Review ''Mr. Sheckley - as might be expected of a writer who can wring praise from as diverse a group of peers as Kingsley Amis, Harlan Ellison, John le Carre, and J. G. Short But Sweet By Dave_42 "Untouched by Human Hands" is a collection of thirteen short fiction stories by Robert Sheckley, which was originally published in March of 1954. Sheckley has a way of looking at things from a different perspective which makes this collection unique. He also brings a good sense of humor to his writing, which makes this collection a quick and fun read. Robert Sheckley was first published in 1952, and this collection contains a lot of his earliest stories which were first published in 1952 and 1953.The first story is "The Monsters", a short story which was first published in the March 1953 edition of "Fantasy and Science Fiction" (F&SF). This story takes the alien viewpoint of humans landing on their planet. It touches on the societal and ethical assumptions which we make, and how aliens might do the same."Cost of Living" is a short story which was first published in F&SF in December of 1952. This story is a look at the future of our society, from the perspective of using debt to afford what we want. The story, if anything, is even more appropriate today."The Altar" is a short story which was first published in "Fantastic" in the July/August edition in 1953. It is a fantasy story, where Mr. Slater is a man who is bothered when he is unable to give directions to "The Altar of Baz-Matain", a place which Mr. Slater has never heard of in the town which he knows so well."Shape" is a novelette which was published under the name "Keep Your Shape" in the November 1953 edition of "Galaxy". It is an alien invasion story, where the aliens are shapeless beings who stick to the shape of their profession. They are attempting to take over Earth after several previous attempts have disappeared."The Impacted Man" is a short story published in "Astounding" in December of 1952. This story gives an alternate explanation for the creation of the Universe. Masrin is a man who gets impacted in a flaw left over from the creation."Untouched by Human Hands" is a short story first published as "One Man's Poison" in the December 1953 edition of "Galaxy". In this story, two men find themselves far from their base and running low on supplies which must have been mistakenly left behind. They find an alien planet with a storehouse, but is the alien food fit for them to eat, or is it poison, and what of the alien poison?"The King's Wishes" is a short story which was published in the July 1953 edition of F&SF. In this story a couple find that they are being robbed and set a trap for the robber. The problem is that it is no ordinary robber, but a kind of demon who finds it easier to steal from them, then to perform his magic."Warm" is a short story which was first published in "Galaxy" in June of 1953. In this story, a man (Anders) is lying on his bed contemplating his proposal to his girl friend and their future life, when he hears a cry for help, but he hears it with his mind and not his ears."The Demons" is short story "Fantasy" in March of 1953. In this story, he looks at the summoning of demons from the perspective of the one who is summoned. He also turns around the definition of demon."Specialist" is a short story which was first published in the May 1953 edition of "Galaxy". This story takes a different look at what our purpose is in life."Seventh Victim" is a short story which was published in the April 1953 edition of "Galaxy". This story was nominated in 2004 for the Retro Hugo for short stories published in 1953. In this story, man has eliminated war by allowing people to vent their violent tendencies by signing up to try to murder someone and then try to survive as a victim. It seems likely that this story served as inspiration for the game which is now fairly common on college campuses."Ritual" is a short story which was first published as "Strange Ritual" in "Climax" in 1953. This is another story written from the perspective of aliens being visited by humans. In this case Robert Sheckley comments on religious rituals."Beside Still Waters" is a short story which was first published in "Amazing" in the October/November 1953 edition. This is the story of a solitary prospector (Mark Rogers) and his robot who helps him survive on a planetoid (named "Martha" after `no girl he had ever known'). The style of this story is very different from the rest of the collection, and yet it is just as worthwhile to read.

I believe Sheckley was just 18 when he wrote these stories. It's his first published book and probably his best. If you enjoy the golden age of classical SF, buy this book and hold onto it.

Holmes I'm taken by Robert Sheckly's truly out of the box thinking, offbeat humor, and use of the genre to tell us about who we really are.I find too much of today's science fiction to be cluttered with sex and excessive violence, which gets in the way much the same as today's movies focus on CG rather than story and character development. We are told that we are products of our times. I think this means that a person from a given time period can't write quite like a person from another. The 1950's are a gold mine of great science fiction. Sheckly's work is a delightful and perfect example.
