0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 5 stories. Most of them are good. By Debbie's Digest I would skip story 1 or discuss the concerns I have with my student. The story, called “Whatchamacallit” which seems like a long word for 2nd graders to read, contains this undesirable phrase - “what the heck it really was.” It also contains a few words that I think will be difficult for 2nd graders to read and/or understand – whatchamacallit, trinket, gizmos, and contraption. I also do not like the appearance of a genie, the fact that the genie gives them a wish, one of the girls gets changed into a frog, and then... when they get another wish and the little girl says please and asks for her sister to be turned back the way she was, the genie says because she said please and is thinking of her sister and does not want something for herself, that she will live happily ever after. Really, just for saying please and for one time thinking of another. That is unrealistic. If you take the story as a fantasy story, maybe you could overlook the genie and the wishes, but I think this story teaches kids the wrong things about life, manners and the consequences of things.Story 2 is a good little story about the food pyramid.Story 3 is a cute story about a puppy and what a young boy names him.In story 4 we have a story about show and tell. The story has a good moral base and if you can ignore the talking toy, or tell kids it is a fantasy, not a true story, then the story is good.Story 5 is about baking a cake. It is boring and most of the story is the student reading the directions on the cake mix.So, I would have my student read story 2, 3, and maybe 4. I would bake a cake with my student and have them read the directions on our own cake mix and not read the book which is boring.
