Legend of the Walking Dead: Igbo Mythologies is a journey into the mysteries of life and death of the Igbos of Nigeria. The book draws readers into the Igbo people's ancient and traditional beliefs about life and death. There is a very thin line dividing the land of the living and the land of the dead, so thin that spirits from both lands coexist. Sometimes, during the story, it is difficult to differentiate between the living and the dead. Both have bodies; the living existing in their bodies, while the dead exist in (are using) borrowed bodies. Fifteen-year-old Osondu has disappeared. His mother goes searching for her son and faces the same fate. She too goes missing. The gods are ever present, in control, and minister to both the living and the dead. This is because the gods minister to the spirits, not the bodies that harbor them. To the gods, the spirits of both the living and the dead are ever alive. The world of the traditional Igbo society is a world in which the dead visit and interact easily with the living. It is also a world in which most of the time the living are at the mercy of the gods. Now retired, Joy Nwosu Lo-Bamijoko of Nigeria was a music teacher trained in Santa Cecilia, Rome. She obtained her Ph.D. in music education from the University of Michigan. She has written books, and published extensively in national and international scholarly journals, magazines, and newspapers. When his mother goes to look for him, she too disappears. As the story unfolds, we are drawn into the rich myth of the Igbo, and how they see life, death, and life after death. This is a book that makes you ponder the uncertainties of life. Many Igbo myths and legends are woven into one cohesive tale, with rich imagery and an obvious love for the culture. The characters could have been developed more fully, and as they are I struggled to identify with them. The pacing is slow and steady, but then this isn't the kind of book you would pick up if you were after a lot of action. If you enjoy myths and legends, and stories of Africa, you are likely to enjoy this book.

The stories I read took me on an adventure through some of the many folk tales of the Igbo culture. As I continued to read on, I was drawn deeper into the tales and found myself watching them manifest right in front of me. This book makes you ponder on the many uncertainties of life in a very comforting way and leaves you ready to seek out more tales to ponder on (hopefully in another book)! Do not pick this book up if you only have a few seconds to browse, because once you pick it up, I guarantee you will not put it down!

By Jan Hawke This is a high 4 star assessment from me, so lets cut to the chase on why this amazing and refreshingly original book didn't quite get to 5 stars for me.The sense of oral traditions are woven into this exploration of life beyond death from the viewpoint of an Igbo mother and son, so there's a distinctive and wholly authentic African rhythm all the way. However, for a written story (as opposed to a sung, or chanted story) there are too many reiterations, or paraphrasing threaded through, that at times did detract from the story flow for me.So, this is stylistic call on my part that caused the blip on an otherwise enthralling and unique insight into an edgy and evocative mythology, that blends the familiar christian and syncretic beliefs of Ms. Lo-Bamijoko's native Nigeria, and delivers something truly special to the often hackneyed and derivative world of paranormal fantasy. It's a wonderful book and I heartily recommend it, blips and all.
