Sarah is the bright non-conformist with the wild, golden locks and a knack for the literary as she pens her cynical blog. Skylar is the last offspring of a human mother but alien father whose civilization planted him to build a future home for the Levant people. Could Skylar, with his superhuman powers, love Sarah enough to not only lose his immortality, but to risk the future of the planet’s population? Perhaps the best minds of his people have come up with a way, but it could mean that Skylar and Sarah would need to kill their own newborn. There is one who would see a different outcome; and longs to make Sarah his own simply because he will not tolerate rejection. Brandon, dark and wicked poses a threat that could tip the scales toward not only the survival of the human race, but its dominance by the darkest side. His power is strong and of the most secret kind; the spawn of a powerful and well-connected man who traipses the world and its black operatives encounters. Can love be the strongest weapon of all?

I loved the acceptance between them and the realism—I could actually see why the two of them would end up together. In some romantic fiction, the couples don’t always seem to be suited for each other except for the fact that one is the female lead and one is male lead, so they have to end up together because the story demands it. The relationship in this book, however, is believable and I very much enjoyed reading about it.

Great villains By maria regina regudo Villains are always my fave part of any story; this is probably because they are typically uninhibited by a moral code, which means they can do pretty much anything, which is always more interesting to me than the straight-arrow who follows all of the rules. This book had some great villains:Brandon: As someone who was mercilessly picked on in school, seeing Brandon, the meathead jock frat boy from hell, cast as a villain brought me an extraordinary amount of joy, perhaps more than is healthy. He is pure evil, with no moral code, no respect for others, and a penchant for violent behavior that has been encouraged, cultivated, and deemed not only acceptable, but necessary by his father. He is the schoolyard bully, only he is the more terrifying college variety that has the size and skills to back him up. He is fun to loathe and easily despised, two qualities that are great in a villain.Mr. Robertson: Brandon’s father, a well-connected rich SOB who is obsessed with his son’s ability to continue his “legacy,” though, to a sane, non-evil person, his legacy would be best left to die and not continue, as it is one of violence and intimidation, of ruthlessness and a touch of sadistic pleasure. When I understood the character of Mr. Robertson, I found myself feeling a little sorry for Brandon, as it seemed like he never had a chance to not lead a violent life, as it was pressed upon him. However, that feeling only lasted a few minutes, until he did something else horrible.Lillie: Lillie is a secondary character and villain and she is the only one of the three that I somewhat dislike. Don’t get me wrong—she’s great as a villain, but she seems like a walking cliché on several levels. First, there are only two female characters in the book, Lillie and Sarah, who are roommates, and there is no dimension to their relationship, just the clichéd “female characters hate other females” approach. Lillie also doesn’t bring anything new as a female villain—she is portrayed as the seductress, the schemer, and the traitor. Oh, and why does she engage in villainous behavior? To get a man and, for some reason, hurt Sarah. However, that said, she seems to be a little naïve for a true villain, as she seems to unaware of the depths of Brandon’s depravity and motives, which makes her more interesting that she might be otherwise.Overall, I’d say that the book was pretty awesome. I can’t wait to start on Part II of the series.

Sure, there are many that seem strong, but poke just below the surface and they collapse like a Jenga tower. However, this is not one of those books. The main female character, Sarah, is hard-as-nails, tough, smart, capable, competent, and brave throughout the whole story. If this were an action movie, she would be the Michelle Rodriguez character that takes no crap and kicks butt. I would love to see more characters like Sarah. The male lead is a bit more generic—your typical “Mr. Wonderful is a hero with a secret,” but even so, his portrayal is rather subtle and unassuming. Rather than fully embracing his heroic side, he seems to try to maintain a sense of normalcy, even when around those who worship him. He is not so much a warrior as he is a protector. The story can seem a little formulaic at times, but such is usually the case with romantic fiction (as least that is what I have found), but I like that the author added a sci-fi/fantasy twist to it.
