About the Author I love elementary teaching... and teachers! I have taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grades and subbed in rooms from kindergarten to 6th grade. I've also seen the administrative side during my time as an assistant school secretary. And the volunteer/mom/concerned parent angle? I've got that covered... my two boys are finishing up college, but I was there for them - in their classrooms - every step of the way. I hold a Masters in Elementary Education & Teacher Certification from Eastern Washington University and I have earned my National Board Certification. I have attended the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teaching Academy for Science and Math, been a national finalist at the Microsoft Innovative Education Forum and been awarded an Enhancing Education through Technology Grant. In addition to my teaching activities, my classroom teacher resources are based on my service as a district technology trainer and curriculum developer. I love all of my kids - special-education, talented and gifted, English language learners - every single one of them as individuals, no matter where they come from. Their success drives me, and inspires me to create teaching resources that are as effective as possible.

As a brand new teacher ( I just finished my student teaching), I learned a lot from this book. I wish I had read this book before my student teaching so that I could've done better and learned more from my student teaching. In this book, Betsy goes through from the very beginning of teaching. Some information you might have heard from your college. But it is always helpful to hear different perspectives. Then, she tells us about her teaching/organizing style. One of the reasons I like this book is that she clearly explains why her ideas and styles work well sharing her teaching philosophy. (This part I kind of missed from my mentor teacher)My favorite part was planning lessons. She actually guides you step by step providing lots of great tips that I never heard from my college or mentor teacher. This book is very easy to read and I really think new teachers like myself should read before starting new journeys. I also recommend to visit her bolg and youtube.

This is an excellent guide for new educators. I am starting my 17th year in the classroom and I would have loved having this resource when I first started teaching. Some of the information contained in this valuable book took me several years to learn on my own. I especially loved the explanation of the financial aspects that face schools and how to successful work within the district's guidelines. I also appreciate the honesty that was evident about real classroom experiences and that Betsy did not try to paint a picture perfect scenario. She told about the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to being an educator. I highly recommend this to all new instructors. As a future administrator, I plan to give this resource to my new teachers as a welcome gift. I give this book an A+ !!!!!

I just finished my 3rd year of teaching and wish this book would have been out while I was in college. The book is organized in a manner that allows any teacher to reflect on their goals for their first classroom or how they currently operate in their own classroom. I love that Betsy is a teacher who is giving ideas that help in a typically "difficult" demographic of students to work with. Definitely a must have for ANY teacher!
