."

By bellaclk Rudholm cleverly weaves together a tale of self-revelation combined with the beauty and wonder of the world of art. This book is a fantastic journey of self-discovery while reminding us that we all possess the power inside to become who we were really meant to be. I would highly recommend this to anyone between the ages of 12 to 14, and to any art teacher who wants to introduce kids to art in a creative way.

Taking you through a world so real, you could walk into the circus and meet these characters. This book is great for anyone looking for a thrilling adventure.

Newbegin The way the author sets up and describes the scenes and events of the book I felt like I was experiencing the circus myself. I was also impressed to find out the author is also the illustrator that did the cover art and images in the book. I hope to see more books by him and be lost in a new adventure. After reading this book I plan on sharing it with my 10 year old daughter who is very artistic/creative and reminds me very much of the main character in this story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very good read -- I highly recommend By Mike This book is a great read for anyone who has ever wanted to own--or invest in--real estate. The author, who obviously has a deep understanding of his topic, breaks r.e. investing down into very simple terms. He introduced strategies that I was familiar with, yet he did it in a way that showed the nuts and bolts of it. He also introduces a couple of advanced concepts, but it's put into terms that I (or anyone) could understand. The book is not a bunch of useless investing theory like others I've read. The author tells stories of his own real estate deals to illustrate his points. (Even his mistakes.) This is real-world application, and I liked that.If you want a methodical, real-life adventure into the world of making good money with property, I highly recommend this book. I finished it in a matter of days and will probably read it again in a few months.Troy demonstrates that ANYONE can do this, and proves it with the stories of the beginner students he coaches. As for me, I had one house already, but after reading 7 Steps to Real Estate Riches, I will be adding more soon!Thank you Troy!

This is a story about a family of warriors led by the oldest brother, Jack. The growth of this high spirited brood occurred during post WWI, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression and WWII. Their parents were second generation pioneers of North Central Texas and still farmed the overused land. Their sense of duty to raise seven sons and a daughter to be stalwart citizens transferred to their offspring and became manifest at the appearance of war clouds in the late thirties and early forties. Their grit forged the determination to do their dreadful duty. Their mother would suffer from a firm opposition to killing. The story follows Jack through the years of WWII as he led his brothers in spirit and his men into battle. His final actions would lead to both death and glory. One brother would join him in the Battle of Knight's Hill. His other brothers were inspired to fight with great courage in this and future wars. Much later his nephews would serve with distinction in Vietnam, Kobar Towers in Saudi Arabia and in Germany. This book on its face, is about heroes, but at its heart is a plea for sanity in world politics. It was written for the edification, enlightenment and amusement of its readers.

My Brother Jack, by Bill Knight

About the Author Soon after Jack was killed, I formed this notion that somehow, to show my devotion to Jack's memory, I would think about him at least once every day of my life. I was shocked a few years later when I realized that it had been days or perhaps weeks since I had given him any thought. I had become too involved in my own life to spend time on obsessions. Since my retirement, I rediscovered the obsession. As a child, I was the fortunate recipient of a lot of positive regard, much of it undeserved. I actually thought that I was supposed to excel at the things I did. Mixed with this was no small amount of entitlement. However, as soon as I started college in a larger pond, these notions were knocked out of me. I kept plugging along, going to college, spending two obligatory years in the army, and working. I had little natural inclination toward warrioring. I received four degrees: the A.A. from Weatherford College, B.S. and M.S. from North Texas State University, and a Ph.D. in school administration from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M, Commerce). I married Shirlene Leach, a great, bright and beautiful little blonde who thought she could do anything I could do. She did, except her last degree is designated ED.D. in Special Education. I taught, was a principal, and spent 27 years as a school superintendent. Shirlene has taught for 36 years, getting a late start after serving as my blonde scholarship, working in a bank as a bookkeeper, teller and secretary to the president. We have three sons, Matt, Scott and Joe. Scott, who also served in the army for four years, has a M.S. degree in school administration and is a school principal. Joe has a B.A. in English and is a graduate of the National Shakespeare Conservatory of New York City. He worked in management at Arena Stage Theatre in Washington, D.C. He is married to Andrea Maida, an actress/Pilates instructor and in general a highly talented, delightful lady. Scott and his beautiful wife Denice, a master teacher, have given us three beautiful and bright granddaughters, Becca, Bethanne, and Hannah. Shirlene spoils them. I just love them. Matt is a heck of a golfer and a great lawn care specialist. He is also one of the bravest men I have ever known, having battled schizophrenia-induced demons for more than a quarter century.

If you are tired of the public school system telling you what they are going to do instead of asking you, if you are appalled by the Common Core or its many other names. You need to remember how it was when we grew up. The Education Animal is a personal history and a dissertation, if you will, of how education can get out of control and really hurt you or how you can harness it and tame the education animal once again.
