In his best-selling autobiography, Albert Speer, Minister of Armaments and chief architect of Nazi Germany, repeatedly insisted he knew nothing of the genocidal crimes of Hitler’s Third Reich. In this revealing new biography, author Martin Kitchen disputes Speer’s lifelong assertions of ignorance and innocence, portraying a far darker figure who was deeply implicated in the appalling crimes committed by the regime he served so well. Kitchen reconstructs Speer’s life with what we now know, including information from valuable new sources that have come to light only in recent years, challenging the portrait presented by earlier biographers and by Speer himself of a cultured technocrat devoted to his country while completely uninvolved in Nazi politics and crimes. The result is the first truly serious accounting of the man, his beliefs, and his actions during one of the darkest epochs in modern history, not only countering Speer’s claims of non-culpability but also disputing the commonly held misconception that it was his unique genius alone that kept the German military armed and fighting long after its defeat was inevitable.

Review "A devastating portrait of an empty, narcissistic and compulsively ambitious personality."—Wall Street Journal (Wall Street Journal)“A 200,000 word charge sheet. Kitchen is steely, dogged and attentive to the small print. He shows Speer no mercy, nailing his every exculpatory ruse and demonstrating time and again how provisional the notion of truth was to him.”—Jonathan Meades, London Review of Books (Jonathan Meades London Review of Books 2016-02-04)"Kitchen, the author of a dozen works on 20th-century Germany, comprehensively disassembles Speer's alibis and excuses in this new book. His mastery of the revisionist evidence against Speer is complete."—John Fund, National Review Online (John Fund National Review Online)"Excellent. . . . Kitchen brings to this book an unrelenting appetite for the truth and a piercing style."—Robert Fulford, National Post (Robert Fulford National Post)

Kitchen has a wealth of detail about Speer's machinations once he becomes Armaments Minister, but he handles it very clumsily and confusingly, shifting time frames, alluding to minor details one doesn't remember - and often simply not making clear personal pronoun references like "he" when two or more possibilities exist in the previous sentence. (Yale gets very bad marks for not having assigned a competent editor to this project.) He (Kitchen) tacks on biographical material in mostly sparse helpings, then inexplicably does things like provide a detailed account of prosecution and defense closing briefs at Nurnberg - presented in the form of a detailed gloss that, once again, confuses the reader about timing. A shorter, purely scholarly book presenting the period from Todt's death to the end of the war could have been a contribution to scholarship; but it would have had to be handled much more deftly than Kitchen has done here. Definitely not for the common reader.

Archer A lifetime of hearing Albert Speer called "the good Nazi" (as if that was even possible) had me believing the myth. He had me - and the rest of us - fooled. The fact is that the man was just another shallow, groveling, grasping Hitler sycophant. His apologists still say that, like the rest of these rats, he had no choice. You had to go along with the Nazis or die. Which is nonsense. Speer wanted the glory and the prestige and the accolades worse than he wanted to be a decent human being. This is a sad tale of a small man with modest talents who rose to the very pinnacle of power under one of the worst monsters the world has ever seen and did it with his eyes wide open.It was only his heart and his conscience he kept closed. Until it was time to try and save his own neck.

By Great Faulkner's Ghost Speer was an enigmatic figure, a confident of Hitler and a devoted Nazi, and yet a man of immense organizational ability, and more than a little personal charm. My interest in this book was largely about how Speer managed to escape the hangman at Nuremberg, when so many less-implicated Nazis did not. Kitchen's conclusion is that Speer was the first, and perhaps the only major Nazi leader to never attempt the evasive "I was only following orders" defense, which proved so vain for the other major figures. In other words, he took personal responsibility for being part of the Nazi regime. What is so troubling, however, is that while he conceded "guilt" in the legal sense, he never truly expressed genuine personal remorse. Kitchen presents this apparent paradox well, and with the well-deserved disdain it deserves. He also suggests that the Court may mot have been fully aware of the extent to which Speer personally participated in the slave labor camps that killed so many people. Perhaps we will never know, but this book presented many worthy insights into the life of this historical enigma. .
