Review

"Preparing Students for Life Beyond College is a uniquely helpful, wise, and practical guide to engendering meaning-making on campuses. Containing a fine balance of explication of ideas, reflections from students, faculty, and staff, and pedagogical strategies, this book meets a need in higher education institutions that are too often adrift. The wisdom of this book can lift the sights of those who staff those institutions."

--Michael D. Waggoner, Professor of Higher Education, University of Northern Iowa and Editor, Religion & Education

"Nash and Jang integrate wise saws, broad-based scholarship and rich personal experiences to help us address the ‘meaning-making’ challenges facing ‘quarterlifers.’ Their practical suggestions will be useful to experienced teachers as well as to new professionals confronting these age old existential issues."

--Dr. Arthur W. Chickering, Pitkin Fellow, Goddard College

"With a passion for reminding the academy that the 'why?' precedes the 'what?', Nash and Jang have generously described their own classroom practice. Within this book you will discover a treasure trove of evocative, artful, tested questions that can be used across disciplines to re-claim the vital work of meaning-making throughout higher education."

--Sharon Daloz Parks, Author, Big Questions, Worthy Dreams

"Preparing Students for Life beyond College is a wonderful little book that offers a practical course for those who seek to support, or mentor, their students as they explore the questions that underlie their existence and attempt to create a life of meaning."

--Emma Farrell, Power and Education Journal

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring Vision for our Educational Future By Dr. Laurence Raw Robert J. Nash has been in the forefront for many years in offering alternative perspectives on pedagogy. His book on formulating scholarly personal narratives (2004) has proved highly influential for anyone interested in integrating the self with one's teaching and learning styles. In PREPARING STUDENTS FOR LIFE BEYOND COLLEGE, written in collaboration with Jennifer Jang, he offers a highly coherent pedagogical framework, based on their experiences of teaching a course based on meaning-making, where they invite learners to reflect on ontological questions such as ascertaining their place in the world.Superficially this course might seem unimportant, especially when compared with the "real business" of education. Yet it is to Nash and Jang's credit that they show how their ideas are integral to whole-person development, not only helping us to make sense of the unknown but also to ascertain what is important to ourselves. Through this type of course we can work out our inner values, which help us develop ethics; this can be achieved not only through discussion with fellow-learners and educators, but through mesearch; the ability to make sense of our lives through personal narratives. The authors argues convincingly for the importance of balance, of achieving mental andf physical equlibrium through reflection as well as discussion. Through such means we can work out what is important to our individual lives rather than just accepting what our peers might believe. The authors are very much concerned about the power of the inner voice. This is not just our "reason" - on the contrary, we might need to go beyond reason and listen to our hearts. This is something that is often repressed in most educational contexts; hence it is important to create a pedagogic space for reflection as well as discussion. The book offers a convincing definition of interdisciplinarity that transcends subject specificity. A truly interdisciplinary program of study is one that is multi-perspectival, enabling us to understand how the world is as well as giving us space and time for meaning-making. While we share common goals, we also have to formulate goals of our own; this coherence between individual and community values is often difficult to achieve. The authors argue for the importance of story-telling, of sharing our experiences and making sense of them through rigor and vigor. We should value others' ideas as well as our own; by such means we become more mindful as well as more solicitous about our fellow human beings.Often inspiring - perhaps more so because the authors always try to be descriptive rather than prescriptive, PREPARING STUDENTS FOR LIFE BEYOND COLLEGE should be essential reading for anyone interested in broadening educational futures.
