'It's their kill' By Grady Harp Talia Haven is a gifted writer, one unafraid to enter the dark interstices of question of life, death, and the beyond. This little story is very brief, but manages so much power into a few pages that it longs for more story as a novel. Tatiana Vila provides the elegant illustrations.Talia immediately places us within the atmosphere of this magic story in the first paragraph: `A' dab barely heard the metallic jingles of the coins sewn to her hip belt as she whirled alone across the brightly painted tile floor. Soft, thin folds of pale green caressed her ankles, displaying a shadowy hint of thin thighs. Along her forehead, sweat beaded as she danced through warm rays of sunlight that beamed in from narrow slots in the stone walls. Beneath her feet, the story was laid out in order, of how Al-Quan created the Dijon-- from the first male and female, formed from the shifting sands, to the sacred word he spoke that made the Dijon, she told who they are. A'dab's dance, her gift to the divine one, told the entire story.' In exchange for a gold anklet given to A'dab her father presented Al-Quan with two camels - heretofore-unknown animals to all. The animals seemed to be better suited for the people of the realm to carry their heavy belongings and having the large feet, to walk the sands of the desert. A'dab asks her father to make more camels but Al-Quan refuses to allow that to happen. A'dab, feeling for the people, steals the camels and takes them out to the people who celebrate their miraculous gift. A'dab is punished by being attached to a lamp to serve man. `Whenever a mortal calls, just three wishes you will grant. The you will return to your prison to await your next master.' A'dab's gift to man results in her becoming lost in the wilderness. It is rare to discover a writer of this strength in a short story, but this is a writer who deserves out attention. Whether she pursues fantasy or realism, she has the talent to make either work. Grady Harp, March 15

Nicholson "A'dab's Gift" is a short story by author Talia Haven, illustrated by Tatiana Vila. This Kindle e-book was approximately 11 printed pages and sold for $0.99 at time of writing this review. Please Note: I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The Amazon.com product page has this listed in the genre of 'children's ebooks > fairy tale, myths'.General Theme Set in a mythical locale around the time of creation, A'dab, is a young girl in the court of Al-Quan, God of the Caravan. After a series of events, she takes it upon herself to try to do what she feels is the right thing, however Al-Quan takes exception. This then is A'dab's story. Some thoughts on "A'dab's Gift"...First off... a beautiful, gorgeous cover. Stunning! This is a short piece, well written. But I must be honest, it read like a parable. As it was, it just felt incomplete. That there was something missing. And I guess this is why I felt like it had such prominent parable qualities... a lesson to be learned - the end!Events within the story were intriguing enough that "A'dab's Gift" might have been written as a prequel to a full length novel. But as it was, the abrupt ending just left me hanging. As it is... 3 1/2 Stars.Ray Nicholsonraynicholsonsreviews@hotmail.com@ralannicholson

By MA This fantastic, unique short story reads like an allegory echoing the pagan world of gods and mortals. The supreme irony of it is that this god cannot be questioned or be made accountable, for any of his decisions, although he feeds off the mortals - animals from the 'A'dab's father's zoo. A god that makes no concessions to the mortals of the dry land. The narrative stands for an eternal question of exploitation and revolution. Expendable ones are always used to appease the more powerful or better the dictators, never the other way round. And that is the sad fact of life. Set in a captive land of mortals separated by a thin veil of mist from home in the writer Talia Haven's imagination, A'dab's Gift will carry readers through many enchanting descriptions of animals. wood-fire dances of the night haunted by Djinn. However, in futility to be threatened by the god named Al-Quan in the end as his terrible punishment awaits. A'dab a mortal who is no match to his power in the end losses her battles against this god.
