Nobelle is desperate to avoid the hangman's noose, and as last ditch efforts go her life could be worse than rescuing a bratty princess. She’s over twenty now and it still hasn’t happened, so her parents arrange a marriage for her with a neighbouring king. But Danna wants her true love match, and what could guarantee true love more than a curse and being locked in a tower? Unfortunately, her rescuer is in no way a noble knight, and the fact the curse isn’t broken means the woman isn’t her true love, either.I found Danna to be a bit vapid at first, especially compared to Nobelle, which I am sure is the impression you are supposed to get. I sympathised with Nobelle right from the start, even before the two met. “Nobility” is worth sticking with, however, as you learn about Danna with Nobelle. And I really like the way Ms Bain-Vrba changed the True Love storyline but still kept the heart of it.I have read some of Ms Bain-Vrba’s other works and find that they tend to have more of a dark overshadowing than many other fantasy stories and I do need to be in the mood for them. Of those stories I have read by Ms Bain-Vrba, although I liked “Words of Divinity” more, “Nobility” is definitely not the one I liked least. However, “Nobility” does end on a Happily-For-Now note (sliding into a HEA) as they do work out things between them but there is an overshadowing of certain problems to come. I’m not sure if this is because Ms Bain-Vrba intends a sequel or whether this is just a reflection of the real world where a relationship is always in flux, but it’s more like a meet-cute than the whole story. Either way, this was a lovely way to take a short break.

It included snappy comebacks and a few retorts that made me giggle. Ms. Bain-Vrba definitely showed off her playful sense of humor in this tale. What I enjoyed about this the most was how the author used the comical dialogue to reveal her characters’ personalities. Nobelle and Danna both had incredibly unique voices. It only took me a short amount of time to immediately know who was speaking simply by how they strung words together. There were a few issues with the conflict in this story. While I liked the fact that the characters had to overcome so many obstacles during their adventures, I would have preferred to see them spend more time struggling to find solutions to their problems. Allowing them to figure out those solutions so quickly dampened the tension that should have been rising as the plot moved toward its exciting conclusion.Danna and Nobelle’s chemistry didn’t show up right away, but seeing it develop was well worth the wait. At first glance they appeared to have completely opposite personalities and interests. What I found compelling about their growing attraction, though, was just how much they had in common once I pushed past my first impressions of them. They appeared to be a good match for each other which made rooting for them to get together even more rewarding than it might have been otherwise.Nobility is something I’d recommend to fans of the romance and fantasy genres alike.originally posted at long and short reviews

Nobelle is a far from perfect heroine but she’s clever and determined to survive. I liked her. Danna is a bit more expected – pretty princess who is tired of having everything, didn’t want to marry the nasty prince. I loved the descriptions of her life in the tower and the cute swipes at Tangled (the painting as seen through Nobelle’s eyes made me laugh), and especially loved how Nobelle gets into the tower.True, it’s kind of silly in places and Danna’s hissy-fit about people always wanting things from her (why else would anyone be rescuing her? How can they fall in love with her for herself when they’ve never met her?) is annoyingly naive, and perhaps the villain was a bit too cliché for me, but overall it’s sweet and has a lovely message about how true love really happens.A lovely addition to the Damsels in Distress collection, especially if you don’t mind tweaking the whiskers of all those fairytale clichés.(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
