By the middle of 1792, just a little more than three years after America's new government under the Constitution had been set in motion, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson - President George Washington's two most important cabinet secretaries and two of the most eminent men among the American founders - had become open and bitter political enemies. Their dispute was not personal but political in the highest sense. Each believed that the debate between them was over regime principles. Each believed that he was protecting the newly established republic, and that the other was laboring to destroy it. Carson Holloway's Hamilton versus Jefferson in the Washington Administration examines Hamilton and Jefferson's differences, seeking to explain why these great founders came to disagree so profoundly and vehemently about the political project to which both were committed and had dedicated so much thought and effort.

Review "Holloway pursues a straightforward ... yet original agenda: to review and compare the major state papers of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson written while they served, respectively, as Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of State in the Washington administration. He writes as an American Xenophon, patiently illustrating the ways of intelligent statesmanship through the work of two masters. One feels the pressure of every choice and the subtle interplay of principle and policy. A marvelous achievement." James Stoner, Louisiana State University"Everybody knows something about the conflicts between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson while they served together in the cabinet of President George Washington. But nobody has studied in such depth or probed their meaning so thoughtfully and thoroughly as Carson Holloway." Michael Zuckert, University of Notre Dame, Indiana"Carson Holloway's meticulous study of the debates between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson in the presidency of George Washington is distinguished by its thorough and fair-minded treatment of the nuances of [their] thought. Written with clarity and verve, it is a must-read for anyone interested in grappling with the profound differences of policy and principle dividing these founders and their legacy for contemporary political discourse." Darren Staloff, City College of New York

Knott Carson Holloway's remarkable work examines the great debates that occurred during George Washington's presidency between his two most brilliant cabinet officers. Hamilton's and Jefferson's arguments continue to influence the American political order, and thanks to Carson Holloway's work we are now better equipped to understand the principles and practices of these two statesmen. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Important note: the other "reviews" posted here as of this date are based on price, not on the content of the book. Do not be put off by these "reviews" -- this book is a must have for anyone interested in the American founding and in the current state of the American experiment.

By foundings scholar Although this book is somewhat pricey, I found it worth every penny, and think most readers will. This work is a tour de force of the most important political issues of the early American republic. I am familiar with literature about the Founders and, more than most other works in this genre, this book offers more depth about the specific political debates that divided two of the most important Founders. His engagement with the larger philosophical and political presuppositions that animate these debates is remarkable and clarifies the fundamental issues underlying the honest disagreements between Hamilton and Jefferson. The author writes in an even-handed (and elegant) manner which I often find lacking in such works. It will be interesting to see how this important book is received in political circles. So, I guess, yes it is somewhat expensive, but as I have found in books and so much of life, you get what you pay for.

By David Azerrad Holloway's book gives a blow by blow account of the political and constitutional arguments between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson when they both served in George Washington's cabinet. This story is fascinating in itself, and readers of this book will get a much deeper knowledge of it than is provided by most textbook accounts. In addition, however, Holloway shows how these debates are relevant to our politics today. We are still debating many of the questions that divided Hamilton and Jefferson: the scope of the government's powers, the role of the government in the economy, the principles that should guide our foreign policy. Serious students of American politics and American history will find in this book a very valuable resource.
