Sometimes baseball is just a metaphor for life, and sometimes it works the other way around. All Sarah Duke ever cared about was baseball, and she’s finally earned her shot as a full-time sports writer. She loves the work, she loves being one of the few women to ever gain access to a man’s world, but most of all, she loves the game. When Duke meets Molly Grettano and her two sons at the ballpark, she instantly connects with the young family, but Molly isn’t sure Duke’s ready for something more. Molly wants someone softer, more feminine, and more importantly, someone steady. She and her boys have been abandoned before, and she’s vowed to never to put them in that position again. If she were ever to trust anyone, it would have to be someone fully dedicated to her and her children. Duke has a lot of heart, but neither woman is sure there’s enough room left in it for anything other than baseball.

I’m a Brit, we have cricket, which is incomprehensible at the best of times. But I like sport and I can understand the passion Sarah Duke has for baseball, even I didn’t catch all the nuances. Because this is as much a love story about baseball as it is about the relationship between Duke and Molly. It’s also as much about the connection between Joe and Charlie and Duke, which for me was probably the best part of this book.I really enjoyed this one, Duke is a wonderful character. She’s passionate, friendly, upbeat and massively obsessed with her sport, but she has her own quiet wisdom and a hidden core of determination that’s driven her to succeed without any encouragement and a whole heap of discouragement. I love the way she spoke to Joe, how she encouraged him without ever patronizing him and how she saw herself in him. I love how she handled Charlie too, though Charlie is a force of nature and can only be handled if he permits. As for Molly, I’ll admit I didn’t like her as much as Duke. I admire her for the way she’s raised her children, but I have to admit I didn’t always like her. Not just because of her willful blindness towards Duke’s feelings simply because Duke doesn’t match up to a perfect picture in her head, but because she tries to change her. Yes, all right, there are moments where Duke edges the line and one moment where she jumps right over it, but usually because Molly pushes her there. Duke is who she is, she never pretends to be anything else, lies or makes false promises. Sure, there’s one time when she can’t keep her promises, but it’s not her fault. Yes, Molly has every right to expect more time and attention, but if so she shouldn’t have got involved with Duke when she knew how things were going to be.Thank goodness for Joe and Charlie! Joe is such a great kid, with his clear-headed notions and his pure trust in Duke. I loved that about him. As for Charlie, he’s so much fun, from the lion antics to the toll payment to the superman moment. His antics usually only take up a line or two, but I loved him every time he made himself known. I loved both of them, to be honest, and since they’re so great I could never dislike Molly entirely. In all this is a great story with some wonderful characters and romance that’s more realistic than an epic swept-off-the-feet feel. There’s a whole lot of baseball here too, but it all worked for me. I did feel the ending was a little abrupt, leaving too much of the future open and undecided, but it’s also possible I just wanted more Duke, Charlie and Joe. Sweet, sporting and fun with enough underlying emotion to tug on the heart strings. I really enjoyed it.(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

The lessons I learned about teamwork, discipline and a solid work ethic have stayed with me as an adult. The game of inches holds many life lessons. I enjoy watching major league ball games but am not an obsessed fan.Sarah Duke is a student of the game. She knows the sport as well or better than many of the players on the field. Her knowledge and dedication have landed Duke a dream job of sports writer for the St. Louis Cardinals.Molly Grettano is a single mom trying to cope with raising two young sons and working towards job security at her restaurant. She would love to meet someone to share her life with but her main focus is her children and their security.Duke's enthusiasm for the game is matched by her interest in Molly.Molly, however is looking for someone cultured and elegant to date. How these two manage to learn, grow and adapt makes for an interesting read. What made this book work so well for me was the realistic portrayal of someone trying to meet their own romantic needs while juggling a job, a home and a couple of kids. Some reviewers found Molly to be cold hearted in comparison to the always upbeat Duke. I thought Molly was a true representation of the challenges faced by a woman with responsibilities she cannot ignore. Her kids were a delight. Joe is the the baseball obsessed nine year old and young Charlie is a three year old with no off button. They added so much to the book and reinforced the point that dating Molly meant dating her whole family. Disappoint one, and all three are affected.Like baseball, there were lessons to be learned and growth needed for this couple to reach their HEA. In some romance novels the breakup necessary for that final makeup scene seems forced and contrived. In Heart of the Game the reasons for the breakup felt very real and honest.I would have liked an epilogue as the book felt unfinished with challenges still to be faced. While you don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this good romance, you may find yourself rolling your eyes once in a while at all the platitudes and life lessons Duke imparts on young Joe.4.5 starsARC received from publisher via NetGalley for review

Sarah Duke has been loving baseball her entire life so the point she became a full-time sportswriter and give up-to-date twitters during the ball games to her fans. Molly Grettano is a single mother of two boys and waitressing to make ends meet. They meet by accident when Duke (Sarah) sees Joe Grettano in the stands by himself doing pregame stats. She is intrigued because he is acting just like she did when she was his age. Joe and Duke get busted when they try to sneak into the underground tunnel to the pitcher's area to see warm up.Molly give Duke hell and promises to buy the third inning hot dogs. When Duke bring the dogs in the 3rd inning, Charlie the little son informs her he doesn't like hot dogs and won't eat it even though he's been ranting about it the entire time. The Grettano family and Duke meet up several times during the Cardinal's homestand season for hot dogs.Duke volunteers to babysit for the boys so Molly can go on a date. Duke was jealous, of course. Molly had a good time with Lauren and the story continues. But at what point in the game does the batter know it could be a home run or settle for a strike out?
