A wonderful source of inspiration and knowledge By Shari McKinney I am also an educator whose son was diagnosed with a learning disability and auditory processing delay. I just finished Barbara and David Curry's book. It was an amazing read on many levels. I wish I had it available to me when my son was first diagnosed. My son is now an adult who has struggled but obtained a diploma in high school and finally a degree in college. When I read this book, I relived so much of my past-- both good and bad. I was motivated to reach out to my son and talk through a few of David's excerpts. My son stated he had many of the same experiences and feelings David did. This is a powerful read and lets parents and students know they are not alone in this uphill battle.

Arthur Frommer's Europe (Color Complete Guide), by Arthur Frommer, Stephen Brewer, Jason Cochran, Teresa Fisher, Lucy Gillmore, Patricia Harris, Stephen Keeling, David Lyon, John Newcombe, Margie Rynn, Donald Strachan

About the Author The son of a Polish-born mother and an Austrian-born father, Arthur Frommer was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, but was stationed in Europe because of his fluency in German and Russian. During his service, he wrote and self-published a guidebook called The GI's Guide to Traveling in Europe in 1955 that was an immediate hit among his fellow soldiers. In 1957, Frommer created a civilian version called Europe on 5 Dollars a Day, which became an overnight best seller. He subsequently published guidebooks covering all parts of the globe. Frommer licensed his travel guide book business to Simon & Schuster in 1977. Eventually, the Frommer's series was purchased by John Wiley & Sons, and in August 2012, Google purchased the travel guides. Through all the exchanges, Arthur Frommer was always deeply involved with the guide books. In 2013, Frommer reacquired control of the guidebooks bearing his name and has come full circle, now self-publishing his iconic travel books again. Additionally, Arthur Frommer writes a travel column syndicated through King Features with his daughter Pauline Frommer, with whom he also co-hosts a weekly syndicated radio show, "The Travel Show with Arthur & Pauline Frommer." Arthur resides in New York City.Stephen Brewer has been writing travel guides for almost three decades. As an editor and writer, he has focused on European coverage for such magazines as Esquire, Connoisseur and Geo. He has written several previous guides for Frommer's and Insight, as well as authoring Beautiful Small Coastal Towns for Rizzoli. Stephen resides in New York City.Jason Cochran was twice awarded Guide Book of the Year by the Lowell Thomas Awards (Society of American Travel Writers) and once by the North American Travel Journalists Association. His writing has appeared in the New York Post, Entertainment Weekly, Travel + Leisure, USA Today, and Budget Travel, among many others. Jason has appeared as a host and commentator on CBS, Fox and AOL, to name a few. He currently edits Frommers.com. Jason resides in New York City.Author, photographer and travel writer Teresa Fisher has had a life-long love affair with Switzerland, since her first visits to the ski slopes as a young child. Since then she has written extensively on the country for a variety of publishers including Frommer’s, National Geographic and Thomas Cook. She is National Geographic Expeditions’ Switzerland expert and lecturer. She has also penned over thirty guidebooks and children’s travel reference books on a wide variety of destinations worldwide, and features periodically on BBC local radio as a travel adviser. Her travel features have appeared in such British publications as The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and the Sunday Times. For seven years, she lived in the Alps. Now, a mother of two, a fluent French and German speaker and a graduate in classical music, she is based in Gosport in the UK, but still spends much of her time skiing, sight-seeing or hiking in the Swiss Alps.Lucy Gillmore was the deputy travel editor at The Independent, but after eight years on the travel desk left London to move to Scotland. She specializes in travel and food and writes for newspapers such as The Guardian, The Independent and The Times and magazines including Food and Travel, Olive, House & Garden and Conde Nast Traveller. She also updated the Wallpaper City Guide to Edinburgh. After a couple of years in Edinburgh she headed even further north and now lives in the hills above Loch Ness in the Highlands.Patricia Harris and David Lyon drove almost every twisting mountain road as they researched three previous Frommer's guidebooks about Spain. As much as they enjoy the countryside, they find themselves inexorably drawn to the great cities of Madrid and Barcelona, where Spanish life and culture are writ large. Founders of HungryTravelers.com, they have a deep appreciation for the perfect codfish croqueta, an honest plate of patatas bravas, or a heap of peel-and-eat-garlic shrimp, ideally consumed at an outdoor table in one of Barcelona's ancient squares or at the crowded bar in a Madrid taberna. They write about travel, food, wine, spirits and contemporary art for journals as varied as the Robb Report, the Boston Globe and Westways. They reside in Boston, MA.Stephen Keeling has written for Frommer's for two decades. He has also written for the Independent, Daily Telegraph, various travel magazines, and numerous travel guides as well as authored the award-winning Frommer's Family Travel Guide to Tuscany and Umbria. It contains the current thinking of the famous Arthur Frommer regarding the ten major western European countries to which Americans travel. The preeminent authority on world travel, Arthur Frommer sets forth the pros and cons of each country, the major reason why each would be chosen or disregarded, and the key attractions and activities to consider. It also contains a lengthy preface by him dealing with western Europe as a whole, summing up the reasons why we travel there and what we should not miss. It is centered around what I find to be valuable, lengthy excerpts from the key Frommer travel guides dealing with each nation or region, including the top selections of hotels, restaurants, shops and sights by Frommer's foremost authors--all people who actually live in the areas being covered. Just recently the New York Times featured "Arthur Frommer's Europe" in their list of potential gifts to a Europe-bound Americans, which is excellent advice! If you or anyone you know plans on traveling to Europe this is an absolute must! If you haven't planned on traveling to Europe, this book will make you cash in those points and pack your bags! Absolutely inspiring!

Offering specifics on selecting your best lodgings in each country By Shelley Price-Geiger I really found this book very helpful as I explore a trip to Europe. It is clear while reading Mr Frommer's book, that he knows of what he writes, that his lifelong travelling experiences translate into well written commentaries of the ten most heavily visited European nations. I particularly found helpful his comments when he offers specific advice from the recent guidebooks he has published to these nations. Offering specifics on selecting your best lodgings in each country, the places where you are best off dining, the activites and the itinerary that you should follow are invaluably helpful in considering my options.I also found extremely valuable and provocative his well written preface to the book's specific advice, including some though provoking arguments as to why Americans go there. I imagine that this book will set off some very heated discussions and I would think this book is absolutely indispensable for anyone presently considering a trip to Europe.Frommer's Europe is a colorful book, beautifully illustrated. Highly recommend.

Arthur Frommer is the person who set off a torrent of American travel to Europe, and here he is again, summarizing for a modern reader the key elements of travel to the most popular European places. I have given a copy to friends planning to go there in April, and they have already responded that they plan to use it to create their itineraries and their daily activities. And of course, I will be briging along my own copy on a trip that I hope to make soon.

With globalization and shifting economic conditions, the coming decades will be an era of disruption for higher education. Not only are operational inefficiencies raising tuition to unsustainable levels, but traditional learning models and delivery systems are not guiding and inspiring students to reach their potential. With mainstream institutions slow to change, some 50 million working adult students are looking for better options. CHANGING LEVIATHAN uses the success of Bellevue College/University (Bellevue, Nebraska) as it moved from a small, bankrupt college to a leading online university and pedagogical innovator. As president from 1986-2009, Dr. John Muller guided the institution in implementing a truly comprehensive and disruptive approach to increasing the potential of working adults to create value for our economy. The institution's story offers important lessons for higher education in America today. CHANGING LEVIATHAN immerses the reader in the complexities of successful disruption and presents a model for a 21st century university. Bellevue has achieved significant net operating margins solely from tuition revenue while winning national awards for quality and innovation. For anyone interested in higher education today, CHANGE LEVIATHAN is a must-read primer as our educators and administrators work to meet the demands of today's students and design a sustainable future.

This is a rare and honest glimpse into the challenges of higher education; not always pretty, but compelling. Timeless lessons learned could help today's colleges and universities as they struggle to meet changing demands and flat or reduced funding.

Various new templates are part of the discussion. MOOCs, Competency Based Learning, Hybrid education, etc. Significant change is expected. But what direction will this change take? What change will be viable?Possibly "Changing Leviathan" holds various clues for those of us who wish to be part of the best educational institutions. This is a fascinating read about a small but unique university that did not follow the (traditional) rules. It was, as Muller relates, initially shunned by its big campus peers, the peers who also secretly took notes and sought to learn (and later copy) what Bellevue was doing. The change process was lengthy but continuous. Muller relates educational theory, practical insights, and important collaborations with clarity and insight. All are worth noting. No one component alone determined success, but the process is a must read for those seeking ideas to structure future higher education. I emerged with definite clues as to the formulas needed to re-invent world class education. The outcome in this case was exceptional.I've marked and underlined my copy. Muller's ideas are challenging and it is also evident that Muller was a shrewd agent as he crafted a new kind of university. It is also refreshing and affirming to see the role that liberal arts and American values has played in this transformation.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read for Independent College Administrators By Luv to Read Dr. Muller's memoir offers a detailed account of the turn-around of a college on the brink of bankruptcy that instead became a national leader in adult degree completion, online learning, and career-relevant learning. It's a must-read for college leadership — from presidents and board members to administrators — and includes insight into the strategies he used and the challenges he faced, including the entrenched traditions of academia.

I have read it at least eight times, and I enjoy it each time. There is a wonderful rant in the first chapter on why you should make sure your children drink beer and not tea His affection for goats and his reminiscences of them following the British troops (including on and off board ship) during the American revolutionary war are wonderful. It seems to me to make perfect sense that if your family is short on protein, you are better off raising rabbits and getting your children to find hedge parsnips to feed them rather than wasting hours and jail by poaching. He is definitely prone to rants, but they are passionate and interesting and actually make sense in the circumstances he lived in. He is self-taught, so he uses the subjunctive in every instance when his statements deal with intention and probability rather than fact. The description of making beer without the use of strainers (he advises a bundle of birch twigs) takes you into a whole different world.Do not miss the superb reading of this book at librivox.org by Philippa. It will be one of your favorite audiobooks and it costs nothing. Above all, do not miss out on Cottage Economy.Ruellia

An interseting read on techniques for self sufficiency and economics By Scott Mandeville This book is a fun read, informative about some techniques, but a little preachy about the role of women and the burden of taxes. All in all, a fun read for homebrewers and others interested in self sufficiency.

Mr. Cobbett is a very opinionated author, and his perspective on beer is both humorous and interesting for its historical and cultural context. We get a little glimpse of life in early 19th century England, and some of the hot topics of the day, as well as some good ideas for the small farm in the 21st century.

By LilMissMolly Secrets of the Manor House by Hilary Brown is aptly titled, as it's a delightful gem describing the various grand country estates of Great Britain. Besides several large English estates, there are few from Scotland and one in Northern Ireland as well. What I enjoyed most are anecdotes about the scandals and famous happenings over the centuries. For example, Lady Diana's ancestral home is featured and her Spencer ancestors, as is Highclere castle, which is the setting for Downtown Abbey. I found it quite interesting that several plot points in Downtown Abbey came from the history of the Highclere's estate - like housing wounded soldiers from WWI.Melanie Fraser narrated this Audible version and she was outstanding. Her crisp British accent and soft refined tones were perfect for this audio and really set the stage for imagining a tour of these fine estates. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a Whispersync'd version so I could view photos of the grounds and interiors of the manor houses described while listening along. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys exploring many of England's historical sites.

"Wonderful History of Manors and Castles" By Teresa I listened to the Audible audio version of this book.SECRETS OF THE MANOR HOUSE is a fabulous audiobook that tells of the most famous manors and castles including the history of each. To name a few are Highclere Castle where Downton Abbey is filmed and where the original owner discovered the tomb of King Tutankhamen, Hampton Court Palace linked to Henry Vlll, Althorp Manor connected to the Spencer's and Lady Diana, and Ham House that's said to be the most haunted castle in Britain, and many more. I loved listening to this audiobook.MELANIE FRASER has the most lovely voice ever. I could listen to her all day. She was the perfect narrator for this audiobook. I felt as if I've traveled around England, Great Britain, Wales and Scotland with the best tour guide on the planet. She has excellent voice inflections and made this an amazing listen.(I have toured a few castles in Germany and Austria). I love history and this was a great book.Audiobook gifted in exchange for an honest review.

This was a really interesting non-fiction book about the different manors, palaces, etc. in the British Isles. If you have ever watched shows like Downtown Abbey or Upstairs, Downstairs, I think this book will be interesting to you. You will learn about the different places, the history behind them, intrigues that took place in them, and more. One of the most interesting that I learned about was Highclere Castle where Downton Abbey is filmed and where the original owner discovered the tomb of King Tutankhamen. I've always been fascinated with these famous estates, so it was interesting to learn the history behind them. I listened to the Audible version, narrated by Melanie Fraser, enjoyed the narration. Overall, an interesting, short history (I think the audio is about an hour and a half), that is definitely worth listening to.

Best Ebook PDF Science Teachers Who Draw: The Red Is Always There, by Merrie Koester

Science Teachers Who Draw: The Red Is Always There is an invaluable resource for teachers, teacher educators, and qualitative researchers. This is a book which asks, "What happens when science teachers adopt an aesthetic approach to inquiry, using drawing and visual thinking to communicate deep understanding?" This narrative inquiry was driven by quantitative studies which reveal a robust positive correlation between students' test scores in reading and science, beginning at the middle school level. When the data are disaggregated, there exists a vast achievement gap for low income and English language learners.  This book is the true story of the academic turnarounds of previously struggling science students when teachers use arts practices to communicate meaning.  By choosing to ditch the safety of lectures and adopt more aesthetic ways of teaching, science educators become performing artists themselves, producing and directing the creation of engaged, jointly produced, and artful learning.   In all ways, students learn that art and science are connected as expressions of human creativity.

Science Teachers Who Draw: The Red Is Always There, by Merrie Koester

Review Merrie Koester has created a well-researched, persuasive and liberating, serious yet playful book that should be required reading for all science teachers and teachers in preparation.  Donald Young, Dean, College of Education, University of University of Hawai'i Mānoa    Merrie Koester's research-based approach empowers students to notice more, connect better, and express themselves visually as well as verbally. This book  provides a powerful resource for every teacher who values creativity and active learning.   Jay Lemke,  University of California-San Diego; author of Talking Science.  Sir Ken Robinson calls for an aesthetic awakening in our schools if we are to engage today's students in thinking and learning.  Merrie Koester takes us into science classrooms and demonstrates how transformational educational change is possible by teaching through aesthetic inquiry. Richard Siegesmund , Head Art+Design Education, Northern Illinois UniversityMerrie Koester has added a valuable tool to our arsenal for achieving science literacy by using art to engage hard to reach students   James Trefil, Clarence Robinson Professor of Physics, George Mason University, author of Why Science?

From the Author At the heart of each of the remarkable teaching performances I observed during this participatory action research was an ethic of care:  care for other, care for content, and care for developing the art that is teaching.  When teachers engage in collaborative curriculum inquiry - respectful co-learning where each self is honored - teachers, students, parents, and schools all benefit.  Above all else, this book is a celebration of what can happen when doing art makes science matter.

From the Back Cover Discover what can happen when science standards are aesthetically explored through drawing in ways that are participatory, transformative, embodied, imaginative, caring, and joyful.  Many previously failing students brokered newly acquired aesthetic capital into improved academic achievement and a sense of felt freedom:It makes me feel like I'm getting help.My attitude is much more joyful and energetic.I want to come to science every day now.It helps me think way better than just listening does.It makes me feel refreshed!

I got this book todayand read it front to back. I couldn't put it down. Some of the storiestouched my heart, nothing is more precious to an educator than those momentswhen learning is truly meaningful. I especially loved the story thatinspired the title. These breakthroughs are what makes teaching the bestjob in the world. The evidence that the simple inclusion of drawinginto classroom practice leads to increased understanding and performance isso powerful. I will be sharing this book with the science teachers at myschool when break is over. I highly recommend this book for teachers in any curricular area, especially those who are interested in incorporating STEAM into their lessons.

This true story of survival, determination, and incredible luck will lift your spirits and inspire you to never give up on your dreams! Some people are born lucky. Others make their own luck. As a boy, Hank wanted nothing more than to fly like the fighter pilots he admires in the skies over Amsterdam. When the lives of Dutch citizens are turned upside down with the Nazi occupation of Holland, his dreams will have to wait as he witnesses the tragic unfolding of events affecting those around him before finding himself in a fight for his own life. He must go into hiding before his sixteenth birthday despite the fact that he is not Jewish. After the war, his life takes another unexpected turn when he is enlisted by his father in the American Army in Germany where his inability to speak English results in hilarious missteps at every turn. He can roll with the punches if the Army will teach him to fly, but when he learns that pilot training stopped with the end of the war, it seems he’ll never reach his goal. Undaunted, Private Hank evolves into a suave and popular soldier. He learns what it means to be American, arriving in America broke but determined to pursue his lofty goals in a manner only this quirky and very lucky Dutch-American would even think of trying, flying by the seat of his pants to some of the highest levels of aviation.

Mr. Gillebaard may be lucky, but he is also smart, daring and resourceful, and it was fun to read of his many adventures. Each chapter is almost like another visit to an older friend who has lived through some historic times and has a new and wonderful tale to tell on every visit. A fine effort by Melissa Guzzetta and most enjoyable read.

The stories were exciting and sometimes sad, but most of the time funny and heartwarming. Wow, what a life he experienced. I recommend this book to anyone, especially those who like a little history with daring adventure.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Powerful Well-Written Story About a Life Fully Lived By Linda Luke I fell in love with Private Lucky. His courage, attitude, and perseverance saw him successfully through life challenges and adventures that would have stopped most of us. He spent his youth hiding from Hitler and bluffed his way into multiple careers, including a Top Gun pilot trainer. What he lacked in resources he made up for with his big heart that didn't understand the meaning of the word, "no". And, what I love most is that instead of feeling like a victim, he tells his story as if he was the luckiest guy in the world.Melissa Guzetta is a talented writer that brought Private Lucky's words to life in this biography that reads like a novel. I wish I had met him and am reminded how many of the older people in our society that are taken for granted have amazing stories to tell.

This timely book meets the demand for more examples of effective technology integration by providing a new conceptual understanding that builds on the popular and highly influential theoretical framework of technological, pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK).

Technology Integration and High Possibility Classrooms details four rich case studies set in different contexts with students ranging from age 6 to 16. Each case study articulates in very practical terms what characterizes exemplary teachers’ knowledge of technology integration and how that is applied in classrooms. Technology Integration and High Possibility Classrooms: Building from TPACK, by Jane Hunter

Review

"Technology Integration and High Possibility Classrooms provides a wonderful look into classrooms to help readers understand how ambitious, effective teachers integrate technology into their teaching. Rather than focusing primarily on the tools, however, Hunter helps the reader to see technology integration through a robust theoretical lens in an approachable, engaging way. This significant contribution to the TPACK literature base is a must-read for doctoral students and classroom teachers who want to approach technology integration in a thoughtful, meaningful manner."

Mark Hofer, Associate Professor of Educational Technology in the School of Education at the College of William & Mary, USA.

"Dr. Hunter's book is a valuable contribution to the field of technologies in education. Well-positioned in research and theory while offering a pleasant, engaging read, it uses an accessible framework to explore what occurs in the classroom and what is possible as we move into changing educational contexts. The cases used illustrate both the affordances and limitations of technologies in classrooms, as well as the need for strong professional learning to support teachers in choosing the most effective means for facilitating and representing student learning."

Debra Bateman, Associate Professor and Deputy Dean, Learning & Teaching, School of Global, Urban and Social Studies, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia

"Hunter’s text is an excellent exemplar for faculty teaching case study research, educational technology, or how theory impacts practice."

Gregory Zobel, Technical Communication

Using HPC to transform classroom practice By Frances Whalan Clearly and concisely presented the High Possibility Classrooms (HPC) model, which arises from Hunter’s observation of four teachers' classroom practice, captures and documents innovative practice that has pedagogy at its heart. What I find interesting is that the HPC model for technology integration diverges from traditional views of ICT integration. Hunter's model is theory-driven technology practice focusing on purposeful planning and teaching, enriched subject matter and thinking and creating that stimulates authentic student engagement. For classroom practitioners, HPC provides instruction for teachers on how to use for example simple pedagogical techniques that make the learning intentions explicit, contribute to students’ enriched knowledge of the subject matter and builds opportunities for creativity and reflection. The chapter on Creating high possibility classrooms is of particular interest as it outlines how the finer detail of HPC can transform into “practice in action” to create motivating and engaging learning spaces and contexts.

Dr Hunter examines the classroom practices of four exemplary teachers. Gina, Gabby, Nina and Kitty are inspiring in their use of technology and in their creativity. In each case study, technology is used to boost student voice, student ownership and self-regulation of learning. The book is packed with new ideas for experienced and less experienced teachers on integrating technology and enhancing creativity in the classroom. It has challenged me to question my practice and reassess my role in the classroom. Gina says, “My students work in a learning community to build meaning of the world out of the learning experiences they engage in. They are on task, they are in task and they are learning for a purpose.” It was interesting and motivating to read how these teachers foster an exciting ‘learning community’ using technology. The HPC conceptions will be a valuable ‘tool’ for guiding my classroom planning and practice from now on.

Excellent resource for ICT integration into the classroom By Brad Murphy I purchased this book a few weeks ago as I am doing a Masters Degree in ICT in Education and seriously implementing ICT into the classroom. This is an excellent resource for a teachers professional library and presents many strategies in how to implement and integrate ICT into classroom teaching. This book is backed by extensive research into what works and includes a strong foundation of educational theory yet at the same time is easy to read and practical in its approach. The model of 'TPACK' with the added layer of 'High Possibility Classrooms' (HPC) means that the teacher following these structures will implement ICT integration far more efficiently and effectively. I highly recommend this book as being top of the list of purchases for anyone who is serious in integrating ICT into their classroom.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Awesome Fantasy. By Justin @ Justin's Book Blog This review comes directly from my book blog. "Justin's Book Blog"I really enjoyed this book. It was the fantasy that I was looking for when I started it, but as with most Fantasy books I read I did have a lot of moments where I felt things were a little slow. I enjoy Fantasy quite a lot though, so it wasn't to big of an issue for me. Elisabeth is one of the youngest author that I have read a book by though, and I think she did an amazing job writing it. Just reading it, I would of never imagined she was such a young writer without having actually known before hand. The story is pretty stunning, she has fantastic world building. And was able to make the book truly feel like this epic adventure, and not just a mediocre fantasy. Being introduced to all the monsters, magic and other awesome things you will come across in this book was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the story though, even though there were a few pacing issues. I think she did a great job trying to make it all feel really fluid, and for the most part I would say she was able to accomplish that. The characters were another amazingly strong feature of the book. When you're dealing with Fantasy characters I feel like you tend to look for a deeper level of character building that you don't really see in other genres. And with that said, I feel like it is extremely difficult for authors to pull off amazing characters within Fantasy books. While I won't go as far as saying these characters were amazing, I would have to say that they were extremely good and very well developed. And also, as with most Fantasy books the character count can sometimes get a little overwhelming. While there is a lot of people that Janir comes across throughout the story, I felt like Elisabeth did a great job at holding back the reigns on the character count. In the end, I felt like this was an excellent book overall. I had very few issues with it, and the ones I did always tend to bug me when it comes to Fantasy. But it's a genre I love, and will never stop reading. Elisabeth really did a wonderful job writing this book, and I love how it all came to a close leading into the second book which I hope to read soon.If you enjoy Fantasy, then I would highly suggest checking this book out. Even if you don't, I think you might surprise yourself if you were to give the book a chance. I hope you all enjoyed this review though, and I hope you'll check out this awesome book whenever you get a chance.

By Sarah (Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis.)Janir is 8 when her father sends her away. She may be the Lord of the Argetallams daughter, but she is also half Brevian (another race who the Argetallams fight with). When her party is attacked and her mother killed, Janir finds herself taken in and raised by a man called Armandius Caersynn, who as it turns out is actually her mother's husband! (Her mother was captured by Argetallams and taken as a courtesan for their Lord!)However, 7 years later, when a visiting duke tries to stab Armandius during a dinner party, Janir finds herself driven mad with anger, and snaps the dukes neck. Knowing that this act will unveil Janir as half-Argetallam, Armandius sends her off to the moutains with a small amount of provisions and a horse, and tells her that he will send someone to find her if he can get her a pardon from the courts.Janir goes off alone with her horse, but soon comes across a sorcerer in a tree (Karile) who she helps. He joins her and they travel along together. Karileis searching for `the key of amatahns', a legend says that all the magical powers of a warrior tribe was locked in a crystal chamber, and sealed with a key - if someone finds they key, and enters the chamber, they will absorb all of the magical powers, making them nearly unlimited magical powers.Karile says that the Argetallam's are looking for the key, and that he wants to find it first and keep it from them, as the Argetallam's are a fierce warrior race, and if they get their hands on the power, it will lead to the end of the world as they know it!Thus is the start of an epic YA fantasy adventure, filled with elves, dwarves, seers, enchantresses, ghosts, and all manner of other strange mythical creatures. This book was a great YA fantasy, and I would say that it is similar to `the lord of the rings', only much easier to read!Janir is such a brave girl, and doesn't let anything phase her. She totally takes every obstacle in her stride, and keeps going even when the situation seems dire! She really does come across all sorts on this adventure though, and there's never a dull moment! This storyline just keeps springing new surprises all the time!I also liked the characters of Karile - the slightly batty sorcerer, and Armandius - Janir's foster father. I also thought that Lucan (Janir's half-brother) was a fantastic adversary. This book is very well written, I don't think I came across a single spelling mistake in the whole book! I would never have guessed that the fantastic author of this book was only 16 when she wrote this! This is truly an amazing achievement! My favourite quote would have to be this one from the seeress - `do not flee from who you are. You will never get away' - so funny and so true!Read this is you're looking for an epic fantasy, that isn't epically long!6 out of 10(Book Length: 4132 kindle locations)

For nearly two decades, pundits have been predicting the demise of higher education in the United States. Our colleges and universities will soon find themselves competing for students with universities from around the world. With the advent of massive open online courses ("MOOCS") over the past two years, predictions that higher education will be the next industry to undergo "disruption" have become more frequent and fervent. Currently a university's reputation relies heavily on the "four Rs" in which the most elite schools thrive―rankings, research, real estate, and rah! (i.e. sports). But for the majority of students who are not attending these elite institutions, the "four Rs" offer poor value for the expense of a college education.

Craig sees the future of higher education in online degrees that unbundle course offerings to offer a true bottom line return for the majority of students in terms of graduation, employment, and wages. College Disrupted details the changes that American higher education will undergo, including the transformation from packaged courses and degrees to truly unbundled course offerings, along with those that it will not. Written by a professional at the only investment firm focused on the higher education market, College Disrupted takes a creative view of the forces roiling higher education and the likely outcome, including light-hearted, real-life anecdotes that illustrate the author's points.

Review

“The rising cost of college tuition, increasing popularity of online courses, and disappointingly low graduation rates from some colleges are among the converging trends challenging the status quo for college education in the U.S...Craig...offers a more encouraging outlook, even in the face of upheaval.” ―Booklist

“Savvy, sharp, and ultimately optimistic, Craig's book offers an ambitious blueprint that administrators would be wise to heed.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“…A lively analysis of the strengths and serious challenges facing higher education… Craig presents exciting ideas about how new pedagogy and individually paced adaptive learning will satisfy students” ―Library Journal

“College Disrupted provides a novel set of suggestions, a blueprint almost, on how college education for the 99%, the non-elites, can and must be transformed to provide a better education at a fraction of the cost. This book will surprise and inform. Its proposals are workable, leveraging technology in meaningful ways for the student, for the college and for employers. This book is an original and will challenge many of our beliefs. I highly recommend it.” ―John Seely Brown, advisor to the provost at the University of Southern California and co-author of A New Culture of Learning – Cultivating the Imagination for a World of Constant Change

“With great clarity and a deft touch, College Disrupted tells the story of how college has become out of reach and out of touch with the needs of students. More important, it points the way to a reconfigured system of higher education which is both affordable and valuable as preparation for career and life.” ―Mitch Kapor, co-chair of Kapor Center for Social Impact and founder of Lotus Development Corporation

“In College Disrupted, Ryan Craig offers the best and most clear-sighted analysis of the dramatic changes underway in higher education, a persuasive argument for how we might re-invent our industry, and does so with a balance of serious mindedness and entertaining readability rare in books of this kind. While many will find his roadmap forward daunting, my colleagues should all read this book and think hard about its implications for their institutions. This is the must-read book for 2015.” ―Paul LeBlanc, president of Southern New Hampshire University

“There's a revolution underway in what we now know as "higher education," and it's dramatically changing what people learn, where they learn it, and how they will use it in work and in life. The revolution is being televised, blogged, tweeted, and MOOC'ed in ways that we could never even have dreamed just a few years ago. In College Disrupted, Ryan Craig chronicles that revolution in a thoughtful and astonishingly clear way, bringing to focus a diverse set of ideas, strategies and concepts that are completely transforming college as we know it. Craig's insightful analysis comes together in a hopeful and practical set of ideas about how to fix what's broken and continue to ensure that Americans gain even greater value from college than ever before--for their benefit individually, and for the collective well-being of all Americans.” ―Jamie Merisotis, president and CEO, Lumina Foundation

“American educational progress will continue to lag as long as the education reform conversation remains polarized. For American higher education to continue to lead the world, we must find ways to get traction for the sorely needed innovations that will improve accessibility, affordability and student outcomes for all Americans. In College Disrupted: The Great Unbundling of Higher Education, Ryan Craig lays out a blueprint for action. His clarity of observation – which is simply stated – creates a compelling burning platform. You can't ignore his assessment; the case is too clear. The recognition of a need for change frequently spurs a bias for action. Efforts sputter when plans to galvanize that bias into measurable change are lacking. What distinguishes College Disrupted is Ryan's ability to skillfully lay out options and a way forward for higher education leaders and policy makers as they take the necessary actions to advance higher education in the United States.” ―Sara Martinez Tucker, chief executive officer of the National Math and Science Initiative

“Colleges impact everyone and every part of American society, but their future is likely to look quite different from their past. In College Disrupted, Ryan Craig illuminates that future and why it matters in an entertaining read.” ―Michael Horn, co-founder and executive director of Clayton Christensen Institute

A Thoughtful and Readable Perspective By Ed from Nevada The author presents an entertaining and readable perspective on higher education and the impending changes the information age may bring. The beginning chapters address the crises the author sees in college education: affordability, governance, and lack of good data. There is not much dispute in the escalating costs associated with the increasingly bureaucratic higher education system. However, the chapter on data points out that the way in which we assess quality is not based in outcome data. So, choosing which college and what to take at what price is the most important life decision we make, yet the information to make an informed decision is lacking. He then reviews the massive open online courses, which have not provided the kind of promise initially dreamed by their proponents. Education means more than logging onto a web video, which should come as no surprise. Next, the traditional bundled college degree is compared to the cable industry: how much unnecessary effort and cost is put into a system in which sitting for a number of hours in class and doing twice that much busywork outside class! Instead, the author would like to move toward a system in which modern computer age technology can individualize education to achieve competence and the time spent would be a function of the individual's need not the traditional framework. Achieving this could bring America's already premier higher education system into an engine of innovation domestically and economically lucrative export industry. The author then presents chapters on the features of the system most ripe for change, and those in which change in likely to be delayed by various stakeholders. Here, the author reveals the shortcomings of employers, government, and academic leadership in responding to these changes. In the end, a two tiered system is predicted with more certificate-like training for the masses and fewer more traditional broad-based college graduates. Since the author works in the industry that seeks to profit from managing this change, he has well reasoned and presented thoughts on the subject. My concern is that he is not unbiased.

If colleges and universities are to avoid being replaced by some creation of Silicon Valley, they're going to have to answer the question of what students are actually learning and demonstrate how their programs benefit students. In the fall of 2013, a survey of over 400 small private and regional state institutions found that nearly half had fallen short of budget enrollment or net tuition revenue. From 2010 through 2012, freshmen enrollment at more than a quarter of U.S. private four-year colleges declined 10% or more. In October 2013, the percentage of 2013 high school graduates who enrolled in higher education was 65.9%, down from 70.1% four years prior.Higher education tuition has increased at double the rate of inflation for over 30 years. The overall price of higher education increased 600% between 1980 and 2010 - more than any other major product or service. (To be fair, the average discount for freshmen at private colleges is now 42%. On the other hand, there's also the important matter of opportunity costs.) In 1975, the average state-supported institution could count on state funding for over 60% of their budgets. Since then, between 1980 and 2011, all states except Wyoming and North Dakota have cut support for higher education by 15 - 70%. While Americans say they value higher education, less than 40% think states should provide more support to colleges. For the typical private sector online program, enrolling a new online student now requires spending $2,000 - $3,000 in advertising. As 50% of online students typically drop out within the first six months, that's $4,000 - $6,000 to acquire one revenue-generating student.Credit transferability makes the affordability problem worse. Students who transferred from a regionally accredited institution lost an average of 12 credits, while those who transferred from a nationally accredited school lost 16 credits.A USA Today 2012 article reported that there are more college graduates working in clerical jobs than in all computer professional jobs, more employed as cashiers, retail clerks and customer representatives than engineers. A 2013 article reported that 15% of taxi drivers, 17% of bellhops and 5% of janitors have college degrees - up from 1% in 1970. Almost half of all college graduates have a job that doesn't require a college degree. ("Job Jugglers on the Tightrope" NYT, 6/25/2011) A 2013 study from MIT and the University of Minnesota argued that any increase in the college-high school income gap since 1960 is the result of declining high school real income as opposed to increasing college income. The study also found that 1990 students graduating from California public colleges had virtually no chance of loan repayments being larger than 15% of their incomes; today, men doing so have a 38% chance and women a 55% chance.Engineering majors are 12 of the top 15 degree programs in terms of starting salary, while other degrees from lower-tier instiututions produce net negative returns for students. At some community colleges, graduation rates are below 10% - incurring debt with no return.Craig sees law schools as the 'canary in the higher education coal mine. Tuition at private law schools doubled in the past 15 years and nearly tripled at public schools while 45% of law school graduates are unable to find a job requiring a JD degree. In 2004, 100,000 applied to law school, only 59,400 in 2013 - the lowest number since 1977 and a 33% drop from 2010. Expect to see dozens of law schools close in the next decade.University trustees face multifaceted, complex, and likely vague missions. This makes it easier for management to run the show and treat the board as its plaything. So we overlook student abuse at Penn State, admit and graduate underqualified student athletes, and from 2000 to 2012, the ratio of instructional non-instructional staff declined 40%. At the University of Michigan, there are 53% more administrators than faculty. U.S. News and others evaluate colleges based on how much they spend/student. Ratings emphasize the 'Four Rs' - rankings, real estate, rah, and research.A 2009 report from the American Enterprise Institute pointed out that over the prior five years, the number of published language and literature 'research' articles had risen from 13,000 to 72,000. A 2005 study in the Journal of Higher Education showed an inverse relationship between the amount of time spent in the classroom and a faculty member's salary. ("Beyond the Rhetoric: Trends in the Relative Value of Teaching and Research in Faculty Salaries.")As a rule, colleges and universities don't track whether students are learning - we don't know what students are supposed to have learned or the extent to which they've done so. We also have no way for adjusting in variations in student capabilities, nor looking down the road at their ultimate achievements. Worse yet, Republicans have led the opposition against the creation of a federal unit record database - it's specifically forbidden in the Higher Education Act, also thanks to education lobbyists. Some states (Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Colorado, Arkansas, and California) have instead created their own longitudinal databases for this purpose. Bill James realized that baseball would never get to rational, data-driven management without the right data. Yet, after five years of trying and failing to convince baseball teams to pay for this new data, STATS Inc. began instead selling the data to fans.

Cloudy forecast for colleges mixed with personal stories By Bosreviewer This book skips around from important points and facts about college trends to personal reminiscences which may be funny to recall at reunion, but get in the way of the arguments. The author includes many "emperor has no clothes" stories about the "non-profits" that serve to enrich everyone but the students. His forecast is that the top colleges will stay the way they are and everything else will be unbundled. He talks about revolutionary times, and there's a missing argument that even more important is to unbundle the top institutions.
