This Book is a Little Gem By Jim Gottstein I am an acquaintance of Jack Carney, the author, and when he sent me a link to the book, I thought I would take a look at it. I frankly wasn't expecting that much, but then when I got into it I thought "holy s***," this is really good. I don't usually read books very fast, but this one, I couldn't put down. It reminds me of A People's History of the United States in presenting the non-official, more accurate portrayal of United States history and policy. If you don't know how falsely United States history and actions have been portrayed, Nation of Killers is a must read. If you are familiar with this history, I think you will still enjoy it. This book is a little gem.

Keen observation of conflicting forces in America today By Gerry Jack Carney has assembled a fine group of essays into a book entitled Nation of Killers. From the perspective of an experienced social worker who has served his time in the trenches, it incisively displays the quagmire in which America finds itself in the beginning of the 21st Century, especially with regard to it's fascination with killing as both entertainment and (short-term) problem solving. The first part of the book considers what has happened to the “American Dream,” now fading out of reach for the majority of the population. The struggle for inclusiveness and expansion of opportunities has been resisted by forces that see such change as a threat to their power and status. If you can't get away with slavery, try economic bondage; if that doesn't work, try killing and justify it by calling it Manifest Destiny. Carney delves into the legacy of slavery and the notion of White Supremacy, with its lynching, court-ordered executions and institutional commitments, the weight of which all fell disproportionately on minority groups including Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos and the cognitively and emotionally challenged.The second part of the book is composed of six essays dealing with the usurpation of the Constitution by corporate and special interest groups with lots of money available to be used for resisting change, discrediting protesters and crippling their ability to organize. Anyone who has seen the movie, The Big Short, will appreciate Carney's descriptions of the shenanigans of the “one-percenters” at the expense of the greater good of the nation and the struggles for unions to survive after Regan's declaration of war decimated their ranks. And then there is “mental health,” that which people who act peculiarly or different from the norm appear to lack. Of course “mental illness” is a fiction since sufferers, for the most part, do not have any discernible “disease,” and if they do, it is then no longer considered a mental illness. While psychiatrists concoct categories they call “diagnoses,” the results have neither reliability nor validity, but their Big Pharma friends will still provide a drug for each of these ever-expanding hypothetical entities, buying bogus research to support their claims to a blind and compromised FDA. The huge industry that has been constructed and foisted on the public by these erroneous ideas, bank-rolled largely by public funds, has not resulted in improved behavior or circumstances for their clients. Carney provides an engaging account from the front lines of the dismal state of the mental health industry.Finally, Carney has some suggestions for what is needed to preserve our liberties and fight the forces that would doom our democracy. Mostly, these have to do with organizing communities and teaching them effective means to fight for their rights and resist the encroachment of unfettered capitalists and overly bureaucratized governments. Overall, a good read indeed.
